Draft’s Inexact Science

How did Devonta Freeman of the Dixie Chicks grade out worse than Charles Sims?

Regular followers of Joe on Twitter know whenever the Dixie Chicks are on the tube, Joe moans about how the Bucs passed on two-time Pro Bowler Devonta Freeman in the 2014 NFL draft and instead selected Charles Sims almost a full round prior.

It is a mystery to Joe and speaks to the inexact science of football scouting.

Freeman is a key cog in the offensive machine of the Dixie Chicks, champions of the NFC. Sims is an oft-injured pass-catching running back who cannot run between the tackles and acts like he is auditioning for a Bruno Mars dance troupe when he tries to run around the edge.

Freeman can run between the tackles, can catch the ball out of the backfield, and doesn’t try out for Britney Spears’ Vegas show.

It is baffling how Freeman was not drafted sooner than the 103rd overall pick he was. This isn’t a Bucs issue; this is an NFL issue. There were seven running backs drafted before Freeman and Carlos Hyde is likely the best of the lot.

In college, Freeman was the 1,000-yard rusher of the then-national champions and demonstrated his skills playing in a pro-style offense. Sims, while he had good numbers, played in a gimmick offense at Houston — Houston! — and for a middling Big XII team in West Virginia, in a conference that plays defense a step or two better than a flag football summer league.

Just on paper alone, Freeman over Sims seemed like a no-brainer. Again, this isn’t a jab at the Bucs — Lovie Smith thought Sims was his next Matt Forte — but this is instead a jab at the NFL in general. The entire league whiffed on Freeman.

And here we are: Freeman and the Dixie Chicks are going to the Super Bowl, and the Bucs are looking for a running back.

  1. cascade Says:

I think that the Bucs selection of Sims was less about head-to-head RB comparison and more about them targeting a pass-catching back, and Sims is one of the best at that when healthy… Not justifying the pick, just suggesting why they took Sims over Freeman. Personally, I’d rather have Freeman, without a doubt.

  2. Kentuckybucsfan Says:

Should have took Guard out of MissSt Jackson drafted by Oakland in the 3rd round after SIMM.

  3. Defense Rules Says:

@Joe … “Again, this isn’t a jab at the Bucs — Lovie Smith thought Sims was his next Matt Forte.” Can we take it as a jab at Lovie Smith instead Joe? Reality appears to be that, strictly from a personnel standpoint, Lovie’s first year here in Bucsville was nothing short of an unmitigated disaster. A 2-14 record is bad enough, but his personnel actions set us back several years. Not just in his disastrous FA acquisitions AND in his releasing several decent starters, but also in his drafting that first year. Out of 6 all-offense selections, ASJ, Herron & Edwards are already gone and Sims has likely now joined that group. But hey, thanks to Lovie we did draft Jameis.

  4. Rojas Says:

IMO Sims was supposed to be more like Coleman, but that didn’t happen he’s too busy trying to dance behind the line.

  5. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I like Sims. I didn’t when he was picked, but he has grown on me. His health is an issue though.

And I don’t really view him as a runningback.

  6. Rrsrq Says:

Maybe it’s coaching, Coleman was drafted one year after Freeman, for competition, Freeman started off on fire year two, but after 6 games, injured and fumble problems (Bucs fans would’ve been ready to run him), this year his coaches that preach toughness and true competition, has him where he is at, not saying he didn’t get it by hard work, but coaching makes a difference, ask ME

  7. Rojas Says:

I feel only Sims can stay healthy he can be our ty montgomery

  8. Rojas Says:

    I feel like* sorry typo

  9. thunderchunkyPA Says:

Joe, you are right, you NEVER know. One of the greatest players of ALL time, Tom Brady, went round 6. The Hall Of Fame is full of guys drafted3rd round or later. hell, even your first round picks flame out.

  10. 941BUC Says:

Well Joe good thing movie is OUTTA HERE!because so far licht has done a helluva job!has hitting on draft picks just as highly the BUCS are in desperate need of a WR. Really high!and I’m not complaining!hey Joe did you ever get info on Mike Smiths Renewed contrast?

