Bucs Outscored 123-27 In First Halves

Last year, Mike Sullivan couldn't figure out adjustments. This year, Marcus Arroyo and company aren't sufficiently prepared.

Last year, Mike Sullivan couldn’t figure out adjustments. This year, Marcus Arroyo and company aren’t sufficiently prepared.

Last year, the Bucs delivered fans and Team Glazer a deeply troubling impotence score of 83 in the second halves of games. Yes, that’s how many points the Bucs scored all season in the second half, an average of 5.2 points over the final 30 minutes of games.

So for those of you yearning for Greg Schiano this morning, please seek medical attention immediately.

Astoundingly, the Bucs are worse in first halves this season than they were in second halves last year.

As noted this morning by pedestrian-bumpingolive oil-lappingpopcorn-munchingcoffee-slurpingfried-chicken-eatingoatmeal-lovingcircle-jerkingbeer-chuggingcricket-watchingscone-loathingcollege football-naïvebaseball box score-readingNPR-listeningfilthy-hotel-stayingfight-instigatingbarista-training Peter King, of Sports Illustrated and NBC Sports fame, the Bucs have been outscored in the first half 123-27 this season. That’s 4 1/2 points.

This is a sign of dreadful coaching. The Bucs offense is not prepared in the first half. Sure, you could make the case they stink, but if they really stunk out loud, then they wouldn’t be scoring points in droves in the second half.

The Bucs are averaging nearly 16 points scored in the second half.

Joe’s confident we’re feeling the loss of Jeff Tedford here, or at least the ghost of Mike Sullivan.

How do you write an article where it talks about the team being outscore by almost 100 points in 6 games in the first half and have no mention of the defense? Offense could be better for sure, but even if it’s three times as good scoring wise, that has them outscored by 60 points (i.e. an average of 10 points) in the first half so far. Just underscores that this might be the worst Bucs defense ever.

  2. SteveK Says:

Glennon was sacked or put under pressure on 26 of his 49 dropbacks, or 63 percent. That’s the highest pressure percentage of any quarterback with 40 drop backs in the last five years. Glennon completed just 6 of 21 passes when he was under pressure. When he wasn’t pressured, Glennon completed 18 of 23.

  3. RastaMon Says:

Send Lovie back to the basement

  4. Bucamania Says:

The second half scoring is a mirage. The game is already over by then and the other team is playing a prevent defense. Marcus of Arroyo is obviously clueless and the Bucs haven’t given him any help.

  5. theodore Says:

@SteveK – So the answer is to keep the QB that can’t handle pressure?

  6. nate Says:

This team sux from ownership, to coaching, to most people on the team, and even the stadium is outdated now…im seriously thinking about jumping shift and becoming a jaguars fan.. I went to ucf and bortles is the real deal…there owner is a cool dude, the stadium is nice, you can tail gate under a bridge with shade, and I see a real direction in there team and coaching…

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Here’s a theory:

The Buc offense practices against our defense all week….when we get ih a game….it takes a half for our offense to adjust to real defenses.

  8. Dean Says:

Let’s look at the closest team to the TB Bucs. The Dallas Cowboys. Last year, same defensive system and they stunk. This year, new coach heading it up in Marinelli and they are gangbusters. Less talent than the Bucs, but are playing the system like it should be played. On offense, give Jerry Jones credit, he built a great offensive line, has a tremendous runner and an exciting QB. All that means is the priorities were some time in coming, but they were met, unlike the Bucs. Everyone says you start up front on offense and defense. That’s where we fail miserably. And the lack of quality coaching doesn’t help.

  9. Arealbucsfan Says:

Did u guys hear Lovie say the Tampa 2 isnt going anywhere? Wtf!?!?

    Anyone wanna continue
Whining about all the stunts schiano ran? Glad we all get to see the game plan Gerald insisted on last year. He clearly knew what this team needed. Say what you want schiano had a defense crafted for the players on this team. Mason foster looked like a pro bowler, now he looks lost. Labonte was in the backfield every play, now he is driven backwards. And schainos defense got take aways. The Tampa 2 is obsolete and should only be used situationally. It doesn’t work anymore.

  12. SteveK Says:

    Theodore,

No QB would thrive under our current team’s conditions. O-Line, D-Line, invisible Doug Martin.

So if you think a QB could do better than Glennon is doing with this lifeless group, then who ?

