Jameis Watch: The Josh Freeman Effect

November 13th, 2014

jameis winston 1113

Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, national champion James Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s regular nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback to wear No. 5 ever in the state of Florida.

If the Bucs do not draft a quarterback in the first round next year, specifically uber-talented Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston, it may be because Team Glazer is still licking its wounds over the Josh Freeman debacle.

Freeman, the former leaky, sleepy franchise quarterback of the Bucs, drafted in 2009 by then-Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik, wigged out under the boot of former Bucs commander Greg Schiano and went mental.

After a woeful few games with current Bucs defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier in Minnesota, and a test drive with Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants, Freeman found himself out of the NFL in less than a year after beginning the 2013 season as a starting NFL quarterback.

Since, Freeman has gone into hiding as if he were Salman Rushdie.

It is because of this experience, the “Custodian of Canton,” eye-RAH! Kaufman of the Tampa Tribune, believes Team Glazer will be gun shy of selecting Winston when the Bucs are on the clock. This is what Kaufman detailed in his weekly visit with the one and only Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on the station that bears his name, “Mad Dog Radio,” heard exclusively on SiriusXM Radio.

eye-RAH! Kaufman: Look, the Bucs are going to get a top-five pick; there is no question about it. They need a quarterback, desperately. They need a franchise guy to build around. Chris, would you use the No. 2 pick in the draft on Jameis Winston?

Chris “Mad Dog” Russo: Tough call. Tough call. Tough call. He is very good. He’s had a good year. He was great against Notre Dame. He is a great athlete. I have no doubt he will be a good NFL player. He will be comfortable in that state [Florida] because that state is easy on him.

Kaufman: He might sell some tickets, Chris. He might sell some tickets. And you know what? There might be a lot of people out there picketing, too. You know that?

Russo: Well, you know the Glazers. What would the Glazers do in that situation?

Kaufman: Well, I think in light of what happened with Josh Freeman, Chris, and the fact his undoing was off-field issues that buried him and sank a once promising career. I think that is a giant caution sign against signing Jameis Winston. You make the wrong pick at quarterback; it sets you back three years. That is what has happened with Freeman here. I don’t think they take a chance. I don’t think they do.

If this is accurate, that Team Glazer has already scratched Winston off its wish list because of Freeman, that’s just downright sad. You can’t build a winning franchise by being bashful, and Team Glazer’s business acumen is nothing if not bold.

Did the Bucs give up on drafting a cornerback because of granny-hassling, helmet-wielding, cabbie-slugging, pistol-whipping Aqib Talib?

Did the Bucs give up on drafting a wide receiver because of blade-in-the-thigh, mattress-in-the-front-yard Mike Williams?

Did the Bucs give up on drafting a running back because Cadillac Williams blew out both knees?

Did the Bucs give up on drafting a safety because Tanard Jackson couldn’t put down the bong (allegedly)?

Joe could go on. There is nothing to suggest Winston is remotely like Freeman in any way. Joe understands where Kaufman is coming from, but if a team strikes out on a draft pick, that doesn’t mean you give up drafting at the same position, especially a team’s most important and needy position.

  1. Jim Says:

Those miscreants won 10 games in 2010. There are no flukes in the NFL.

  2. Destinjohnny Says:

He is a more accurate josh freeman – he dosent get past his first read

  3. INDYbucsfan Says:

You obviously don’t understand where he is coming from. Like he said, missing on a QB is at least 3 yrs down the drain. You can miss on literally every other position and be alright.
That being said, I just want to go to the playoffs, idc how.

  4. brett Says:

josh freeman was a 3-4th round talent who rose because of the massive hype machine that year. Winston is already projected to be top 10 talent. no comparison there. now , as for extra-curricular stuff , whoa nelly!! tough, tough call. mariota or Winston ? after 38 years without a franchise qb , I say take the chance. just my 2 cents , but with our track record ,do we really have anything to lose?

  5. RastaMon Says:

    Dak Prescott

  6. ufcguy Says:

Dak is not even close to being a great or franchise qb.