  11. dmatt Says:

My hope is that koetter n litch r doing their homework to come up with a plan to take on the falcons for the next several years. It’s evidence that coach Quinn had a plan. We need playmakers n game changers n it won’t happen with these recent cfl signees or humphries, stocker,Charles sims, dye,Mcdougal, conte, etc. n it won’t happen with a conservative offense when u have a qb who plays his best in the no huddle. we need beast mode players at wide out, no exceptions. Julio sparked the fire on offense n Neal did the same on falcons defense. Let’s go Bill Billichick aggressive in the draft n FA. Wideout John Ross n or Dede Westbrook.FA Eric berry, desean Jackson, playoff n playoff experienced defensive ends Charles Johnson n JPP. That’s what it’s gonna take to dethrone the falcons n others.

  12. Bird Says:

Again. This is why they need to spend in free agency. Just signing their own guys is not good enough Still have to many holes and no speed. With Carolina the year before and now Falcons who are in division going to Super Bowl, the bucs need to compete now . For example, look at receiver Sanu. Had a huge game yesterday. Alex Mack is a stud. They brought in defensive guys and spent money for them. Bucs need to follow suit. Can’t just keep their guys and expect draft to get them over the top cause let’s face it, that is usually only 2 starters a year (draft). Say what you want about NFC south, but it’s tougher than people think

  13. Stpetebucsfan Says:

Nice to get some perspective in our draft discussions. This is why I smile when I read guys here going at each other with picks they believe are locks.

Someone mentioned Brady…maybe the most famous but 21…I still can’t believe it…21 !!! WR’s were selected ahead of Antonio Brown.

But this works the other way as well. Who would have suspected we would get the leader of our defense, the player now being called the Jameis of the defense in the 4th freaking round. Pamphile is also looking like a steal. And the best gems of all…UDFA’s like Cameron Brate. Let’s hope we have that kind of draft this year complete with a UDFA or two that sticks.

  14. Phil Says:

Everybody knows FSU players are the best.

  15. Jeagan1999 Says:

I was at the NFC Championship game in Atlanta yesterday, and the SAME thought crossed my mind….”This guy could have been a Buc”!

Anyway, watching the dominant performance of MattRyan and the Falcons offense, it occurred to me that the Bucs could be the exact same kind of team, with just a few more pieces in place. We’ve got our QB and #1 receiver…we need our “Sanu” and “Freeman/Coleman” now to gives us the weapons necessary to be that prolific a scoring machine.

I was also very impressed with ATL’s offensive line. For the most part, Ryan had plenty of time to throw. Bucs could use another lineman or two.

  16. gotbbucs Says:

Nobody was bitching about Simms two seasons ago when he was an awesome compliment to what Martin was doing on the ground. One year and a drug addicted running mate later and all the sudden he’s hot garbage again.
Let’s just ignore the fact that Atlanta has 3x as many offensive weapons and a better offensive line than the Bucs to take pressure off.

  17. Jim Says:

Uh, the “Dixie Chicks” are playing in the Superbowl. Jus’ sayin’…

  18. gotbbucs Says:

I hope the next article is about how we messed up by not seeing that Tom Brady was going to be a 1st ballot HOFer.
I understand that you’re saying it’s an institutional problem spread across the league, but you could go back to the begining of the NFL draft and play shoulda-coulda all day long.

  19. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Think Devonta good. Man wait til y’all see Dalvin. Lets not make that mistake again Mr. Licht. I’m sure you’ve learned from it.

  20. bucsfaninchina Says:

Charles Sims was selected all bc Lovie’s eyes were as big as saucers when Sims was being touted as Matt Forte 2.0

  21. BigHogHaynes Says:

FREEMAN is on a better TEAM …… Better team, better blocking and Sims will perform better! BUILD A WALL!!

  22. CalBucsFan Says:

    Still trolling Joe?

  23. R. McKenzie Says:

Need to trade Sims, injury prone, can’t run up the middle and has had only a handful of good plays.

  24. ndog Says:

Nosbos you are relentless man, just relentless. I just am really torn man cause you know I love me some Dalvin but man we could use a center and another WR. We just need so much on offense to help Jameis and it really going to be about what is there when we are picking cause I dont see us trading up, but you never know with Licht as well all know.

  25. Eric Says:

Although I agree that Freeman is better than Sims, I wouldn’t say the margin is that huge.

Sims was one of the best complementary backs in football last season. He dropped less passes than any rb in the league. He also had the most receiving yards in the league for a rb if I remember correctly.

His issue this year was the inconsistency at RB and instead of him solidifying his spot as a receiving back, he was forced to be the #1 back several times and didn’t have much consistency. We all know at this point that Sims is not a featured back. He is one of the best comp backs in the league though.

