No. 55 bleeds pewter and red, and he’s more connected to the Buccaneers’ organization this year than he’s been in any season since he was rudely cut in 2009.
Last week, Derrick Brooks was proud to explain why he thought the Bucs’ defense was nearing success. This afternoon, he was rendered speechless.
Brooks took to Twitter to explain.

Thankfully, Joe’s at no loss for words. “Embarrassing, shameful, and inexcusable” come to mind. So does the phrase, “giving up the booty like a South Tampa groupie.”
Joe’s very eager to hear Brooks talk Bucs on Wednesday at 4 p.m. with the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620. As always, it will be enlightening.
There is widespread disbelief and anger among Bucs fans, who can’t fathom the fact that defensive gurus Lovie Smith and Lovie Smith are captaining a talented but putrid defense that is actually worse than the New Schiano Order edition.

Verner has been ok, the other signings and the Mankins trade are not looking good at all right now. But for this team to be so much worse on defense is either coaching or scheme. I hope Brooks actually calls Lovie out finally but he seems hesitant to do so.

Gosh man, just want to break something. look, there has been a losing culture here for about the last three years, and I think some of that is still festering a little bit. I saw a team today that just didn’t have much life in it to start the game, on both sides of the ball. Maybe some more players need to go in order for that culture to change? idk. But I still think Lovie will get this team on the right track eventually. And for all you “fire Lovie now!” fans, save it. No way he gets fired after one season.

It takes time guys. Lovie is a defensive guru. Lovie has always been successful. It’s clayborns, Barron’s, goldsons, banks and David’s fault. Obviously we have a lack of talent bc Lovie is the greatest def coach of all time but it takes time. Be patient. We’ll go back to work this week and after the bye you’ll see. We’ll get 1 sack, a tipped ball, we’ll only give up 150y rushing and only 300 passing and only give up 36 points to bridewater and Asiata.

In today’s Tribune pre game The Vibe Roy Cummings says he knew Lovie knew this team would go through some growing pains, but Lovie said on Friday he thinks the difficult adjustment period is just about over. Just about, how long is that?

Brooks is pure class. Even if he feels it, he won’t badmouth Lovie or anyone else for that matter.
He wants to lead this franchise one day and I think he can do it. Nothing is to be gained by saying something negative.
As for Lovie being 1 & done? Of course he can be. Paying him 5 million a year to stay away is nothing in a business like this.
Consider the lost income on concessions alone today and the rest of the home dates. if this continues and Lovie stays, season ticket renewals will plummet. The first 2500 season tickets are retained because of a new coach (hope) equals the 5 million you pay Lovie

I think we have to draft a QB with our first pick next year. First of all, in no way is this loss on Glennon. He isn’t a bad QB. In fact, he’s pretty good. However, he’s not great. I don’t think he has the ability to be great. Again, that’s not a knock on him, very few are great. But we have so many holes on our team that the only way we are going to win is with a great QB. Good isn’t going to cut it. It doesn’t matter if we got the next JJ Watt, our defense is still going to be bad. It doesn’t matter if we draft the next Joe Thomas, our offense is still going to struggle. We are just too far away. The only way we have a chance is to have a dynamic QB that carries us to victories. Obviously there’s no guarantee that we will draft one, but that’s our only chance. It’s not fair to Glennon, but it is what it is.

I don’t know if it’s tanking, but something is wrong. Very wrong. Not even the worst NFL team should be down 38-0 in the second quarter. 1-AA college teams play big time D-1 teams closer than that. There’s just not that big of a talent difference in the NFL, or at least there shouldn’t be. Even coaching can’t be that bad. Even if Lovie is a terrible coach, he shouldn’t go down 38-0 in the second! I can’t believe the players have quit already, but what the hell else could it be? We were more healthy today than we have been pretty much all year. We’ve looked pretty good the last 2 weeks (relatively speaking). We had the hot weather. We needed to win this game. We were still in the division race somehow. But we laid a complete egg today. Disgraceful.

I’m as big of a homer as there is. I hate hearing the same people complain about the team week in and week out. I argue with them week in and week out. But guess what, as of October 12, 2014, they are right and I am wrong. This team deserves every criticism it gets. The coaches deserve every criticism they get. They are playing bad, they are coaching bad. There’s no positive spin. Maybe it will get better, but I’ve been saying that for a solid 6 years now. It doesn’t even look like we are close.

