Koetter: Godwin = Vincent Jackson

December 31st, 2017

Getting props from Dirk Koetter.

Earlier this summer, rookie wide receiver Chris Godwin reminded Bucs coach Dirk Koetter of Roddy White, a stud wide receiver Koetter coached at Atlanta.

Well, after Godwin hauled in a 39-yard pass from Americas Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston, for the game-winning score against New Orleans, Koetter may have changed his mind.

Koetter believes Godwin is more like former Bucs Pro Bowl wide receiver Vincent Jackson.

“I see a guy that is way mature beyond his age, a guy that acts like a 10-year veteran out there,” Koetter said. “A guy that is very tough [and] a guy that is smart enough to play all three positions. We knew he was a good player based on our draft study, but you never really know everything about a guy until you coach him. I hate to throw around comparisons, but he really does remind me a lot of Vincent Jackson. He really does remind me of the things that Vincent Jackson could do and I think the world of Vincent.”

For Joe, if Godwin because anything close to Jackson, that is a home run draft pick.

All Joe knows is that when Godwin hits the field, he produces.

Trade desean Jackson!!!!we will be fine with Evans and Godwin

  2. BrianBucs Says:

The offense looks better and runs smoother with Godwin wide instead of Jackson. And Jameis seems to have better timing with him. Kid is gonna be a good one

  3. Bobby M. Says:

Start Godwin…send Desean packing. Winston plays better with Godwin and the run game is better when he’s in there.

  4. JimmyJack Says:

I remember Joe writing stories about Godwin working with his QB when he didn’t have to. He could have been soaking in the rays living the good life like Desean probably was.

Hard work pays off….Congrats Chris. Proud to have a player like you on my team. Keep up the work!

  5. Bucnjim Says:

Again just give credit where it is due! Godwin, Brate, Humphries, David etc….The guys that showed up every week no matter what!

  6. Bucnjim Says:

TeAams are teams only when everyone plays with the same intensity as these guys week in and week out.

  7. Rod Munch Says:

But Dirk said all of this in the preseason yet he barely played until week 15 outside of the one game Evans was out. Instead you had Hump going out there and fumbling the game away as the 3rd WR all year.

  8. Lamarcus Says:

We should be putting out the same wr group every week moving forward sans OJ Howard. Yes Bobo also

Get a another rb and Peyton barber and Alan cross we will be ok.

  9. Rod Munch Says:

Wow, ESPN is saying Gruden is going to coach the Raiders. If the rumors of giving him a piece of ownership are true, LOL! Good for Gruden, he’ll love it in Las Vegas I’m sure. The fact the guy can go 15 years without winning a playoff game and spin it into getting a cut of the team, wow, that is truly amazing.

  10. Buc_The_World Says:

Someone remind me was Godwin a first round pick. All you clowns whining about us winning today because we lost one or two spots in the draft sound ridiculous.. The same people whining about draft picks will be the same ones complaining about that first round draft pick like they complain about McCoy, Winston, and Howard.

  11. Season Is Over Says:

Why not wait until he actually does something next season before comparing him to a good player like Jackson? Mike Williams was good the first year also. Clayton? How many Godwin draft picks have there been in the last ten years? I wouldn’t believe anything presently coming out of the mouth of Dirk “We were done before Halloween” Koetter. He is just thankful to be back and will hype anything positive that makes him look good while ignoring all the compiling negative.

  12. Mort Says:

Just want to say: I told you so.

I agree! There’s no way he can turn down that deal if he ever plans to come back to coaching. I wish I could afford to hire his agent!!

  14. Waterboy Says:

Goodwin will replace Jackson as the #2 WR next season either before the end of training camp or by the 4th game.

