Surprise Game From Will Gholston

August 19th, 2018

Stepped up.

Could it be a good sign that a guy who has been invisible in training camp showed up last night?

That’s the case with defensive end Will Gholston. The Michigan State product is not having a good training camp at all. Joe has seen Gholston get chewed out by his position coaches more than seeing him make plays in camp. And after such a miserable season last year, where he had as many sacks as Joe (zero), that’s not a good sign.

Gholston is playing in the final year of the guaranteed portion of his contract, a hefty $6.5 million. So it seems highly unlikely Gholston will be released.

It was a good sign in Joe’s eyes that Gholston led the Bucs in combined tackles last night with five (along with the man formerly known as “Fabio,” linebacker Riley Bullough). Gholston had three tackles and two assists.

Gholston’s strength has always been against the run and given how he was a no-show rushing the passer last year, if Gholston cannot stop the run, then what’s the point?

So it was a good sign Gholston manned up and was a factor in the run game at Tennessee.

Gholston won’t be flashy but will earn his pay, unlike overrated players who receive free pass after free pass. speaking of overrated players, did gmc miss the team flight? i read somewhere a passenger dressed as tinker bell was unruly.

  2. Lamarcus Says:

No surprise game from me. Gholston is still our best run stopper till this day. Looks most solid outside of Jpp.

  3. Easy Says:

He had a good game against backups.

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

They left him in the game to absorb the beating because he is the most expendable Dlineman……if it weren’t for his hefty guaranteed contract….he likely wouldn’t even make the roster…..let’s hope he wants to keep making some big bucks but it won’t be with the Bucs….

A smart player with good financial advice can parlay the 6.5 million into a very secure lifetime guaranteed earning for Will & his family. Good luck Will.

Bucs are in must win mode to save careers, Gholston ain’t getting cut

Gholston and Conte…. Two Bucs that I think should get their walking papers soon. Gholston simply lack the athleticism and is really just a big body. Conte is just too much of a liability. He misses way too many tackles. When the defense gives up big plays on the ground or pass, Conte is usually right there missing a tackle or taking a bad angle. Guys like Gholston and Conte have had their shot, and no one’s been that impressed. I’m still holding on to hope for Ryan Smith. There’s been quite a few of his completions where he was in good position. I think the light can still come on for him. VH3 could go too. Too soft. This defense is getting better though.

  7. Waterboy Says:

He was still on the field in the 4th quarter he should’ve led the team in tackles. They seem to be trying him more inside now.

  8. Bob in Valrico Says:

The road to redemption has not been easy. First he thought he was overweight,so he lost weight. Since they have lined up at an interior line position frequently
he is probably giving up 20 or more pounds to his opponent.

  9. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Gholston is getting 6.5 guaranteed…….he won’t get cut……

  10. Sumo Says:

He got paid. He quit trying. Cut your losses and let him go. He’s dead weight now and they know it. That’s why he played the whole game.

  11. JimmyJack Says:

Gholston also had an awesome game last year in game 1 vs the Bears. He followed that up with awful performances in the next 15.

Big Pappa I’m with you on Gholston & Conte. Problem is we lack the depth at those positions. At least on the line we have Gholston relegated to the bench. I know the organization is hoping somebody takes that starters spot from Conte this year.

  12. SOEbuc Says:

Gholston was never known for a sack guy he is known for stopping the run which he has been good at almost his entire career here. That’s why he got resigned. I did like Bullough. I hadn’t heard of him but he was all over the place.

  13. Miguel Grande Says:

Didn’t Gholston bat down a red zone pass that was a wide open quick slant that would have been an easy TD.

  14. Buchead5588 Says:

I think the Bucs should look into the Safety the Bengals cut today George ikhola idk how to spell it lol but I think he’s a upgraded

  15. dmatt Says:

Gholston is dead weight. Five years in the league n he’s done what? I thought so!!!👎🏻 He is awful at trying to rush the passer…it’s like he’s running in place once he comes in contact with the OL. On stopping the run, it depends on the team we play. I’ve watched him against mediocre teams n he’s ur average John Doe, against elite teams during crunch time in he’s ur average Jane Doe.

  16. SB Says:

Negative Nancys out in Full Force!

  17. TampaTown Says:

Correction: Riley Bullough was formerly and affectionately known as Joe Dirt.

  18. Owlykat Says:

The defense still has a big problem stopping the run. You don’t get rid of your best run stoppers to fix that problem! Conte doesn’t cover well but he is a good run stopper. Gholston was rehired because he is very good at stopping the run. We used to be number one in the NFL vs the run and then Licht let the strongest DT we had and our best run stopper go, Spence, and we have gone down in that category ever since. McCoy is very quick off the ball and gets sacks for us but he is terrible at stopping the run. Our Defense additions from Philly were touted as great run stoppers but they were both backups and Licht never checked their PFF scores. Calais Campbell with Jax is great at stopping the run and sacking the QB too but Licht doesn’t believe in going after top talent!

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

Koetter and Licht are playing for thier jobs. Gholston will be cut. It’s in thier best interest. It’s not thier money. They need the best Dlineman and Gholston isn’t one or them. If they keep him it’s a mistake. It’s not like they need the cap room.

  20. JOSHUA L gillilan Says:

I DIDNT SEE THE SAME GAME I GUESS, I SEEN HIM BLOWN UP AND PANCAKED BY 2ND STRINGERS….HES LUCKY WE HAVE INJURIES

  21. 813bucboi Says:

bout time they play him “only” at DT…..his strength is stopping the run….let him stop the run from the inside…..took smitty long enough

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!!…GO BUCS!!!!

  22. Neal Says:

“Gholston won’t be flashy but will earn his pay, unlike overrated players who receive free pass after free pass” Im convinced this girl is either dumber than box of rocks or just making crap up to try to get a laugh. Gholston will earn his pay, but GMC sucks? ok bud. watch a little fgootball and get back to me on that one. bet y’all $10 that reality-is-a-beotch is one of those welfare queens that cried when Strabucks tried to take her straw away.

  23. Reach87 Says:

Guy played well, some say he sucks and is stealing his paycheck. Keep it coming. Sad. Go Bucs!