Tanking? Not a chance, the league would lose all credibility if they allowed it – and that’s not something you can keep quiet.
I think its more like the players have no faith in the coaching, game planning, etc. – so at the first sign of trouble, they quit.
That would explain the complete lack of effort. And the post game comments that they were unprepared.

Winston or mariotta and then O-line rest of picks. Fire Frazier and hire rex Ryan as def coordinator next year. There’s a guy who can adjust on fly and play multiple defensive schemes. As my name suggests, I’ve been here from the beginning, and I can tell you that while the level of stench today does not compare to the 1976 team, and the 1977 offense (even that year you could see the D becoming elite) this group is really, really, bad. The two losses to Atlanta and Baltimore were as awful as I can remember. Honestly, if the Ravens had kept their foot on the gas, like some colleges do when they play inferior lower division teams, they would’ve scored 80 and given up zip.
It’s really a bizarre situation. If the Boys won’t sell, then they need to hire a real football CEO/President type to restructure this thing, top to bottom. But they should NOT be involved in that process. Rather, they need to retain a major firm with executive search experience to manage it. That is exactly what the NFL did in hiring Goodell. Otherwise, we are looking at another Culverhouse-like era of futility. I’m too old to go through that again.

The defense played horribly, the O-line couldn’t block, the receivers couldn’t catch, and the running backs couldn’t run because they were distracted by his resemblance to Napoleon Dynamite. This is loss is 100% on that kid.

Glennon was the best player on the offensive side of the ball today. If Mr. Duemig blames Glennon for any of this then he clearly has an unhealthy agenda.

This offense line blocking scheme for both run and pass was about as poor as I have seen for many a year.
Aside from the fact it doesnt work, it is never changed.
We need help all over the place so what do we draft?
Two offense lineman who sit on the bench.

I agree with Hawaiian Buc, SOMEONE needs to go in order to get players attention that if you will not / can not do the job walk the plank. BUT what if that someone is Smith or Frazier? I am leaning towards Frazier.

Guys, it’s not the scheme. I really wish it was, because that would be a much simpler fix. We’ve had like 5 different schemes in the last 6 years, and none have worked. We could put 13 guys on the field, and we still wouldn’t be able to stop anyone. That’s not a joke. We aren’t even close. We have one guy that can rush the passer, but he’s a DT. We have no ends. We have one LB that can play. We have one (allegedly) good CB, who is getting destroyed week in and week out. We don’t have a safety on the roster that has any coverage skills whatsoever. You go ahead and find me a scheme that works with no pass rushers, weak LB’s, poor CB’s, and terrible safeties. If it exists, that would be the perfect scheme for our team.

I thought after the Steelers-Saints game’s we had turned the corner but today it looks like we have taken ten steps backwards. The coach’s and player’s comments just don’t strike me as though they have a clue. Most of them said “Doing their job”. Well Daddy lovie needs to teach you it takes more than just doing “Your” job to be successful. I don’t think they want it, I don’t think they are hungry. I watched the Cowboys-Seahawks game and the Cowboys look like a hungry team right now. We need something, a whole lot of something to right this ship.

The funniest thing of all… Mike Glennon is proving not to be the problem… he sure isn’t Peyton Manning… but everyone used to blame him for the Bucs woes… and you just can’t do that now… it is painfully obvious that something is horribly wrong with our defense. But Mike Glennon surely is not at fault here. It is like sweet revenge on all the naysayers. Even though they still are in denial… after today’s beat down, there is no way anyone can defend this defense, period.

You absolutely cannot change coaches after one season if you are the Bucs. It doesn’t even matter if you know he’s a bad coach and you made the wrong decision. Fact is, around the league (and I’m talking about other coaches, not fans), it is going to be perceived that he got a bad team, and that he was unfairly fired. I’m not saying that would be correct, but that’s going to be the perception. Lovie is very well respected around the NFL. What sought after coach is going to want a job where we are firing coaches on an annual basis? Why do you think everyone is laughing at the notion that the Raiders think they have a shot to land Gruden? Guess what, we are the Raiders east. We’re going to get another Schiano, Raheem, etc. coaching us and we’ll be right back where we are now. We have no choice but to stick this out, if for nothing else than to appear like we have some stability and we give our coaches a fair chance. This reality sucks monkey balls, but it’s the truth.

There are top young coaches that would take this job in a heartbeat. One of the 32 head coaches in the NFL.
You clean out L&L – hire a respected man to be the GM, he will bring in a solid coach because of who he is.

