Inside The Bucs’ 2017 Pursuit Of Nick Foles

June 27th, 2018

Nick Foles: Dirk Koetter man

Super Bowl champion quarterback Nick Foles sat down with SiriusXM NFL Radio and your beloved Buccaneers were a part of the conversation.

Ed Kracz captured the conversation and explained that Foles and Bucs coach Dirk Koetter had a history before the Bucs went hard after Foles in free agency last year.

Koetter and Foles had a history dating back to when Koetter was a coach at Arizona State. Koetter set his sights on Foles, who was a skinny, lightly recruited quarterback at Westlake High School in Texas. Foles originally committed to attend Arizona State, but Koetter was fired before Foles graduated from high school, and Foles changed his mind. Foles ended up at Arizona after transferring from Michigan State.

Last year, it seems Foles’ wife’s pregnancy drove the decision to spurn the Bucs’ advances and return to Philadelphia after Kansas City ditched him.

“We were trying to figure out what was best for our family,” he said. “My wife at the time was really pregnant. That comes into account. Do you want to move somewhere where you know no one or go to a city you were traded from but know so many people and wonderful people? That was a tough decision for me.”

Interesting nugget of Bucs history right here.

And please don’t go there; Joe thinks it’s ludicrous for the Bucs to trade for Foles, who isn’t that great and would command valuable draft picks in return.

Joe you’re a funny guy sometimes.

“Don’t go there” lol. Some Fans have been going there since the season ended, and many more now that the alleged suspension news broke.

  2. Knoxville Buc Fan Says:

    All Super Bowl MVP’S suck

  3. Bucnjim Says:

Or McCoy for Foles if it is more than a three game suspension

  4. jmarkbuc Says:

JW and a #2 for Foles

  5. Dewey Selmon Says:

The Eagles will not get rid of him if there is a chance Wentz is not ready.

  6. Jim Says:

I’d say Foles is looking pretty good right now. But that’s just me…

  7. AlteredEgo Says:

I feel like I’m in Gitmo being bombarded with disinformation trying to break my will as a Bucs fan….

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

    interesting but

    needs to be a 3 team trade….

Philly doesnt want JW3, they are happy with sudfeld as #2QB… they get team A #1 round pick and trade Foles to Tampa

Team A gets JW3 for #1 round draft pick to Philly

Tampa agrees and signs Nick Foles for 5 year 100 mill contract

all agreed after 2nd week of preseason to confirm Wentz status of his knee

    “Kobe Roseman”

AlteredEgo … Gitmo? LOL … now I understand the handle ‘ALTERED Ego’.

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

The talk about JW going to NE is absurd…..there is no way the Patriots bring in Winsotn to a high profile position…..I’ve laid out some evidence in previous posts about the “types” of players that NE seems to like….and it isn’t Winston.

Now…Oakland…..perhaps….Maybe Miami…..the “me too” movement won’t allow JW to survive in NY,, LA, NE…..just not happening

  11. BucEmUp Says:

He is more accurate than jameis…..just sayin

  12. put up or shut up Says:

well one thing for sure joe. foles sure played great in the playoffs and the superbowl now did he not? i think he is more than capable, and he has proven it.

  13. Chris Says:

Foles isn’t that great? So what does that make winston? Foles is certainly much better than winston.

    Darby is scum.
    Foles isn’t great.

    What is winston joe?

  14. BucfanBF Says:

I would rather be water boarded then listen to the nonsense that Foles isn’t that great. I guess all Super Bowl winning MVP’s must suck then. lmao

  15. Ateonetree Says:

Ok joe…. a Super Bowl mvp winning qb. We’re not rebuilding anymore, this team is built to win now. A trade for Foles would not be a bad idea to save the season. It all depends how hot Jason Licht seat is. I think Foles is the answer. He has chemistry with Desean and can be a great vet presence

  16. onetrickpony Says:

Why go after Foles, when we have our very own “Americas Quarterback” right here bringing attention to our team every day?
I’d do it in a heart beat, but that might make too much sense ,and we all know we aren’t known for that sort of silly stuff.

  17. Knucknbuc Says:

Damn it’s hard being a fan of the NFC browns. Perennial laughingstocks just can’t help shooting themselves in the foot.. sigh.

  18. 813bucboi Says:

well, dirk has been “coaching up” ryan griffin for how many years?…..we should have a QB battle on our hands….not sure why folks want to give fitz the job just because he barely beat the lousy fins and jets….

I say let griffin and fitz battle it out….dirk and smitty needs to rally the troops…..

unfortunately, this same staff let HK distract them….lol….no way they can handle this situation…

    #NOEXCUSESIN2018!!!!!….#PRESSURESONTHECOACHES!!!!….GO BUCS!!!!

