Chris Conte Pro Bowl Bound?

November 30th, 2017

Liked by orangutans.

Joe understands for whatever reason, fan favorite Chris Conte irks a lot of Bucs followers.

Many Bucs fans believe, for some reason, Conte is washed up. No good.

Well, the self-professed guardians of football, the sophists of the NFL, Cris Collinsworth’s outfit the PFF tribe and their well-trained orangutans, are convinced otherwise. In fact, the tribe has gone so far as to suggest Conte is the fifth-best safety in pass coverage in the NFL and no worse than third-best in the NFC.

In the graphic below, the well-trained orangutans believe Conte has allowed the fifth-lowest passer rating for a safety in the league this season. That’s high praise.

But to be honest, while this is good news clearly for Conte, Joe has never heard anyone in the NFL make the case that Conte is the third-best safety in the conference.

Is Conte much-maligned? Sure. Even Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht defended Conte in a press conference last spring.

Are fans overly critical of him? Absolutely. But Joe wouldn’t go so far (yet) as to suggest Conte should make plans to play in the Pro Bowl in Orlando at the end of January.

Hat tip @BucTillIDie.

    Conte is a scrub

  2. Mbfists Says:

I watch every bucs game more often than not he goes unnoticed
He has had some good games, but they are way to far and few between for me to ever consider him getting that nod…. but in all reality our entire back end struggles because we have no D-line 1 consistent player will never be enough

  3. Bucsfanman Says:

    Conte>Ward!

  4. BoJim Says:

    Kool. Go Chris!!

  5. AC Says:

Conte is the least of our worries at this point.. fix the DLine and watch the DB’s flourish

  6. Buc believer Says:

Yawn!!! Stats are for losers. Ask Joes favorite loser Mr. GMC. He is a stat machine but he is s perennial loser.

  7. Bird Says:

    Oh wait more stats. Great.

Give these stats a break. Who cares

  8. Bill Byrne Says:

Conte should be Pro-Bowl bound. He has earned it on a very bad Bucs defense.

  9. I'm a Tandyman Bucs Fan Says:

    You guys are kidding right??????????

  10. Mikadeemas Says:

Well DAMN, I guess I won’t be seeing him or any Bucs for the rest of the season. FOX Tallahassee pulled the Bucs’ games off their schedule because they suck…….I’m passed!!! GO Bucs!!!

  11. Mikadeemas Says:

    No, I’m pissed!!! Past Pissed!!!!

  12. tmaxcon Says:

Players on dysfunctional teams with no hope for improvement should be ineligible for awards including the meaningless popularity contests like the pro bowl

  13. Conte Piscateli Says:

Football is a team sport. Nobody associated with this putrid defense belongs in discussion for a pro bowl. I get that LVD is having a pretty good year, but if they offer it he should turn it down. This defense is going down as another historically bad unit.

  14. Bucsfanman Says:

    ^^^Agreed!

  15. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I love how J0E mocks PFF…and then uses them all the time, lol. Too funny.

  16. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Conte isn’t the best Safety in the world, but he’s the best one on this team.

    hahahahahahaha

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Is anyone else worried about Jameis getting killed this Sunday? Still not convinced his shoulder is 100%. Throwing is one thing, but can it take a pounding … he is playing behind a make-shift Bucs’ OLine after all.

  19. tmaxcon Says:

    Defense Rules

can’t coach or play scared. The entire roster has been make shift for over a decade this week is nothing new.

  20. Conte Piscateli Says:

    Defense rules

I’m not worried about Jameis, I think he needs to play and play well. Especially with the off field stuff up in the air, he needs to play well enough the Glazers don’t feel a need to look to move on with our high draft pick this spring. I think these last few weeks may be prove it time for Jameis.

    Conte sucks

Probowl is a straight up joke. Period.
I thought the hit that hurt The Moose Knuckle Grabber was late and should have been flagged.

  23. BigHogHaynes Says:

This coaching staff is worse than LOVIE’S FRIENDS AND FAMILY…TAKE A KNEE KEEP AMERICA FREE! Conte to the Pro-Bowl…that’s just ludicrous !!!

  24. Jim Says:

This just shows how completely ignorant fans are about how a particular player is ACTUALLY performing. It is like Bucs fans read the cover and look at sales numbers to see if a book is worth reading.

  25. BucTrooper Says:

No one trails a big play in the NFL like Conte.

  26. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Football is a team sport. Nobody associated with this putrid defense belongs in discussion for a pro bowl. I get that LVD is having a pretty good year, but if they offer it he should turn it down. This defense is going down as another historically bad unit.”