You can’t fire Lovie after one season because it’s a red flag to any real legitimate candidates and also 5 years guaranteed is a lot to shell out for a herbivore of a HCS (Lovie).
There are so many things wrong with this team both literal and functional – it will be over another decade before they win again. The organization is 3rd world status and lack tradition and pride as a winning entity.
I can see that in their decisions and I also see the Glazers are not visible enough to hold the HC accountable publicly!

And no, there aren’t sought after coaches that would take this job. Sorry to break it to you. Look at it this way, there will probably be 5 jobs opening up this year (seems to be about the average each year). For sh!ts and giggles, let’s just say Tampa is #6. Do you think there are 6 great coaches available? Of course not. There may be one legit NFL coach amongst the 6. Do you think that one qualified coach would pick Tampa, where they rotate coaches for fun? Is he going to look at this roster and say to himself “that’s the team I want to take over”? If you believe that, I’d like to come over to your house so I can point at your face and laugh hysterically. That would make you a damned fool. Besides, do you really have faith in the Glazers to be able to find that one guy? Exactly what have those two done since they took over that would lead you to believe they were capable of that? I came home tonight with my head hung low. I stayed till the end even though for the first time in my life, since I’ve been a season ticket holder, I almost left at halftime. I’m in shock and was desperately dispodent on my drive home. In fact, I feel like I’ve been in a haze for the last couple of ours.
As much as I have been a proponent for optimism where negativity breeds incessantly, and is so nonproductive, I’m done. …I mean, I’m done

Do you know how hard it is to land a great coach? Apparently not, because you are having a really difficult time with the concept. Hell, Lane Kiffin will leave the University of Alabama tonight to be our head coach. You want him? I’m pretty sure Steve Spurrier is ready to leave South Carolina. Should we call him up? Remember, your ownership has no ties to the Tampa Bay area, the boys literally live 15 minutes from me in Palm Beach, the worse this team does, the fewer the fans that show up, the more they alienate the base, the easier it is to pick up and move…now say you have a franchise that is worth maybe 900million in a third rate media market, think what that same franchise would be worth in the worlds second largest media market, low estimates are around 4-5 Billion, that’s a low estimate…you do the math….oh and for all those who are selling the stadium deal they have and how by vote the stadium has to be upgraded with county funds, when your county has no funds to upgrade your stadium as per the stadium referendum, what are they going to do, nothing…

You know why the Cowboys beat the Seahawks today? Their lines were terrific. Drafting a QB means nothing if we can’t protect him, or give him a running game, or give him a defense that can get him stops. This is a very, very bad team. It needs a lot of work. Realistically the Bucs are 2 years from being a playoff team if they wanna build this right (through the draft, not free agency). And we need great line play first before we need a QB. A QB excites the fanbase but we don’t need exciting, we need what works, and that’s building from the inside out. Both line units outside GMC are terrible.

The defense?
They are better in man than cover two. Cover two is forced and the players look to be so worried about being in the right spot that they end up covering no one and cover two becomes cover zero. They are trying way too hard and not using common sense or instinct. This Cover two defense is 100% not working. You have dial up zone blitzes and corner blitzes from time to time and the Bucs don’t. Remember Ronde’s blitzes? They were legendary. Mason Foster at the Mike can not cover anyone, anybody, nobody, just pathetic. This is a Serious Coaching problem and play calling problem on both sides of the ball. Lovie needs to rethink this defense and go back to the drawing board. This isn’t the old days and teams can beat the Cover 2 all day long and twice on Sunday as evidenced today. Yes we got best twice, lit up, torched, smoked.
Now watch, the Bucs will have a good week or two of practice and look like a completely different team against the Vikings. But then it will be back to the SOS and another huge embarrassment.
I would hate to be a Glazer right now. They’ve made so many moves, trusted so many people, spent all that money and their team is still a complete joke. The Bucs are the laughing stock of the league and I’d bet my paycheck they couldn’t even beat the Jaguars right now.

At this point, I can’t really argue with you. I personally don’t think Schiano would have worked, because I know for 100% fact that those players were done with him. But I will say he would have struggled to have done much worse.

The problem with this team is they simply just don’t know how to win. You can see it in their swagger and confidence or the lack of. We may have some elite players ala McCoy and David but they have seen nothing but losing since they stepped foot into One Buc Palace. It’s really sad, and even more sad to think McCoy may just pack up and leave after this year. Should’ve paid the man when you had the chance.

