Dominik-Schiano Poring Over Personnel

August 27th, 2012

Joe knows many Bucs fans assume that Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik is nothing more than a figurehead under the New Schiano Order.

Hell, Stephen Holder of the Tampa Bay Times advised readers that Schiano is more powerful than Tom Coughlin, Mike McCarthy and Norv Turner.

Dominik, however, painted a different picture Friday, and surely a more accurate one during an interview with Gene Deckerhoff on the Buccaneers Radio Network.

Deckerhoff asked Dominik about crafting the roster with Greg Schiano.

“We have sat down almost every day for multiple hours,” Dominik said. “We meet everyday on it, Gene.”

Joe realizes cynical Bucs fans likely believe Dominik is only running the overhead projector and managing the established room temperature in these meetings, but Joe’s quite confident Dominik retains significant power and influence, if not a tiebreaking say.

Dominik went on to tell Deckerhoff how prepared the Bucs are for the waiver wire and “that second draft,” when roughly 1,500 players are cut around the league this week.

  1. Brad Says:

Dominik better stop meeting and start acting. Moves need to be made today to improve both our lines.

  2. JSmalls Says:

Schiano left his cushy job to enter the dangerous waters of the NFL only to let Dominick have the final say. That’s as close to unbelievable as anything I’ve ever heard. Dominick most likely compiles info of the types of players Butch and Schiano want and manage the scouts and personel collecting said info. That sounds much more believable.

  3. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Joe you are out of your friggin mind.

Sure, the Glazers bring in a high-priced Head Coach to turn the team around but leave personnel veto power in the hands of the horrible, 17-31, no experience GM.

That makes a lot of sense.

Schiano, or anyone other respected coach, would never have taken this job if they were going to be limited to DomDom’s players – that would be career suicide. Ask RahRah Morris? How did that PIVOTAL 2010 draft do for him?

  4. MTM Says:

Rock star: Please no more rehabilitation projects!!

  5. TheRealVince Says:

Wonder if there is any scuttlebutt about what serviceable OG’s may be on the chopping block with other teams.

  6. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    @Brad,

How in the hell are moves going to be made today? Any significant moves will be made AFTER the rosters are cut down to 53 across the league, not before. Unless you believe there’s a starting caliber guard just sitting on the couch somewhere (hint: there isn’t).

  7. Orlandobucfan Says:

I agree I don’t see schiano leaving rutgers a job where he is pretty much guaranteed to retire from if he wanted, to come to the bucs without significant power to at least control who is on his team so his fate isn’t left for Dominick to dictate with his less than seller track record. I don’t think this draft was just a coincidence how good we did and the only thing different is the HC. New Schiano Order doesn’t just applying to keeping the players in line.

  8. Vic Says:

And where did Joe write that Schiano didn’t have significant power? You guys are so psycho.

  9. Kennedy Says:

News flash Thomas 2.2. Schiano is not a high-priced head coach. These are the same Glazers who gave Gruden a huge contract when he didn’t have full personnel control and then fired Gruden with $15 million+ left on his deal. They don’t care what the coach earns. And I’ll bet you anything Schiano was more than happy to sign on the dotted line for his first head coaching gig. The guy was hardly a collegiate icon.

  10. JSmalls Says:

    @vic,

‘Joe’s quite confident Dominik retains significant power and influence, if not a tiebreaking say.’

  11. Buc N' A Says:

Preach on Vic! Took the words right out of my mouth. Funny how one person’s conjecture suddenly becomes fact, but another person’s conjecture is not. Point is – no one knows. So when you are merely pontificating, please try to keep some perspective. You may “think” you know the answer and can provide some flimsy unsubstantiated “facts” but it’s all just conjecture. I think there is no way a college coach from a small University gets more power than Tom Coughlin. Two super bowls vs what exactly? A positive win percentage? I love me some Schiano, but you need to prove your worth in the NFL before someone gives you unlimited power. Schiano is in his infancy as a coach. Maybe one day he gets that power, but I don’t think he has it yet. Either way – GO BUCS! D*mn that defense was looking good Friday night.

  12. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Unless your name is Glazer, Schiano or Dominik you don’t have a clue as to how much power each guy has in the organization. Passing off speculation as fact is an idiot’s game.

  13. Vic Says:

@Jsmalls – You might want to re-read what I asked actually asked. SMH

  14. Brad Says:

@flBOY… Because most teams have the decency to cut the better players early so they have a chance to catch on somewhere else. Plus if Dominik is monitoring as close as indicated he knows who’s going to be released and could make a trade if need be for a low round draft choice. FlBOY…do you know anything about football. You sound like the idiot.,

  15. robert Says:

domenic is good on the waiver wire. 2nd round, not so much…

  16. Adam Says:

I heard Dominik found a top of the line projector for their meetings; however, the projector had a bad bulb and only seemed to provide adequate picture for about 25% of the season… and even then it wasn’t as good as other projectors.

  17. the_buc_realist Says:

from my sources, The Rock Star is bearly in charge of hitting the print button when it comes to contracts.

The Rock Star even said this past offseason that he has given up some responsibility to the new coach.

To think that a coach that want control over pasta and exact temperature As quoted by Joe many times, would just let the rock star keep bringing in scrubs does not make sense.

  18. Buxter Says:

For what it’s worth, our draft this year seems to be more solid than normal. i.e. we brought in NFL ready players and did’nt reach.

Dom has better people around him than years past. I truly think Hickey had far less input with the arrival of Davis and Schiano.

What Dom has done a good job with is scouring the waiver wire. Blount, Bennett, Underwood and even Penn were all cut loose.

Might as well state the obvious, we badly need a OG and a DT and maybe a TE.

