“Unless This Guy’s Made A 180-Degree Change …”

July 24th, 2013

Greg Schiano says new Bucs offensive lineman Gabe Carimi, a former Bears first-round pick, looks in great physical condition.

The Bears considered Gabe Carimi a bust with physical and off-field issues.

Greg Schiano isn’t buying it — because of what he’s seen from Carimi, and because of what Bucs offensive line coach Bob Bostad told him. Schiano explained to Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620 that Bostad simply didn’t believe Carimi was not a Buccaneer Man.

“But when you talk to Bob, and you get the insight of ‘Hey, unless this guy’s made a 180-degree change in the person that he is, which he hasn’t, this is one of us,’” Schiano said. “That’s why it’s exciting for us. Because physically he looks great. He had the knee [injury], but he’s doing really well now. So we’re excited and, you know, you give up a sixth-round pick, that’s not much of a risk.”

Joe’s most excited by Schiano’s claim of Carimi looking great “physically. If this, Carimi’s third year, is his time to shine at right tackle, then the Bucs, if healthy, should have the best offensive line in football.

If this guy excels during preseason I can smell the end of Donald Penn’s time in Tampa Bay! If Dotson improves more there’s always the possibility that he plays preseason as the left tackle!

    speaking of the o line..

nice penn workout video right here.

This guy prefers guard, this was supposedly part of the problem in Chicago. Spell Davin.

  4. Sneedy16 Says:

If he pass the 16×110 he should be good. I would prefer him replacing Davin Joseph since he is always injured and his contract is high. Donald Penn is very reliable and looks like he is in great shape.

  5. Sneedy16 Says:

    @Robert

He looks like he is in great shape.

  6. Biff Barker Says:

My mistake! Check the above post, it’s the other way around. He graded out awful at tackle and the Bears wanted to move him inside. Maybe it is Penn or Dotson after all.
No worries, we got Bostad…the man to sort this out.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Saw a report somewhere that Nicks is wearing a big bandage on his toe…..that doesn’t sound good at this stage.
We need all the depth we can get on the O-line.
I presume that Bostad & Schiano know a ‘Buccaneer Man” when they see one….after all, they defined the term.

  8. Tim Says:

    @ Sammy

Not going to happen, he will push Dotson at right tackle and provide depth across the interior line. Dotson is still learning to play RT, I would expect Dotson to stay their. LTs are a different breed, than most O linemen.

    @ Biff

DJ isn’t going anywhere. Dominick and Schiano are big on having a strong interior line. Joseph and Nicks are both pro bowlers.

  9. Macabee Says:

I believe in Bostad! Bostad coached up Carimi to win the Outland Trophy awarded to the best interior offensive lineman in college in 2010. Like Schiano, I don’t believe that was a fluke!

  10. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Whoever the starters end up being on the offensive line will certainly be backed up by very good depth. After last year, our back ups gained a lot of valuable experience. I’ feel completely comfortable about that position and even more so now with the addition of Carimi, whether he starts or not.

  11. Biff Barker Says:

    Sneedy,
Hope it’s cloudy in Tampa today for the 16 x death test.
As said in my earlier post, I thought it was Joseph too. Penn is more valuable than Joseph IMO.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

I see one dumb Bucs fan.

  13. Biff Barker Says:

    Tim,
I know they like Joseph, Nicks too. It’s economics that’s all.
    Macabee,
Didn’t realize Outland was for the interior and includes defense as well. Suh is a former winner too.

  14. Macabee Says:

    Biff,

Doug Martin running behind the “Best O Line in Football”

Sounds good to me, assuming nicks and Joseph recover from injury, and Dotson either beats out Carimi or becomes quality depth behind a rejuvenated Carimi.

Heard Nicks’ toe is still in bandages, but he’s been clear to practice. Interesting to say the least, slightly concerning.

  16. Macabee Says:

    Biff,

I see what you were getting at. In my original post I said Offensive lineman. Just an oversight on my part. The Outland goes to the best interior lineman period. Sorry for the confusion!

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Walter

I noticed that report on Nick’s toe also….Hopefully the bandages are merely there for protective purposes.

  18. Biff Barker Says:

    Macabee,
You can’t confuse someone who didn’t know. Always thought Outland was for best O Lineman.
    No harm.
This Nicks comment is really disturbing. Schiano mentioned on 620 yesterday that his injury was more severe than most thought. Nothing was said about him not being ready for the season. Any chance he was just taped up?

  19. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Joe….Top priorty….what’s up with Nicks?

  20. robert Says:

how the hell does a toe take a year to heal. chop it off!

  21. Couch Fan Says:

    @ Robert

Your talking about a toe of a 340+ lbs. man. Unless he has stayed in bed the entire off season, the toe is gonna be sore for a while I would imagine.

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Walk it off like the rest of us… ;)

  23. Buc Fan #238 Says:

“…the Bucs should have the best offensive line in” in Madden ’14.

    Fixed it for ya.

Actually, I think I will get Madden this year since they have such a promising team.