Giving full control has an EXTREMELY low success rate. New England fans are tripping about Bellicheck having too much control. It’s two totally different job descriptions. It’s extremely hard to find a good coach. It’s extremely hard to find a good GM. So I guess you could say it’s extremely extremely hard to find one that can do both. Of course you’ve got to add in the fact that other teams may offer said coach full power as well. Odds are just not in our favor.

I’ve only been on since 87, hence the name. Because our team was so so so bad. I feel that it made the SB that much sweeter for me. If I had came on board in say 94 or 95 I don’t know if watching my team win the SB would’ve had been as special as it was for me.

All I see here is bitching and complaining- have you guys seen the Cowboys defense this year? Compare last years Cowboys d to this years BUCS d- my point is that it takes a lot more time to learn the d than ppl think- their d this year is killing it and with a lot less talent! Patience ppl! This season is trashed unless somehow we win the division 7-9 but even that seems far unreacheable

As my name suggests, I’ve been here from the beginning, and I can tell you that while the level of stench today does not compare to the 1976 team, and the 1977 offense (even that year you could see the D becoming elite) this group is really, really, bad. The two losses to Atlanta and Baltimore were as awful as I can remember. Honestly, if the Ravens had kept their foot on the gas, like some colleges do when they play inferior lower division teams, they would’ve scored 80 and given up zip.
It’s really a bizarre situation. If the Boys won’t sell, then they need to hire a real football CEO/President type to restructure this thing, top to bottom. But they should NOT be involved in that process. Rather, they need to retain a major firm with executive search experience to manage it. That is exactly what the NFL did in hiring Goodell. Otherwise, we are looking at another Culverhouse-like era of futility. I’m too old to go through that again.

I hate this losing. It makes me sick. But it is too soon to do anything stupid. We are six games in!!!!! Hello!!! I don’t know if there’s ever been a team that has fired a coach after six games. And you can’t fire him after one season, because we have had no continuity for far too long. Changing coaches year in and year out hasn’t worked. We really haven’t done anything right since the boys took over. The right thing to do is let Lovie build his team, and have faith that he knows what he’s doing. Harbaugh isn’t coming here. Get that out of your head. There isn’t a good alternative. This is the state we are in, due to the last two hires we’ve made. Those coaches set us back in more ways than we can count. Aside from this happening 10 more times, the right decision is to keep Lovie. It’s not even a hard decision, and I promise you it’s what is going to happen. He’s not going to get fired, we aren’t getting Harbaugh, PERIOD.

It is an indisputable fact that the absolute most important part of having a successful franchise is ownership. Our problem goes beyond coaches and players. I don’t believe the Glazers don’t care about this team, but I do believe they just don’t know what they’re doing. They’re not football people. They probably know less about football than the majority of us, and we don’t know squat. Until something changes at the top, we are going to be hard pressed to have any sustained success.

Losing costs them money…millions.
That’s why Lovie goes at end of season – he represents a drop in revenue (tickets, concessions, advertising).

Yeah I don’t like all the excuses either. Schiano laid the blame at his feet. Even when fans were whining that he never owned up to the losses, I used to defend the guy and tell them that they were lying. Because Schiano always took the blame. Not this guy though…
People should be up in arms over him not taking the blame like they were over Schiano, only Schiano DID take the blame.

This defense looks like scab players brought in the day before the game. There are basic concepts to this defense that the secondary and LBs simply are not doing. That IS a coaching problem.

Come on guys Lovie has a proven track record. not to mention a Super Bowl visit under his belt. There are several very successful teams running a system very similar to the system Tampa is attempting to run. The problem is that these guys do not get it yet and it will take a few more games for them to start to understand the keys. The lack of depth on this team will not be resolved until the 2016 draft so be patient because crying into your beer wontl change a thing. I predicted 7 and 9 before the season and believe or not I had the team going into the bye week 2 and 4(beating the rams and panthers at home). I also want you true fans of the game to recognize that McCoy is being double and triple teamed on 90 percent of the defensive plays so sack numbers are not what we should be judging him on. The other three guys are receiving the one on one blocking up front and that’s where the pressure and sacks should start. Last note guys the DBs and Safeties have been back ups since game one you cant be successful in COVER TWO with sub par second string guys playing those spots—- not to mention a slow back up MLB.