  13. bucrightoff Says:

Once again and this will be repeated to anyone who says so, the Cowboys are not running pure Tampa 2. Marinelli has adapted and they are playing more than 50% of their snaps in straight man. I would love to see Lovie adapt like that but he’s not going to and has already said he won’t. Get used to a soft zone getting lit up until Lovie gets fired. He’s too stubborn to change since hes convince himself he’s right and its everyone else who is wrong, the Tampa 2 can work as a full time defense (if you have an offense that can score 50 points a game that is)

  14. Another J Says:

Too bad the Bucs don’t have an NFL Caliber Offensive Coordinator…

  15. Brent Says:

I didn’t like schiano either joe but team was better with him. If I owned the team Gruden would still be here. As for schiano, I wouldnt have fired him for this. Thisis medias screwup mostly (lovie’s great schiano awful bs). Total reactionary nonsense! Schiano took a 4-12 mess and made it 7-9. The following year we went 4-12 but had leads late and 4 of those losses. That means we weren’t that far from 7-8 wins. Under Schiano, our d was 15th overall and considered a solid young unit by pundits! Enter Lovie, owners spend a ton in free agency give him control of personnel decisions and we change defensive schemes and our offensive line. we been out scored by 84 points in our 4 losses. That’s 3 touchdowns per game!!! Which means were not even close. Lovie got rid of our o-line. What are results of locked work: defense goes from 15th to 32nd and o-line in you words joe is awful! My point is you media guys freaked on schiano cause he was over the top and brought this guy in and were worse!! Now I don’t pretend to be a football expert like most but as joe pointed out before “this guy can’t make adjustments” thus far anyway and I fear he is using and older defensive style exclusively that the rest of the league has moved away from. I hope Lovie can make adjustments and bring in the right coaches and personnel to adjust! If not, this was a horrible hire!

  16. HawaiianBuc Says:

I don’t feel good about any of the 3 phases of our football team. In fact, I feel terrible about all three. The defense doesn’t help the offense, and the offense doesn’t help the defense. Neither is even in the same neighborhood as average. How do you win like that?

We are AT LEAST 5 guys away on offense (5 linemen). Although I like Glennon and think he can be a good NFL QB, he’s not good enough to make a bad football team into a good football team. He’s not brees or brady. V-Jax is in the wrong system. He’s not a slot receiver, no matter how much the last 2 coaching staffs want him to be. He’s not getting any younger either. I have no idea how good our RB’s are, because their biggest challenge is beating the D-linemen to take the handoff. Topping it all off, Arroyo makes Mike Sullivan look like Sean Payton. This is the worst play calling I’ve ever seen. I don’t give 2 sh!ts about us scoring a few points in the second half when we are in desperation mode. There is no rhythm to the offense, nor is there any deception. We all know what is coming, I’m pretty sure the professionals on the other teams do too. It’s not his fault because he’s not the OC, but he is not a NFL play caller. He simply can’t do it, and he shouldn’t.

  17. Brent Says:

    @bucrightoff & @dean – bingo, right on!!!!

  18. Paul Says:

I’m suprised that marcus arroryo didn’t think about blitzing when it came to the Ravens defense. I guess he doesn’t gameplan off of specific defenses.

  19. nate_tweetz Says:

Like others have said. the 2nd half output of points this season is a complete illusion. When you play teams in soft prevent defense the whole second half your numbers are going to reflect that.

The defense is more of a problem than the offense. These guys are playing zone but do not leave their zone at all. It’s like they’re all playing in their own individual playpens. They’ll have a WR run through their zone, they run with them for a second or two and them release them to no one. Just a gapping hole! All of the WR’s have a free release off of the line. Our DB’s are already 5+ yards back so they can’t lay a hand on these guys. Then, they’re too busy staring at the QB and letting guys run free in their zones.

Yes, the Tampa 2 can work when you have 2 hall of famers (Sapp & Brooks)and possibly 2 more (Barber & Lynch) running a defense with studs like Simeon Rice. WE DON”T HAVE THAT! Really, no one does. Adjust Lovie!!!

  20. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Our offensive line and almost our whole defense are untalented, undisciplined and unmotivated. This roster needs another two years’ worth of overhaul before even realistically being a .500 team. Oh, and by the way, we should’ve kept Penn, Zuttah, Joseph and Revis.

  21. Buccfan37 Says:

Welcome back Soggy, I was wondering where your comments and pics went, ya!

  22. Brent Says:

How about medical attention for people who thought this was going to be a top 10 defense under Lovie. When in reality it’s the worst defense in the league by a mile and the laughingstock of a nation. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Preach ol sage ones!!!!

  23. Architek Says:

Would you numbskulls please stop with the Schiano speak – HEs gone and I promise he is not coming back nor should he.

Dammit some of you guys are retarded – geez!!!