I have full confidence that he will be back to that status and amongst one of the best tandems in the league next season with consistency in that unit and improvement on the o line.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

sims is good he’s just being used properly….he was a good change of pace back to martin or a bruising runner….GO BUCS!!!

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

Like gotbucs said, we can play coulda, shoulda all day long. It is NOT an exact science which is why some do not advocate trading starters for picks. Also, BigHog put some perspective on it. Atlanta’s a far better team. Obviously!!!
Sims is not an every-down kind of back. Once we re-establish our run-game, he can be the complement he was meant to be.

  28. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

ndog 😊 I don’t believe he is as common a talent that some here would lead other to believe. I tend think he will have the biggest impact of any player in this class especially if he lands in the right location. He’s The best to ever do it at that position in the state of Florida. Thats saying something becuase this state has put some bad @$$ RBs in this league. I think he’s a rare talent at position we need help. That’s why I’ll be campaigning for all summer.

  29. Pickgrin Says:

Sims looked great in 2015 as a change of pace back. His strength is receiving but he ran quite well in relief of Martin – even between the tackles – and had a 4.9 yard per rush average on 107 carries as proof.

All anyone seems to remember though, is the game and a half early in 2016 where Sims struggled as the feature back once DM was hurt. Yet no one (especially Joe!) remembers how badly the Oline was playing – and how bad the run blocking was the 1st few games of 2016. There were very few holes and Sims needs a bit of space to work with in order to be most effective.

Sims will be fine in that complementary back role if he can stay healthy – which so far is the biggest question – can he stay healthy?

And no one has mentioned it, but I believe Jeff Tedford’s desires played a big part in who was drafted in 2015 – and that in particular applies to picking Sims in the 3rd round IMO.

  30. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

BigHog check Quizz’s yard per carry in comparison to Sims and Martin. Glaring. ndog an upgrade at center would be huge, but my line ain’t terrible. You have the out put we had in 2015 an be terrible. Just need to add a star to the backfield. And watch him operate. Those runs Quizz had would be homeruns wit Dalvin.

  31. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Funny thing is on Undisputed Shannon revealed that initially the Falcons wanted A.J.Green. He’s reeealll good. But there’s only one Julio. They’ll only be one Dalvin. Later round RB my @$$.

  32. Pickgrin Says:

    NOS BOS says:
“He’s The best to ever do it at that position in the state of Florida.”

SMH – Um- ever hear of a guy named Emmitt Smith? The guy from Pensacola who broke multiple records in 3 years at UF and went on to become the NFLs all time leading rusher?

Now you are just being ridiculous dude.

We ain’t trading up for Cook so all this lobbying you are doing for the Bucs to do that is just boring and annoying

  33. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Who do we currently have on our roster that strikes fear on the offensive side of the ball???

  34. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Pick shake your head till it falls off. Dalvin’s college numbers are better dude. They are same size, only difference is one is blazing freaking fast. Now when you’re done with that crystal ball let me use so I can check this weeks powerball numbers will ya.

  35. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Didn’t catch that last line you know what you can do talking that annoying ishh. Scroll past and kiss my @$$ dude.

  36. JJBucFan Says:

Sims can’t stay healthy, he is not a good runner between the tackles, his hands are very good but he had 2 drops that turned into INT’s. He is not for me…at all. Yes he flashes, I get it, but all-in-all he is a Dud not a Stud. When he comes in the Defense knows it is a pass. Take ATL- Both of their running backs can run and catch, keeps the defense on their heels. I was watching the play calling for all 4 teams yesterday and just thought to myself how vanilla our play calling was. That better change in 2017 or we will sink right back to the bottom. Goal line play by the Steelers, I was laughing and saying the Bucs would run this right up the middle twice. Then the Steelers did it and lost yards on both plays, forced to throw on 3rd down. Bad pass, good coverage, kick the FG and the game was over. That changed everything in that game! IMO- get rid of Martin, get rid of Sims and start fresh. There are good RBs in this draft and can probably get a serviceable FA. Again if Cook is available, you take him, then take Mixon in 3rd or 4th and your RB problem should be fixed for the next 5-7 years. Both can run, both can catch. No TE in the first round- very deep TE draft as well. I’m all for Ramczyk if Cook is gone and move D Smith to RT and we may be set for 10 years. Grab a Center in a late round as well. No matter what,#weaponsforwinston includes protecting him.

  37. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

JJBuc these @$$holes act is if I’m out of bounds when it comes to a major pisition of need. S@$! kinda strange to me.

  38. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And you right get rid of both of them.