  7. cmurda Says:

That pic looks just like Freeman. That just scared the shyte outta me. I like Jameis. I think he is a lot better QB than people even understand. The difference is I think Jameis has the intangibles to go with the athleticism.

  8. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Jameis Winston hardly ever sucks on the field. Freeman had possible off the field distractions and it showed up on Sundays.

I don’t give and EF what he does off the field. Warren Sapp was a di*k off the field.

Kaufman: “He might sell some tickets, Chris. He might sell some tickets. And you know what? There might be a lot of people out there picketing, too. You know that?”

Hmm picketing sounds a lot like petitioning to me. Where have I heard THAT before? Oh yah from myself that’s who. He might sell some tickets huh Ira? Where have I heard THAT before? Oh yah from myself. Weeks and weeks ago…

YOU people have NO idea how many fans I can get to sign this petition. Think I’m crazy huh? It’s gonna happen.

  9. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Dak is Tebow part 2. No thanks.

  10. jason77 Says:

Winston is the next Josh Freeman.

  11. Sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

Love the daily dose! Thanks joe!

  12. billy buckaroo Says:

If the rest of the roster was at least reasonably in place than Winston might have a slim chance with Lovie but I even doubt that with the off field stuff.

Winston only fills one hole on this team
Lovie has lots of holes to fill and he thinks defense first
and after this season, he is going to think defense when the draft comes around much more than he did last year.

  13. 1bucfan88 Says:

If Kaufman is correct, and the Glazers are thinking that way, then it’s just more proof they’re totally in over their heads as owners.

However, I find it more likely Kaufman is just, as a layperson might say, making $@#% up.

  14. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Never had a franchise QB in the 38 years of existence…..NOW is the chance to FINALLY be in a position to get one for once. The time is NOW!

Or They can just sit around and wait another 40 years. Maybe we’ll be in the right spot at the right time in the draft some day, but I doubt it very highly.

I’ll keep saying this because it DOES matter. After this team goes 2-14 they are going to need some serious PR to get people to even want to sniff tickets again.

Winston is that PR. Scandals or not. Winston will sell tickets. O-lineman will not. It’s financially stupid on the Glazers part not to twist Lovie’s arm and make him take a QB.

Put a big name in a movie and it sells tickets. Put Eric Roberts in a movie and no one shows up.

  15. The Buc Realist Says:

There is more than “just off the field issues” that sank freeman. There is a reason that in a brand new offense that he would look good and once some game footage will go around Freeman would get exposed! He could only learn a little bit of an offense! that is why with Freeman they kept running the same simple plays. he could never remember a full play book.

isn’t funny that in his 5th year that we heard he had adhd? or was he taken the same medication that 2 other CB’s were taking to help study and retain some of the play book!

  16. The Buc Realist Says:

    @87ForJameisOrMariota

the only problem is with Jamis is drafted and the bucs are down in a game, and Jamis starts asking this roster if they are Strong? no one will say I am strong if u strong!

  17. Nybucsfan Says:

The need to draft a QB I’m sick of watch the crap QB play year in and year out. Not fair to the fans this team needs a leader the can believe in with 2 mins left in the game. We have missed on D end I would rather take a shot on a QB than miss on another player.

  18. Hawk Says:

It seems to me, Joe, that YOU have said that the QB position is different than any other, because he touches the ball on every snap AND is responsible for ‘leading’ the team. You cannot now say there is a similarity with CB, WR, etc.
The Glazers are businessmen FIRST. If it looks like a bad move, they won’t let it happen. But we don’t know whether they view it as a ‘bad’ move or not. And they certainly are not going to show their cards. We can’t even be 100% sure that Lovie is the HC they will be talking to about the draft.

  19. MTM Says:

My problem with Winston is all the issues off the field. Now give Winston a couple million dollars and it may be like throwing jet fuel on a lit match. I would be hesitant as hell on this kid.

  20. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

For those fans that don’t even go to games or don’t even live in the bay area, you won’t see my point about ticket sales.

