Was Bucs QB Mike Glennon hung out to dry last year?
Joe mentioned in his “Top 30 Buccaneers Mysteries Of 2014” that it was awfully suspicious that the quarterback of the future and quarterback of the past but not the quarterback of the present, Mike Glennon, was benched.
Remember, it was Glennon, not turnover-prone Josh McCown, who rallied Tampa Bay at Heinz Field to beat the playoff-bound Steelers for half of the Bucs’ wins last year.
Lovie Smith continued to beat the drum that Glennon was his quarterback of the future, when the team was dreadfully obviously not in a playoff contention, and said he wanted his best 22 players on the field.
How can one be knighted “Quarterback of the Future” when he isn’t starting and a slug like McCown played — and losing — ahead of him? That simply doesn’t jibe.
It doesn’t jibe with Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com, who believes Glennon could be on a hot seat with the Bucs.
Why he could be on the hot seat: The Bucs hold the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, and they could use it on quarterbacks Jameis Winston or Marcus Mariota. That would leave Glennon in a tough spot. Veteran Josh McCown likely would be asked to play the role of mentor to a rookie, and it wouldn’t make a lot of sense to carry a third quarterback. Glennon has done some positive things when he has had a chance to play during the past two seasons, and he could have some trade value. Glennon is good enough to be a No. 2 quarterback for a lot of teams, and the Bucs could shop him for a draft pick.
Lovie is a decent poker player. But at some point, actions demonstrate more than words. Lovie’s benching of Glennon speaks volumes.
He can glowingly praise Glennon and talk about how much he respects him and thinks he will be the next Dan Marino, but when your team is the NFL’s worst and Glennon is losing valuable playing experience, and the guy you trot out can’t find enough ways to turn the ball over, well, in Joe’s eyes — and ears — nothing really needs to be said.
If Glennon was remotely as good as Lovie claimed, he would have been playing down the stretch. Unless, of course, Lovie was receiving angry e-mails from Team Glazer.

Drafting two means you don’t have faith in one. If you don’t have faith to draft a guy, you certainly won’t pick him at No. 1 overall. A waste on two fronts. Bucs have too many holes to do that.

Glennon isn’t on a hot seat…..being traded will be the best thing for his career….he has starting experience….is young, smart, durable, and has 2 years left on his cheap rookie contract….it’s a good time to trade him.
Teams needing QBs for either starting, backup or future development are……
Bucs, Titans, Jets, Bears, Bills, Texans, Rams, Cardinals, Saints, Browns, Broncos and perhaps others.
Bucs should recieve at least a 3rd round pick for Glennon……if I had to guess…..Arizona or St. Louis will be his next home.

You hit the nail on the head. The further away Glennon is from Lovie, the better his career will be. The worst part was watching Lovie trying to use the McCown injury as a crutch thru the whole situation. That he did not bench anyone and now that one guy is health he is going back in.

A lot of teams need a QB. What can you get for him though? I’d rather he stay for his contract. Would hate to see our drafted QB get injured and McCown has to come in and play.

The entire Glennon situation is a head scratcher. Lovie first liked him but didn’t like some things he did as a rookie, then named him the Bucs QB of the future, then benched him for McCown, then said he would be evaluated, now crickets. With the hiring of Koetter, I will not be shocked if the Buc’s starting QB next year will be Glennon. Lovie does not like young or rookie QB’s and we know with the Bucs anything is possible. And, in Glennon’s defense, we never have seen him play in a good offensive system or behind a good offensive line

Lovie is easily one of the 5 worst QB evaluators in league history and by far the worst currently. That people want him to be involved in picking a QB is mind boggling. Let him draft Leonard Williams, we know he’s not awful at evaluating defense. But letting him pick a QB is asking for disaster.

Hoping the Bucs keep Glennon over McCown (younger, cheaper, better), but would be happy for the guy to get a shot at proving his JBF critics wrong on a different team that actually believes playing your best QB is a smart thing to do. Just thinking how ironic it would be if he landed on the Browns and won the starting gig from Johhny Football 🙂

Considering Josh McCown could announce his retirement before the start of next season, I say keep Glennon as a backup…especially if the pick is Winston, since both are statues.
If the pick is Mariota…well then, I guess we need to find a good backup, because McCown is a good mentor, but not a good backup.

I would say it depends on the quarterback the Bucs draft. If they go Mariota, for example, the system will cater to a more mobile QB, and Glennon would not be the best option for backup.

