Report: Butch Davis Passes On FIU

December 7th, 2012

The college football world was abuzz earlier this week with a Sports Illustrated report of Buccaneers covert defensive strategist/operative Butch Davis being a hot candidate for the vacant head coaching job at Florida International University.

Well, that chatter is dead. Per the Miami Herald, Davis is not interested.

It’ll be interesting to see if Davis’ big name is linked to other college openings. As Joe’s written before, Monte Kiffin is eagerly seeking a return to the NFL, and the Bucs could look to him if they sought another defensive advisor to replace Davis. Kiffin has Greg Schiano’s love and could actually work with Buccaneers hands-on, unlike Davis.

Well let’s hear it. Davis is going to USF. You know that will come from somewhere next.

Wouldn’t Davis be able to work with the team “hands on” next year?

Keyword ( IF ) Butch were to get the USF HC job, it could provide for an interesting pipeline. My thinking is that he could recruit the best local talent. teach and coach them up to be NFL ready. Then our Bucs could either draft or have an inside track, and extensive knowledge on undrafted picks. also might be quite attractive thought for some young men to play their entire career in front of family/friends.

Not sure about Kiffin. He may be spent, but who knows?

  5. SeanyMac in SC Says:

Can some one tell me just what exactly Butch Davis is doing for the team? Every interview I have read and heard about this topic and you get a very unclear answer about his role. Some kind of an adviser I guess to help the NSO get things started as a HC I guess. Would it really effect the team if he left? Just asking the question, not trying to start any fights here.

  6. Pete Dutcher Says:

I believe he is also helping in playbook development. I may be wrong though.