Bottom line : Big names sell.

Signing Revis and Goldson got me to buy my first season tickets ever last season. That’s no lie. Big names!

Off the field troubles or not. Jameis would have this town in a frenzy for the season to start. Ticket sales would be the highest they’ve been in 10 years.
The Glazers are businessmen. They LOVE money. The haters would suddenly become believers. That stadium will be packed or they can just draft Eric Roberts and hear crickets in the stands.

They need MUCH more than QB and I get that, but the time is now, because the time is right. We’ll be in that perfect spot to finally take one.

  21. Mando PLayr Says:

The Bucs are currently valued at 1.225 Billion. If I’m the owner there is no way that I make Jameis Winston the face of this franchise. Dude is extremely immature and with his past could never be trusted to stay out of trouble. We need a QB that will be available every week not one that will end up being suspended because he refuses to act like an adult. I’d stay away from him just like I would have stayed away from Clowney. Do no harm, hire no knuckleheads!

  22. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Mando PLayr…he’s currently acting like a college kid.

  23. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Maybe you guys would be more content with a quarterback that cries at the podium than one with ice in his veins.

The reason why Joe does these daily Jameis Watch articles is not just for hits to the site. It’s because he’s out there and our team needs a quarterback. This team is on a collision course to run right into him on draft day. So it is a possibility and some of you are going to have to come to grips with it if the Bucs pull the trigger on this kid on draft day.

  24. Christopher Says:

Look joe. Freeman Self destructed due to his own off the field issues. Not Greg schiano. It was freeman.

What does Winston have? Off the field issues. Heck he even has that Byron leftwich elongated release on the field that scares me. (Look at all those picks). Idk I mean Winston is talented but he scares me bc he has that potential to self destruct himself and an entire franchise. That’s a risk I’m not willing to take.

I much rather see you install the Mariota watch.

  25. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    Christopher Says:

“Idk I mean Winston is talented but he scares me bc he has that potential to self destruct himself and an entire franchise. That’s a risk I’m not willing to take.”

Why because things are so much better these days? You like how things are going now?

Why would we “risk” getting better, let’s just stay crappy, because he’s too big of risk for us to gamble on. As if we have sooooo much to lose right now.

  26. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Full control by Lovie Smith….and this is the results the Glazers get for it.

I think after all his past off-season moves and them not panning out too well. That the Glazers will have to reign him in on this coming draft.

It will go something like this. Look Lovie we’re a 2-14 team and you made a lot of offseason moves last year that didn’t work out for you. You can have control of the draft after the first round.

  27. Jonny 2.3 Says:

Its just Kaufman offering his opinion. We know the Glazers are risk takers when they see potential, and I hope they are in Lovie’s dome come draft time to draft any QB the front office has high grades on and not pass on them because of McCown and Glennon. Kaufman at least looks like an old conservative guy, the kind that will have issues with questionable character.

  28. Aceofaerospace Says:

There’s not a crab legs chance in boiling water that the bucs draft Winston. No way. Won’t happen.

  29. Please Says:

Dude 87 is on crack or something.

  30. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Jonny 2.3 …lol I’m not as old as Ira, but I’m as conservative as they come.

All of Winston’s off the field troubles have never showed up on game day. I don’t expect that to change one bit in the NFL.

Winston : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r1JV7HMCOI8 Believe in yourself.

  31. Walter White Says:

Jameis is Cam. A better on field, worse off field version of Cam. Is Cam better than either of our 2 QBs? Yeah he is, but at least you can feel pretty safe putting your money on Glennon and McCown staying out of trouble.

We need to find the right guy. Our Andrew Luck. He doesn’t have to be that good even, but we need the RIGHT guy for OUR team.

Just like we need the right coach for our team…

  32. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

“When he came on a visit here we all fell in love with him. He’s a great kid. He’s smart. He knows football. He’s got an unbelievable personality and whatever ‘it’ factor quarterbacks have, he’s got it. He’s also very self-aware. He knows what he does right and he knows what he doesn’t do right.”

