Cook = “Primary Back”

March 31st, 2017

Seamless fit.

If the Bucs seek a “primary back” to play 70 percent of the snaps but not be the focal point of the offense, Greg Cosell of NFL Films has two words of advice: Dalvin Cook.

As one can expect from Cosell, he does a break down of the Florida State running back’s virtues.

And while Cosell doesn’t believe Cook is a “foundation back” that an offense is built around (like Ezekiel Elliott), Cosell believes Cook can be a very effective NFL running back with his speed and pass-catching skills.

Cook is a very good player with good NFL traits. But he has to be in the right system with the right utilization. Cook’s best NFL comparison could be Atlanta Falcons running back Devonta Freeman. Freeman had 227 carries and 54 catches last season (and was a fourth-round pick). Freeman can hit big plays in the running game and passing game. If Cook develops into a Freeman-type player, the team that drafts him should be very happy.

Just because I don’t think Cook is a foundation back like Fournette or Elliott doesn’t mean I don’t like him as a player. He has good skills and a lot of talent. Even if he’s a back who plays 60-70 percent of the snaps, which he’s best suited for, that has great value in today’s NFL.

Devonta Freeman may be one of the most underrated backs. He was a key cog in the high-flying offense of the Dixie Chicks last season. It’s a helluva comparison if you ask Joe.

And speaking of asking, Joe will ask you this: You don’t think the Bucs could use a guy like Freeman? Hell yes they could!

And guess who coached up Freeman when he first entered the NFL? That would be winning Bucs coach Dirk Koetter, who was Atlanta’s offensive coordinator when Freeman was drafted. If Koetter can develop Freeman, then he surely could develop Cook.

Feel free to do the math here.

Cook is the perfect fit for TB

  2. Buccaneer scotty Says:

1+1=cook? If he’s available at 19 it’s so hard to believe he will be.

  3. German Buc Says:

There’s a lot of wisdom in your words, Scotty…

  4. FLBoyInDallas Says:

The math I’m doing is a simple formula with an answer that says Cook will be drafted before #19.

The other math I’m doing is a statistical in nature, and it says the Bucs will likely be left choosing between Njoku, Davis or McCaffrey as the top rated players on offense by the time their pick rolls around.

Or they could surprise us all and draft a DE at that spot.

One thing is sure: Cook is highly unlikely to be wearing pewter with digital clock numbers this season.

  5. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Ah yes, Devonta Freeman. Another sterling example that starting caliber Backs can be had well outside of the 1st round.

  6. Ocala Says:

    Cook is ideal for us

  7. Buccaneer scotty Says:

Thank you German Buc,I hope he’s there at 19 but I believe the Jaguars will take Fournette and the stinkin Panthers will take cook.but you never know.

  8. Ocala Says:

Delvon cook would make a tremendous positive impact on our offense

  9. Buccaneer scotty Says:

I also believe it will be Nijoku possible McCaffrey unless the Saints grab McCaffrey he seams like a perfect fit for them.

  10. BigHogHaynes Says:

    MIXON SIMPLE AS THAT!

  11. Pickgrin Says:

Whatever. Put Cook behind Dallas’ OL and he runs for 20+ TDs a year. Elliot’s the one whose over rated.

Cook will be long gone at 19. No trade ups. Its a deep draft at a # of our need positions. RB, Safety and TE in particular. Let the draft come to you Jason. Be patient and smart and you will get 4 very good football players in the first 4 rounds that meet our needs well.

  12. Jeagan1999 Says:

RB is so deep this year, it might be better to wait until round 2 or 3….unless Licht and Koetter are convinced that Cook or MCaffrey (Fournette will be a top 10 pick) is a “can’t miss” player. Otherwise, I’d go Howard, Njoku, or Davis in Round 1, then grab a guy like Kamara, Foreman, Hunt, Mixon, etc. in the second round.

  13. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

I like vooks build, style and strength, but I will take Mccaffrey vision and heart over cook all day. I dont give a damn about his bench reps. Christian is the more talented running back

  14. Kevinthepainterimagine Says:

Cook is not as good as freeman…
Again freeman has better vision. Doesnt matter they are not going to take a running back with the first pick

  15. Lou. Says:

The Bucs have a big need at safety. The draft can solve the problem for 5-10 years l. That’s what the draft is for.

We also have needs for an all-around TE, for backup WRs and DL, for developmental OL and CBs. And of course for RBs. But nothing compares to the hole and the need at safety.