  19. admin Says:

    Joe here,

Fellas, Joe never discounted Schiano’s power in this post, only the perception of it. Joe is quite confident that Schiano and Dominik are a team when it comes to personnel. Who has final say? Well, Joe can’t pretend to know that like others do.

  20. Bobby Says:

@Brad…actually the better players get cut on the second round of cuts not the first. It only makes sense that you would hold on to your best players until last because you’re trying to put together the best 53 man roster.

  21. Thomas 2.2 Says:

I thought Stephen Holder reported that DomDom’s role was changed from “decision maker” with RahRah to an “executor” of Schiano’s decisions now.

Also, Schiano constantly speaks of seeking players that “fit” his program.Would anyone allow someone else to provide you with the talent to fit your system – after working together such a short time – never.

Do any of you guys really believe that DomDom just figured it out a few months ago after being an abject disaster since 09?

    Come on man.

  22. Miguel Grande Says:

Jeff Faine is still sitting on the couch and he wouldn’t cost even a 7th round pick.

He just might sign a 1 year contract for the minimum.

  23. Thomas 2.2 Says:

    Bobby- not true at all.

It is a nfl custom to cut respected early not later to give them more time to catch on with another team.

  24. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Nice idea Miguel.Faine might be solution bc you could slide Zuttah over.

  25. FLBoyInDallas Says:

If Brad and 2.2 are correct then we’d be seeing all sorts of starting caliber guys released today. Hasn’t happened. Nothing but a bunch of no-namers and camp bodies. Deadline is this afternoon and most teams have made cuts.

Anyone who’s been following football with their eyes open knows that the most valuable cuts happen with the rosters are trimmed to fifty-three. Simple as that. Just go back and look at player releases in years past and you’ll see. Everyone knows this…or at least I thought they did. Guess I was wrong.

  26. Oahubuc Says:

“Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain.” _Butch Davis

  27. mcbuc Says:

Oaho…I dopubt that, Butch was not that good with personel in the past. It is a Dom Shiano duo, just like both men say.

  28. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Flboy: nobody said anything about starting caliber guys.

If you have a vet who put in good years and it doesn’t look good for him – many times the team will sit him down tell him that the odds are against him and release him early.

This allows him to get in camp before 53s are set which is better than later.

  29. teacherman777 Says:

I was thinking the same thing about Faine.

He is still a fighter. He does his best every play.

    Class act man.

  30. Bobby Says:

    “Bobby- not true at all.

It is a nfl custom to cut respected early not later to give them more time to catch on with another team.”

    Really Thomas?? In what universe??

  31. Tbuc Says:

Hopefully Dominik is better at waiver wire pickups than he is at drafting.

  32. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    @2.2

If we’re not talking about starting caliber players then what’s all the fuss? We need a starting RG or C (depending on where Zuttah ends up). Just compare the list of cuts from today with the list that comes out when the drop down to 53 and you’ll see the difference in quality. That’s when the real action will take place. Not today.

  33. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Teams will hold onto the guys they think have trade value until the very last minute when the list of 53 is due. Those are the guys Dominik and Schiano are licking their chops over.

  34. BucFan20 Says:

You can see Mister know it all 2.2 is making as much at One Buc Place for his knowledge as he is here. ZERO. That’s why Dom is the GM and he is not. He even thinks he knows everything that goes on inside the Palace.

Let’s see it’s been LGB today. Now Dom. About time for a GMC story for him. Better yet. He knows everything. Thomass, Show us the cut down list?

  35. BucFan20 Says:

If this draft turns out to be the best, you can bet some people will give Dom the credit. But we know who will not. If it turns out bad. The people will come out of the woodwork and give him and him alone all the credit!!

  36. Fritz50 Says:

“I thought Stephen Holder reported that DomDom’s role was changed from “decision maker” with RahRah to an “executor” of Schiano’s decisions now.”

You THOUGHT ? And Stephen Holder ? This is the source of your certainties ? You actually think he knows more about what goes on in 1Buc Place than anyone else? As paranoid as Coach is about keeping things in-house, you actually think he’d talk to Holder ? Pathetic

  37. Joe Says:

    teacherman777:

Joe would be shocked — SHOCKED! — if the Bucs bring back Jeff Faine (who, btw, hasn’t been signed by anyone since the Bucs cut him, which speaks volumes).

The Bucs would move Ted Larsen to center and move Zuttah to right guard before they would sign Faine.

  38. Fritz50 Says:

Truth is, I don’t give a rat’s fart in a hurricane ( note the contemporary news reference ) who has the most power, if it brings us a better &, hopefully, winning team, that’s all that counts with me. Seems to, at least , be moving in that direction, & what more can we ask for?

  39. bucfanlostiniowa Says:

Didn’t Faine call the defense for Freeman in 2010, the only year Freeman was worth a crap?

No. Freeman took it over later in that season. –Joe

  40. StopOrMyMommaWillShoot Says:

I’m as big a Freeman fan as anybody, but I’m certain that if he struggles again this season with forcing passes, misreading defenses, throwing INT’s and locking onto one side of the field pre-snap, we will officially be looking at a QB Draft Watch in the final games of the season. Hate to say it, but mark it down. Schiano doesn’t play around and nobody is guaranteed a spot going into 2013.

    “from my sources …………….”

    ————-

Okay, is this a joke? Your sources? My sources say that your sources don’t know sh!t. This is becoming quite comical.

  42. jarrett Says:

@hawaiian I love the sources comment, Tim used to use that line and i would always call him on it. Maybe the realist is timmy, if he starts to take credit for everything we will know for sure.

  43. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @jarrett,

The funniest one ever was I think 2 days ago. Someone posted that their sister worked at the Ritz Carlton in NYC, and that there was about to be a major shakeup with the team, as if workers at the Ritz would know something like that. Some people on this site need serious help.