“He’s also blatantly honest and open. You ask him a question and you’re going to get an answer. He’s a wonderful kid. I got to know his dad through the process. (He has a) great family. I said it at the time – I know he’s going to be successful in and out of football. He’s just one of those guys.” – Stanford Head Coach David Shaw.

He got accepted to Stanford and was real close to going out west before choosing FSU….No matter how much talent you have Stanford won’t accept you, if your an idiot.

    Boom! Pow! Lol

  34. WalkdaPlank Says:

Winston resembles Freeman in this pic at a scary level.

  35. Sick of this $hit Says:

I keep hearing, “we need to find the right qb”. from a lot of you.

Hey, here’s an idea….. go draft the best qb in college football!!!!

And that would be Winston! Is he a risk? Sure, show me a college kid that isnt a risk. But, I’ve never missed an FSU game with Winston under center and I can tell you this. Hes got guts, hes got a big arm, hes got talent, and hes got his team mates wrapped around his finger. Sure, he sounds like an idiot when he speaks, but he aint no dummy. Hes got the brains too. The dude just delivers.

  36. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Ha ha ha this is GREAT stuff right here guys. I was reading a Jets blog about which one the Jets should take Winston or Mariota.

This is the exact quote from one of the Jets fans in the blog. This is funny assed stuff right here that I’m sure you ALL will enjoy.

“Neither. Either hire the Duke coach or get the former coach of the Bucs and trade for Mike Glennon, tall QB with the Bucs.” – From a Jets fan.

Is that funny stuff or what?

  37. Mike10 Says:

    Joe,

Every year you get love drunk over a QB coming out. And every year they have question marks. Sure, every QB has them, but worse w your crushes: is their problems exists between the ears!! Come’on man!

The successful Qb’s around the league all have their heads on straight, are talented, are confident in their talent, and want nothing more than to win! It may be just a game, but to them it’s a job. Brady says he goes out every day doing the best he can because there is always someone there to replace you. We need that kind of attitude out of the most important position to pull this franchise out of the dumpster!

You got a high pick in this draft – but you better not just draft a QB because you “need it” and you hope it’ll stick against the wall. You draft him because you KNOW 110% he either has all of the tools needed to be a franchise QB or you’re confident you (the current coaching staff) can develop those tools.

Winston has incredible talent and a knack to win – when he wants to! You can’t just shut it down for a half! He’s also an idiot off the field!

I assume law / medical school or getting a job are not options directly out of college currently being mulled over by team Winston. So if plan numero 1 is NFL – what are you doing stealing, or being even associated with rape, or in the wake of those “false” accusations yelling stupid $hit about women infront of the whole school!…

You make us seriously question your player analysis Joe when you want to take a player with a top 3 pick – that many teams deem undraftable. You understand that to be one of 32 NFL QBs, you have to put them big boy pants on. That if ANDREW LUCK needs 3+ years to develop into a Superbowl QB, Mr. Winston has some serious developing to do.

You think he’s got the maturity for that Joe? You think Manziel (with half the potential) has it? How about Geno Smith, RG3, or even Newton and Kapernick – and I’d say those last 3 are much more talented than Winston, but find themselves at a serious “maturation and developmental cross roads.” The same cross-road Winston will face even if he finds success, once teams being to figure him out and scheme against him.

I’d personally rather draft a guy later, with the leadership skills we need NOW (that you can’t teach), that we can develop into a franchise guy.

Regardless of QB or not Joe,

THIS PICK IS A BUST IF THE PLAYER HE IS NOT ON THIS TEAM IN 10 YEARS!!

  38. Joe Says:

    Mike10:

The more outside pressure there is on Winston the better he performs on the field.

    Says a lot to Joe.

  39. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

    @Mike10 …Winston is oozing with leadership skills…

  40. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

I only have a few Jerseys and I was never a Bucs fan until Lovie Smith got there but if the Bucs draft Winston I will buy a Winston jersey when they become available where I’m at.

  41. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

@Joe…you HAVE to read Alan Dells take on why the Bucs should stay away from Winston.