So you expect a guy to turn down 50K, as well as an award that is held in high regard in regards to your individual career? Really? That’s beyond ridiculous, and is why fans just aren’t capable of rational thought. That’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all day.

That being said, Conte has about as much right to being a Pro Bowler as you have to being in the booth of MNF. He’s not even the third best safety on this team.

  27. EasyTheGreat Says:

Conte has been our best Safety by far this season.

  28. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“Conte has been our best Safety by far this season.”

    ———-

Exactly why? What world are you living in? Evans is better than him, and he’s a rookie. You can’t point to one stat where Conte is better, and the eye test is even worse than that. He’s not a great tackler, he’s not great in pass coverage, he makes bonehead decisions constantly, and he plays with little to no emotion. It’s not so much I’m ripping on the guy and pointing out he’s far from our best safety. In fact, he’s our worst safety. The fact that he’s playing over Keith Tandy is a crime against humanity, and one of the many reasons we are 4-7.

  29. chipbuc Says:

I know this is off topic but I want to know why Dotson and Marpet were put back into the game after suffering apparently season ending injuries? Koetter did the same thing to Winston after he was hurt,it was apparent that Winston could barely lift his arm but Koetter kept trotting him out there. Trying to save his job? Just saying.

  30. Another J Says:

There must be two Chris Conte’s out there, and The other one is good…

  31. Tom Says:

IMHO I think the Bucs best safety is the up & coming Evans with Conte second

  32. Lamarcus Says:

Conte been living on gmc island. Stats but the eye test says different island

  33. VA BUC Says:

@joe shut up you know conte sucks your such a hypocrite dude i swear next game he blows an assignment and then you want him outta town make your mind up

  34. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Watch the play Tandy made last year on 4th down against New Orleans and tell me if Conte can make that same play. There is no way in hell anyone can answer yes.

  35. Mike Johnson Says:

I don’t see one player we have worthy of All Star Pro bowl consideration. Not one…..

  36. SOEbuc Says:

Yeah the stats might be good because it seems TJ Ward is in much more often lately. And the Bucs get murdered in pass coverage every week by every team so…

  37. SOEbuc Says:

Even though early mock drafts never turn out to be correct, I’ve seen a few that have the Bucs getting SS Minkah Fitzpatrick (Alabama) in the top ten. I know we need edge rush but if he’s still around when we pick, you pick him and get a DE in FA, trade, and early other rounds. It’s still early, but I really think Justin Evans is starting to produce more and more. If Evans can continue to produce him and Fitzpatrick could dominate the safety positions (more than likely).

  38. SOEbuc Says:

And apparently Fitzpatrick can be a good CB with the snap of a finger.

  39. derrickbrooksforGM Says:

Why do you troll us so Joe?

  40. DoNUTS Says:

    All Star? Isn’t that baseball.

That is like calling Winston, America’s QB. A misuse of an unearned title.

  41. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol wtf really PFF? might want to re-run those #s

  42. Bucsfanman Says:

LC- It reminds me of a saying I once heard, “It’s hard to soar like an eagle when you’re surrounded by turkeys!”
Not a whole lot of Pro Bowl caliber playing going on this year.

  43. Pickgrin Says:

If Conte was the league’s 5th best pass defending safety – he would not be splitting time at 1 spot with 2 other players…

  44. bucs_365 Says:

Note that the #1 rated safety in the graphic is the guy who was the #2 ranked safety in the draft where Mark Barron was #1…

  45. godzilla13 Says:

PFF’s passer rating in coverage means that when QB’s target a receiver being covered by Chris Conte, there passer rating is only 49.5. I am sure there is a percentage error rate associated with the player who is assigned the coverage but in the far majority it comes down to who is running with the receiver at the time they either catch or do not catch the pass and all players are graded the same way so any error rate should effect all players the same or very close to the same. My point to Hawaiian Buc who says Evans is better than him, and he’s a rookie. You can’t point to one stat where Conte is better and he plays with little to no emotion.? Conte has the fifth lowest passer rating in coverage of all Safeties as pointed out above. Better than Evans. Plays with no emotion? Conte puts his heart, soul and body on the line every game and is more intense (emotion) than most players on this team. He finally gets some great statistical information and you and others on this site can’t accept some positive feedback and just want to put him down. To Pickgrin Says: Sure he would split time with way our defense is being coached. Congratulations Chris, your playing great, even elite in coverage by PFF standards.