  15. Bkgrime Says:

Godwin needs to be the #2 next year

  16. Rrsrq Says:

Mike Evan, Desean Jackson, Cam Brate, Chris Godwin and O.J. Howard all were hurt this season, why give up depth, why would you trade DJax unless you are going to spend in Free Agency

  17. Rod Munch Says:

D-Jax signed basically a 2 year deal, he isn’t going anywhere – nor should anyone want him too. Hump should not be the #3 WR, he should be like a 4th or 5th WR, and dumping D-Jax means Hump is one injury away from starting again. Dirk needs to use D-Jax better, but in any case D-Jax isn’t a high volume guy and regardless of what the armchair QBs think, defenses still have to factor him in and defend him. With Brate and OJ plus Godwin and Evans, you obviously have a fantastic core – and adding D-Jax back into that is great. For runningback I don’t think in the least Barber is the answer, but he’s useful, and the Bucs should get a FA with some experience who can step in and be the man if Barber doesn’t hold up (and his AVG plummeted after he became starter, that and he has ball security issues which is an issue for RBs). I’d love if the Bucs signed a C and moved Marpet back to his natural guard position where he was near a pro-bowl player as a rookie. Donovan Smith is a reliable guy, but outside of that I’m not sold on anyone. Will Dotson be healthy and reliable? Don’t know.

Actually as I’m writing this I’m talking myself into having a good feeling for next year. If Dirk actually mixes up his play calling like he did in those last few games and Jameis ignores Dirk when Dirk wants to play for a FG like today, well it could be a special year offensively for the Bucs… again, like it was in 2015.

  18. NFLNut Says:

Trade DJax … Kelvin Benjamin got a 3rd and a 7th for a half season rental … we should be able to get a 4th at least

  19. Gencoimports Says:

Godwin was clearly playing hurt yesterday, looking gimpy after almost every play, but he produced like an all pro.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

No one is giving up anything for D-Jax when he’s got basically a one year deal for $11-million AND was injured. This D-Jax hate makes no sense – depth at positions is a very GOOD thing, and if you don’t believe me look at the WR position last year when Charles Sims was you’re #3 guy by the end of the year.

  21. Midnightstroker1 Says:

Why can’t we use D-Jax on punt and kick return?

  22. Clodhopper Says:

One thing concerns me about him. He is always getting up slowly. Not just yesterday, but pretty often. He lays his body on the line all the time, which is a good thing, but he gets up slow a lot. Ive said it before and I’ll say it again, he might not be the most talented receiver on the team but hes the BEST receiver on the team right now. I’m just concerned if his body can handle what his determination will make it go through.

  23. BoJim Says:

‘and will hype anything positive that makes him look good while ignoring all the compiling negative.’

Hey! No politics. Don’t need to be talking about our wonderful prez. 😉

  24. NJBucsFan Says:

Godwin is another stud midround pick by JL. If we could only mirror that with FA we’d be dangerous.

  25. NJBucsFan Says:

@NFLNut. Carolina picked up Benjamin’s 5th year option prior to trading him. He’s under control until 2019. Plus he’s only 26. Anything more then a 4th or 5th rd pick is a pipe dream.

  26. NoFlyZone27 Says:

Chris Godwin, I salute you sir! I am thankful that you came in from day and established yourself as a young pro. Your production on the field was not a fluke. Next season, this offense is going to be even better because your continued growth. Keep balling and putting in the work to be mismatch problem.

The talk of getting rid of DJax is nonsense. His speed is still game-changing. The offense must be better at getting him involved in the short and mid passing game instead of just the long bombs. Those will come as defenses realize they have to be concerned with the 15-20 yard receptions as they do with the 45-50 yard ones too.

Hump was balling yesterday and he is definitely a solid piece for this offense. He might not possess the same skills as the other receivers but I want a guy like that on my team.

  27. Batman Wood Says:

Godwin is going to be better than ME13, he probably already is. Stronger, better hands, more explosive. ME13 demands too many targets and his hands are still unreliable. I would trade Evans before we have to pay him. As a possession wr, I just don’t think Evans is worth the money he will get. Get some picks for Evans and go with Godwin, Jackson and Hump. Even Bobo Wilson is looking like a keeper.

  28. James Walker Says:

Isn’t Godwin 4 inches shorter than VJax?