Here’s a gist of the article. He says that what ASJ did using the ball as prop sent up a red flag for the Glazers to not want a Jameis Winston on their team. He went onto name Demar Dotson’s boneheaded personal foul late in the game as another red flag against Winston. Basically saying the Bucs don’t need anymore boneheads on there team when they already have guys like ASJ and Dotson.

No lie man. He actually wrote an article like that and linked ASJ’s ball prop as reason to not draft Winston.

How in the hell does this guy even have a job writing for a newspaper is beyond me…

  42. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

Here is how I really see the draft playing out. I know it’s early, but this is what I think will happen.

Oakland picks first…probably a DE or something along those lines.
Jacksonville picks second…probably go O-line, I don’t follow them all that much.
The NY Jets have the 3rd pick and take Mariota.
Our beloved Bucs pick 4th and take Jameis Winston.

We’ll see how close I am, but I really think Mariota is going to NY.

  43. WalkdaPlank Says:

No, Jets will win more than the Bucs with Vick.

  44. MadMax Says:

If we miss on Winston, I still like what I see in Bryce Petty….so if we miss, maybe go pass rush first, or DB, then move up to take Bryce.

  45. David Says:

It’s crazy how some of u people on here dismiss Winston because of his “baggage” but were open to signing Incognito?! It’s ok to be a racist a-hole but don’t get “accused” of touching a pure white woman, or repeat an internet meme that surfaced first from a white guy! I bet a bunch of you wish you could Emmett Till him like the good ole days huh? Geez!

  46. David Says:

@87 “@Joe…you HAVE to read Alan Dells take on why the Bucs should stay away from Winston.

  47. WalkdaPlank Says:

No need to bring race into this. ^^

  48. Mike10 Says:

    87 – oozing is strong
joe – most of that outside pressure he brings on himself

  49. Mumbles Says:

    Draft Jameis!

  50. Mcruzer Says:

Freeman who we over reached for at the 17th pick (graded out at 2nd or 3rd round talent) and then was paraded to the podium as our face of the franchise should not be compared with Jameis Winston. This is our chance for a top tier real franchise QB. The Glazers will pull the trigger. Even they realize they took A scrub and sold the fans a bag of crap.

  51. Patrick in VA Says:

So, I’m assuming that you all are banging the drum for Winston because you think that he’s going to be a great fit for the offense that we run here. Just wondering what offense that’s going to be next year since not one of us has a clue what that offense is going to be. He might be talented but I truly doubt that he is such a transcendent talent that he would flourish in whatever system you put him in to. Before you guys lose much sleep over wanting to get this guy, let’s see who our OC is going to be and see if he’s a fit.

  52. phil Says:

We need to do everything possible to get Jameis Winston on our team. Him throwing passes to Evans, VJ, & ASJ we will be scoring so many points like this franchise has never seen before. We will go from having the worst quarterback in our division to having the best. Not drafting this guy would be the biggest mistake we have ever made. We didn’t draft Johnny Football last year and this team has no leader and there is nothing on this team that gives someone hope that things will improve. You look at Jacksonville & Oakland and both of those teams have hope because they drafted quarterbacks that they believe will take them where they want to go. Right now we have no hope other than hoping the Glazers can Lovie.

  53. buc4lyfe Says:

That’s just stupid….. From all accounts of what I heard schiano was the only one that wanted Freeman gone, who cuts a starting quarterback with that kind of salary except the bucs. All franchises miss on quarterbacks over the years before they hit, were talking top 5 not 17th in the draft. Glazers won’t tell lovie how to run this franchise and there no other option with a top pick if you have no quarterback, that’s why you have scouts and a general manager…… Damn joe why do you even waste your time posting his rants because he clearly sounds like he knows nothing

  54. mike Says:

    LOVIE+WINSTON=5 more years of bullsh*t!

  55. mike Says:

@87 ya sell some more tickets for the glazers that’s all that matters to them! just so u can get them to draft your boy friend.

