No More Sgt. Winslow

June 22nd, 2009

winslow-and-wife1Since Kellen Winslow was acquired by the Bucs in a trade with the Browns, Joe began referring to the former Cane star as “Sgt. Winslow.”

Part of it, naturally, came from his infamous postgame outburst at Miami where he claimed he was “a soldier.” But part of the reason Joe continued with the moniker was that more and more Joe became enamoured with Winslow.

Clearly he was trying to be a leader.

Joe also heard a number of radio and TV interviews with Winslow since the trade went down and just listening to him got Joe fired up. So the moniker went from a not-so-subtle jab to a form of respect. After all, a sergeant is a leader and one who motivates his troops.

Sunday, Joe was able to take in a few minutes of Winslow’s camp for youngsters at One Buc Palace. This, too, impressed Joe even before he came out to One Buc Palace. The fact Winslow had just moved to town and was putting together a camp like this reminded Joe of all the things the Bucs legends did for the community, like Derrick Brooks and Mike Alstott and John Lynch.

Winslow and his wife, Janelle, were gracious enough to take a few brief moments to talk to Joe. There, it became quickly apparent that Winslow was familiar with Joe’s work. If he wasn’t, his wife certainly was.

When Joe was introduced to Winslow, the tight end asked who Joe worked for. When Joe answered, “JoeBucsFan.com,” Winslow quickly turned to his wife and asked, “What’s this guy been calling me again?”

“Sgt. Winslow,” she answered.

Right away Winslow barked at Joe, “You’re not going to say that no more, right?”

No less than two other times, Winslow asked, no, demanded in so many words, “No more of this sergeant stuff, OK?”

OK.

Since the Winslows were so kind to Joe Sunday and that the nickname clearly bothered Winslow, Joe agreed. No more Sgt. Winslow. Joe is so impressed with how Winslow is going about his business and how he worked with the kids (a story coming later about that) that Joe has no option but to respect Winslow’s request.

No more Sgt. Winslow.

    ok,call him Officer Carl Win-slow

  2. Cork Says:

I just typed “Sgt. Winslow” on a tiny piece of paper and buried it in the backyard and planted a flower on top. There was not a dry eye in the house.

  3. spencer096 Says:

    that’s because it’s LIEUTENANT winslow.

  4. Chris Says:

Nice back-peddaling, Joe. Regarding your statement ” the moniker went from a not-so-subtle jab to a form of respect”, what a pathetic attempt to clean the mess off your shoes when you get called out by the player face-to-face. If you make comments about players stick to them. Don’t cut and run when you get called out, and nothing you can say or write will change my opinion on your about face. At ease, Joe!

  5. Joe Says:

    Chris:

Maybe you missed the posts in recent months where Joe admitted that listening to Winslow got Joe so fired up he wanted to go out and hit people; that Winslow is saying all the right things; that Joe appreciated how Winslow was working with kids?

Hey, Winslow asked Joe not to use the nickname. He and his wife were very kind to Joe and, as previously noted, Joe has developed respect for him.

What was Joe going to do, tell Winslow to his face to go to hell? He treated Joe with respect and asked Joe to stop using the nickname. It clearly bothered him. Joe is honoring his request.

Sure, Joe doesn’t have to stop using the nickname. And Winslow didn’t have to talk to Joe nor ask (politely) to stop using the military title.

This is a win-win-win for everyone. Joe got some great stories out of it (a Winslow interview coming tomorrow), Joe’s readers got some great content and Winslow (and his wife) doesn’t have to read a nickname that he didn’t like.

Joe doesn’t see much of a problem with this result.

