Licht May Have A CB Steal

A better poker player than John Elway

Don’t even get Joe started on this nonsense of throwing away all-world cornerback Darrelle Revis. Joe woudln’t give a damn if he made $20 million. It’s quite possible we will never see a Bucs cornerback that good again in our lifetimes.

Joe is trying to look at the bright side of yesterday’s moves (and there will be plenty more today), and that is the Bucs nabbed stud cornerback Alterraun Verner in the free agency frenzy.

(Damn, Joe’s glad he grew up with all those Germans in southern Illinois. He only needed one stab at Verner’s name to get the spelling down.)

This just may be a steal for the Bucs. No, really. Verner’s contract contains only $14 million guaranteed. Then, even later last night, Broncos head honcho John Elway plumb lost his mind. He coughed up $26 million guaranteed to that fool Aqib Talib, a guy for some reason Bucs fans to this day still wet their pants over.

You think that is crazy money Elway threw at Talib? Consider pot is now legal in Colorado. Denver cab drivers better be packing. Fox watching the henhouse, indeed. The signing of Verner, a mere 25-years old, seems like highway robbery considering  helmet-wielding, cabbie-slugging, Adderrall-popping, coach-cussing, referee-charging, pistol-friendly, granny-hassling Talib is on the down side of a shaky career.

Got that, dawg?

Joe will be polite and try to ratchet his stomach flu-like disgust over the Revis situation, and try to focus on what a poker player Bucs general manager Jason Licht appears to be when comparing Verner’s pact with Talib’s.

ain’t that talib thing just crazy? and it was denver.

  2. WalkdaPlank Says:

Guarantee you they will find more than a couple kilos of Mary Jane in Talib’s house now that he’s in Denver lmao.

  3. BucNasty!!! Says:

All revis has to do is look at what the browns were offering and see what his market value is and redo his contract for 13mill a year and with the cap increasing I kno licht can work that out. Either that our we cut revis and he finds out his market value and he resigns for 13 mill to be apart of this historic defense we are building CHAMPIONSHIP! !!!

  4. pablo Says:

    @walkdappank
    Kilos of mary jane?????

What an idiot, Mary Jane isn’t measured in kilos, it’s ounces, grams, and pounds. You are referring to coca in you noob.

  5. Patrick in VA Says:

With Atlanta beefing up their d line, I feel like there Matt be a chance that we can put Clowney on the other side of Johnson. Not a great one but it just got better. Especially if we can get a better draft spot out of the Revis trade. That would be legit building from the front

  6. Getaclue Says:

Licht could be playing poker even better with the Revis situation,i have a feeling he has a little more up his sleeve, will have to see how it unfolds

  7. Patrick in VA Says:

@Pablo – really guy? You’re going to knock someone for not knowing the intricacies of an illegal practice? Get a life man.

  8. PRBucFan Says:

I’m crushed that we are going to get 0 for Revis…

    Epic Fail

Great Free Agency Day 1 that I am supremely happy about but Epic Fail… EPIC FAIL

  9. PRBucFan Says:

No, I think he’s knocking a guy that was knocking another guy about doing an illegal practice that he doesn’t know anything about…

    lol ;)

  10. Drew H. Says:

still can’t rush the passer. i don’t believe that michael johnson and mcdonald are the answer. i do however like that he (MJ) can play a little LB if needed…so we’ll see about that.

The draft will be interesting for sure. Looks like offense all day.

    Another thought…

Nate Burleson for the cheap as the 3rd WR?

  11. Ghost Says:

Sounds like Talib slipped Elway some adderall.

  12. Patrick in VA Says:

@drew h – I’d like to give edelman or steve Smith a shot as our third. More Edelman really

  13. WalkdaPlank Says:

Lol who cares buddy, I could measure it in liters, or better yet, LIGHT YEARS DUUUDE. ;)

  14. PRBucFan Says:

“I think we still can’t rush the passer” is what that should say lol.

That remains to be seen, I think MJ will thrive here and really prove some people wrong who think sacks are the only indication of rushing the passer.

Plus I have a feeling we still may have a player it two coming from FA to help out the D Line.