Also, there is the possibility that the Bucs see another QB that will be in next year’s draft that they like better than the QB’s in this draft. Go with Glennon this year and see what he can do in this new offense and if he fails then draft next year’s guy. Just sayin’

The problem for the Bucs is if they go with Mariota & run somewhat of a spread that requires a mobile QB…..Glennon wouldn’t serve as a good backup……McCown could probably do it….
I do agree that if Winston is the choice…>Glennon would be a great backup and we should keep him unless we can get a 2nd for him. He’s worth every bit of his 3rd round pick….compare him to the Myron Lewis pick, for example.

Alot of the question always came about why did he not change the play. After watching the dumb play in the SB one must wonder why Wilson did not? Did either QB have the right to? Or did they have to do what they were told. My guess is Glennon had to to what he was told. I can excuse a lot of the passes that were off as more stability and working more together would solve that. More than 1.5 seconds to throw would also. And for those talking about short passes who just won MVP with a bunch of short passes? The new OC can design the offense to work with Glennon and these Receivers and Backs. Fix the offensive line and the defensive side a little more and we may be closer than you think. JMO.

My theory for Glennon’so benching… Lovie was looking forward to this season and was more worried about getting the #1 pick. On top of that, he wasn’t interested in seeing what Glennon could do in a high school offensive scheme that wouldnt teach him anything and wouldnt give Lovie a fair evaulation anyway. So rather than risking injury behind our terrible line or risk hurting his confidence and/or trade value he just sat him.

Glennon was only the QB of the future because of Tedford. It all fits if you imagine Tedford telling Lovie back in March that he could turn Glennon into a star.

I know people want to believe Glennon was benched by McCown for a variety of reasons other than the truth: He legitimately believed McCown was better and gave the Bucs the best chance to win. Nevermind that no one else with a sane mind would think that, that’s Lovie’s QB evaluation skills defined.
Remember, at one time Jason Campbell was so good in Lovie’s eyes, it afford him the ability to cut…Josh McCown. Dude should be banned from anything involving personnel or offense. Basically he should be a co-ordinator.

Glennon is an excellent prospect to have on your team. The Bucs would simply be foolish to trade the guy. In the very least he’s an insurance policy in case the #1 pick needs time to develop. That’s why they should draft Mariota and go with Glennon in case Mariota needs another year to learn pro sets. Worst case scenario Glennon has a bad year and the Bucs have Mariota ready to go. Best case scenario Glennon has a great year and the Bucs have all sorts of trade value. Most experts would agree that Mariota is a better long term prospect over Winston which is all that should matter.

Whichever QB we draft and I want Mariota, we will need a backup. I would not want McCown as #2 nor would I want him to mentor a pop warner QB let alone my hopeful franchise QB. I do not want McCown to ever take another snap as a buc. Keep glennon and kick McCown to the curb. Mariota is smarter than Winston. Winston is not immature, he is Stupid.

Keeping McCown as a backup on $5 million per year, instead of the more talented Glennon as a backup on $500k would be monumentally stupid by L&L. McCown’s paycheck compared to his actual level of ability is one of the biggest jokes in Bucs history.

I’ve been on the Mariotta band wagon for a while now, but the more I think about it, th emote I think the bucs may trade the number one pick. If Koetter had a top ten offense with David Garrard and Matt Ryan thrived under him, then Glennon may be our starter this season.
I would rather have Glennon than Winston. Think about Glennons time in the NFL. He has had piss poor coaching, ZERO play calling, bad protection. What has the guy had to work with? NOTHING! I am really starting to think maybe Lovie wasn’t lying. Maybe Glennon is our QB of the future. Honestly I wouldn’t hate it. The offense has to be creative, the QB cannot be handcuffed, and the O-line has to play above average.
Also, with Glennnon having the experience that he does, there would be no acclimation period. I really do feel for the guy, he has been thrown into a really bad situation. If we had Nick Foles and Mike Glennon as our NO 1 and NO 2 QB going into next season I think this team would be in really good shape. Imagine the Falcons offense paired with a defense under Lovie in it’s second year. Either way I am confident that as long as there are no heart procedures, MRSA, Taxi Cab assaults etc that next season should be fun to watch. I just hope I’m not in for another disappointing year as a Bucs fan…

Start Glennon and pay the price at the box office. There was literally NO ONE in the stands last season. I had season tickets in 2013 and there was a fair amount of fans still left. Watching on TV that stadium looks like attendance was cut in half in 2014 compared to 2013.
Start Glennon and NO ONE will show up. It will be worse than last season.
The Glazers aren’t as stupid as some people like to think.