Kind of teaches the team about opportunity cost. Should we take a luxury pick on a kicker or fill a need at safety? That was the question last year. When you choose the wrong answer — or the wrong player — the problem doesn’t go away and you get to face the same question, more urgently, the next year.

  16. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Pick give any team that picks before us and breakdown to you why they won’t be drafting Dalvin Cook. Just because a super talent is available doesn’t mean everyone is thirsty to acquire them. I’ll wait for your teams sir. I’ve been doing research on every team ahead of us.

  17. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

That gose out to any of y’all. Let me know who you feel is most likely to draft him. And the debate will begin.

Blake I’m waiting on your teams bro.

  24. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Bro I’ve already got enough information on what teams I think are candidates to draft Cook.

  25. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Pick you make it your business to stress that everyday but you can’t give me one single team you feel your gut is telling you he’ll end up there???

  26. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

  27. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Crickets. Take my @$$ back to sleep. Just be running y’all mouth.

  28. Blake_bucsfan Says:

I already know exactly what you’re going to say.

  29. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Mark my words, If the Jags take Fournette, Cook does not make it out of the top 10.

  30. Destinjohnny Says:

    2nd round Value

  31. Pickgrin Says:

    NOS –
Jags at 4, Jets at 6, Carolina at 8, Bengals at 9, Saints at 11, Eagles at 14, Colts at 15.

There’s 7 teams drafting ahead of us that would be glad to add a top 5 in the last 10 years type talent at RB to their roster and may well be willing to spend a high 1st round pick to do it. There are 2 RBs in this draft that are that good and worthy of high 1st round selection.

One of those 7 teams will pick Fournette – probably Jags or Jets as the dude literally looks like the next AP. But Cook’s versatility is actually a better fit for the Bucs and likely other teams as well. Fournette will almost certainly be the 1st RB off the board – but Cook’s unique skillset and talent and TD creating ability will be very hard to pass on for any # of those teams I listed before we pick at 19.

If Cook gets past #11 I will be surprised. If he is still on the board at 16 I will be shocked.

And if Dalvin Cook somehow makes it all the way to #19 and the Bucs are smart enough to nab him (which they almost certainly would) – then you and I will both be celebrating and I will GLADLY eat my crow for consistently saying pre-draft he will not be available at #19.

Will you do the same when he becomes a Carolina Panther or a New Orleans Saint and then tortures us twice a year for at least the next 5 years?

Go watch Cook’s ultimate highlights video again and then ask yourself how in the world at least 10 teams starting with Carolina could pass on that type of talent and explosive production sitting there for the taking. Not gonna happen bro. Hope I’m wrong but your continual insistence that the Bucs will land Cook are based more on desire than reality. You will see that as an accurate statement once the draft unfolds. Unless Licht does something stupid like trade up in the 1st round for a RB that is….

  32. Buc 4ever Says:

For those who don’t watch FSU football or college football as a whole would know that Freeman is no where near the player that Cook is. Not taking anything from Freeman because he is good, but Cook has the IT gene in football. Dynamic things can happen whenever he touch the ball. I want Cook, but don’t trade for him because we can take Nijoku in 1st and Mixon in 2nd and be in great shape. Miron fits our offense and has the same abilities as Cook. And please stop this McCaffrey stuff. He will be good in slot or as a RB catching passes out of the back field or bubble screens but he can’t carry the rock 15-20 times a game.

  34. TarzanTheBucsFan Says:

Joe cmon i know you and nole are absolutely in love with cook but there is a post everyday and its getting annoying. Why dont you do an article on corey davis every day or oj howard. But there not from a florida school so i guess thats out of the question

  35. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m sorry Nole, but I just do not believe Koetter and Licht are targeting Dalvin Cook…not that I would mind them picking him. I just don’t believe they will.

My instincts tell me they are targeting someone else, and that they are enjoying all these predictions about Dalvin Cook, because it increases the chances that another team won’t take the guy they really want.

    Again…it’s just my instincts.

As to who they actually do plan to pick, I don’t know, but I’m going to guess that more money was not the only thing they promised Mike Smith to get him to stay. I suspect they had to commit this draft to defense, at least multiple picks, and that includes the first pick.

I’m leaning toward safety, because I just don’t believe Wilcox is good enough to start, so signing him is probably a smokescreen.