  39. LakeLandBuc Says:

During the exact same draft (2014 NFL Draft). We passed on WR Allen Robinson, WR Devante Adams, WR Jarvis Landry for a Drunkard TE ( ASJ). And now here we are begging for receivers.

  40. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And people keep throwing Mixon name out there. Understand with the current atmosphere in the NFL when it comes to this domestic violence chances are he won’t get drafted. When you Youtube his name the incident is the option you see before any game highlights.

  41. JJBucFan Says:

Nos-Bos these are all just opinions don’t take it personally. I think we are all in shock that Martin just torpedoed his career, the only RB under contract that I am aware of is Barber. I hope they re-sign Q Rodgers. The fact this isn’t done yet is beginning to worry me. I do not like WR in the first round, but M Williams and C Davis would make me re-think that. Not a fan of Ross in the 1st but if we took him, I wouldn’t complain. We are back to needing everything on offense again. My eye test tells me our O-line isn’t good enough, despite the stats Joe throws up. Winston needs to stand upright, look at what Brady does with no name WRs. Obviously not comparing JW and Brady (the G.O.A.T) but more time and he can turn Martino or Hump into Hogan or Amendola. Obviously I don’t believe the play calling wasn’t very inventive either. Protection is the key for Winston. He will hit the deep ball he will pick you apart underneath if he has time. Anyone who really watched him at FSU knows what he can do. His last year, our O-line was not very good, in fact an all-american Bobby Hart was downright pitiful and we still made it to the playoff against Oregon.

  42. B Dawg Says:

I agree with Pick. All this Delvin rhetoric is boring and annoying. It is like reading the same thing day after day after day. We get it, you want the Bucs to draft your boy Delvin. Okay, next topic.

  43. JJBucFan Says:

He was 17 years old, the girl came at him first, slapped him and he decked her. Not defending him at all, just saying he was too immature to handle that situation. I don’t know what his home life was like either, but he paid his price and seems remorseful for the incident. Hasn’t been in trouble since. Sometimes you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and he lost football for a time (rightly so) and it looks to me he has re-dedicated himself. I would like to see him go speak to high schoolers and other colleges about what he did. I think that would be tremendously powerful for the young kids to see and hear from a peer about domestic violence. I know St. Pete might not agree, but he was an immature, entitled 17 year old (which of course is not an excuse). I tell my 3 boys if they ever put their hands a girl/woman, they will have to deal with me and they are not gonna like the outcome.

  44. Pickgrin Says:

Don’t take offense NOS – I’m not attacking you nor your desire for Dalvin to be a Buccaneer.

Dude I attended FSU – I follow Seminole football pretty closely. I battled relentlessly with idiot Winston haters for months pre draft in 2014-2015 right here on these JBF comments long before you ever started posting here.

I get it. Cook is a special talent. I would love to have him be a Buccaneer and couldn’t get the card to the podium fast enough if I was GM and Dalvin was still on the board at 19. I would even trade a 4th round pick to move up 2 spots to get him if he lasts till #17.

But no way am I spending 1st, 2nd and 4th round picks to move up into the top 10 to draft Dalvin Cook or any running back for that matter. That’s what its going to take. And if you don’t think so – then you are not being realistic.
Jason Licht knows better. He’s not going to give away the farm for 1 great running back prospect.

In one breath you say Cook is one of the 3-4 best players in the entire draft and will have more impact than any other player drafted – and in the next, you are talking about him lasting until #13 like you expect that. So which is it?

It was different when I and a # of commenters here including the Joe’s and led by ’87 were lobbying so hard for Winston in 2015 – different because we had the #1 pick.

Your hopes for the Bucs drafting Cook are far fetched is all I am saying and you are just setting yourself up for a letdown if you believe they are likely or even realistic.

  45. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Here his is again trying to compare Dalvin Cook to everyone in the book.

And trying to justify he lust for him because the Falcons traded away 3 first rounders for Julio Jones.

This becoming quite the tired affair…

  46. JJBucFan Says:

I love Cook, but as I have stated before, DO NOT TRADE UP FOR ANYONE! We need way too much. We are not one player away. But if he is there, you take him!

  47. JJBucFan Says:

It is okay to trade up a couple spots, I guess, because it may only cost us a 4th or a spot next draft, but if we try to get to 10-13, it will cost too much. I should have clarified that.

  48. Blake_bucsfan Says:

    Damn the typos be real.

    Here *he* is again

    *his* lust

    Jeez louise.