  15. WalkdaPlank Says:

Btw, 1 kilo is 1000 grams, which is A LOT of weed. Hence the joke about Talib now that he is in a weed-legal state. Didn’t you ever go to chemistry in high school? ;)

  16. Capt. Tim Says:

Verner is a great person. Hard worker, very intelligent.
Buuut, he was very nearly benched this preseason, and by all account- he struggled badly down the stretch.
He is a great 2nd corner- he is not a shutdown guy.
If added to work with Revis- I’d be ecstatic.
To replace Revis? Not even close.

Teamed with Revis- this has been decent work.
If they trade Revis- I’ll be disgusted
Cut him? I’m done with this franchise!

There were actually Sheep posting here yesterday- that were celebrating Revis’s departure. Like it’s his fault, that the Bucs are trying to back out of a contract they were overjoyed to sign- just one year ago.

And for the idiots here. PFF graded Revis out at 18.5 last year.
That means he graded out as the top CB in the league once again. Even with a bum wheel.

We signed an underachieving DE. Who, bar one year, has averaged less than 4 sacks a season
We signed a backup DT,and 2nd string TE

We have 2 backups, a sack master who had less sacks than Adrian Clayborn
2 second stringers, and a decent CB

And this is enought to sent some idiots out, to dance in the streets!
    Sheep, to be herded

And they are cheering! Cheering that we po

    Any rumblings about Peppers?

  18. Capt. Tim Says:

    Damn phone!!!

Cheering that we are about to march the best CB we’ve ever had out the gates, and lose him for nothing!!

I still don’t believe it will happen.
If it does- I’m done with this franchise.

  19. meh Says:

He’s no Revis. What a huge disappointment to start the Lovie era.

  21. Thibs5599 Says:

Was never for getting rid of Revis, however with what the Bucs have added in free agency and what they will continue to add I support it. Revis could have taken a pay cut to stay with the team the traded away a first round pick for him, could have restructured and publicly stated he wanted to remain a Buc. He has proven he is a me first guy and cares about his wallet over his team. He did not do that. We were 4-12 last year and with all these moves and no more Revis we will be a 10 win team. Well done Lovie and Licht. Well done.

  22. Thibs5599 Says:

Cap Tim…Myers is a Starter. McDonald is going to be a starter. Verner graded as number 4 CB and we will still sign Tillman who was all pro before his injury last year. Remember Michael Bennett. A guy who improved his pass rush but earned a spot on the bucs playing the run. Well Michael Johnson’s pass rush hasn’t been consistent but his run defense has. He is younger than Bennett and had more upside. Relax and give the team a chance. We Were 4-12 last year where was revis then? I am all for keeping Revis but no other team will pay him 16 million why on earth should the Bucs.

  23. Maze Says:

Got that Dawg? LMAO… now that is some funny stuff Joe. Can barely wait to see what’s under the tree this morning!

  24. WalkdaPlank Says:

Verner is no Revis, but considering he had more picks than Revis and made the Pro Bowl through performance not popularity AND the Bucs don’t have to pay him 16mil a year I’d say it was the best signing so far. They even got him for less than Brent Grimes and Sam Shields were paid. Now if only him and Revis could play on the same team…..oh wait…..

  25. Buc Neckid Says:

What is our cap space like now?
    Peppers was cut last night,
McCown and Tillman are coming in town today,
And with all of these other signings, where do we stand right now?
We had loads of space so I am evolving towards the thinking of “if there are no trade partners today for Revis, keep him”.
Have you seen the annual salaries for the free agent CB’s this year?
They are all around the $8-10 million range.
So Revis’ $16 million is not looking so obscene anymore.
If there is Cap Space, keep him this year and trade him next if he is not in our future plans.
Imagine a secondary with Revis, Verner, Tillman, Goldson and Barron.
I still think that that “Cutting him loose” rumor was floated by either his agent or another team trying to manipulate the situation and won’t believe it until then.
But it would not surprise me if the new regime flushes the old regimes assets regardless of the perceived loss to put their new plan in action.

  26. meh Says:

Revis was recovering from a bum knee early. By the end of the year he looked like old Revis. Verner is not half the corner Revis is. We are letting the best corner in the NFL walk after giving up multiple picks including a high first rounder. Furthermore, we’re doing it after he proved his knee is good again.

Its a huge disappointment, and an epic failure. This is a huge red flag right out of the gate for Licht/Smith.