  36. JabooFSUBUCS Says:

man these media members (which is what any of them are regardless of what they did in the past/getting paid to talk football) are getting out of hand! DC is much better than freeman, and I love freeman. DC broke FSU rushing record in 2.5 seasons. Let that sink in. Next, all this talk of him not being zeke is getting annoying. In 2015, DC was the better back over zeke. DC is a better back than zeke. The only reason he went top 5 is because jerry jones was crazy enough to do so. lets not forget the year before zeke got there they were either top or top two in rush offense. DMC led the league in 100 yard games. ITS THEIR O LINE which would make any rb look amazing. Dont get me wrong, i love zeke, but to put it out there that zeke, or LF for that matter, is better than DC is laughable. I would take DC, Zeke, then LF in that order. Also, why does cosell think DC will only play 60-70 of the load when he handled all of it at FSU. And check the stats, ACC defenses in general are extremely physical and tough, esp against the run. Silly Season. Cook will be the best back in this draft and will be a 3 down back that kills it for whomever drafts him. Heres to hoping its not in our division. Also, Bucs do not need to trade up for anyone. take BPA. Prayers up that DC falls! Go Bucs!

  37. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Change is here Says
    “Going back to bed at6:45am?

Well someone doesn’t have a job!!!!”

He could work at home like I do. I name my own hours, sit on my couch and do my work. I take naps if I want (rarely) and days off when I feel the need (again, rarely; not even weekends).

My account gets deposits frequently (including today, which was a very pleasant surprise) and I earn every penny.

I probably put in more hours than anyone here, and technically, I’m retired. I put in a minimum of 60 hours in a week and go as high as 84 or more. And I enjoy doing it. To me, overtime means progress, and I thrive on it.

  38. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“I probably put in more hours than anyone here…”

from the comment I just posted which is being moderated for some reason, I should make note of a correction. I would imagine the Joes put in as many or more hours than I.

  39. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

JabooFSUBUCS, if any team has a running back carry 100% of the load, that team needs new coaching staff.

  40. JabooFSUBUCS Says:

buc bon you know what i mean dude cmon. you picked at one of my points, and the point still holds true. he overwhelmingly carried the load at fsu. cosell suggesting he couldnt do that in the NFL. speak to my overall points if you want to have something to say bud

  41. meh Says:

There is no way I would take a back that is “not a foundation back” in the first round.

  42. Marques Says:

Great if you can get a Devonte type in the 4th don’t waste your 1st or 2nd on a running back. He’s not a generational talent. He’s good not great. Plenty of Rb’s that play all downs in the 3rd or 4th that have comparable talent and greater value.

  43. Joeypoppems Says:

I’ve said it a couple weeks ago. How far Cook falls, if he falls at all, is depends on 2 teams. The Jags and the Panthers.

I think the Panthers are going with a RB at #8. If the Jags take Fournette then the Panthers will take Cook. If Jags pass on a RB then the Panthers will take Fournette and then the slide for Cook begins. Just my opinion tho.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

I love all these dudes that come on here saying. “Don’t take a RB in the 1st round” or “He won’t make it to 19.” Then scroll a little more and some dude says “He’ll be gone before 19.”

Many draft folks have about THREE rb’s taken off the board in the 1st. I tend to believe them over the dudes that say “they won’t draft a RB in the 1st.”

  45. Lord Corn Says:

No offense to Freeman but in college Cook has looked like the much better prospect and it isn’t close.

Cook is like a bigger Freeman with more home run potential

  46. Hawaiian Buc Says:

I would be beyond thrilled to get Cook, but I just don’t see him slipping all the way to 19. I know a lot of the mocks have that happening, but most mocks are pure garbage and can’t be trusted. All it takes is one of the 18 teams in front of us to open their eyes and draft him. I can’t see us trading up in the first round to get him. I’m just not going to get too excited about a guy I think we have a very small chance of landing.

  47. ndog Says:

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again Cook is better than Elliot and he is way better than Freeman and I’m a FSU guy who loves Freeman. Freeman shared carries at FSU and had Jameis to take pressure off the run game. Cook was far more productive in the same offensive system with a much less talented offense around him. The QB was not special, while Freeman had the #1 overall pick, the receivers were non existent while Freeman had Greene and O’Leary (not in the NFL but way better what FSU had the past 2 years at TE). In addition the oline was horrible for Coil while Freemans line went undefeated and won a national title. Again this is all in the same system so please again tell me how Freeman is even close to Cook?

  48. Buc1987 Says:

    Dalvin Cook is delicious.

Fergalicious definition make them boys go loco
They want my treasure so they get their pleasures from my photo.

I got reasons why I tease ’em.
Boys just come and go like seasons.