  6. Mike Says:

Hey Joe, good work bud. I understand where you’re coming from. Is anyone going to say it or do I have to??? LOOK AT THE ROCK ON WINSLOW’S WIFE’S HAND! Jeeeze

  7. BigMacAttack Says:

I agree with you on this one Joe. It’s time to give the couple a break as they asked. You should be gracious that his wife frequents your site, and this is the right move. The MSM would never honor a request such as theirs, and this is what makes you better. It may even guarantee you exclusive interviews in the future, if you stay true to your word. Maybe it’s time to give Josh Freeman the same respect, at least for now. I bet you a dollar you can’t get an exclusive with Rachel Watson. Ok, 10 dollars…

  8. Joe Says:

    Mike:

Thanks. Joe had not noticed Janelle’s rock. Joe has to confess there were other features that did catch his eye.

  9. Joe Says:

    >>> I bet you a dollar you can’t get an exclusive with Rachel Watson. <<<

Please, it’s still early on a Monday morning. It’s too long of a day to tease Joe.

Thanks for the kind words, as always.

  10. Flea Says:

“A form of respect” …please Joe, you can’t slip that by even those like me who love you most. …Sgt., thy name his dead

  11. Chris Says:

No, Joe, I didn’t miss the posts on previous days. I’m an avid reader of your website and my hometown’s sports scene. Let me clarify, I’m not annoyed by you removing the monniker. His “soldier” comment was completely blown out of proportion to begin with. It was an ill-timed comment that, if made during a different time, would have just been brushed off as another sports cliche. I just wanted to call you on the carpet. You make a living posting articles on this web-site calling athletes out; I just wanted to return the favor. No more; no less.

  12. Mr. Lucky Says:

Joe might I suggest the new moniker – Captain Winslow?

    1. It’s a promotion from Sgt to Captain

    2. A captain is an officer who LEADS by example and with Winslow’s involvement with the kids camp he is DEFINATELY a leader

PS – Since the lovely Mrs. Winslow reads this site I guess that means no more Janelle pics 🙁

  13. CyberDilemma Says:

Who’s kiddin’ who, Joe? We all know the real reason you agreed to drop the Sgt thing is because Winslow’s wife gives you wood. Geesh, Carmella’s only been gone a few months and you’ve already ditched her for another hottie. Can’t really say that I blame ya, though.

  14. RastaMon Says:

    This teams needs Sergeants !

  15. Mike Says:

Cyber- I was thinking the same thing. Winslow did well in the wife department!

  16. RastaMon Says:

“Cyber- I was thinking the same thing. Winslow did well in the wife department”……time will tell….like after 150 weeks after the big game day checks stop

  17. Sgt Mike Says:

Well you can still call me Sgt Mike and I won’t get mad. I earned my stripes.
    The NCO CREED
No one is more professional than I. I am a Noncommissioned Officer, a leader of soldiers. As a Noncommissioned Officer, I realize that I am a member of a time honored corps, which is known as “The Backbone of the Army”. I am proud of the Corps of Noncommissioned Officers and will at all times conduct myself so as to bring credit upon the Corps, the Military Service and my country regardless of the situation in which I find myself. I will not use my grade or position to attain pleasure, profit, or personal safety.

Competence is my watchword. My two basic responsibilities will always be uppermost in my mind — accomplishment of my mission and the welfare of my soldiers. I will strive to remain technically and tactically proficient. I am aware of my role as a Noncommissioned Officer. I will fulfill my responsibilities inherent in that role. All soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own. I will communicate consistently with my soldiers and never leave them uninformed. I will be fair and impartial when recommending both rewards and punishment.

Officers of my unit will have maximum time to accomplish their duties; they will not have to accomplish mine. I will earn their respect and confidence as well as that of my soldiers. I will be loyal to those with whom I serve; seniors, peers, and subordinates alike. I will exercise initiative by taking appropriate action in the absence of orders. I will not compromise my integrity, nor my moral courage. I will not forget, nor will I allow my comrades to forget that we are professionals, Noncommissioned Officers, leaders!
    HOOAH!!