  49. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Also JJ, There’s no way trading away any amount of picks for dude coming off a college career with 766 Touches, and he is less than a year removed from Offseason Shoulder surgery.

Trading away top picks for any Running back in the 1st round would be incredibly short sided in a draft loaded with special talent that WILL be available in Rounds 2 and 3.

People that aren’t fanboys realize this.

  50. JJBucFan Says:

I’m a “fanboy” Blake but you have to be realistic. I’m not worried about his touches, I don’t know what film you watch but Cook dominates everybody, SEC, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, it doesn’t matter. We have no running backs!! we all know you don’t like Cook for some reason but if he is there you take him, I’m sure you would agree with that. I agree to not trade up but if he is falling to 15, 16- you might make a move, the reason being if he still there, then everyone else we may want will be gone. Again right now we have Peyton freaking Barber under contract and that is it. No way we bring Martin back. I would never take a TE in the 1st, I like Howard but for me we have too many needs to get him at 19, would rather have a LT or C at this point. WRs scare the crap out of me at 19. If we were top 10- Mike Williams is the choice, but after that it becomes a crap shoot. I do like Mixon a little later as I have stated, but only if we address WR in FA.

  51. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

Okay this what ima do for all y’all. Since many desire for one of best players entering this draft at position we clearly need. Ima go vacation for ya B dawg( I’ll refrain from saying what that B stands for to me) And check back on jbf draft night. And we all will see at the same time what envelop says once Rodger Goodell opens it. Ima do this once afterwards when it says Dalvin Cook don’t ever b@$! and groan about my sentiment ever again. Because I’ll never do y’all this solid ever again. Enjoy the none Dalvin rhetoric until draft night.

  52. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

JJ don’t mix word wit him. Dalvin took his girl and he bitter. See y’all draft night.

  53. Blake_bucsfan Says:

It’s funny that you’re trying to conceive this narrative that I was Dalvin Cook scorned me personally and that’s why I don’t like him.

That’s honestly ridiculous, The way you come to his aid, and sing his praises like no one else on this site, makes me feel like you have some special kinda don’t ask don’t tell warm and fuzzy feelings about the guy. Do you have his Poster taped up over your bed man? Lol stop with the silliness.

And JJ, We should have a shot at Getting D’onta Foreman, Samaje Perine, Joe Mixon(possibly), Wayne Gallman, and many others in rounds 2 or later man.

Rb not worth trading up for man. No two ways about it. When the draft is a crapshoot as it is.

  54. Blake_bucsfan Says:

My bud JoeyPoppems would tell you to keep your eyes peeled for Jamaal Williams this saturday at the senior bowl. RB position very deep in the 2017 draft.

  55. Pickgrin Says:

There are 3 highly rated safties that some/many are projecting to all be gone by pick 19. If 1 of them them – especially 1 that our scouts and GM feel really good about – is available when we pick – that HAS to be a position to strongly consider providing a big talent upgrade for…

  56. BigHogHaynes Says:

Calbucsfan: like Obama said don’t sit there with you thumb up your butt, if you got some knowledge bring it to the table and let’s debate ……..otherwise sit tight and shut up and get and stay out the way!!

  57. Blake_bucsfan Says:

@Pick, It would be sick if we ended up with Budda Baker. Kids ball skills and ferocity while tackling are both off the charts good. I think he would add a lot of good depth at Strong and Free safety, and eventually take over as the starter at either position.

  58. BigHogHaynes Says:

None of our running backs had a good year! BUILD A WALL!! Realist there are some pieces there……..but we need to continue to BUILD!

  59. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

I lied but ima honor what I said after this last post. Go to Buccs.com and find the section where it is asking the fans what position they feel the team should draft with the first pick. Go ahead I dare you😁. See what I realize is you people don’t speak for the entire fanbase you speak for jbf. Go look for yourselves. Welcome to Tampa… I’ll leave it for now.

  60. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And be sure an place your vote wouldn’t Jason Licht being pressured buy the position people are currently in favor of.

  61. JJBucFan Says:

Blake- I like all those guys you mentioned, I believe Cook will be gone. I have said it already, we may need 2 RBs this draft. FA isn’t wonderful for the position this year. I love what the falcons do and also the Titans and other teams 2 RBs that can run AND catch. I wouldn’t be sad to get Ramczyk in first and go back-to-back, RBs in 2 and 3, assuming Licht gets WRs in FA.

  62. Blake_Bucsfan Says:

Doesn’t surprise me that uninformed fans want dalvin cook. They dont know about anyone else!

