Back In Black

July 27th, 2011

Hey, look, Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik came to an agreement — can’t sign until Friday — with one of his own linebackers.

But no. It is not Barrett Ruud, it is Quincy Black.

Per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, and his cohort Anwar Richardson, they Twittered Black came to terms with the Bucs today.

Bucs LB Quincy Black is back in the fold in Tampa. Five-year, $29 million deal with $11.5 million guaranteed.

Now in Joe’s eyes, Black has to step it up. Far too often Black was heard of as being in the starting lineup, but not seen (making plays). With a potential rookie middle linebacker starting, it is Black who has to be a leader and starting racking up some big time plays.

    Glad he’s back. Predicted it.

On a side note, Bruce just signed with the Bengals.

  2. USMC-BUC Says:

I can dig it. he needs more plays like that sack @Carolina

  3. BOb Says:

    crapkowski

  4. Oahubuc Says:

Wow. This probably bowled Ruud over like a third string running back.

  5. m.wesley Says:

    Well Tommy2.2 Jane just signed

  6. Joe Says:

Bruce just signed with the Bengals.

Bruce who? Don’t recall anyone on the Bucs named “Bruce.”

  7. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Gradkowski

  8. BOb Says:

gradkowski joe, gradkowski. i know, whooopty do!

  9. Travis Says:

Pete was refering to “Brude Gradkowski” I dont know how thats even relevant, but ok…. cool story bro….

Im willing to bet that Ruud wont make as much as Quincy just signed for wherever he signs. Lets wait and see 🙂

  10. Bob Says:

Get Davin Joseph re-signed and go out and get Johnathan Joseph……

  11. FLBoyInDallas Says:

It’s certain that Ruud will not take less than Black now. That would be embarrassing for him and he’d take it as a slap in the face. Expect him to demand $6 million a year for at least 4 years with at least $12 million guaranteed. Less than that and he probably walks.

  12. Theodore Says:

    @Oahubuc LMAO

  13. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dominik has really handled Ruud almost like Mike Brown has handled Carson Palmer. Very firm. Makes me wonder if Ruud has a real d-ck of an agent that Dominik just really hates.

  14. td32 Says:

Can someone explain to me why Dom gave Black this kind of money? Seriously, this is some kind of joke, right? Guys has done very little in 4 seasons with the Bucs, and they back up the Brinks truck. I’m baffled.

  15. FLBoyInDallas Says:

$5.8 million isn’t exactly the Brinks truck. Nice try at sarcasm, though.

  16. Jrock (mobile) Says:

I’m no Ruud fan, to preface the next sentence.

Black doesn’t play consistently or make enough “splash” plays to warrant that kind of money. Which is the same thing you can say about Ruud, so why did we just throw that much money at him?

I’m glad he’s back. But wtf? Rather this story be about Davin

  17. Bubba Says:

Just FYI – 16 UDFA signed with the Bucs today: http://www.buccaneers.com/news/article-1/Names-to-Know-More-Undrafted-Rookies-Come-Aboard/fd5b19fc-224c-40a4-b700-29ac6fd05eb0

  18. Mauha Deeb Says:

So, is it a certainty Ruud isn’t coming back?

  19. barton1017 Says:

so when am i gonna click onto this page and see that Dom has signed Ray Edwards and Jonathan Joesph? we need 4 more signings and were division champs,
    1) Davin Joesph
    2) Ray Edwards
    3) Reggie Bush or Darren Sprolles (i would be fine with either)
    4) Jonathan Joesph

im sure some will say keep dreamin and to you i say “i will” BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!

  20. td32 Says:

FlBoy, it’s not? First, how much do you think the average Brinks truck carries? Probably not $6 million. Second, do you really think Black has earned that? Considering some of Dominik’s recent FA signing’s(Clayton and Ward), I think we should be skeptical. $11 million guaranteed is an awful lot for a player like Black.

  21. MOBucs Says:

Hefty contract for such an average career so far in my opinion. Time to step up in a big way Quincy!

  22. tony2cents Says:

well per Joseph’s latest tweet, http://twitter.com/#!/DavinJoseph75, still nothin…

  23. Camby Says:

Im all for bringing back some of these guys, but dont just give money away to players like Black, who have done little to earn it. Are we still waiting for this guy to live up to potential? If it hasnt happened yet, its not going to happen. Foolish signing IMO

  24. MOBucs Says:

    Thanks for the link Bubba.

