“Going To Spend Whatever It Takes To Win”

January 2nd, 2012

Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Wait a minute.

The Bucs’ lasting contender plan always included signing free agents when necessary to reach the ultimate goal. The whole build-through-draft mantra got a little misconstrued by some folks, so Joel Glazer told media today at One Buc Palace.

Glazer referred to the notion that the Bucs are draft-only builders unwilling to spend as a “slight misconception.”

“You do have to supplement with other players, free agents,” Glazer explained. “We are going to spend whatever it takes to win.”

Glazer also reiterated what Joe’s heard Bryan Glazer say previously, that the Bucs under Team Glazer never have lost a desired player from the team because the team wouldn’t pay him, and poor drafting is what’s led to years of low payroll. Joel Glazer used the examples of Donald Penn and Davin Joseph as players that blossomed on the Bucs and were rewarded accordingly and said that trend would hopefully continue. (Funny, there was no Quincy Black reference/)

Of course, this essentially is years-old news made fresh today. However, Joe realizes many fans think Team Glazer is just rationalizing reasons for frugality when it comes to player payroll.

It will be fascinating to see how many impact free agents are brought in when the free agency bell rings in March. And, of course, the cash chatter basically becomes moot in 2013, when the new labor agreement will force every NFL team to spend nearly the same amount of hard cash on salaries.

I’ve got to admit it’s getting better
    a little better every time
Yes I admit it’s getting better
    A little better since……….

Great news! Now walk the walk and make the right hire. I really think the Glazers want to do right after this awful season. No more London “home” games AND spending?

    YES!!!

  2. gotbbucs Says:

i find it very hard to believe that there isnt already a plan in place. the glazers dont seem to me like guys that would make a move like firing an entire coaching staff without having someone hiding in the bushes.

  3. Nick Says:

Glazer also reiterated what Joe’s heard Bryan Glazer say previously, that the Bucs under Team Glazer never have lost a desired player from the team because the team wouldn’t pay him

    ================

I wonder Keenan McCardell, a FA veteran, is thinking.

  4. Bucsfansince1997 Says:

They don’t release players because they don’t want to pay them, they just release them when they turn 26.

  5. Bucsfansince1997 Says:

At least the Buc’s players that come back next year will have had a full season of rest and can come back strong next season, when the coach doesn’t have them play for him, but rather for their jobs.

  6. Bobby Says:

Gee….they’re actually not selling the team like so many have said???….’rolleyes’. They will spend on FA’s this off season and with our draft picks this year we should just about have the pieces in place. They definitely need to bring in depth along the D-line at DT. I’d like to see Richardson in the draft but my money will be on them taking Claiborne if he’s there. I actually think Elbert Mack has game and if Ahmad Black can pan out at safety and T-Jack gets back to form we’d have good depth at safety with Grimm healthy. Should be a fun off season.

  7. Bucsfansince1997 Says:

I would like to nominate Charlie Sheen for head coach. He can teach the team how to be winning.

  8. FlBoy84 Says:

Noticed that Black’s name was missing as well Joe. Had to add the “and Quincy Black” in there myself listening to the news conference. Listening to Dominik’s ” I was working feverishly in my office” excuse for not being seen/heard from for the last two months, and the “timing was bad” for adding free agents last off-season made me think letting him go might have been a decent idea as well. Sometimes you just gotta grow a pair and man up and say “I screwed up and overestimated the talent of some of these guys, and maybe should’ve added a few free-agents to supplement this years roster”. Won’t ever happen, but a candid, honest answer would be refreshing from some of these guys once and awhile. Liked the fact that when asked about the lack of veteran leadership on the team, the reporter didn’t buy Dominik’s “lots of veterans on our O-Line” spiel and asked how that helped the defense. Dominik still didn’t answer the question, but glad he wasn’t let off that easy. Funny how the conference was ended shortly after that.

  9. Tampa2 Says:

Joe, don’t forget the famous Glazer saying, Money will never be a problem!
Of course they meant money for them, but it sounded good when they said it.

  10. thibs5599 Says:

If they do what they said they will do. Come march every fan who complained about team glazer being cheap will be silent. Cant wait, there is no evidence of them being cheap more likely smart businessmen. Bucs know who deserves to be on this team and who does not, i am sure they will replace the undeserving with some free agents over the next two years. In 2010 we won 10 games, the glazers were probably curious to see what thissame team could have done two years in a row. Now they know

  11. buccin cane Says:

I know its still early but as a previous poster posted i dont think the glazers make this move and fire the entire coaching staff without some big name coach in mind. The reason i say big name is i dont think they would give a lesser name coach the authority to bring in the entire staff especially with a few decent coaches on Rah’s staff like Stukes and Millard. IDK just sayin….