    Fergalicious (so delicious)

  49. bucNation Says:

it’s a funny comparison because devonta was not nearly the player dalvin was at fsu but obviously he’s made big strides in his game and is one of the top 10 running backs in the league i think it’s a good comparison but i also think it’s selling dalvin a little short. when i think of dalvin i think of a david johnson type or i know this one will sound a little weird but before he ko’d his wife and was one of the top 5 running backs ray rice was electric in booth the running and passing game he put up 6,180 rushing yards 3,034 recieving yards and 43 total tds now we all know what happen to him but just from a player stand point dalvin and rice have a lot of similarities in their stature and build and the overall way they play

  50. Destinjohnny Says:

    Jabril Peppers is the pick.

  51. LargoBuc Says:

If Cook gets paat the Colts and Eagles, he’s ours. Cook and Quiz gone light things up.

  52. Eric Says:

Remember when Rbs were barely touched in the first round? The only thing that has everyone clamoring for an RB in round 1 was the success of Zeke. That thing is an outlier. He was so good, as several have mentioned, cuz of the o line. Period. Dallas will have a solid offense but their defense will come back to haunt them this year. Especially since they took that lb who has barely healed and not to mention randy Gregory and that miss on greg hardy. Oh ya and they have all 3rd stringers in the backfield.

My point is it’s 2017. RBs are not a hot commodity and with the exception of fournette, I expect it to continue. If Zeke hadn’t been selected so high and so successful we wouldn’t be having this convo. I see fournette going high and I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if cook drops to us and potentially even further down. We want a te and im confident in that. Or obi.

  53. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Cook was already injured in college and they hit harder in the pros. Druggernaut ran great as a rookie got injured 3 out of 5 years as a pro now look at him. Dougie has never been known as a fumbler but Cook has a lil bit of the fumbleruskies(11) so unless he learns to keep that ball high and tight what do you think is gonna happen to him in the pros??? From what I’ve seen Fournette is the most explosive runner of this draft kinda like a little AP but all the guys being talked about are good runners. I think McCaffrey has the all around best abilities but I question his toughness at the pro level. Very few of the Mike Alstott mold ever comes out of college but plenty of the Lagarrette Blount tough guys that do come out. One thing I don’t think any of them played 100% of all the games so all we need is a rb who needs to play 70% of the snaps but still can be dangerous in the passing game. Being that Kirk&Fameis like to go downtown more often than dump offs I can see them going WR or TE with the 1st 2 picks and an RB with the 3rd. Then finish up on defense the rest of the draft. A great TE affects the run and pass game and we need an heir apparent to groom behind Action, Flash, Jackpot Jackson.

NOSBOS on a side note I saw something that would make your heart smile. I work up here in Va. Beach Va. Blah blah blah, non of this is for certain, and as I have already proven, I’m willing to wager that one of these teams will go full copycat mode and draft Cook early.

  76. Joeypoppems Says:

I was listening to a podcast this morning and one of the hosts, who was at the owners meetings, said Chuck Pagano when asked about the RB position said it is paramount that they get younger at the position.

Paramount- more important than anything else.

So I would say the Colts are definitely drafting a RB at some point. Doesn’t mean for sure that it will be round 1, but if a RB is the best guy on their board at the 15th pick then they will most likely pull the trigger.

  77. Eric Says:

  88. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

Jason Licht and Koetter mentioned multiple times that they like our current group of RBs and yet we all expect them to draft a RB.

I’m really starting to think that it might be kinda accurate…

    What is “bunch rain”

    Is that something sexual?

Count me out if it is.

  95. LargoBuc Says:

After last year, I have a hard time believing that Dirk is happy with the current group. He may have said as much but it would be wise to draft one, hopefully Dalvin, be it in the first or larer. Just someone to bring a shot of adrenaline and excitement to the group.

  96. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I also read they are seeking CB to play opposite Vontay Davis. Looking for Replacement for the just retired Robert Mathis. And NFL network mentioned ladt night that Luck has yet to fully recover from last seasons injuries. So tell me how can you rule out O line not being a first option for the colts Pop???

  97. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Was waitin on someone like you chumpchange to say something like that. Surprised you were actually able to be ebonically correct. Pretty much sure NOSBOS does it to get a rise out of the tampon croud, you know………white, uptight and out of sight kinds! The let’s make America great again crowd. 😂😂😂

  98. Joeypoppems Says:

I dont even know what you mean by that lol.

I’m just saying you think everything our GM says that goes against the idea of them drafting Cook we shouldn’t believe.

But you think you figured out the Colts gameplan out because Irsay said they needed DE and RB instead of RB and DE lol.

