There goes Jorvorskie Lane
In many ways, Tampa Bay’s 2014 season was more bizarre than the MRSA-infected, quarterback-gone-mental, Fire-Schiano-billboards campaign of 2013.
There were plenty of real Bucs mysteries last year, and Joe’s revisiting the most interesting of the bunch over the next 30 days.
No. 30 – Jorvorskie Lane
The countdown starts inside the white lines.
On opening day, the Bucs handed the ball off to fullback Jorvorskie Lane in the first quarter of a scoreless game against Carolina. Backed up on the 4 yard line, Josh McCown handed the ball off to Lane, who made a nice cut, a patient move, to blow through a hole opened by Patrick Omameh and Demar Dotson on the right side of the line.
Lane rumbled 54 yards. (You can watch several NFL.com looks here.) Great run!
So when was Lane’s next carry? That came three weeks later, the final play of the third quarter at Pittsburgh. On 2nd-and-3, Lane got the rock and grinded out a couple of yards behind Logan Mankins. Not bad.
Lane’s next carry came when the season was out of reach.
Joe’s doesn’t get why the Bucs didn’t try to catch a little energy with the stocky fullback who was once a powerful running back at Texas A&M.
At the very least, Lane earned a few more after that impressive run, less than 15 minutes into the season.

Amen brother. I’ve been whining about the lack of a power back to go with our three RB’s and wondering about Mike James. (For the record, Joe is not whining about the lack of a power back. Joe’s merely pointing out the mysterious disappearance of Lane after a great run.–Joe
I had forgotten about Javorski Lane. That is amazing given that both teams in today’s have the ability to go into beast mode. And while everybody justifiably thinks Aaron Rodgers when you mention the Packers, Eddie Lacy and his 5-11 230lb battering ram certainly contributed significantly as well.
Where is our battering ram? If not James and not Lacy it’s time to draft one!!!

His most complete season was his second with Denver (2005) — he had four sacks, four forced fumbles and two interceptions. The fact that Lynch was able to put up those type of numbers late in his career is a testament to his durability.

As I have said countless times before, the answer to this question is the same answer to all of the mysteries surrounding the offenses poor play throughout the season.
The one common denominator is Marcus Arroyo and his inept, inexperience offensive play calling and scheming.
Really Joe, this isn’t rocket science.
Three or four games in and I had the answer and so did every other team we faced.

He is in Lovie’s basement forgotten, but we have found our offensive ghost who disappeared. We also have our defensive ghost who never showed up. Not that is another mystery.

I too often wondered on many of our short yardage situations why wasn’t Lane used? Agree with gatrbuc17, Cleveland has two first round picks and those two would be great additions. Not sold on Marriotta or Winston.

Another mystery….
How does a 6th round QB and a 3rd round QB meet head to head in this SB while flying so far under the radar during THEIR time leading up to their draft position?
Kind of crazy to me. Of course I know its more than the QB who makes the team who they are. But here we sit with the #1 overall pick in April and many think the pick has to be QB when we also have other MAJOR needs in the Trenches…..and that mindset is also a mystery to me……just saying.

“Pablo thinks the biggest mystery is why….Evan Rodriquez was not activated to play fullback after Lane was injured…..Pablo wonders if it could be this….
“Rodriguez allegedly had a felony assault charge, which eventually was reduced to a misdemeanor disturbance and trespassing charge after an alleged physical altercation with a female residence hall adviser during his time at West Virginia,”
“Pablo knows that there is a difference between signing someone to the practice squad and drafting a #1 QB….but, still….for diversity’s sake…why not give Pablo’s amigo a break”

The number 1 mystery for me is at what point did the Bucs start tanking the season to get Winston.

I think some of that was due to injury…that and we had no line help and were often in throwing situations so he didnt get the ball much, Joe.

This is going to be a great series. Number one has to be a toss up between running with McCown all year and not getting an OC when Tedford went ill. Personally I go with not getting an OC or consultant or anyone really. ANYONE!!
Better watch out though, Joe, or the opinion police will tell you to go be a Pats fan if you got nothing good to say about a 30-70 team!

It’s an even bigger mystery when you consider the practically non existent production from the other backs. At the very least they should’ve inorprated Lane into the gameplan more, if not feed him the ball for a few series to see what he can do. Bad coaching.

That was a FB dive, a play designed to get 2 yards at the most unless pass rushers get way too far up field and LBs run with the HB… it was a lightning strike play. I don’t have an issue with Lane not running the ball, at least from that particular formation and play, for another 3 weeks. The play was called to get the team out of its own shadow of the goal line. It was a once-every-10-years type play. There is no mystery.

The facts are clear….Lovie Smith cannot coach. He has no ability to evaluate talent, his defense is a joke, his game management is non-existent, and coaches will not work with him because he is not loyal to his staff..i.e. Marcus Arroyo.
Team Glazer will have this same mess in 2015 as they need to find a skilled NFL Coach, or at least a young, aggressive OC or DC to take over!
Lovie Smith put the 2nd team in against the Saints to lose the last game of the season. I will NEVER pay to watch the Buc’s again while he is HC.
Fire Lovie Smith now…..and since you can’t pry the big poodles lips from his butt…send them packing together!