  27. Patrick in VA Says:

Lovie knows what his defense is and he knows how it works best. If he doesn’t see the value there in keeping Revis then he’s gotta go so we can get the guys that work. Revis is the best at what he does but we don’t place the kind of premium on his position that would warrant that contract. It makes sense. I’m going to let the guy who put together a perpetually solid defensive team and brought a team to a super bowl on the back of his defense at least finish pouring the team together before questions start. Doubting his coaching because he can’t work his plan around Revis is silly. He doesn’t value him at that price. He could absolutely find a way to make him work and work well, but Lovie wants to focus elsewhere and is more interested in what can be garnered through a trade or simply by freeing up the money. Revis’ greatness got us 4-12 last year. That’s not entirely fair but neither are the criticisms lobbed at other members on the team when blaming them for the team’s poor performance. Revis is the only one making a mil per game so he gets the most blame for the losses as the most valued player. When you demand that sort of a salary you’re saying that you’re good enough for a team to allocate that money to you forgoing the signing of other players because you can bring the wins yourself. Didn’t happen

  28. Jeremy Says:

I’m seriously thinking about buying a billboard that says SAVE REVIS!!!

  29. That Guy Says:

“Joe woudln’t give a damn if he made $20 million.”

And this is why some people run the business side of football and others are better suited to popping boners in their sweatpants over players.

  30. biff barker Says:

Let’s break out the shovels late this afternoon and start digging the hole to bury the Revis experiment.
Licht has been put in a near impossible situation to seek a trade and Revis’ salary will cripple this team. Deal with it.
The more roster changes the better IMO. Massive change is in order even if we are swapping talent in some cases. At least the new faces were sought out to fit the system. This needs to be the new regime’s team and not Dom’s folly.
We were a 4-12 team last year for a reason. Holding on to the past is like swimming with an anchor.

  31. Patrick in VA Says:

Instead of working with the team to try to come to a compromise he’s talking about reuniting with the jets. He could still be the best paid player at his position in the league but give the team some wiggle room by taking a cut or restructuring but he’d rather keep us hamstrung to his absurd contract. No, we’re not strapped for cap space but I’d like to bring in quality role players and backups so the inevitable injury that happens didn’t leave us dead in the water. I don’t want to see a Leonard Johnson or a Daniel Teo Nesheim on the field for Tampa again. We need to get lots of talent that can pay well together in the scheme and find our stars in the draft, not on the market at an outrageous price

  32. SAMCRO Says:

Joe is starstruck. Verner will prove to be better than the now over-paid Revis. If you don’t think he’s over-paid, then tell me Joe, why aren’t other teams jumping at the opportunity to trade for him?

    I agree with That Guy.

  33. nate_tweetz Says:

If Revis is worth what were paying him…why aren’t ANY of the teams that have cap space lining up to get him??? Because he is NOT worth the money! It’s really that simple.

  34. Buc Neckid Says:

    It’s called Bluffing

  35. Mark Says:

Talib goes to Denver ( smoking ) that mean Pats are looking for CB help….Revis.
Not that Pats will trade, but I wonder what NYJ are thinking right now.

Would they want Revis back just to keep him away from Pats. Think about it.

  36. Bird Says:

Hey captain idiot. Please give up on this franchise. We don t need u. Revis being let go was tough and still feel bad about it but to get a the number 1 rated db in free agency and pro bowler for 6 mil instead of revis 16 mil so they can get some more assets was amazing by licht. We are starting to get something we haven t had in 10 yrs- Depth. I hate all these Debbie downer buc fans. Get a clue. Excited for bucs and all these new signings . We ll see how qb situation shakes out but I hope they get qb next year when the class is better and most teams will have or have selected their hopeful franchise qb over last few yrs. heck u could get top rated qb outside of top ten

    Kilos of mary jane?????

“What an idiot, Mary Jane isn’t measured in kilos, it’s ounces, grams, and pounds. You are referring to coca in you noob.”

Hey stupid. The rest of the world uses the metric system. We use the imperial system.
Kilos is correct in other countries. You are the perfect example of how “mary jane” kills brain cells.

  38. Eric Says:

I’m perfectly happy not seeing the “greatest corner of all time” play and having no impact while we go 4-12……..

With a contract not a single other nfl team would take on to get said “greatest of all time”.

And, who is such a great team first guy and big time buccaneer supporter, refused to restructure his contract so we could get something for him or stay, and is already spouting off about his love for returning to the jets – while still a member of the Bucs.

Good riddance, greatest of all time. We hardly knew ya – thank goodness.