  12. buccin cane Says:

@gotbbucs… my bad couldnt remember ur name while i was typing my post no disrespect but i totally agree with your post

  13. Patrick Says:

I wouldn’t necessarily dislike or hate it if Fisher came here, but I’m not really crazy about him. The Titans/Oilers had a lot of bad seasons under him and he only made the playoffs like 6 times? Out of 15 or 16 seasons?

I think Fisher is a decent coach, and he would definitely bring more discipline to this team. but we could do better I think.

Tom Clements is a very interesting option, but I think we’re taking a risk if we promote another position coach to HC.

But after seeing the amazing performance Matt Flynn put up coming off the bench yesterday, I want Clements around Freeman!!

Tom Clements for OC, Herm Edwards for DC. Not so sure on who I want as HC yet.

  14. Eric Says:

Dom Capers would bring a hard nose aproach

  15. buccin cane Says:

@at Eric i like the capers suggestion but is he or isnt he a 3-4 guy not really sure i thought it was 34 tho

  16. LOLJFH Says:

    ProFootballtalk.com:

The first NBCSportsTalk on the newly christened NBC Sports Network had a juicy nugget in the first five minutes. Peter King reported that Jeff Fisher will interview for the Rams head coaching job this week.

It’s believed that Fisher wants to go to a place with a quarterback in place. St. Louis certainly qualifies. Fisher has close ties to the Rams. Fisher’s agent is Marvin Demoff, the father of Kevin Demoff, Rams COO and Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

It sounds like Fisher is going to be back in the NFL this year. St. Louis gets the first crack at speaking with him and possibly making him the next Rams head coach.

My vote contiinues to be for Billick!

  17. LOLJFH Says:

Two other sites report Fischer is on his way to Tampa and Miami for interviews as well.

  18. Bucbeliever Says:

Since the plan now is to get an experienced head coach…the choices are limited. Expect Fisher and Billick to get some calls this week.

    I’d be ok with either.

For position coaches…try to get the ol’ Bucs in. Brooks at LB coach and Lynch at DB coach would be neat. However, after the last few years, experienced coaches would be ideal.

    GO BUCS!

  19. BucfaninMI Says:

    Billick or Marty.

  20. canadianbuc Says:

    LOLJFH what sites?

  21. buccin cane Says:

@BucfaninMI…. Marty who….plz not shotty. I was on board with the billick suggestion but you might have just went overboard with dat one buddy.

  22. JC De La Torre Says:

Patrick, Clements has been an OC in the NFL – in fact his offense added 155 points over the previous season for Buffalo under Kelly Holcomb of all people.

Under his tutelage, Favre had one of his statistically best seasons and we did see how Rodgers has turned out – not to mention the Flynn kid.

  23. K2theSoldier Says:

Yeah please don’t lemme hear any calls for Marty. He’s toast. Brian Billick is good, he’s a good call.

  24. Patrick Says:

    @eric

Dom Capers sucked in Houston as a HC. Good defensive coach but he doesn’t run the right scheme for us.

I know this option may not be popular with people, but Marty Schottenheimer might be a good option. While he may be a “choker” in the playoffs, he’s turned around several teams and has won 60% of his games as a HC. However, he is kind of old…..68 I believe. Might as well interview Jimmy Johnson too.

He had four coaching stints in Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington, and San Diego. He was successful in three of those stops. He got fired in Washington after one year, but still had an 8-8 record.

  25. bucfanjeff Says:

    Billick…offensive minded, experienced, detailed oriented.
Williams is not even a good DC and WAS not a good HC.
    Fisher has proven nothing.

  26. K2theSoldier Says:

^^Fisher has proven nothing besides being one yard short of winning a Super Bowl, having a winning career record and respected all around the league. Seriously dude?

  27. SensibleBuc Says:

I’m officially cynical regarding anything Joel or Bryan have to say regarding this team…

NOW you want to spend whatever it takes guys? SHOW ME.

NOW you have a plan? SHOW ME.

  28. BucfaninMI Says:

I think Marty is due, regardless, who ever they hire I’m gonna root for. I want someone anyone to be successful here! We need a dynasty!!!

  29. McBuc Says:

FLBoy…He bsaically did. He said he bought into the 10-6 record. That coupled with the short off season was the reason for not signing free agents. Some of you guys call anything they say an “excuse”.

  30. Garv Says:

Fisher, Billick, Marty…….experienced men who have won, would command respect and get good assistants through their connections.
We need an ENTIRE Staff, good coaches. I believe we need a NAME guy who could get things done a little faster perhaps.

Having typed that, I am not against a QUALITY OC or DC. Exciting times Buc fans, exciting times.

  31. patrickbucs Says:

How about finding the next potential Payton or Mccarthy? All great coaches had to be given a shot at some time. I think an experienced one possibly that has worked in a succesful organization or afew for a while. Do you guys really want to see Dom Capers, Mooch, type guys?