  18. Mike Says:

Rasta- that goes for everyones marriage these days. But from what I read Winslow and his wife have been together since they were 13! If anyone’s got a good shot of staying together its them. LOL

  19. CyberDilemma Says:

Here’s a pretty funny vid with Winslow and his wife. She’s pretty hot in this… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9kWZtopmmU

  20. Matt Says:

Winslow should definitely be promoted to an officer rank, since everyone knows that NCOs work for a living, while Wins: low has a hard enough time getting the movers in the right place at the right time.

  21. corey Says:

Does “Joe” refer to himself in the third person, or is this some other person writing about someone named Joe? I’m so confused. The comment from “Joe” made me even more confused. How did I get to this site?

  22. 6 time champ Says:

I can’t believe you pussed out.

  23. Terry in San Antonio Says:

Who cares if Winslow doesn’t want to be called “Sgt. Winslow” any longer. Let’s just start calling his wife “Major Hottie”.

  24. Terry in San Antonio Says:

Take down that picture. Seriously. I can’t read the article without oggling at Winslow’s wife and MY wife is sitting close by. She will notice sooner or later because I have no intention of going to another site. For the sake of my marriage, PLEASE REMOVE THE PHOTO

  25. Terry in San Antonio Says:

She will notice sooner or later because I have no intention of going to another site. For the sake of my marriage, PLEASE REMOVE the photo or make her look ugly. Go find a Packers female fan or something. That ought to do the trick.

  26. LouieBillsFan Says:

Are you %$#@!! serious!! Please God, bless me with the talent to play football, pay me millions and let them call me Sargent! Or General or Lt. or even Luigi! Hey Sgt! Read the Constitution….it so happens it addresses something called Free Speech….ever heard about that? Respect is not dictated, it is earned. Maybe you outta try the civil way, or are you too ‘talented’ to have any manners? Try this one, “Hey Joe, can I talk to you one on one? Joe I prefer to be called X. Thanks Joe, I appreciate your support of the Bucs and my efforts to win and serve the community.” Amazing how these overpaid atheletes are catered to and have developed a sense of royal entitlement. Don’t forget who pays your bills, Sargent! And try a slice of humble pie. Sargent, your arrogance smells like low tide!

  27. Rob Says:

Sgt. Winslow. Sgt. Winslow. Sgt. Winslow.

I’ll say it as often as I want, and I wish there was a way to meet him and let him know exactly how much that soldier comment bothered not only myself, but other veterans. I’m all for letting him get on with his life, but if he thinks people will stop saying it, he’s crazy.

And he’s an overrated piece of crap.

Hey Sergeant…are you reading this today? Maybe your hot wife will be, and she’ll pass it along.

    SERGEANT WINSLOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Joe Says:

    LouieBillsFan:

To be fair, Winslow was civil with Joe. He didn’t yell but he didn’t hold back how he was irritated by the nickname. He and his wife were very kind to Joe. As Joe has written, “gracious” is the perfect word. They were gracious to Joe.

Given the fact they were so kind to Joe and that the nickname irritated him so much, and that Joe had grown to respect how Winslow is handling himself and the work he is doing for youngsters, Joe agreed to respect Winslow’s wishes.

  29. Joe Says:

    Terry in San Antonio:

Might Joe turn you on to Rachel Watson?

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

When someone makes a gracious and humble request, there is nothing wrong with granting that request, Free Speech or not. It’s called common courtesy, decency, caring, respect or just being friendly. Some people just don’t get it. It’s not about you, the fan…or you the loud mouth…or you that think someone is infringing on your Forefather Given Privileges you call rights. The term Soldier can be used as a metaphor, to soldier on for example. It is not a slap in the face to everyone who has served our Nation. It is not a racial slur. God Bless the American Soldier, but God too, Bless our Professional Athletes that have worked hard and sacrificed for years to achieve their stature. They entertain us. They make us happy. They give us reason to cheer when things are bad. They give us hope. Maybe some of you guys should try taking some of your own advice. And to Sgt Mike in Texas, nice comments. Semper Fi

  31. Mike Says:

    Well said BigMac