  56. mike Says:

even if they make lovie draft a QB we will not see him play cuz lovie needs to win games next year or he is gone I hope!!!!!!!!

  57. Gua Says:

I think what he means is they won’t take a qb with questionable off field issues. It was the off field issues that killed Freeman(along with on the field play). The Glazers see this and may want a talented qb without any of the off the field mess. This spells Marriota. I wouldn’t mind that pick at all

  58. mike Says:

WINSTON A LEADER!!!!!!! ARE U KIDDING ME PAL! @87 U HAVE ISSUES DUDE. IF U THINK THIS KID!! IS A LEADER. PLEASE. if you are such a great QB scout why don’t u get a job with the bucs so u can screw them over like lovie is!

  59. mike Says:

Winston 11 td 7 ints. enough said. ya he is great!!!!

  60. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Jameis is 100 times the QB Freeman ever was. Freeman was a soccer player that happened to be huge and have a big arm. No heart at all.

Winston has the arm, the accuracy, the on-field leadership, the ability to run a pro system and go through ALL of his progressions. His teammates LOVE the guy, and play hard for him. If you think he’s a one read QB, you have NEVER watched him play.

  61. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    @Mike

He has 57 tds 21 ints in 2 years. Yes, he is great.

  62. mike Says:

    k that’s college! enough said.

  63. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Pretty sure all NFL QBs come from college. But, ok.

  64. BoJim Says:

Joe would like to see some excitement on the field for once. . Can’t say I blame him.

  65. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Mariota and then Winston. Of course someone could trade up to take the Raiders spot to grab Mariota.

  66. Barry Says:

Freeman’s standing in line and he’s looks like he’s running the hurry up offense. He’s looking over the steaks, but no he’s calling an audible….. He rolls to the right and heads directly to the Seafood isle and grabs 10lbs of Crab Legs and sticks them down his drawls. I tell you this kid can move. I think he going to make it folks, yes I think he’s going to score. OH No!!! , looks like the police are blowing this play dead. Too bad, this kid was really high stepping it..

    Please no Winston.

  67. 87ForJameisOrMariota Says:

The undefeated Jameis Winston or the defeated Marcus Mariota.

@Love and Warrick Dunn…I also add that if anyone thinks this kid has no leadership skills at all. Then they have never watched him play. They’ve never seen him on the sidelines firing up his team both offensive and defensive players. They’ve never seen him at the front of a tunnel. As the all the FSU players are coming out onto the field Jameis just stands there and low fives every player that runs out of the tunnel. When everyone is out of the tunnel, Jameis is the last one out.

They’ve never heard him say “this trophy is not about me, it’s about FSU” after winning the Heisman.

  68. Zam Says:

It’s exactly what he said, they don’t want someone with off-field issues, and it’s crazy to draft someone who has those out of the gate.

His talent is fantastic. Except when he’s point-shaving. Just kidding. But not really.

  69. OMG I MISS SCHIANO Says:

Physically, Winston is basically a clone of JFree. Yes, he’s had more success in college at a higher-profile school; but he’s too similar overall for me to be interested… Anyway, Marriota is the gem of this draft.

  70. 87 is right! Says:

I also watch the Noles and will say this. Everything 87 has said is so true. We have got to take Winston. He is a winner. This team needs a winner. Jameis still wins even when the whole country tries to pull him down with useless alegations. My grandfather coached at FSU in the old days and he would take the winner if he was still alive. I travel from the other coast for crap every game, I feel defeated as I walk into the stadium. I need a winner who has heart and passion for the game. I need Winston. The BUCS need Winston!

  71. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

    “OMG I MISS SCHIANO Says:

Physically, Winston is basically a clone of JFree.”

No. No, he is not. Besides skin color, what are the similarities specifically?

A 6’4″ QB? There’s a million of those. Some great, some not. Zero similarity between the two.

If you want to compare him to someone physically and stylistically, it’s Big Ben. Both are big guys, hard to bring down, able to move around enough to extend plays, good accuracy, always looking downfield, even when scrambling, etc.