Much better then Morris; just really hope they get someone who has a grasp on the current NFL and it’s ever evolving trends. Maybe a veteran coach and an up and coming off and def coordinators.

  32. K2theSoldier Says:

@PatrickBucs, to find the next Mccarthy or Payton we have to find the next Brees or Rodgers. Just saying, there’s nothing that tells me that the quarterbacks don’t make the coach. If Freeman didn’t turn the ball over 500 times this year maybe Raheem would still have a job.

  33. McBuc Says:

K@…good point, but even the way Free played last year we would have lost…The defense was just that bad. Our offense is not built to score 60 points a game!

  34. McBuc Says:

    That have bK2…

  35. Greg Says:

NFL Network “speculating” Fisher to St Louis, and the Bucs looking at Mike Sherman and Mike Mularkey. Hopefully the guy that was reporting it was just being a monkey throwing feces at the wall, especially if Sherman’s reign would be like his last one at T A&M.

  36. Bobby Says:

I’m more concerned about a good offensive minded coach. We will have a decent defense with a good DC but no one is going to stop Drew Brees so you have to be able to put points up to keep up with them. I look at New England and I think if their defense can be that bad but they win because of offense then a very good offense with a middle of the road defense can be just as effective.

  37. Bucnjim Says:

It goes both ways with free agents and spending money. Fans tend to block out the fact that a player has to WANT to come to Tampa. I would have to wonder whether some of these guys said no thanks to playing for an unstable at best team. Hopefully; the new regime will have the respect of the fans and especially players from the entire league.

  38. McBuc Says:

Bobby, I agree, but Bill B is a defensive guy, so maybe the right OC is more important…just saying…

  39. McBuc Says:

Bucnjim…Maybe…Albert said no at first, he only came when there was no where else to go…

  40. patrickbucs Says:

    @K2 very good points…

Drew Bress wasn’t an All-Pro until Payton worked with him please keep that in mind. He was so good they drafted Rivers and let him go FREE, he sucked until his last year. Payton worked with him and put the pieces and offense into place. Same with Rogers, he was drafted 24th overall. Both of those coaches ran excellent offenses in which they were given the opportunity to begin with. Both were fortunate to do well does’t mean the next dude will be as good.

McBuc.. good point as well our defense sucks, would have been better if offense controlled the ball more. Who knows, Freeman has played 2 years and the whole offense was a mess.

If Mularkey is the next coach I may cancel my season tickets after all..just joming see what the plan is, developed a pretty good offense in Atlanta.

  41. Brown Bags Have Been Removed Says:

Let’s drop this talk about getting retread coaches. Some of the names can be tantalizing, but you hype them because you worry the coaches will grab another 32 year old D-Backs coach.

Glazers will look at star OC and DC candidates. Names like Clements and Mularky can alsy draw crowds. It is time we get someone who is either proven and not past his prime or a rising star with huge upside potential.

Grabbing a Schottenheimer or Billick isnot much different than catching Haynesworth on the downslide. Someone else already got the best out of them.

With that said, whatever the Glazers do I will support. (They’ve already impressed me by firing the whole staff and pulling their name out of future London games) But I will be skeptical of retreads coming in here.

  42. Thomas 2.2 Says:

Just a “slight” not complete misconception. More and more I am being proven correct.

I didnt hear any denial that Rah was hired for peanuts to hedge against Gru not taking another job that voided their obligation to him.

I heard an intent or acceptance to hire less than a big name which carries some concern about frugality.

I have an open mind today. The past is history, but yes it was a budget not a plan. They didnt even pursue needed free agents like Sproles or Nick Barnett and Foster was not and may never be ready to play MLB.

A decision to spend going forward says nothing about the last 6 years of frugality.

Buc fans who spoke out against this low budget should feel Proud for calling these guys out and boycotting if it truly changes.

    The future appears bright! Finally!

  43. bucfanjeff Says:

@K2theSoldier, and with all those “winning season” Fisher has, he couldn’t win the SB. Be respected around the league gets you nothing. It’s about winning a championship, check that, championshipS. I’m not sold.

I’m open to whomever will implement an aggressive passing attack, a pass first offense. I like Del Rio as DC because his defenses have always been good and physical dating back to his Panther days.
I tend to favor Billick because of his obvious attention to detail and knowledge.
Regardless, we need a whole new staff, we have pretty descent talent and hold the #5 pick. I just want them to get the coach right.

  44. K2theSoldier Says:

@Patrick, Brees wasn’t at this level, but he was pretty damn good in San Diego. He was let go from San Diego because of the shoulder injury. Miami stayed away from him as well because of the shoulder. Performance didn’t have anything to do with him leaving.

