Drama!

Talks creative editing of “Hard Knocks” with a Bucs wide receiver.

Football fans claim they don’t like drama, but they do. Oh boy, do they ever.

The NFL became the behemoth it is in large part because of drama. Look at old NFL Films stuff from the 1960s and 1970s, which fueled the popularity of the sport long before cable TV became a standard utility in households throughout the nation. Those films were built on drama. The camera angles, the close-ups, the writing, the coaches and players wired with microphones, the narration, the music.

Shoot, Super Bowl Week is one long drama production beginning with Super Bowl media night. The NFL is keenly aware of how drama drives popularity — and TV viewers.

It is part of the reason “Hard Knocks” was created.

The power of drama also is a reason Bucs fans are so angry at the team this year, because of the build up fueled by “Hard Knocks,” that HBO, NFL Films-produced reality series that starred the Bucs this summer.

Joe had caught “Hard Knocks” with creative editing. Joe even had players tell him some scenes were artfully edited and crafted into a package that made a scene more than it seemed.

Yesterday, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, referencing the Hard Knocks drama of Bobo Wilson, a bubble wide receiver, bolting Tampa to Miami in the final episode when the team wanted to sign him to the practice squad, stopped just short of saying it was a scripted piece.

“First of all, remember, ‘Hard Knocks’ is a TV show – not all based on fact,” Koetter said. “I think that [the Wilson intrigue] might have been a little overdramatized.”

Bucs officials were caught by NFL Films cameras frustrated by Wilson’s absence to the point they were ready to wipe their hands clean of him and bring back misplaced Calgary Stampeder Donteea Dye.

The Bucs finally got a hold of Wilson and gave him a deadline to return to Tampa, or he would have to find another team. Wilson met his deadline. Yesterday, he was promoted to the 53-man roster.

    and this is important because?……

que @realist,” I giving this staff and players a pass because of HK”…..

HK is the reason why we cant score….cant defend….cant make adjustments….keep getting blown out….keep coming out flat…its all HK’s fault….GO BUCS!!!!

  2. The Buc Realist Says:

After snooping around, word on the street is that officials when asked if hard knocks was a distraction, gave a huge groaned, then asked if they would ever do it again, and the answer was a explicit “H3ll NO”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

as someone said early this offseason…….OMG its The “Realist Repost”!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the owners signed up the Bucs and are forcing it on them, then that is fine!! they can sell more jersey’s and the Buc fans out west will love it!!! But I will think of the year differently!!! My expectations for the team has changed!!!! The goal of going deep in the playoffs will change to “just being national recognized”!!!!!!

In other words I will give coaches and players a huge pass this year if we do the NFL’s longest commercial!!!!!!

I do not see how this helps the team on the field, and I do not see NFL’s best head coaches lining up to be on it!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!

  3. BucFanFromOH Says:

    @813bucboi

You missed a small detail in every one of Realist’s posts, I think what you meant to say was:

que @realist,” I giving this staff and players a pass because of HK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

“In other words I will give coaches and players a huge pass this year if we do the NFL’s longest commercial!!!!!!”…..

why would you be giving them a pass @realist?…….the only acceptable way for us not to make the playoffs this year is if a significant injury happens to our qb….other than that im expecting playoffs this year…..the combination of dirk and smitty should be enough to stir the team clear of distractions….we have young hungry leaders that want to win now….im not buying the distraction argument…..we cant be afraid of the big stage….

saying you’ll give them a pass this year is a major cop out…..that’s BS….GO BUCS!!!!”

Good call on the injury to QB so the Bucs coaching staff does have a pass in your own words!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Go Bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  6. 813bucboi Says:

    BUCFANFROMOH

    YOUR RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!!!!

  7. 813bucboi Says:

    @realist

by significant, I meant torn acl….broken collar bone….something that requires surgery or Winston to be out for the season….Winston has missed 3 games…4 if you include the half of the saint and cards…..

    so that’s 1/4 of the season….not half….not 3/4….not the entire season….only 4games out of 16….C’MON MAN…..

as you can see, ive been closer to being right about this team and staff than you ever were….you’ve lost all creditability…..you and trying to blame HK is as funny as they come!!!!….NO EXCUSES!!!!!!…..GO BUCS!!!!!

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I don’t care if Hard Knocks was a distraction or not. I got an inside look at the team for the first time. Well worth it.

And now we can’t be considered for it for a while.

  9. You go Joe Says:

What an unnecessary story. Joe you usually just go straight to the point but you dragged this far too much for only 2 sentences that koetter said.

You’ve done better with much less quoting.

  10. Defense Rules Says:

Excuses are for losers. Winners don’t need them.