  99. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Change my I know you and Blake curious about who I am outside jbf I mean why else would dumb@$$ make it your business to chime inn. Grown folks were talkin. Ion know bout you but I was taught when they are kids should just shut and listen.

  100. Fsuking Says:

Cook and Freeman have nothing in common outside of FSU. I took about an hour yesterday dissecting this article on Yahoo. If you are gonna write such an elaborate piece on a player, wouldn’t you think the guy would at least watch some game film? He clearly just watched a highlight video

  101. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Pfft. You’re an actual joke dude. You’re the one that ends up bringing up peoples personal business.

Whatever, just carry on with you’re infantile rants.

  102. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Let’s be honest here…anyone above us could choose Cook. The draft is largely unpredictable. Heck, someone could trade up to beat us to the punch too.

  103. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Y’all funny seeing is how you can allow an animous poster by way of they’re comments make you wanna know about them personally. That’s weak son. Get yo self some business. Focus on makin a dolla and less about someone on the internet. Lame.

  104. Joeypoppems Says:

OL could absolutely be an option for them in the 1st round. All I’m saying is that they want to get younger at RB, so if the best RB left on the board is better than the best of every other position they need that is left they will draft that RB.

It might not even be Cook. They could like McCaffrey more for all I know. I’m just saying don’t rule them out for drafting a RB

  105. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

King we know Freeman is good but Dalvin on another level. Not really even debatable.

  106. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Check the archives I’ve never said it is impossible to think another team couldn’t draft Dalvin. My position is it is more possible that he may very well be there at 19 than people seem to think.

  107. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

No if I recall correctly no one inn here asked what you did (or don’t do) for a living. You made it your business a month ago to mention your personals. I thought it was foolish but that’s just me.

  108. Fsuking Says:

    @kevinthepainterimagine
WTF are you talking about man? Freeman and McCafferey better than DALVIN COOK? My god it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever encountered. I guess Martha Stewart is also a better running back? Your ignorance is frustrating to those of us with eyes and ears who watch football

  109. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Now Pop if you feel Licht and Koetter saying they are happy with our current group and therefore wouldn’t be thinking about drafting an RB early then that’s your opinion bro. I feel differently.

  110. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I’m still waiting on them to tell me how top ten ranked defenses McCaffery faced while at stanford???

  111. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

I agree with that. I think that there is a better chance he falls to #19 than goes in the top 10. That doesn’t mean for sure that they will pick him, but he would be a strong candidate

  112. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

H3ll what was the highest ranked defense he ever faced while at stanford??,

  113. Blake_bucsfan Says:

I’m gonna be cheesing from ear to ear come draft night knowing that you’re in the hole for about 400 bucks.

  114. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

I will be shocked if we don’t draft a RB in the first 3 rounds.

  115. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

  121. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

I just can’t wrap my head around it. We(the Bucs) are smart because we know better than to draft an RB in round one. But the rest of the league is dumb as h3ll because they would be quick to do so. Hmmm.

A yo chumpchange my mom’s told me to tell you 👋 hello dude☺..

  137. Joeypoppems Says:

    @Nosbos

I looked up the 2 best rushing defenses that McCaffrey played against last season.

Washington – 28th ranked rushing defense: 12 carries for 49 yards (4.1 YPC), also had 5 catches for 30 yards. They lost 44-6

USC – 31st ranked rushing defense: 31 carries for 172 yards (5.5 YPC) and 1 TD, also had 3 catches for 66 yards and 1 TD. They won 27-10

  138. Tony from Los Angeles Says:

Ezekiel was an exception last year. Not the rule. Good teams do not draft running backs in the first round when you can get guys like Jordan Howard (the 2nd leading rusher in the NFL last season) much later. I love Dalvin Cook, I’m an FSU alum and huge fan of his, but I want the Bucs to win and win Super Bowls more than I want them to draft FSU guys. If the Bucs are smart they will wait and take an elite talent like Mixon later in the draft and a premium position like WR, DL, DB, or Ol in round 1. Before people start something on Mixon’s character, it has to be known that Dalvin has had similar and more instances in his past as well.

  139. Dan Solaz Says:

Can’t we all just get along

  140. Dan Solaz Says:

Im all in on the Cook train. Hell I’m all in on any pick we make that don’t turn into a bust , like so many in the past. WHOEVER our team picks im gonna support and believe in. I’d love to see Cook in our backfield and I’d love to pick up AD as well… Can’t have to many quality backs on roster, especially after last year. But if we pick a starter in round one and round 2 it will be a successful draft.

  141. Joe Says:

    Joeypoppems:

    Solid research man.