All I’m saying is that it’s very difficult for a coach to be successful without a good QB. When Freeman was good, so was Morris. When Freeman was bad (2 of the 3 years) Morris was bad. Who knows what other top tier coaches would be without good QBs.

  45. 918bucs Says:

gotbbucs, there is a plan in place ask the roof cleaner dude.

  46. Garv Says:

Kind of off topic but I’ve always believed that had the Buccaneers had the CAP money to get Drew Brees, he and Jon would have brought us more Super Bowls.
That’s just my opinion and certainly moot now!

  47. Patrick Says:

I actually think that if Jon Gruden had stayed and we had promoted Dominick, we would’ve been fine. Gruden would’ve had some power over Dom, and we’d have a little mix of both. Gruden=a guy who likes experience and some veterans Dominick=a guy who likes going young.

Maybe Dom is a better GM than I think, but we’ll see how all his picks do under another head coach next season.

  48. squadoosh Says:

I personally would love to see Brian Billick get hired here as HC. As for D coordinator..Rod Marinelli…not sure that one is very likely though but it would be awesome none the less.
By the way whoever commented on our safeties thinking we are in pretty good shape is way off in my opinion. I think our safetes are awful…Tanard is probably the worst tackler in the NFL I literally have never seen a player be responsible for so many big plays and miss so many tackles. I understand that he came in after a long layoff but he refuses to wrap up on people and they just bounce right off of him and keep on going….its freakin disgusting. Cody Grimm is average and hasn’t proven he can stay healthy..Sean Jones can’t cover or tackle, and Black is a rookie who hasn’t been able to show much of anything either way. I think we need a free agent safety and also a free agent corner to supplement our draft to fill the holes on this team (not to mention linebacker).

  49. sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

The more I think about what went down today, the balder I become. Happy? Hell yeah, that mental midget thing really pissed me off. But, What was that press conference all about? Its never been about the money? WTF? What did you just say? Were going to take our time finding the perfect guy? Winning will sells tickets? Hello? The fricken pirate ship is sinking! I don’t know about you but I’m getting the same feeling I had when free agency hit last year: all this excitement and we sign a punter. Know what I’m saying?

I might piss people off but Jeff Fisher is the best guy out there and if they don’t throw money at him then they are really fing dumb. I know his record is debatable but if they hire a no name and they start losing again, then you can forget it. They will lose all credibility. Wait, they already lost all credibility. Fisher will sell tickets and revitalize the franchise. The OC/DC will win games.

Hey Glazers, the hunt is on and time is the prey. Look around you, the team we grew up with is falling apart. Act like you got a pair and take massive direct action.

  50. LOLJFH Says:

Canadianbuc – yardbarker.com was one, can’t remember other now that I am engrossed in Rose Bowl,

  51. eric Says:

Jeff Fisher is a rock solid coach.

Kind of guy who isnt going to put up with much BS and command respect. Dom did throw Rah to the wolves a few times, most notably not getting five much help. Rah had no power to complain.

    Fisher would.

Lots of NFl coaches dont win it all untill their second stint. Bellichick, Gruden, Vermeil, Coughlin, Dungy, Shula to name a few.

  52. chiodo08 Says:

The true fans spoke and turned their collective backs on these pious greedy owners…

  53. Bman Says:

Warren Sapp _ Glaziers wouldn’t pay him

  54. Gack Says:

Hahahahahahaha spend whatever it takes..ahahaha. almost had me

  55. patrickbucs Says:

@K2.. I didn’t look it up, but I’m almost positive they drafted Eli, traded for Rivers the year before Brees hurt his shoulder. Rivers sat the bench for a year while Brees played, they were trying to gain trade value for him…
unfortunately in his last game he hurt his shoulder, and yes Saban wanted him Miami wouldn’t pass his physical. Saban may still be in Miami..

I think it’s semantics at this point.. Every great coach was given a chance at 1 point, maybe there is someone out there that we can find that’s that person. But with succesful years of experience.

  56. 941-Bucs Says:

@Bman – sorry but that is a wrong statement. Gruden and Sapp didn’t always see eye to eye and eventually Sapp got let go!

  57. 941-Bucs Says:

It had nothing to do with paying him, The coach wanted him gone not the owners!

  58. Armando Says:

Not lost a drafted player over money? What about Sapp, Rice, Lynch, B Kelly, Dunn

  59. admin Says:

    Joe here,

They key part of the quote was players they wanted to keep. Lynch had a load of injury concerns, etc. There’s a story for each of them. They won a Super Bowl without Dunn, so I’m not sure how he could possibly be a part of what you’re talking about.

  60. Bucboi2280 Says:

Last time im saying this i promise. Russ Grimm-HC, Tom Clements-OC, and Del Rio or Spags as -DC.
