Pressure? Bring It!

October 11th, 2017

What pressure?

The more Joe listens to folks talk about kickers and reads about kickers, these guys seem like they are two steps from an institution.

All Joe reads/hears is how they are all headcases. That pressure wilts them.

Baloney, said new Bucs kicker Patrick Murray. He fielded questions from the local pen and mic club yesterday at One Buc Palace and Murray waved off any mention of too much pressure on his shoulders to stop this rash of bad kicking that has flared up on the Bucs the past three seasons.

“Well truthfully, if you can’t handle the spotlight it’s probably the wrong profession to be in,” Murray said. “I’m sure Jameis [Winston] gets scrutinized, as well. I’m sure Gerald [McCoy] and Lavonte [David] get scrutinized, as well.

“There is pressure at every position, but it’s how you deal with it. To be honest with you, I feel very comfortable in this locker room. I know these guys feel comfortable with me, so I think we work well together and I’m looking forward to the challenge.”

Joe’s getting to the point where he is sick of reading about the fragile mental woes of kickers. Just make your freaking kicks and enough of the whining and excuses and hand-wringing.

    Hear! Hear!

Murray has always been a mentally tough guy. He’s not just a “regular” kicker. He was an exceptional Gaelic football star, a game as tough as rugby. Kicking is a sideline he can exploit.

Dude is an athlete, not just a kicker.

  3. Lamarcus Says:

Yea agree Joe. Just make ur field goals and help win games

Yes we have heard it all… Now the deal was with the holder??? Brian Anger had nothing to do with the two previous kickers and their problems. I am always at the Bucs end of the field in pregame warmups. Trust me on this, the kickers we had couldn’t kick field goals pregame with no one holding the ball. They set it up with their little plastic kicking holder, then proceed to miss kick after kick. I saw Roberto miss 4 or 5 pregame!!! It’s a head game 100%, these guys are rattled, and once that happens…. move on.
I can’t think how heartbreaking it is for the rest of the team to sit and watch this debacle.
With each new kicker, there brings hope lol

Great comments from him, I am excited about his mentality and the prospect of his leg. It is unfortunate but kickers probably do have different minds. It is an isolated job. Sure you rely on a good snap and hold but unlike other positions you aren’t really part of a unit, 11 guys working together. Same can be said of goalies in hockey and probably pitchers in baseball.

They may very well be mentally tough but a lot of them are weird ducks. I have played with some weird goalies in my time… the pressure and isolation is just a different animal that some deal with better than others.

Welcome to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Patrick Murray!!

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

Me think we will see Murray put to the test in action very soon in Arizona. Be ready Mr. Murray.

In 20 years are we gonna see Nick Folk as a psychopathic, female police officer trying to kill Bryan Anger. “What. Would. You. Know. About. Pressure?!”

  10. Capt.Tim Says:

My fingers are crossed for our young Itish Kicker.
Hope he keeps the job for the next 15 years!

Folk had been a very good kicker.
Joe, have you heard any thing about Folk being injured, and leading to his problems?

  16. Pick6 Says:

there are 20-25 teams in the league who don’t have to freak out about the kicking game. I hope we can finally join the majority. the domino effect of the aguayo move was not just that we could have drafted position players we still desperately need, it also served to make the Bucs’ kicking game the most dissected one in the NFL – Aguayo and Folk couldn’t take the heat, the biggest accomplishment Murray could claim is if people start ignoring him like they do almost every other kicker in the NFL who isn’t actively screwing his own team
