Lovie Names His Top Guards Out Of The Gate

July 25th, 2014

MeredithNot much happened at tonight’s lightning-abbreviated practice, but afterwards there was plenty of action (stick with Joe for all kinds of goodies tonight and tomorrow).

Speaking to assembled media, Lovie Smith named his top guards in his starting rotation for training camp practice — for now.

(Drumroll) … Jamon Meredith at left guard and Oneil Cousins at right guard.

A little background

Oneil Cousins — Journeyman picked up this offseason. Nine starts in six NFL seasons. One former Buccaneer is horrified by his game film.

Jamon Meredith – Schiano holdover was pretty solid all through 2012 at right guard filling in for Davin Joseph. Last year? Not so good. But Meredith was one of three unrestricted free agent Buccaneers the Bucs decided to re-sign.

Joe doesn’t expect any celebrations from Bucs fans hoping for a punishing running game, or from those mourning the loss of Carl Nicks. But relax; it’s early. Really early.

    We are sooooo very screwed.

Well, at least Tedford will have a ready made excuse for the season.

Joe, what would you think about Incognito as a potential pickup?

    Joe lives in reality.

    I wouldn’t count on this.

They wrecked the offensive line for no reason should have kept zuttah at least, and it’s looking like a trade is needed badly, I always thought our offensive line was pretty solid, run game has been solid the past couple years and mg8 stayed up right in most games, now we are banking on career back ups and poor cast offs to get it done, smh I can already see our first pick in the 2015 draft, offensive line?

This is ugly…Isn’t Meredith a converted tackle also?

If Tedford confuses defenses than I am not worried. If he doesn’t than yes we are screwed. It’s all up to Tedfrod. I’m just ready to watch some football !!!!!!!!!

Any chance the Rams cut Joseph and the Bucs Resign him.

Joe- you floated the impending doom if EDS when down with injury. Would you please remind me who our backup center is? Zuttah is sorely missed. Good thing we have a superstar behind center that will shield this offense from the woeful inequities on the oline!

Oneil Cousins and Demar Dotson on the right side…Geee I wonder which side the defense will attack from…

  11. Stranger Says:

I like some the guards on our roster, but none of them is named Cousins. Someone needs to beat him for the position before the camp is done.

Right now Joe would have to guess rookie Josh Allen is the backup center. WAY early.

Rams may not keep him but Joseph’s days with the Bucs are over.

We need to trade for a guard asap! Wat if one of these guys get hurt.. are season is done…

Meredith has shown he can be a solid NFL starting guard. I’m very comfortable with him and so is Lovie, he names him almost immediately.

One of the few decisions Lovie has made that has left me scratching my head is this Oniel decision. He statistically is one of the worst guards in football when he has been on the field.

I hope to the football gods either A. He somehow has transformed into a good player B. The coaches start Kadeem or Pat instead. Or C. We trade for Boone :D

This is only the first day of Training Camp. The starting offensive line today may not be what it is when the Panthers slither into Ray Jay on opening day. Cousins was no doubt inserted into the first team role due because he’s a 7 year veteran as opposed to the other candidates being 1st or 2nd year youngsters.

Couldn’t resist modifying a very sound statement by scubog to allow other positions that we just may see a named vet starter lose to a younger guy? :-)

  19. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

This is smokescreen by Lovie to motivate the rookie guards to win the battle.
    Go Lovie! Genius! :-)

  20. Bucnnole Says:

Cousins is pure garbage. Please, if you disagree, watch his film. He is scared, I mean really scared, to hit people. He’s like a Dexter Jackson on the O Line.

  21. buc4lyfe Says:

There are far worse offensive lines in the league than what the bucs have. Let’s atleast wait until the 3rd preseason game to talk about how screwed we are. Everyone making the negative comments… Come on admit you don’t really believe it or wasn’t too believe it. Most of you follow one team, for instance is much rather be a bug fan than a Texans fan this year just compare quarterback situations, we should be thankful we got rid of Dominick when lovie got hired

At least 75% of ALL NFL offensive guards are converted tackles.