The main thing Joe likes about Cook is that against top-shelf opponents, he had some of his best games.

Go look at what Cook did vs. SEC teams, vs. Clemson, vs. Oregon, vs. Michigan.

  142. Pickgrin Says:

NOS – why do I have to be online for you to respond with why you believe none of the teams I mentioned will draft Cook before the Bucs get to pick? Just list your reasons and I will see it whenever I get a minute to check in. As addicted as I am to this site, I ain’t got time to be sittin on JBF all day…

And how about you and Blake be a little more respectful of each and quite acting like children with the name calling and imaginary put downs. Nobody wants to read that chit.

  143. Joeypoppems Says:

Yea Cook definitely performed great in the big games. There is no arguing that.

  144. Pickgrin Says:

    quit

  145. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Yeah you’re right Pick, I need to just quit arguing with him period.

  146. Pickgrin Says:

Cook is an absolute stud RB prospect. Like I said – one of the best 5 RB prospects to come out in the last 10 years IMO. Definitely a better prospect with better College tape than Elliot who went #4 last year. How in the world does a talent like that last 18 picks? He usually doesn’t. Of course anything is possible and certain highly rated players do slip in the draft each year. It’s just very unlikely Cook makes it 19 is all I’ve ever maintained. Would love to have Dalvin and if he does slip to 19 I will be very happy to have him in the backfield w/ Jameis.

Hawaiian summed up my feelings regarding Cook coming to Tampa Bay perfectly:
“I’m just not going to get too excited about a guy I think we have a very small chance of landing.”

  147. Pickgrin Says:

Cook is the better prospect – but I’m actually allowing myself to envision what McCaffrey could do for this team. Because there’s a better than 50/50 chance McCaffrey will be available at 19. Probably a 70-80% chance. I give Dalvin Cook about a 10% chance of being on the board at 19 and that’s probably over estimating. He’s too good a RB. 3 down backs that can do it all with incredible productivity coming out of College are damn hard to find. Add in 38 rushing TDs in just the last 2 years and you can’t tell me there aren’t at least a handful of teams picking before us that are drooling at the idea of getting Dalvin in their backfield.

  148. NFLNut Says:

Cook is waaaaaaaaaay better than Freeman … I don’t get that comparison at all. I view Cook as closer to Jamal Charles than Freeman.

  149. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Aaahhh, time to go get on this gas station clock.

  150. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

A yo thanks Pop for the info.

  151. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Okay Pick like stated last night. Jax just signed Chris Ivory to a deal last season. Are they really ready to pay yet another RB big money being selected fourth over all??? Most mocks I see have them going the saftey from LSU.
The jets are going into the season With Nosh McCown on they’re roster do they don’t technically have a QB.
Carolina I stated last night Rivera watched his defense fall off a cliff last season. With depatures of Ealy and Klien as well as two second year corners add in Charles Johnson back surgery and adding old man Peppers I imagine Rivera wants to get younger on that side before he gets all giddy over Dalvin or Fournette. Not to mention Johnathan Stewart was given an extension.
The Bengals last I Check Hillman and Bernard were still on they’re roster right..
The saints seem to be doing Just fine With Hightower and Ingram.
The Colts have needs at DE,O line,CB AND RB. Which do you think will be the biggest priority of Irsay. Mind you Turbine was extended and is lobbying for a bigger role in the offense. Irsay said at the owners meeting they need a DE as well as RB. You rank’em.
The eagles lost both Starting corners from last season,Bennie logan gone Connor Barwin gone. Alshon Jeffery like Many told me When I initially said his name is injury prone hince the one year Deal. Torrey Smith will be on his what third team.
Ravens lost two starters from last season’s O line. And gave Danny Woodhead a Deal. Who did Leave out???
Oh yea The skins who Just allowed what they’re fans called they’re best D linemen to walk on a defense that was fairly average last season. And already have young quality RB on they’re roster.

  152. bucs_365 Says:

I’ll use that first for the passing game or pass defense, and I’ll draft Marlon Mack in round 3. Better bang for the buck.

  153. 813bucboi Says:

not all scouts and nfl experts are as high on cook as others….wish we could get the good with the bad, like all other prospects….people act is if cook has no flaws….lol….

Had a disastrous combine that didn’t match the skills you saw on tape. Penchant for taking runs to the outside, as opposed to keeping it tough and grinding between the tackles. Average in pass protection and needs to do better with blitz recognition and squaring up blockers. Fumbles have been an issue over the course of his career. Laundry list of off the field concerns that must be vetted by NFL teams….

    this is why this reporter has cook falling…..5’10 210 4.5 speed….nawl I rather have a 6’0 235 4.4 monster in the backfield…#donteforeman….GO BUCS!!!

