Jameis Frightens The NFL

September 23rd, 2016
Bring it!

Are teams scared of America?

It seems there may be a trend in the NFL: defenses are scared of America’s Quarterback, Pro Bowler Jameis Winston.

How else does one explain how NFL teams are blitzing Jameis more than Joe is doing shots on a Friday night at a sandy, hopping St. Pete Beach establishment?

Per the solid digging of ESPN’s Jenna Laine, no quarterback in the NFL has faced more blitzes than Jameis.

Interesting fact I just discovered: Jameis Winston has faced more blitzes (five or more pass rushers) per dropback than any other quarterback in the league at 45.2 percent. Had 55.6 percent in Week 2 alone. The next closest last week was Aaron Rodgers with 46.7 percent. That’s a lot of pressure!

To Joe, this means teams are scared of Jameis. Only a defense concerned about a quarterback will expose itself by throwing the kitchen sink at the guy.

Teams that don’t think a quarteback can beat them will not blitz much, if at all.

That is a pretty interesting stat. First thing that comes to mind is that opposing D coordinators think they can lock down Bucs receivers if they are blitzing that much.

  2. ARGH_M8E Says:

Maybe some F’n speed @ the WR position would help…. What a concept!

  3. Warrenfb12 Says:

Or it just works against him. He needs to be able to expose teams by hitting the open man when they send blitz. It’s not like our o-line isn’t blocking it up.

  4. Fire the glazers Says:

Hopefully it pays devidends. I’m personally exhausted from watching our #1 overall pick embarrass himself with multiple interception games in which he cannot seem to pull is out of a rut.

  5. ndog Says:

They blitz us because we have big slow wide receivers that take a long time to get open. They are betting they get to Jameis before our slow wide outs get open. This is simple until we can either get open quickly or hurt them with YAC they will not stop. It is a receivers problem and even though I think Licht has done a good job but he messed up by not bringing some speed in at receiver.

  6. Bob in Valrico Says:

    kind of a reach Joe.
If you drop back 52 times and your running game isn’t that effective, then the
smart thing to do is pressure the QB.In addition there was good man coverage on the back end, freeing up more attackers to blitz.

  7. Bob in Valrico Says:

the other reason we were blitzed so much is we got behind early and became
too predictable since the passing game was the only way to catch up.

  8. Kobe Faker Says:

    This is a copycat league

The nfl defenses will use this formula to get to jameis and beat koetters offsense

Koetters offense takes too long to develop downfield with our lumbering big tight end type recievers

Defenses will play press man2man defense at the LOS and take away tampas screen game

Stack the box and blitz all day long

Koetter doesnt use rubs, legal picks and crossing routes to freeup our recievers near the los

We dont have the type of recoebers and playcalling to beat yhe pnslaught of blitzes

What jameis faces nonstop is 8 man fronts with extra defender trying to take him down looking at the back jersey of his recievers going down

Thats why i always thought this offense was the worst for jameis. Thank god most teams have bad defenses and cant play this way

  9. Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Yes, maybe they are scared of Jameis. But I think it also has to do with the success teams have had blitzing us. Once the Bucs get better at making them pay for blitzing, then teams will blitz us much less.

  10. Bob in Valrico Says:

another thing that may have stymied passing game somewhat, was the Stocker injury. Our receiving tight ends hade to play more of blocking role, taking a target off the table for Jameis.

  11. Waterboy Says:

Agree with ndog and TackleBlockWin. If you can’t make teams pay when they blitz they’re going to keep doing it. They’ll give up a checkdown pass all day but until you can burn them with big plays when they blitz they’re going to keep coming.

  12. BigHogHaynes Says:

ndog: I approve that message + 14 games to play 8 more games to win! Say it like you mean it! Go Bucs!!

  13. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Many of these reasons sound plausible….but here’s one that no one has suggested.

How about our Oline is so good that the only way defenses can get any pressure on Jameis is to blitz.

  14. Destro44 Says:

I think we need to look at the teams we played as well. The Cards blitz everyone, it’s what they do. The Falcons have no pass rush from their front for and are forced to blitz. Tack on the fact that we spent 90% of the Cards game in known passing situations and these numbers go up. Tell you what 2 games is far too small a sample. After week 10 let’s look at the numbers and see if there is a theme.

  15. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

And we can expect alot more of it with our all pro RB being out. And until Jameis can show that he can beat the blitz there’s no reason to believe there gonna let up. It’s monkey see, monkey do in this league, if other teams see something that works there gonna run it until u show that u can stop it. And they also know if u give Jamies enough time back there he’s very capable of carving u up. But this shouldn’t be suprising because every young QB goes thru this until they show that they can make a defense pay for blitzing. I think our line held up fairly well in AZ it was just one of those days were Jameis was completely off, wich every young QB is gonna have every now and again. He’s still very young and learning wich we tend to forget because of his “veteran like” leadership that he provides.

  16. Shadow man Says:

They blitzed Americas qb, Tom Brady, bc they fear him and he tears them apart. Same with Peyton or Aaron. A truly smart qb finds the open man. Jameis can’t seem to do that when he’s blitzed.

  17. Bob in Valrico Says:

Funny but I saw Jameis throw behind our big lumbering tight end type recievers quite a bit.Jameis needs to be on target to whatever WR is on the field. Trent Dilfer analyzed his pass attempts and on WDAE he said Jameis had
    15 off target passes.
Also Mike Evans gave Jameis 4 good looks in the endzone in the last two games. Its up to Jameis to improve his 50% accuracy to Evans in the endzone.
In the last game Koetter stated that Evans had inside position and the play was a post route on the interception by Peterson.

  18. Tampa Tony Says:

Or it could be that defensive coordinators know if they pressure a turnover machine like Jameis they can get a pick 6 or 2

  19. BuccaneEric75 Says:

I agree with Bob at 7:01. They were going to tee off on Winston once we fell behind and had to throw every play.

  20. Stpetebucsfan Says:

TBBF for the win! Beat me to it bro. We may have the best Oline in the league and I think that is a factor as well.

Although I do accept Joe’s point as well.

  21. Stpetebucsfan Says:

BTW Here’s another thought. Yeah it’s a copycat league and I would normally agree that teams will keep blitzing until we beat it with regularity.

HOWEVER…against the Rams that might not be the case because they have one of the top front fours in the league. Quite honestly I do not know Jeff Fisher’s tendencies. I leave that to Joe or one of you better informed posters to give us what to expect from Fisher….is he known as a blitzing coach?

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    ARGH_M8E Says
“Maybe some F’n speed @ the WR position would help…. What a concept!”

Nice try, but you are wrong.

Every Elite Quarterback in history has faced the issue of blitzing and learned to overcome it. This is just another step in Winston’s learning process. Speed is nice. Accuracy is better.

Winston has a lot to prove. He’s still young, still learning and developing, but he isn’t there yet.

  23. Negative Jeff Says:

Not scared. Not respect for our skill positions. If JW was accurate teams would stop blitzing him. Until that is corrected, and I don’t think it can truly be, defenses will continue to Blitz JW. He needs to be more clutch under pressuer and that means being accurate.

  24. BigStinky Says:

Why would any team be scared of Jameis? He has thrown more INT’s than any other QB since the beginning of 2015 and that’s probably why they blitz. Our OL does a good job of pass protection and teams may have to blitz to bring pressure. It takes JW a few passes to get into a rhythm normally so why let him settle down and start to make plays? Keep pressure on him and maybe he NEVER gets into a groove like the Arizona game. Good Luck BUCS vs. RAMS!
