Gerald McCoy Is NFL Elite

The film loves GMC

As long as the littles believe Gerald McCoy is overrated, Joe will continue to provide graphic evidence to the contrary.

This week, the film guru of theMMQB.com, Greg Bedard, updated his chart on interior defensive linemen and the pressure they put on opposing quarterbacks.

Simply put, there are only two interior linemen in the NFL that hassle signal-callers as much as GMC. That would be Houston’s J.J. Watt and Dallass’ Jason Hatcher.

In the stats calculated by Bedard, GMC leads the league for interior linemen in hurries and is second in the NFL for interior linemen in disruptions.

Joe wrote earlier that sometimes, though not nearly as sexy, disruption and pressure can be more be effective than sacks. In two of Cam Newton’s interceptions against the Bucs this past Sunday, one was caused by GMC, who was about to bat the ball out of Newton’s hands. The second interception Newton has pressure from the Bucs right end in his face.

Tell Joe what you would rather have, a pick or a sack?

  2. BucsQcCity Says:

Imagine what he could be without dancibg with teo and AC

  3. Bucfan#37 Says:

We all had high expectations for The Bucs this year. To this point it has been a disappointing season. McCoy has been a highlight, no ifs ands or buts. I believe McCoy and the evolving defense will be a force to be proud of next year and into the future.

  4. Bobby Says:

But……I thought we should have traded up to get Suh. Isn’t that what everyone said?

  5. You Go Joe Says:

Sack fumble touchdown, remember Clayborn (?? Bowers??) mentioned this a few months ago during training camp or something.

Well McCoy is a dominant player and a leader, dam proud to have him with the Bucs and hopefully we keep him for many years!

  6. Harry Says:

    @Bobby:

At the time, I wondered the same thing. Then Suh had the killer rookie year and I was disappointed we did not get him…. NOW? I love McCoy, Not only a nice young guy who really wants it, but now he is a better player. I would not trade him for Suh for anything.

  7. Adam L. Says:

I don’t know. The more I read stories like this, the more I get the impression that you’re trying to convince me of his elite status.

  8. Warrenfb12 Says:

    ^this

Sack the QB McCoy. That’s when you will be elite. Let’s see ten. Then I will tip my hat.

Almost has been good enough around here for too long. #sad

  9. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Adam L & Warrenfb12,

You should be convinced of his elite status because EVERYONE across the league acknowledges it. Every announcer of every game we have had this year has stated this. Every single coach we have played against has said they have to gameplan around him. He hasn’t been blocked one on one all season. That tells you everything you should ever need to know. He has even been triple teamed as of late. If all you want is stats, then don’t bother watching the games. You can just pick the best players in the league by who has the best stats. Let me know how that works out for you.

Let’s face it, the knock on GMac from most of the haters is because Gmac is not an asswhole. You don’t have to be a jerk to be a good football player. You don’t have to stomp on somebody when they’re down to be successful.

One of the greatest legacy of the Tony Dungy teams is that we had a a team to be proud of on and OFF the field. Then Chucky arrived and brought the Oakland mentality with him. Rah certainly continued that.

For all we can say about Schiano’s poor coaching, he has brought some class back to the organization.

I love that Gmac, David and the rest are excellent human beings as well as good football players.

  11. David Says:

I see 10+ sacks a year for the foreseeable future if they had an edge rusher forcing the QB up in the pocket. Unfortunately he is all alone alot of the times and the QB has escape routes.

  12. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @David,

Totally agree. He’ll get even more if they stop with these ridiculous stunts every play. Pretty hard for a 300 pound guy to loop around the end and expect for him to get sacks. But we continue to try with the same poor results.

  13. d-money Says:

Im sure we can all agree that Warren Sapp was elite…well he only had 10 or more sacks 3 times in Tampa. And he played on a line that included 3 other first round draft picks.

The reason why the experts believe McCoy is elite is because they know that you can’t judge a 3 technique by sacks alone. Sacking the QB is not his primary responsibility.

That would be the job of the ends. GMac is doing his job, creating pressure and causing disruption but the rest of the guys who should be coming In To clean up the sacks aren’t getting it done.

  14. SteveK Says:

    Bobby,

Hats off, you were right about GMC.

In your opinion, does Nicks come back next year ?

  15. Andrew 1 Says:

At this point, it doesn’t even matter if someone thinks he is elite or not, he needs to be resigned and his play is deserving of being our starting DT. for those who dont think he is any good, do you remember how bad our D front was when he went out with injuries? I do, we couldn’t stop a nose bleed. He is our best defensive lineman and he single-handedly makes our line better. Would it be nice if he got a little more sacks? sure. But playing along the defensive line is not all about getting sacks. The only thing I worry about with is him getting injured. That’s it.

  16. Joe Says:

Every announcer of every game we have had this year has stated this. Every single coach we have played against has said they have to gameplan around him. He hasn’t been blocked one on one all season.

Not to mention Warren Sapp himself, who thinks GMC is better than he was in some respects.

  17. PhantomVash808 Says:

Now the Bucs just gotta stop the stunts, get another good pass rusher to help out, and give GMC a contract extension.

  18. Chris Says:

^^. Former Buc analysts have said before. Sapp and rice ran a ton of stunts back in the day. Every team in the league runs them. Clayborn doesn’t know how to run them. He’s too slow.

I do agree we might run them too much. But people on this site think we’re the only team that does it. Haha. We just don’t know how and of reflects on players as much as coaches.

So everyone keeps saying we need pass rushers? Hmmm. Same thing said in 2010. Hey Dom, aka rock star, didn’t you invest first and second round picks on bowers, price and Clayborn? Fail. Not to mention let Michael Bennett walk for bowers because he was an upgrade?

  19. ElioT Says:

Get this guy some help! Sick of the other p**sies on the D-line not doing their jobs.

    Go Bucs!

  20. Bobby Says:

@SteveK…….I don’t know about Nicks. I sure want him to come back. He is elite when he is healthy and would make our run game elite which in turn will make Glennon just that much better when he does pass. I think the plan is to get him back to 100% and then, like Revis, he should be able to get back to his former self. It’s going to be a medical decision and my guess is that he will be back or they would have already had him on IR this year. They must believe he’s not that far away.

  21. Chris Says:

    Bobby,

I don’t think Nicks is going to get back to 100%. I talked to my bro who is a PA. He said the toe injury most likely will linger and said staff infections can linger and affect him. With staff on top of that , it’s hard to determine if he ever comes back at that level.

Me , IMO hate that we’re paying him elite status money when he’s not given us the ROI.

  22. sho-nuff Says:

AdamL… I get the same exact impression….its funny how they love going to the stats when its suits their argument…yet because the QB has kissed the little dawgs ring yet the same spreadsheet doesn’t apply….methinks favorites, dinner and golf outings have a lot to do with these articles…..just sayin…NOBODY is afraid of mccoy…how many tackles did he get last week?…. hmmmph thats what I thought…..

  23. sho-nuff Says:

yo bobby….dukey in one hand and put elite potential in another and tell me what is reality?….sorry I agree with chris…nicks was an absolute bust…yet another fa rip off from the pop star….dude needs to stick to plucking scrubs off of practice squads…he’s much better at it
