Stevens Means Means Linebacker Depth

April 27th, 2013

SThe Bucs, with their fifth round pick, have selected an outside linebacker from the football factory of the University of Buffalo, Steven Means.

Means is certainly camp meat and may mean linebacker depth, which Joe knows Bucs coach Greg Schiano wanted to add.

Means does have some speed, running a 4.6 40-yard dash. He was a defensive en,d but his size and speed better translate as an outside linebacker in the NFL. One breakdown of Means suggests he’s a special teams guy.

Means is third in Buffalo history in sacks.

    hmm sounds like he could be an interesting option to compete for Q.Black’s old spot…

    is he from buffalo or uconn?

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Joe’s right, he won’t play DE for the Bucs. He’ll play OLB with the added ability to rush the passer when called on. His pass rush skills are superior to Dekoda Watson or Quincy Black so that’s a bonus. Plus he’s really fast. The late rounds are perfect for drafting great athletes with high upside, so this guy fits the bill. Maybe he makes the team, maybe he doesn’t.

    I believe this guy would have been available Monday morning.

  7. Sneedy16 Says:

    This guy is really good at shedding blocks. SAM LB maybe? He looks good at blitzes with multiple pass rush moves even though it wasn’t top talent.

  8. Sneedy16 Says:

    @1976Buc

    Just because he might not have been draft means that they would have had a chance of signing him. He most likely would of stayed closer to home.

  9. lurker Says:

    @1976buc

    maybe so, but the bucs have shown/stated that they will draft a player instead of risking signing as ufa if they are far from home. and he is from buffalo, ny.

    What are we doing? Not feeling good.

  11. Tim Says:

    This draft has been a disappointment after the Banks pick in the second round. None of these guys will make a difference and be on the team 3 years from now. This will be remembered as a draft of Revis and Banks. Everybody else is second string at best.

  12. Sneedy16 Says:

    Internet GM’s are funny.

  13. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    Has Brandon Jenkins 6’2″ 251 Florida St. been drafted??

  14. Buqsfan Says:

    At 6-4 and a burger away from 260, he’s too big to be a LBer in our 4-3 defense. I think his upside is better than Gholston. I actually seen him throwing Olinemen around. You don’t see him getting thrown around by Olinemen.

  15. Curmudgeon Says:

    @Tim-
    I’m sure you’ve put in all the research necessary to make these judgements… maybe you should send your resume over to OBP.

  16. Erick Says:

    I don’t understand all the hate on this draft. Just because you people haven’t heard of these players doesn’t mean that they will all be busts. I guess you guys are the same people who go to Kiper and Mcshay for draft analysis.

  17. MOBucs Says:

    I agree Sneedy! Really hilarious reading these posts. Expertise on display. LOL!

  18. lakeland fan Says:

    Can we please get a return man.

  19. Daffy Buc Says:

    With the drafting of Gholston and Means means that the Bucs are trying to have much better pass rush this year. When Bowers and Clayborn come out, Gholston and Means will get their chance to bring heat. Means is as cut as Simeon Rice. Could be a hidden gem discovery from Eric Stokes. Backups are now much faster than what we had last year.

  20. Sneedy16 Says:

    @Buqsfan

    He is athletic. The SAM really is more of a run supporter so he has the size, speed, and athletic ability to do so.

  21. Buqsfan Says:

    @Erick, I’m with you on this. I do not pay any attention to Kiper every since I heard he gets kick back from agents to push prospects.

  22. Sneedy16 Says:

    @Daffy Buc

    Plus Gholston and move in and spell Mccoy like Bennett used to do.

  23. Buqsfan Says:

    @Sneedy, I see speed rush DE in Means. I was hoping that we can get OLB Keith Pough at sam.

  24. Bird Says:

    Hey . Schiano is runnin the pick show and he is doing a horrible job. Remember chucky s picks. Their next pick will be from the WNBA. Coach, u coach and let Dominik do his job.

  25. Bucfan Says:

    I’m bird, schiano was heavily in the mix of choosing Barron Martin and David. Schiano knows what he’s doing. Sit back and enjoy te couch.

  26. Sneedy16 Says:

    I forgot Keith Pough was still available.

  27. Jacko101 Says:

    All this pre judging is funny to me, it’s not as exciting as last years however I think we filled gaps. I think Our first 4th rounder will fit perfect.

    Highlight reel:

    He has a knack for shedding blocks quickly and violently and getting into the backfield. Also has fantastic pursuit skills and play recognition.

  29. Brandon Says:

    Had Means at the bottom of my available DE list.

    I can’t see him being an OLB for us. Until Dominik or Schiano say otherwise, he’s a DE for the most part.

  30. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    @Bucfan

    schiano was heavily in the mix of choosing Barron Martin and David.

    NO he was not. He said so himself! How could a rookie coach, back in the NFL after more than a decade away, come in and be “heavily in the mix of choosing Barron Martin and David.” only weeks after he was hired? It makes absolutely NO SENSE.

    Im sorry but that is just wrong.