  25. Leighroy Says:

TD32…. it’s as simple as 50 million in cap room and wanting to resign your own guys. It’s probably more than his market value sure, but I think they know that Black will be a solid though not spectacular player for most of his 5-year deal. At least we know what we’re gunna get.

  26. Mauha Deeb Says:

“Black doesn’t play consistently or make enough “splash” plays to warrant that kind of money. Which is the same thing you can say about Ruud, so why did we just throw that much money at him?”
$5.8 Million a year for a starting linebacker is dirt cheap and if he does pick up his game, he is locked in for 5 years. I can’t see why anyone is making a big deal out of this. You all knew we were gonna sign him.
If the Bucs came at Joseph with this kind of offer he would laugh and spit in RahmDoms faces.

@barton1017 Why would we pickup a DE when we just drafted two in the first and second rounds, respectively? If there is going to be any DE signings it will be Stylez White for cheap and possibly a Free Agent DT to cover for Price. But no way do the Bucs shop outside the team for a DE.

  27. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Calling out your prediction on the JBF.com comments section = really pathetic.

  28. wc3310 Says:

I bet some play calling duties come along with that raise… someone has to do it with no Ruud! And you don’t think Raheem would trust a rookie do you

  29. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I really love this time of year, but I always get reminded of just how much I hate the bitching and moaning that ensues with every transaction. Pathetic.

  30. Brandon Says:

Those of you that hate on Quincy have no clue. The Sam LB in the T-2 rarely racks up the stats and you can say Black disappeared, but what he really did was his job only to see Ruud NOT do his. Statistically speaking, Black had a superior 2010 season to any other LB in the T-2 since it came to Tampa.

I suspect that paying a Sam LB $6mil per, that Black will NOT be coming off the field in 2011… a move to the middle, a la Shelton Quarles, may be coming. Of course I’ve been saying the Bucs would re-sign Black all along, and they would let Ruud walk all along, and that Buc SHOULD be the Mike…all along. Oh yeah, and took everybody else’s crap because of it.

You guys “say” you have total faith in Dominik, looks like Dominik and I have been on the same page for a while.

Calling out your prediction on the JBF.com comments section = really pathetic.

    ++++++++++++++++

Not owning up to your prediction (especially when they’re absolutely wrong) is even more pathetic.

  32. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

    Brandon,

I don’t make predictions on the Internet, D-Bag….

  33. ScottyinCali Says:

Da’Quan is in the fold….;) so tweets Adam Shefter

  34. Dew Says:

    Good post Brandon.

I sure hope Dominik isn’t making Joseph feel left out. His tweets are kind of downers. I heard on TobyDavid today Dominik is having dinner with Davin tonight but his tweets don’t sound like it. I hope that is true.

  35. BucFan941 Says:

    HIRE GREG OLSON…WHY DO YOU CARE..take it easy..ima make a prediction right now..bucs go 10-6 again..am i a D-bag now

  36. Tampa--->Baaaaaaayyyy Says:

Quincy Black was the only starting LB for the Bucs to be considered effective against the run.

Big, fast, athletic… what is there to hate?

Seriously, why is everyone so critical of their own home team players? What is wrong with some Buc fans these days?

  37. Brandon Says:

If being right makes me a d-bag, so be it. Here’s a prediction from last year I made on the St. Pete TImes where I said the Bucs would be 10-6 or 9-7 (under brasho):

    http://www.tampabay.com/sports/football/bucs/tom-jones-bold-predictions-for-tampa-bay-buccaneers-in-2010/1120781

If that made me a d-bag, I don’t care. Here’s one more prediction for you, Greggo. You’re going to watch the entire 2011 Bucs season and when it ends you’re still going to be completely void of football wisdom and knowledge….and you too will be a d-bag without even making a prediction.

  38. Brandon Says:

Seriously, why is everyone so critical of their own home team players? What is wrong with some Buc fans these days?

    +++++++++++++

Because they would rather lose with their favorite players (Ruud, Williams, etc) than win with somebody else. I often wonder if the entire Ruud-love affair thing isn’t because he’s white. It seems Alstott and Lynch were far more beloved than Barber and Sapp ever were… and I can’t figure out any other reason why.

  39. Mauha Deeb Says:

Brandon’s buffoonery knows no bounds. He brings up that “prediction” at least 3 times a week in these forums alone. He sure is proud of himself.