  39. Kramden Says:

I agree with Patrick. Well stated and logical. It’s a business. But for those against the (potential) move, the passion for the team is great to see.

  40. bucrightoff Says:

Lovie’s defense is great if this were 2005. Unfortunately its 2014 and every offensive co-ordinator under ths sun has figured out Cover 2 and all zone schemes for that matter (hint: flood the middle). Being unable to find a way to make an elite lockdown corner work is troubling no matter how you slice it. Money mattered not here, it was fit. And if Lovie can’t fit in an elite corner, forgive me but that doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

  41. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @Bucrightoff

in Lovie’s last year in Chicago ( 2012 ) the bears defense was 5th in yards and 3rd overall in points allowed. And he did not have Revis. So what ever defense he runs it seemed to be working. thx for playing though, now go back to the end of the line!

Fix this mess Lovie, and Be a Legend!!!!

  42. bucrightoff Says:

Lovie also has a 33% playoff appearance mark coaching in one of the worst divisions in football. And now he’s in the second most difficullt. So yay?

  43. Vincente Says:

    1. Last years free agency signings don’t matter anymore. New ppl are in charge and they don’t like the way things are do they are changing it. I like that they want to save 16 million. Ducks raft it’s Revis but just wait something big will happen. These guys are not stupid they know Revis is a once in a decade kind of player.
    2. This draft is extremely deep. We’re talking starters all the way into the brgginjng of the third round. That’s NEVER happened. Just let thecftontboffice do their job and us as fans just need to support the team. This whole “cut revis and I’m done with this franchise” is bull crap, those fans who are saying that can get the hell outta here and make room for us REAL fans.

  44. Bucsfanman Says:

What’s with the Lovie hate?! I don’t know how to feel about the Revis debacle either but let’s get for real people. Clearly, there is a plan here.
And for the love of Monte Kiffin stop with the Cover 2 argument already. NOBODY runs a true Cover 2 anymore. It’s called adapting!
Go Bucs! Welcome fellas! Now go kick some a$$!

  45. Uncle Deadly Says:

Joe doesn’t like links that take away from his site, but his lack of info of even what team Alterraun Verner played for is forcing me away. Just saying: less commentary and bad jokes and more actual info.

Nice attitude. Scroll down a bit and read about Verner’s history in Tennessee. Or hear his audio from last night. –Joe

  46. P'cola Buc Says:

Before I state what I’m about to say I must interject here that I totally love the quality of play of one said Mr. Revis. My gut however has felt that he really never had or has a real connection to this team or the city. He was here purely for the bucks. He was a man for hire. I never sensed that he was excited about being here. No real connection. Even talks about utilizing his strengths this year would include dividing up the defense and field at times, he would play man on man and the rest of the team would play zone. Perhaps it would be best for the team to feel like a true team and those newly acquired would be excited about playing on the same page. He is a wonderful elite athlete, but was it really the best fit for the team or (not considering the money) for himself. I believe he would be happier playing for a bigger market team with more television exposure. I am excited about our free agency’s signings. Lovie is a very good coach who is attracting quality players. I trust in his judgment. Can’t wait to see who we sign today. GO BUCKS!

  47. Architek Says:

Normally balanced and seasoned guys are extremely emotional for some reason.

I keep saying this but you guys do realize this was and has been a bad team for years, right?

Also, you do realize the splash picks Dominik made have NOT lived up to their billing?

Again, I pose the question, why are you so up in arms about Revis – he didn’t translate to wins. You do want to win more games?

I’m concerned some of you long timers here are really delusional. You screamed fire Dominik and Schiano but now you’re complaining.

    This is absurd.

Please don’t craft lies about Joe. Joe does not insult readers opinions in every article. Lastly, your tip was hardly “friendly.”–Joe

And yes, I see the article you mentioned now, thanks. I didn’t scroll down far enough and that was my bad.

  52. Couch Fan Says:

I hope the people who threaten to be done with this franchise really follow through on there word. Idiots who decide to stop being fans over players coming and going arent fans anyways. Losers

  53. NY Buc Says:

Open letter to Lovie and Licht…kudos on what appears to be good job spending the Glazer’s cash on FA day 1, now please figure out how to either trade Revis for a plethora of quality draft picks or keep him in a Buccaneers uniform for at least just one more season if nobody is willing to pony up.