  154. TarzanTheBucsFan Says:

Just shut up nosbos. Your very ignorant to everyone who doesn’t like cook and you want a woman beater, puppy beater and a drug dealer just sayin. Oh and he a lso has had to surgeries on his shoulder and fumbles every 63 carries. He may be good but that does not translate in the nfl. You better start saving that cash for draft night homie. You gonna owe a lot of people a lot of money.

  155. Buc1987 Says:

Pick…I’m thinking McCaffrey too. I don’t know why, just am. Trying to figure him into the offense and I kind of like it. We all have our favorites, but I’m not even sold on RB in the first yet.

  156. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Just EAD jane. And oh btw the Jags allowed Prince Amukamora to get away in free agency as well.

  157. Pickgrin Says:

OK NOS – Sigh…. I’ll play your little point by point debate game.

Jax – With 7 years in the league, Chris Ivory averages 719 yards rushing and receiving combined per year. Fournette and Cook will both have double that figure or better every single year they are mostly healthy. The best friend of a talented yet struggling young QB is a big time running game… Getting the offensive ship righted is priority #1 in Jacksonville. Fournette to Jax – Book It!

Jets – No QB is worthy of the #6 pick on most (smart) teams boards – Matt Forte turns 32 during this season. Any team that would seek out a RB like Forte in free agency at his age would obviously have some natural interest in a versatile, game breaking RB like Cook.

Panthers – Jonathan Stewart is on the wrong side of 30. He averages 737 yards rushing per year over a 9 year career and has only broken 1000 yards once in his career – 8 years ago. And he doesn’t catch the ball very often either. Defense is still the undisputed strength of The Carolina Panthers. Having a dynamic playmaker in the backfield with Cam would be a HUGE asset to Carolina’s (at times) struggling offense.

Bengals – Cincy’s #1 back Jeremy Hill has averaged 816 yards and 3.7 ypc over the last 2 years and is used primarily as a 1st and 2nd down RB. He runs a 4.66 40 which is quite slow for an NFL back. Bernard is faster and can catch the ball but he’s primarily used as a 3rd down back. Bringing in a true 3 down RB with dynamic playmaking and TD scoring abilities is going to be hard for the Bengals to resist if Carolina passes on Cook.

Saints – Mark Ingram is the only RB on New Orleans’ roster with any real experience or talent. He has averaged 706 yards per year over his 6 year career and has only managed to average 6 TDs per year counting both running and receiving. Cook will have more TDs for the Saints in 2 1/2 years than Ingram has in 6. Ingram did have his best season in 2016 with just over 1000 yards rushing and 46 receptions. But Dalvin Cook would be a clear upgrade in every manor over Ingram. The Saints (who went heavy on defense in last year’s draft) may see his talent at #11 as being just too good to pass on. Cook’s skillset fits the Saints needs and desires for a RB perfectly. And Breese ain’t getting any younger. A big time running game and dynamic receiving threat out of the backfield might just help him extend his career an extra year or 2.

Eagles – Ryan Matthews has averaged 510 yards per year over the last 3 years and Darren Sproles turns 34 this year. Nuff said. The value on Cook’s talent at #14 starts to become a major factor.

Colts – Frank Gore is the only decent RB the Colts have and he turns 34 this year. Turbine is a low end journeyman – has 1291 yards total in the last 6 years. You think prioritizing a strong running game for the foreseeable future to assist Andrew Luck’s ability to give his team a chance to win year in and year out is not important to Irsay, Luck and the Colts? And at 15 – Cook’s value starts to become irresistible…

If Dalvin Cook does somehow drop past 15 – the urge for at least 1 or 2 teams picking behind us to move up and snag him before we pick at 19 is going to be pretty significant.

So yea – there’s less than a 10% chance Dalvin Cook lasts until pick #19 by my estimation.

  158. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

You left out the skins who ranked 21st last season rushing w/106 yards a game and 3rd in passing with 403 yards a game. Don’t seem like young Gruden all that concerned with running. That or maybe they’re still trying to figure out whether or not they a have franchise QB. You up Pick. Break them down.

  159. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Whole lot of “Ifs”in what you typed tho.

  160. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Chumpchange I’m already up to $485 in gas sales today. Now that’s what you call Cook.ing.

  161. Buccfan37 Says:

Imo, NoS-BoS makes it all worth reading. Serious and funny at the same time.

