Aqib Talib Trial Has No Bearing On Mark Dominik

March 27th, 2012

"Hey, Mr. Glazer, did you hear Mike Mayock say on the NFL Network last night that Stephon Gilmore has the best ball skills of any corner in the draft? Oh, you have Bright House cable at home? I'm sorry about that."

The years-old, fiery, often heated debate among Bucs fans — “Should troubled Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib stay or go?” — arose once again yesterday when his trial on gun-related assault charges was delayed until June.

This episode is just one of many that have surfaced with Talib, seemingly every four to six months, since he was drafted by the Bucs.

At least the man is not boring.

Some — such as Joe — believe the delay of the trial scheduled weeks after the draft raises the stakes that Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik will draft LSU cornerback Morris Claiborne with the fifth overall pick.

But hold up, says Joe’s good friend, “The Commish,” Justin Pawlowski of WQYK-AM 1010. Pawlowski is of the mind that Talib’s status with the long arm of the law in Texas has not now, nor will influence Dominik’s draft board.

I sincerely doubt Aqib Talib’s situation is effecting anything the Buccaneers are doing this off-season. I believe that Talib will be looked at as a luxury if he is with the team and allowed to play in 2012. Mark Dominik has always told me that you can never have enough quality cornerbacks. The Buccaneers have already signed one as a free agent, and I wouldn’t be shocked if another one is drafted in late April either.

This is an interesting thought to Joe. Dominik likely was approaching the 2012 season, prudently, with the thought that Talib would not be available because of his legal hassles, and the shadow of a suspension from NFL warden commissioner Roger Goodell looming.

Whatever amount of games Talib suits up for the Bucs in what very well could be his final season with the team (his current contract expires after the 2012 season) is simply gravy on Dominik’s plate of mashed potatoes.

    Boom.

Talib as your 3rd best corner behind Claiborne/Steph Gilmore in the 2nd and Eric Wright = Ridiculous depth

  2. bucbelevr Says:

Okay….but his salary can’t be something so small as to sniff at?!? If indeed he is looked at as a luxury, cut his salary, draft Claiborne too. We can always look at CB’s that are cut from teams after the draft, there are always some. Plus, Asante Samuel has way too high of a cap number in Philly, they are likely to cut him maybe before draft, as I doubt he’ll restructure according to his comments. Cut Talib’s salary, if he’s such a luxury…

  3. Mr. Patrick Says:

With a new and promising coaching staff, talented free agents and young players getting older and better, this is actually a new beginning for the team. Why drag old baggage and trouble into it that could blow up at any time again and be a huge distraction. Cut him now and move on.

  4. Bricen Says:

Cut him so mylew can play? I’ll take my chances with talib. If he’s gone foe more than, say, 8 games cut him.

  5. Bricen Says:

oh and talib’s contract is 5 year 14 mil. peanuts for a starting corner.

  6. Jerry Tidwell Says:

This thought is total speculation, but perhaps the Aqib trial delays are related to the prosecution having issues with the case?!

  7. Pete Dutcher Says:

Don’t forget…we still have Talib’s annual event to look forward to…wonder what it will be this year…striking a nun?

  8. Pete Dutcher Says:

Oh wait, that would be the nun’s fault for calling him “brother”.

  9. Eric Says:

If the guy isnt in prison or under suspension bring him in and let him compete for a job.

If he performs, play him. If he gets beat out cut him.

    Whats so hard about that?

Schiano stated he likes competition. Which will be a refreshing change.

I agree with the premise of not counting on him or being influenced on draft day because we have him – but to me the same thing applies to Blount.

  10. Heath Says:

It’s all just a money grab anyway. Talib has never done anything wrong, people are just trying to extort him for cash. It happens to all NFL players. Remember all the times Derrick Brooks got falsely accused of punching a bus driver or the time that Warrick Dunn had to go vigilante and shoot at the murderer of his mother? It’s just something that all high profile guys have to deal with.

  11. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ bucbelevr

Talib makes a ROBUST $1.8 million this year…peanuts.

No way Samuel gets cut. Somebody out there will overpay for him via trade.

  12. Pete Dutcher Says:

    @Eric
Blount is a far cry from Talib. Blount does not get into trouble annually. He had two incidents…two…and both were years ago and very minor. To compare the two is beneath you as the quality poster you normally are.

    @Heath
I hate to insult anyone…but that is the most idiotic post outside of Thomas’s posts I have read in a long time.

I’m 100% for cutting Aqib “Pac Man” Talib.

  13. Joe Says:

    Pete:

You clearly are not catching Heath’s very well-placed dry sense of humor.

BWWWHHAHAHAHAHAH!!! Exactly. There’s no way the Bucs can have great players who are also high character guys. That has never happened. Dunn, Brooks, Lynch, Graham, and so on……

The only type of headcase I would put up with a Keyshawn type. And him, only for a limited amount of time.

    STOP PAYING VIOLENT THUGS!

  15. Eric Says:

Didnt Michael Pittman attack the same girl three times?

Ray Lewis went to trial on a murder case. Still playing to this day – and admired.

Big Ben (allegedly) raped a woman.

King of Turds committed numerous atrocities.

Talib is an amateur………….Broke into a coaches house as a teen, Slapped a cabby around and was barely even prosecuted , chewed out Raheem Morris, and shot at a total scumbag who richly earned it……………………….

    No big deal.

  16. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

Hey, look at all these scumbags!!!

We can have our own scumbag!!!

Scumbags have rights too, you know. After all, it’s a right, not a privilege to be in the NFL.

That’s right, I WANT him representing me.

  17. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Eric – Joe stuck “allegedly” before your raped comment. Ultimately Joe’s responsible for what’s written here.

Believe Pittman tried to run over his wife on his driveway in Arizona. Who hasn’t thought about doing that. ;)

  18. Brad Says:

Dominik is not influenced by anything is a very true statement. He has his plan and sticks too it no matter the situation. The fact we have the worse D in history doesnt matter, the fact we need linebackers doesn’t matter, the fact Talib is a cancer doesn’t matter, the fact we need guys all over our secondary doesn’t matter. Whoever was targeted in the draft will be drafted regardless of our team needs. I think it will be Richardson cause drafting Clairborne makes too much sense. Mark is apparently smarter than everyone else. IMO this is his last year as our GM.

  19. Bobby Says:

@Brad….are you still sniveling on here??? Didn’t I ask you to stop your constant whining?? You’re so much like a teenage girl….

  20. BucFanFromLa Says:

I respect Mayock a lot. I am truly torn over this pick.