What makes anybody think that Lovie has a heavy hand in the draft room? Lovie has final say over the 53 man roster, but not the draft. Licht is in charge of the draft. Do you really think that if Lovie had his way he would have drafted nothing but offensive players last year?
Everybody and their dog knows that you don’t waste the #1 pick in the draft on a freaking defensive end, so get that right out of your mind people. It will be a QB, 100%. Which one is anybodies guess right now, but the entire pre-draft focus will be on that 1st pick.

He looked like a prospect and his QB coach is here … just saying!!! Go with Winston and have a back up plan, which is not McCown, he is OK to coach and mentor Jameis.

The writers at Joebucsfan strike me as intelligent individuals, it’s one of the reasons why I come here to this website for Bucs news, yet it pains me every time they write an article about our QB situation, while at the same time taking another shot at McCown and how he was the worst QB in NFL… what’s worse, most of you readers eat it up as if they’re spilling gospel…seriously?
Were you guys watching the same season as I was watching? How can we say in the same breath, we had no offensive coordinator, the worst offensive line in buccaneers history, one of the worst running games, and then say McCown was terrible? HOW DOES THAT MAKE ANY SENSE!? All these other phases have to work in order to give our QB a freaking chance. Yet somehow in Joe’s mind, McCown should have overcome these insane adversities? Because Glennon could? Really!? Glennon won at Heinz field, awesome, loved it, made my season…however he also lost 2 winnable games against Minnesota and Cleveland…he went 1-4 this year as a starter…sorry guys I don’t see, and truth be known as bad as our line was this year, Glennon was a sitting duck… McCown gave us a little more hope of moving the ball. Point is, until we fix our Oline, NO QB will be successful, not even Tom Brady.

You are making excuses for a guy that won one game all year against the imploding Redskins en route to the worst record in all of football on the worst division in the history of the game. Ive said it before ill say it again Mike Glennon vs the Stillers was the toughest most hard nosed performance ive ever seen from any Bucs QB ever! And trust me Josh Freeman and Jeff Garcia were both pretty darn tough but Glennon showed more grit in that one game than either of them their whole tenure in Tampa. Freaking loved it! Best Bucs game I saw in way too long!

What sense does it make to trade a great backup to another team needing a great back up? Keep Glennon and dump McCown, plus Glennon is about $4 million cheaper than McCown. And don’t give me that crap about McCown being a leader and a mentor. If his leadership was that great then he wouldn’t have lead one of the worst offenses in the NFL. Glennon is far better than McCown and far cheaper. It would be insane to keep McCown on the roster over Glennon.

lol im gonna assume joe realizes pat is kinda late with his take and say duh anyway. glennon sucks and I wouldn’t have risked it with that offensive line because the bottom line is it’s obvious there are other teams that are gonna take a flyer on glennon and need him more than the bucs ever will and I think what lovie did was kinda brilliant, if you think about it there are truly only 2 qb’s being talked about in the draft so glennon’s value will never be higher than it is right now, he cant increase his value by playing lol. skills aside I think everyone here knows I think he sucks but it’s not about that because it was obvious a long time ago that he was gone and that was even before he was dubbed qb of the future. Ask the Cardinals how much a good third string QB is. I don’t get this whole “only keep two QB’s on your roster thinking.”
The most valuable position on your team and you only want to keep two players for that position. Stupid.
I would have no problem with the Bucs keeping Mcclown, if he renegotiates his contract and Glennon who is very affordable.

if glennon is good enough to be a number 2 ( or THE GUY imo ) and many teams have interest in him , why then would we be looking to get rid of him? it’s a fair statement that he should hold that same value for the bucs. , is it not.this is the kinf of bass-ackward thinking that had me watch several former bucs play in the superbowl. no less than a high number 2 for him and /or a starting caliber player. nothing less or we simply keep him and dump mccown and his inflated salary.ask a king’s ransom and let the market play out. why should we ask less and devalue our own players? tired,tired,tired of watching former players in the post-season. we need to start thinking like belicheck and not homer simpson.

DallasBuc, Freeman had a much, much better offensive line. Still not a great one, but better than the one we have now. He also had a few good players around him. Blount, for example, who has proven himself twice with the Pats.