  162. Pickgrin Says:

Skins have 5 young RBs on the roster – none would be considered “good”. 2016 UDFA Robert Kelly is the best of the bunch. They could use a back like Cook for sure – but will likely go defense or perhaps select John Ross to replace the speed they lost w/ DJax. Not out of the question for them to take Cook though were he to be available – or perhaps more likely, field offers for a trade down should Cook or a player of his caliber be available at 17.

  163. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

Just got a break from that gas pump and had a chance to thoroughly read that Pick. I feel its even more “If” based now. That last part is truly intriguing. So you’ve created yet another scenario that many feel doesn’t make sense for us but would be totally sensible for other teams. The trade up. Y’all try but its hard to hide what you posses inside.

  164. Pickgrin Says:

Just because I and others don’t feel it doesn’t makes sense to spend valuable draft picks trade up for a RB in the 1st round in the deepest RB draft in many years doesn’t mean that other team’s GMs or Jason Licht won’t do it.

The Bucs would almost certainly be one of the teams contacting Bruce Allen to see what he would want to trade down from 17 should Dalvin Cook slip all the way to 17. Draft trade chart says a 4th round pick + our #19 pick would be the proper value to go from 19 to 17. I’m on record as saying I would support that move. But definitely not willing to give up more than that when a hell of a weapon in McCaffrey who grades just a couple ticks below Cook IMO is more likely than not to be available at 19.

A lot depends on how teams are grading Dalvin and this is something we cannot know. But I Do know that most smart scouts and GMs put a very heavy part of their overall evaluation on game tape assessment. Cook’s tape for a RB prospect should rate as an A+ top 10 talent by almost anyone’s standards if viewed in the proper perspective. The Noles faced fairly tough competition compared to a lot of these prospect’s College schedules and Dalvin kicked ass against some of the better defenses in the country whenever given the chance. And did so with a not so great Oline the last 2 years when he was the most productive.

My contention the whole time is simply that it is HIGHLY unlikely that Dalvin Cook will be available for the Bucs to select with the 19th pick. Will he slip out of the top 10 where his tape rightfully says he deserves to be drafted? Perhaps. Will he slip all the way to 19? Very unlikely. That’s all I’m saying. And I personally have no interest in the Bucs trading a 2nd round pick (gets us up to #12) or even a 3rd round pick (gets us up to 15) in order to draft Cook.

Id be very happy to draft Cook at 19 – but unlike you NOS – I am not willing to pay any more than a day 3 pick in addition to our 1st round pick to get him. Too many other needs and this draft is too deep at positions where we have other needs – like Safety, TE and DE in particular.

We will be able to get a very good RB in the 3rd round. At least a couple or more among Foreman, Hunt, Perine, Mack and perhaps even Mixon are quite likely to be available when we pick in round 3.

It would be great to land Cook – but my preference would actually be to trade down in the 1st and then take S- Budda Baker. WR Zay Jones in the 2nd, RB hunt in the 3rd and a TE in the 4th.

  165. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

    @NOSBOS & Blake
Yo, why we gotta be arguing all the time. I understand if someone disrespects you that you can get @ em. But y’all be goin at it on some personal $hit. I know I’m not always the nicest guy, but y’all go too hard. There is no need for it. Let’s just agree to disagree. I’m cool with NOSBOS and Blake, but y’all need to chill.
That being said, if cook is there (idk if he will be) you take him. If he’s not, let’s trade back and pick up extra picks and Budda Baker

  166. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Yeah Mike the GOAT, it’s gotten out of hand, that’s why I’m just gonna let him talk stupid from now on and not argue with him. It’s not gonna lead anywhere.

And btw I think it would be incredible to trade back and get Budda Baker. If we can trade back, get Budda and extra picks, then get either Zay Jones, Chris Godwin, Curtis Samuel, or D’onta Foreman in round 2.

This draft is deep as can be at nearly every position that we need to address, I’m almost convinced that the best thing we can do is acquire as many picks as we can.

  167. Mike Evans GOAT Says:

My favorite rb if we can’t land cook at 19 or Forman in the 2nd is Brian Hill from Wyoming. Guy is 6’1 220 and ran a 4.5. Runs with POWER. Got some Lynch in him. Can get him in the 5th or 6th. Mark my words he will be a baller.

  168. Nole on Sat.-Bucc on Sun. Says:

    NOSBOS
I get it y’all don’t like each other. But dam y’all go too hard. After the draft I would expect it to be a little nicer around here. Whoever we take ALL of us gotta get behind the team.
