McCoy Setting Pace In The Weight Room

July 18th, 2013

Bucs rookie nose tackle Akeem Spence, a projected starter by the New Schiano Order, entered the NFL as a workout warrior and a former champion competitive weightlifter. Spence is a chiseled 300-pounder, almost like a 6-1 lineman version of Doug Martin, so it’s safe to say Spence loves the gym.

So it was notable that Spence said today that he’s crafting his weight room work ethic by emulating Gerald McCoy.

“We can’t slack. I like to think of it like college. We pad-clean, we lift, we come out here and we run; we get it. You know what I’m saying. And I see Gerald [McCoy] in there working on off days and I say, ‘Hey, I gotta do what he do.’” Spence said. “You know what I’m saying. I wanna be where he at. So I’m trying to stay up.”

Doing a little more digging today, Joe learned that McCoy has, in fact, taken his body to new heights and is blowing the minds of Bucs officials with his intensity and drive following his Pro Bowl appearance.

As Bryan Cox explained this spring, McCoy may be a Pro Bowl player, but his task is much greater. He’s got to “bring some guys with him.”

    Clayborn Spence McCoy Bowers

  2. Tampamac Says:

Definitely anxious to see those two together in the trenches along with a healthy(fingers crossed) Clayborn and Bowers.. Only 7 days till camp kicks off.. It’s almost here fellas!

  3. Walter Says:

Apparently NFL Network didn’t hear Schiano correctly, cuz they just said that the QB position is an open competition between Glennon and Freeman. How many times does Schiano have to say that Freeman is the starter??

  4. Raphael Says:

Lol @ nfl network ….anything to stir controversy no matter how dumb..

    MCcoy >>> Suh

  5. Biff Barker Says:

Nice story if these guys were competing in Olympic weightlifting.
Hope they have some stamina for the field.
Schiano burnt this team out a little early last year IMO with all the conditioning. It’s a long season in the NFL.
That said, nice that GMC is setting the example.

I dont think Spence is a shoo-in to be the starting NT. at first it may be Gibson or Derek Landri starting, but eventually Im sure he’ll work his way into the starting lineup.

  7. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Joe

do you know if Spence has been working with the first team?

  8. Buc'n Junkie Says:

Rotoworld said Schiano has Gibson as #1

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Assuming (and hoping) McCoy stays healthy, he is going to set the league on fire this year. We have only seen a glimpse of how good he can be.

Strong minds build stronger bodies. This team has an edge to them that they lacked when Rah was here. This is a team with confidence that will bust you in the mouth. I don’t think they fear anyone and Schiano has instilled a high level of confidence in them and their abilities. He has brought in Vets with attitude and swagger as well.

It goes back to that last play against the Giants on the kneel down. He knew it was going to ruffle feathers but he did it anyway. When you fear nothing, you can move mountains. I see this in Schiano but he is quiet, reserved and not arrogant in the least. We’ll do our talking on the field. This team is going to be good. I can feel it.

I think I’m going to go ahead and buy my 2014′ tickets to lock in my price. When the Bucs go 12-4, win the division and steam through the playoffs, tickets will be hot next year.

Maybe it’s me but I think Rick Scott is losing his hair.

  11. Macabee Says:

I read in a couple of articles that McCoy had lost 20lbs. His published weight at Buccaneers.com is 300lbs. Is he planning to play at 280lbs and is it Ok with Schiano?

Perhaps Joe can find out next week when the vets report. I’d like to know if this is a team goal or if his new bride is insisting on the makeover – more meat less potatoes!

  12. below me Says:

    Word.

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Macabee

since McCoy and the rest of the bucs cant even sneeze without Schiano’s approval Im sure he gave McCoy the OK to play at that weight. it might even be a team goal like you eluded to. it seems a bit undersized to me but Schiano knows best.

  14. Orlandobucfan Says:

    @andrew
I’m not sure that comment of schiano knows best was ever said three years ago as Raheem knows best, big difference between the two and I love it.

  15. Jbskiff Says:

@ Biff or is it Barf? The reason I don’t know is your posting above. It leads me to believe you don’t know anything about athletics. Maybe you just read to many rants by Maguel about the dreaded 16x 110 yard sprints. What he and others fell to realize is that’s only a mile and they were only required to do it one time if they came into camp in shape. Lazy Ass party boys need not apply! Sorry but you are flat wrong. Most people in and out of sport business agree (Raphael excluded) that it was Freeman’s eradic play that doomed our chances of the playoffs last year. That’s why Freeman is in a do or die year (figurative speaking).

  16. Buc1987 Says:

    I see dumb people.

  17. Raphael Says:

@ jbskiff Lol what was our pass defense ranking last year ?

  18. Amar Says:

Took the words right out my mouth, great posts BigMacAttack and Jbskiff. Keep bringin’ that shii!

  19. scubog Says:

Walter: That’s because many of these media types aren’t paying attention and just echo what they heard from another ill-advised source. Hmmmm, some posters too. An article about GMC still begets a Freeman bash.

  20. Bob Says:

Perhaps Spence should not speak since he talks like a uneducated thug, take a english class dawg lol