  19. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Because all Griffin has done is carry a clipboard and hang out on IR. Hard to have faith in that.

  20. Cobraboy Says:

So when do we get the REAL suspension news?

  21. Hapa Haole 75 Says:

Appreciate the insight and opinions, but gawd dammit the constant 3rd person style self-referencing is grating and distracting.

  22. SC Bucs Fan Says:

Cobraboy about the same time JW opens his cakehole and says something

  23. BrianBucs Says:

I think that this shows that the Bucs see the writing on the wall with Winston. They know they made a huge mistake by drafting him. You can bet that they were NOT going to bring Foles here to be a backup.
Let’s see, the Superbowl MVP or the Uber Crotchgrabber that now has his second Sexual Assault allegations? Easy Choice

    Spot on bro!
Alienate the few remaining fans and then move the team.
Much easier than moving a team everyone loves, right?

  25. passthebuc Says:

If we were considering acquiring another QB, the negotiations about suspension would not be taking this long.
NFL: we are considering a 1 game suspension.
Team Glazer: No, No it must be 6 games at least.

  26. jmarkbuc Says:

When did the Shield start “negotiating” suspensions with players?

  27. Dan Says:

Nick Foles, YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES

  28. passthebuc Says:

JW is off the hook. No longer will he be the talk of the NFL.

    @passthebuc,

    Old news haha

  30. Tony LA Says:

Joe is not right on his opinion of Foles. Not close. He has a Super Bowl MVP and also put together an amazing full NFL season. He’s at the age where QBs have been able to make that leap – see Gannon as an example. He’s done more than Fitz has ever dreamed of.

Why would this regime worry about future picks they won’t be able to use unless they win now? Win now. Go get a QB like Foles.

  31. Blue-footed booby Says:

Okay Joe, you say ‘don’t go there’, but let me ask this question: If the Eagles put Nick Foles up on the trading block (which they’ve probably already did) and the Buccaneers put Jameis Winston up on the trading block, who would garner more interest and better trade offers throughout the league? I’d say the answer to that question should be telling about what the Bucs organization should do at the QB position.

  32. Maze Says:

Isn’t that great??? Bucs will definitely not be calling Joe to become an area scout anytime soon. LOL

  33. Brandon Says:

Not too late to go after Bridgewater. He’ll provide insurance for the next two seasons.

  34. AlteredEgo Says:

Would Foles then assume the moniker America’s Quarterback or does that go with Jameis to his new city ?

  37. miken Says:

Folles isn’t that good and the big shots of Disney really give a crap if Jameis is on the field for MNF…lol

  38. Tampa Bay Demon Says:

No need for Nick Foles. — Nice guy, and great story last year.

But that will wind up as his one moment of fame in he league, and we do not need him. Especially not for valuable draft picks.

Jameis is still the guy, and will prove it after this storm is weathered.

  39. Bucsace Says:

In 3 seasons has Jameis had 1 game as good as Nick Foles SB performance? But I guess we gotta be patient…..aha…aha…ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!

  40. BrianBucs Says:

Bringing in the Superbowl MVP and Pro Bowl MVP and someone who is a high character guy could be a great coup for Jason Licht and maybe help him save face from the Winston mistake

  41. Bucnjim Says:

Wouldn’t make a move unless the suspension increases. Jameis has never been suspended or had other issues (while in the NFL) Now on the other hand they would have to have hard evidence of not only this incident but others to make it six games or more. If that is the case you need to make some moves. McCoy for Foles.

    @Busace-

Well the last time Jameis played against the Eagles he threw 5 TDs and 0 INTs, so what do you think? (That was as a rookie BTW)

  43. Capt.Tim Says:

    “Foles, who isnt that great”
Does he win more than 40% of his games?
If so, hes better than what we have.

Licht said he was going to make this a “smarter team” this offseason.
    Sorry Joe,
But might be one more Dummy to go
I wanted to believe in him, too.
I bought in to all the predraft” Jameis has matured” reinvention that was happenng.
But I was wrong. His decision making, on and off field, isnt gonna change
I posted here, numerous times, that we should have drafted a QB in the first round this year. We didnt

Now, we need to get a “win now QB. McCoy, Grimes, David,JPP- this Vets wont last forever. Neither will Licht and Koetter if they lose this year

  44. Dirk Says:

I sent in a text to 620 “The Sports Animal” last Saturday asking what everyone thought about us picking up Foles! Winston has made too many bad decisions on and off the field! Honestly wish they chose Mariota. There is no going back, but the bucs can’t move forward and become a winning team with Winston. He is digging his own grave! How about Kizer if Foles is a no go?!