  40. jvato24 Says:

I dont See quincy Black at MIKE … He is not quick enough to react … He will be the starting SLB imo

  41. HIRE GREG OLSON! Says:

Oh you’re brasho, the idiot from PFT. I’ve argued with your dumbass before…

  42. K2theSoldier Says:

haha bragging about making correct on a prediction is pretty stupid…
I’m sure Brandon predicted we’d be an 11 win team in 09…

  43. Patrick Says:

I’m sorry, but Black should NOT have gotten this much money. 11 million guaranteed is way too much for a guy who is average at best. I wanted to keep him as a backup because he makes nice plays at times, but is not consistent!

Well, still better than a Clayton signing i guess. Joseph should’ve been the first one signed.

We really need to upgrade our linebacker corps. I’ve never been a huge Ruud fan, but he’s our best bet for this year.

  44. Thomas "the Truth" 2.2 Says:

Quincy Jane Returns, ho hum. The price was not high generally but was high for Jane. I hope that he fulfills his potential finally, if he does the contract will be worthwhile.

  45. m.wesley Says:

Dominic is the G.M,he didnt just run his mouth and say a player was great he signed him to the money,I consider him an expert and like most of you said all who are we to argue with the experts money talks ruud I meant bullspit walks.

  46. barton1017 Says:

mahua deeb, wouldnt it be nice to have a veteran in a postion where you drafted a guy with a suspect knee? i know Stylez is a favorite but hes no Ray Edwards. we could rotate the rookies in and out with White until they learn the system, and didnt we draft 2 DT last year? but you say grab a free agent hmmmm that doesnt make sence.

  47. Mauha Deeb Says:

@barton1017 I don’t personally care for Stylez but he is the most legitimate option. He played very well with limited duties in previous seasons. Why go out an buy a top ten 4-3 DE when you just drafted 2 with the first to picks and have a bevy of healthy rotation guys behind them? That doesn’t make any sense at all.
The picking up a free agent DT makes loads of sense considering Price will not be ready when season starts. All our DEs are healthy. All our DTs are not. Its pretty simple if you just put even the slightest bit of thought into it.

  48. barton1017 Says:

mauha deeb, DaQuan Bowers dropped from a potential top 3 pick all the way to #52 in the 2nd round because of knee issues, i hope he plays for 10 years @ a pro bowl level but his knee is an issue. as far as DT, picking up a free agent (dont know who you would get with Cofield off the board), who out there is any better than Roy Miller? and why not just release Miller if your gonna get a free agent DT and save the $$$? that doesnt make sence to me so please explain im interested. i know your gonna say depth but theres plenty of 4th string undrafted DTs that would be alot cheaper. no need to spend big on a 3rd or 4th string DT. BUC IT IM OUT!!!!!!!

  49. Mauha Deeb Says:

@barton1017 Bowers passed his physical. Price is not even thinking about a physical right now.
Brandon Mebane is a great option. He would immediately become a starter putting Miller back to a rotational role. Where he belongs.
Why the heck would you release Miller when you are already down Price? You aren’t thinking right, man. We drafted Price to be a starter. Since he can’t start, we need someone who can. You pick up a starting caliber free agent BECAUSE Price can’t play.
What is the point of depth if they are just as good as your starters? McCoy and Miller is it! We need an upgrade to that. Mebane is my pick.

  50. Jonny Says:

Like I always said, we can afford to lose Ruud, but not Black. Black is good at what he does, not great, but certainly never bad, like Ruud and Geno are at times.

  51. Danny Says:

I can’t believe they gave Black that much money WOW. This guy does
not make many plays. I’ve been waiting a few years now to see what
Raheem loves about this guy. I hope he plays much better !

  52. Angelo Says:

I just don’t know what to think about this. He hasn’t stood out as a bad player, but hasn’t stood out as a good one either. The people watching the film say he’s a good player, but then again they said that about Ruud, and Ruud just doesn’t pass the eye test.

  53. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Is it safe to say that Quincy Black’s arms are bigger than Barrett Ruud’s chest?

  54. Dave Says:

I like Black and have been predicting him to break out for 2 years now…. it has not happened. He did play well last year until the injury and started showing signs of coming around.

That said, this is a gamble. Reminds me of the Clayton signing. Has the potential, has flashed it, and they are banking on the future, not rewarding the past…………….. we’ll see.

It also tells me Hayes & Black on the outside with Foster & McKenzie fighting for the MLB spot (which is a big edge to Foster since he is the latest and greatest toy and a 3rd round pick)

  55. RustyRhino Says:

When we don’t spend money on our own FA us fans complain when we do resign our own FA we complain… come on we have lots of room to reach the cap minimum. Black is not a superstar but a vet player in our system so we signed him. will we sign Ruud I don’t know
