Bucs Sniff Old Wide Receiver

October 25th, 2016

natewashingtnLike any wise franchise hurting for receivers, the Bucs were out sniffing what’s on the street this week.

While Roddy White wasn’t on the workout buffet, another old guy with a lot of catches was.

Today, Nate Washington, 33, was reported to have had an official tryout with the Bucs. His career with the Steelers (2005-2008), Titans (2009-2014) and Texans (2015) left him with 458 catches and 44 touchdowns on his resumé.

He spent the 2016 preseason with the Patriots and had one catch for eight yards in two preseason games. The Patriots cut him in August and he’s been on the street ever since.

Washington had a hell of a career — and made a ton of cash — for an undrafted player.

Pretty impressive that he has the fire to keep playing. Joe’s all in favor of the Bucs exploring their options. A win at San Francisco and a career game by Russell Shepard hasn’t changed anything on the receiver front.

He could be kinda like a 2nd teacher to the younger group of Wide Recievers. The more experience the better.

  2. ninety9buc Says:

Is Reuben Randle still looking for work??

Much younger and has huge upside. Also played with Russel Sheppard.

  3. University of Seffner Says:

A 2 year deal would be great for him to sign if Jason Licht and Dirk Koetter agree to get him on the roster.

  4. ChaosRecon95 Says:

Doesn’t hurt to explore the options I suppose. I’d be more in favor of a trade of sorts

  5. dreambig Says:

Sounds like his day is past. I would rather have a fast unproven young guy who may be inconsistant than a really good old receiver who is slow and cant get open.

  6. canadian bucsfan Says:

I do agree we should be seeing what is out there for WR but I also think Cecil Shorts is gonna become a viable part of this offense.

  7. DB55 Says:

    #Nope

And if the Pats cut him HELLTOTHENAH. BELLI can get water out of a turnip. Did we not learn a lesson with Mankins?

  8. Capt. Blighe Says:

27 year old speedster Torrey Smith Please.

  9. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Great!

While we’re at it…..looking at older wide receivers

Why don’t we pull a Jon Gruden again and get Tim brown and Jerry Rice back together again?????

We can give Oakland fans some Dejvu

  10. Kobe Faker Says:

Last time played was during preseason. Doesnt gump ever learn? Now he is going to fit right in without getting injured?

Cecil shorts didnt have a full training camp and got injured immediately. Gump is going bild this team? Lol

Whats wrong with shepard starting and getting most of the snaps?

The oakland defensive coordinator is going to see the sf tape.when shep iz on the field, oak coord knows shep could go deep and nddd safety help. The oak coord knows when shep gets a screen/slant , the defense has to be aware of his run after catch ability. When me13 is on 1 side and shep the other side, they cant play 8 in the box and have to have both safeties to help out both sides

This isnt good? Shep numbers was 3x better than vjax with 3x less snaps and you dont have on the field?

IMO, we have the talent and players to make the playoffs this year, but our coach wont allow it to happen

    The pickins are slim

    Ever heard of Dontae Dye?

  13. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    dud

  14. Defense Rules Says:

I’m sure a lot of teams are sniffing Torrey Smith, but the Bucs have as good a chance as anyone of pulling off a trade. Right now we’re not really that bad off at WR, with ME13, Shep and Humphries, plus Cecil Shorts in the wings. Plus we’ve got Brate and several RBs who can catch the ball pretty well. Still believing that Murphy will be back in a couple of weeks.

  15. SB with Jameis Says:

44 TDs in 11 years. Hmm, I wonder how the math works out.

  16. unbelievable Says:

Well, if we don’t pull off a trade before week’s end, at least we’ll get 1 more game to look at Shep and Shorts, and evaluate if we really need to spend whatever picks SF wants in the trade this year, rather than waiting for the offseason.

I don’t think Shorts is a long term answer, but would like to see what Shep can actually do. Crazy to think he has stuck around through 3 different coaching regimes, as a special teamer only!

  17. Sledd Says:

I say give Shepherd a start and see what he can do…he’s got good hands and works hard…and makes plays

  18. SB with Jameis Says:

Great QBs make average WRs Good. I’m not worried

  19. unbelievable Says:

Damn SB, I’m getting crushed in pick’em these last 2 weeks. Gonna have to start rollin the dice!

  20. SB with Jameis Says:

Lol unbelievable. I only got 7 wins this weekend but I got 11 last weekend. I am stinking it up too

  21. KingBuc17 Says:

Come on JL, go get a WR2, one of the teams at 0-6, 1-5 even 2-4 have a number two that would grow with Jamies and really help ME13. Most rookie receivers take time to develop, other than the last couple drafts?

I like Hump Shepard and Shorts but we need speed!!!! They are all three different but are better suited for the slot, we want to take the lid off the back end. Enunwa, Cruz, Torrey Smith…do your job Jason L.

  22. Rojas Says:

Just read a report that the eagles are trying to trade a 3rd or 4th for Alshon Jefferey, if he agrees to a long term deal? I would be upset if we weren’t even interested. I thought other teams couldn’t work out a long term deal with a player who was franchised tagged by another team ? Or am I wrong.

  23. Syl Says:

See if you can swing a trade for some speed. See if Cordelle Patterson is available, or maybe Allen Robinson or Hurd. Stop acting like a 2nd rate franchise.

  24. SB with Jameis Says:

@ Rojas. I agree that Jeffery would be the best case signing. I just don’t think we have enough to offer Chicago in all reality while we are trying to build from the Ground up. I would love to see it happen though”

  25. Dr A Says:

How about trying to snag jameis’ old buddy Rashad Greene from Jax.

  26. Owlykat Says:

Shepard is a speedster! How do you think he got down the field so quick to make tackles as a special team ACE? And Murphy was Tebow’s favorite speedster with the Gators and he should be back soon. We don’t need to waste draft picks to get a speedster or to take an over the hill WR neither of which even know our offense. Cecil Shorts is quick and uses his quickness to get open and get YAK but he runs a 4.6 40 and apparently wasn’t in top form when we got him but he knows Koetter’s plays and can play slot if Hump is winded or gets hurt. Yes we need to draft another speedy receiver with great hands like Shepard for depth but we are set for now. Shep is tough as nails and will be a great number two receiver for us!

  27. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Sign him. I’ve always been a fan of his. We need depth in the worst way.

  28. DCBUCSFAN Says:

Chad Johnson & T.O. are on the street too!

  29. Bill Says:

We need to add a WR. We needed to add a WR on draft day. We didn’t, and we haven’t added one in the days that followed, unless Martini counts (and he doesn’t).

The argument that centers around the OAK game is shortsighted and stupid. Smith, Washington, or any other option won’t be the best option for the OAK game. Fine….who’s the best option for ATL, or CHI, or KC? We don’t even have viable practice squad options at WR. I think Licht has done a good job in general, but this situation at WR was predictable, and our current situation is ridiculous.

  30. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    FORGET A TRADE!

We’d just get fleeced in a trade. I say stick with what we have, but explore free agents for one year deals.

We should draft a WR within the first two rounds in the draft instead. Get a long term potential superstar to play opposite Mike Evans.

There’s no need to panic at this point. If the Bucs were a Superbowl contender, then maybe a trade might be justified, but Jason Licht has proven he cannot fix this team outside of the draft, so let’s NOT trade away his opportunities.

  31. 813bucboi Says:

    i’ll pass….stick with shep….GO BUCS!!!