Also if I thought for one second that a Gm weighted who the fans wanted as a serious consideration, i wouldnt want that guy as my Gm.

Luckily I know thats not who Jason Licht is. Or else we would have drafted manziel and not evans. Or mariota and not Jameis.

  63. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

😂You sound stupid like usual a good business man gives the people what they want smart guy. Especially when its a position of all need and BPA. Did you put ya vote inn blake???

  64. JJBucFan Says:

LOL okay draft guru, you must know better than all the experts who absolutely love Cook. It’s okay to have your opinions but to continue to insult people that disagree with you is just plain stupid. I agree with you on most of the players except Cook. I also agree we shouldn’t trade up for him, but to call people uninformed because they believe Cook is going to be successful in the NFL is just ignorant. Don’t take it personally someone disagrees with your opinions, I have watched Cook since high school and I graduated from FSU, I like his big play ability way more than any RB in this draft. I don’t get personal with people on this site because we are all Bucs fans together, just agree to disagree and move on.

  65. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

You don’t know s@$! about Jason Licht,we share a birth day date. Aquarius if you know anything about us you know we love bucking traditional wisdom dude.

  66. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

😂JJ I told you he bitter for a reason. The people are speaking boy.

  67. Nole on Sat- Bucc on Sun Says:

And d@$! That I ain going no where. I’m representin the people. Don’t like it scroll past.

  68. Blake_bucsfan Says:

All I know is I will be rolling on the Floor laughing when the Jaguars Pick Dalvin Cook.

I’ll be laughing because I know that some idiot just spent 4 months talking bout someone who we have no shot at Drafting.

And I’ll be laughing harder still because I know that same Dingus, Maroon, will be Crying his Eyes out. Because his mancrush didn’t get drafted.

  69. Blake_bucsfan Says:

By his team anyway, Hopefully when that Happens you’ll change your name to Nole on Sat Jag on Sun over at JoeJaguarsfan.com and I won’t have to listen to your idiocy any longer.

@JJ This same Kat NosBos just last night was talking about how OBJ isn’t a stud receiver. And That Matt Ryan only threw for 400 yards passing and got 5 touchdowns because Gb was too scared of the run to try and stop the pass… And thats the opinion you’re gonna trust man?

  70. Blake_bucsfan Says:

Oh Btw Nosbos I just voted in the Poll, and 54.3 percent of people want a wide receiver. So maybe they’re not as uninformed as I thought.

Not sure what you were trying to prove with that one. RB is Also tied with DE.

  71. Blake_bucsfan Says:

And safety is in second with 10 percent.

  72. Tom S. Says:

Was Lovie running the Bucs draft room?

No. That would be Licht. Lovie had control over the final 53, the draft was Licht’s domain. You think Licht, who interviewed for other GM positions around the league would take a job with TB where he couldn’t even have control over the draft?

And the Sims selection was more about a “speed in space” guy to fit Jeff Tedford’s offense. It wasn’t about getting the best player, but rather the best “fit” for what they wanted to do. Which is usually a failure waiting to happen and one of the worst draft selections (but not top-2) of Licht’s career.

Using the words “draft” and “science” in the same sentence is a mistake. While teams try to use data to help them find and rank players, they often take players that others rate lower because of scheme, team fit or team ideology. It’s very subjective.

The concept that you could objectively rate someone’s film is also a joke. Science is about replication and if you can’t reliably replicate the effect then you aren’t using science. The same player can run the same play at two different speeds for a million reasons and one year be an franchise cornerstone while the next be out of the league (see Freeman, Josh or Clayton, Michael).

Last i checked melvin gordon was supposed to be a man beast too coming out of college. He had 29 tds rushing in his final college season alone. He has not rushed for 1000 yards yet in the nfl. There is no guarantee cook will just dominate. Drafting a safety, olineman, wr or dline are all and should be possibilities for the bucs at 19. No need to trade up for a running back.

Melvin Gordon came out of Wisconsin which is basically the RB version of a UF WR.

Wisconsin has had some great players go to the NFL in recent years…JJ Watt, Joe Thomas, Russell Wilson, Travis Frederick. But for a run-oriented team who have had very successful college RB’s their RB’s haven’t translated. Michael Bennett? Bust. Ron Dayne? Bust. Montee Ball? Bust. All had great college careers running for offenses that featured strong run-blocking lines while playing in the weak Big10. The last stud NFL back from Wisconsin? Alan Ameche. Drafted in 1955.