  24. Brent Says:

Again u fail to get a point. I guess that’s just poor reading comprehension skill. No one liked schiano!!!!!!!!!!! Is that clear? Here’s the point again. You don’t fire a guy and overhaul personnel to get worse!! Based on media not knowing sh&t..

  25. bucrightoff Says:

Indeed, its not about liking or wanting Schiano back, it’s admitting Lovie was a terrible hire to replace him. Lovie was safe the easiest sell to the fanbase. Most people ate it up and immediately assumed glory days were here again. But Lovie is committed to building a team that can compete in the 2007 version of the NFL. The longer he stays the more damage he’ll likely do unless he has a revelation and changes his approach.

  26. Brooks Says:

where the hell is tedford at ???? Not that it would’ve mattered he doesn’t tackle. But seriously. Sitting in the stands yesterday before it was totally out of hand the play calls were obvious

  27. Buc1987 Says:

I saw a fan on another thread saying he wishes the team would go back to the old uniforms. He posted it around 6 in the morning, so I didn’t reply.

It got me thinking though. The old uniforms are from the glory years. This team does not deserve to wear the old uniforms. In my opinion, it would be disrespectful to put those jersey’s on.

If they want to play like crap, let them look like crap too.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Brooks…Tedford is not coming back this season. It’s been confirmed.

  29. ChanEpic Says:

It’s like Arroyo has never heard of “misdirection” as a concept. The Ravens were rushing in a straight line right up the middle and we didn’t do much to use their speed against them. Can we get a double reverse or something up in this piece?!?!?

  30. BlakeJohnson Says:

Hey Joe, I’ll give you an excellent reason as to why the offense is sputtering. Marcus Arroyo is not taking advantage of the situations presented to him by the defense. Like in the first half yesterday, John Harbaugh threw the kitchen sink at us. And in my opinion, the best way to capitalize against blitzes, is to incorporate slip screens, bubble sceens, Hb Wheel routes, as well as short slanting and crossing routes. We didn’t do any of that, but instead, called a lot of 5/7 step drops, and plays from the gun, with routes that seemed to take a while to develop (I figured that was the reason Glennon was holding on to the rock for so long) and as you know that led to him being pressured, hit, and sacked all damn day. Stifling the offense. So what the hell, where’s the screen game?

  31. Phillip Says:

So what you are telling me is that we need Schiano’s dumb@$$ for the first half and Lovie’s dumb@$$ for the second half and we MIGHT get some resemblance of an offense? Who’s defense do we take? Is neither an option?

  32. ChanEpic Says:

@BlakeJohnson: They tried screens, the team didn’t execute them.

  33. Seattle Buc Says:

    They just suck

  34. buc4lyfe Says:

How dare you place any blame on an NFL quarterback in charge of putting points on the board….. So what no one on offense has the ball in their hands more than him

  35. buctebow Says:

Well at least the Bucs broke a record yesterday…

  36. ItsDookie87 Says:

I love how people bring up Brees and Brady like they alone can make a team great. I’m not saying they aren’t great because they are but they need the pieces around them to be great. They’re considered great because at one time or another they’ve had the parts around them. Look at Brees carrying his team this year or the year they lost Payton. Brady has one of the best coaches ever (and insider knowledge) but needs a complete team to win a championship. People were questioning if he was done in this league this year because he doesn’t have the pieces. Manning is one of, if not the greatest, QB ever to play the game and he only has one Lombardi trophy to his name because he can’t do it all.

People always bring up Manning’s rookie season when talking about Glennon but always have to throw out that they are in no way saying Glennon is the next Manning because they know they’ll get blasted. Manning had skill but everything fell into place for Manning to become Manning. The scheme, time, coaching, everything. 25+ interceptions is a ton for a rookie and if a Manning was a 3rd rounder the colts would have been looking for the next guy. Instead he was a #1 overall so people were excited for their 56% completion, 233 yards a game 26 TD 28 int rookie. Bree’s was so good to start that his team let him walk away after his rookie contract and that was with the best running back in the NFL at the time, LT, and a top defense. Sure, he was hurt but if he was that good the chargers would have kept him. What these players got was numerous years to become who we know today.

I’m just of the mind that coaching is the biggest game changer in the game. The eagles were not great and Foles was not supposed to be anything great but Chip has changed that team into a contender. The niners had so much talent that was going to waste until Jim got there and the Saints were sheer garbage until Payton walked through that door. Glennon could be anyone of those guys with the right coaching and time to develop. I just think with this coaching staff we would ruin any offensive talent we get. Maybe a new OC would change that unless lovies fingersprints remain all over the offense.