Fact is that everyone … media AND fans, me included … got overly excited this past spring & summer when it came to the Bucs. It’s not the injuries that did us in this year, it’s the mediocre talent at certain positions. Bucs have several bonafide stars (and no, Jameis isn’t one of them yet), but we also have some gaping holes in various positions. Plus our depth, across the board, is marginal.

Coaching can do a LOT to marginalize various weaknesses, but this coaching staff (on BOTH sides of the ball) hasn’t exactly worked any magic in that area. Instead, they’ve allowed our opponents to take advantage of our weaknesses on both defense and offense. Dirk & Smitty could’ve done quite a bit better IMO, but I suspect the outcomes would’ve been the same. Bucs just don’t have the horses. We can make excuses all year long, but until we get better talent across the board, we’ll continue to be in last place in the NFC South.

good backup Qb’s you hope go .500!!!!!! He is 2-0

so your significant injury to the QB excuse is out the window!!!!!….fitz did his job….we were struggling to score and defend before Winston got hurt….its not like the wheels fell off once he got injured….GO BUCS!!!

  12. Bucsfanman Says:

@DR- Perfectly stated. Outside of LB and TE, we are thin. We have a small smattering of legit talent at various positions but clearly not enough.
Coaching has been AWOL and don’t get me started on play-calling!

Yes, i will sacrifice myself in behalf the the tampa bay bucs.

If tampa wins i will not post here ever again

    Lets go bucs!”

  15. Defense Rules Says:

Bucsfanman, beyond our LB corps & TE group, Bucs also have some bonafide talent at WR (ME13, DJax, Hump & Godwin), plus a couple of ‘old’ horses on the DLine (GMC & McDonald & Ayers & Gholston are all keepers IMO). Plus we’ve got Marpet & D. Smith on the OLine, as well as Jameis (and 2 good back-ups) at QB. I think Evans will ultimately be very good at Safety, and that R. Smith & VHIII will work out at CB (the latter at nickel). We’ve got several ‘OK’ players (like Chris Conte & Noah Spence) & we’re solid it appears on STs. So we’ve got quite a bit to build around.

Problem is, ‘quite a bit to build around’ will win us maybe 4 games a year. Couldn’t agree with you more that our #1 need is to ‘Build the Trenches’. Our OLine needs 3 new starters, and our DLine needs at least 3. We need 1-2 outside CBs (depending on what Grimes decides to do after this year), plus another Safety. Our RBs have me puzzled right now because it’s hard to figure out how good or bad they are based on OLine play, QB play & play-calling. I personally think that Martin & Sims could get the job done for a year or two with improved OLine blocking, better QB play & better play-calling. But hey, I’m not the one paying them.

  16. Bob in Valrico Says:

Pretty much agree with Defense rules. As far as the horses go, Jason Licht has to do better in shaping our roster. Free agent signing of Ward,Swearinger, and Baker didn’t add enough talent to the roster. I haven’t seen evidence that Sweezy is worth the investment so far. So far we are paying for his rehab and a possible return to form. But not till next year, will we Know if thats true. DJAX would be a much better addition if Jameis was better at throwing deep, but i credit him his help in the shorter passing game and the ball he snatched out of a bigger stronger defender hands highlights DJAX’s overall football awareness.

  17. Mike Johnson Says:

Defense Rules//You and many others were bambozzled and hoodwinked!! I never, ever, get excited about the Bucs until I see what kind odf Defense we have put together. I’m not a..best QB enthusiast. I’ll take an average Qb anyday over Jameis. But I do want a Kick A.s Defense. And until we get that again, we shall be smothered in mediocrity. Many here say Nay. But Just look at the handful of games we won, Defense was kickin….

  18. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

    Hopefully, he replaced Hump?

I like Hump, just please get that guy off the football field this year

He’s been a liability out there the whole season

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

    Tampa vs Greenbay

we will witness jameis 2nd coming

this will be tampa vs philly the sequal

jameis will play lights out and shut the holes of the mariota maidens

koetter is stating to playcall more shorter pass routes

    godwin / OJ and uptempo

Jameis will account for 3 tds or sunday will be my last day posting

these last 5 games, koetter will finally use jameis skillsets to try to save his job

  20. Erik w/ Clean Athletics Says:

Side note, we need to use DJax like Gruden used Galloway… As a possession receiver as well as a homerun guy.

Sometimes the fastest guy is the only one who can get a little seperation consistently

  21. ben Says:

Jamis skill set is not being able to throw deep or hit his many receivers in stride. Plus he has slow starts and makes bad decisions on the field.

  22. Pickgrin Says:

    Kobe Liar says:

Are you familiar with the story of the boy who cried wolf Kobe?

Hope Bobo gets some snaps over the next 5 weeks. I’m betting he’s a keeper.
