Familiar Names Fill Bucs’ Practice Squad

September 4th, 2016

Jason Licht stayed close to home, but added one intriguing newcomer.

No, Kenny Bell didn’t get a phone call, but a lot of guys known to the hardest of hardcore Bucs fans did.

Today, the Buccaneers rolled out their initial practice squad for 2016 — for now.

The only foreign name is Jeremy Butler.

WR  Freddie Martino
WR  Jeremy Butler
OL      Josh Allen
LB      Micah Awe
LB    Josh Keyes
RB      Peyton Barber
RB     Russell Hansbrough
CB      Javien Elliot
C       Ben Gottschalk
S       Isaiah Johnson

Butler caught 31 passes with the Ravens last year, which was more than Russell Shepard, Adam Humphries and Evan Spencer, guys currently on the roster.

A 6-2, 213 pounds, Butler was an undrafted free agent of the Ravens in 2014, but spent the season on injured reserve. In 2015, after the seven weeks on the practice squad, Butler was promoted and shined.

Somewhat interesting that the Bucs have two running backs on the practice squad. With only three on the roster and no fullback, that’s a good idea.

Wait what happened to Jonathan Krause?

  2. Mr. T Says:

One name not listed is Dan Vitale who was claimed by the Bills

Wait what happened to Jonathan Krause?

    Ahem. Self-explanatory.

  4. Mr. T Says:

Figured Barber would land on the PS, glad he did.

  5. tmaxcon Says:

Butler will not be on the practice squad very long at all. learn the the plays and calls then call up. he will be a contributor this year.

  6. Mr. T Says:

    tmaxcon

Agreed, if he demonstrates the same hands and play making ability here as he did in Bal they’ll make room for him on the 53 before long.

  7. Brett Says:

Too bad about Vitale. maybe he won’t stick and we can get him back. he really seems like a developmental player. No way he is roster ready.

Kenny Bell is probably done with the Bucs. I think they have seen enough that they don’t want to waste a valuable practice squad position on him.

The Bucs could have drafted Rashaad Greene, Jameis favorite target at FSU and FSU’s all time leading receiver in the 5th round. I know they needed speed that year, but ironically this year we need a slot receive and Greene could have been that. I bet Greene has a solid career and may be a Wes Welker type.

  8. K2 Says:

I’m not a Kenny Bell fan but he was waved injury…so he might not be available.

  9. Rrsrq Says:

I called Jeremy Butler yesterday, read the files. I really didn’t call it, I just put his name on JBF and obviously Jason Licht read it and called the local guy with skills to come on home. Hope he learns the plays and find himself dressing on Sundays

  10. HIRE JIMBO Says:

Reporters in Baltimore are angry that he was let go. It was probably because he is not a big special teams guy. Good hands, good size, idk about his speed. But he was the leading receiver for Baltimore in pre season. I kinda lo Ike the signing plus he wants to be here. Still want to kick the tires on Shorts, and if we bring in Sitton for a visit don’t let him leave without a contract.

  11. Kevin Says:

Cecil shorts cut by texans, theyre deep at reciever he a speed in space guy and return guy

  12. grafikdetail Says:

even though he came up looking very dizzy i didn’t see any real contact to the head on the play that Kenny Bell got the concussion on

  13. Mike Johnson Says:

Good for our Bucs. Finally they are getting the message…We need to Win!!
Krause, Bell, Vitale are all not on the practice squad because…they cannot help us win…period. Not now and not tomorrow. WE NEED BALLERS! To hell with…favorites. Favorites keep YOU..in the celller! We need mean mean who are tough and want to win.

  14. ninety9buc Says:

    Wow!!
I really can’t believe the Ravens released Butler. This kid can play and has experience playing in some big games with Baltimore and being clutch. Don’t let him sit on the practice squad too long Dirk.

  15. salish_seamonster Says:

I’m a little surprised that Luke Rhodes didn’t go to the practice squad. Did he get picked up by somebody else?

  16. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    Salish..no on Luke..surprised myself..

Can Jeremy get picked up by another team if the Bucs just keep him on practice squad though?

  17. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Lifeofabucfan

They would have to put him on their active roster……not their practice squad…..I don’t know if we would get some notice on that so that we could protect him by placing him on our active roster…..I don’t think so.

  18. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I’m surprised we haven’t picked up a couple of other players….we must be pretty happy with who we have…..it isn’t over yet though.

  19. Kobe Faker Says:

    paul turner wr/kr philly

  20. Issic Haggins Says:

How can you employ all these scouts and 9 out of 10 practice squaders are guys the bucs have had around ………. The idea is to have the best talent not the best comfort level??? Btw Dexter McCluster makes the bucs better immediately !!!

  21. HIRE JIMBO Says:

Dex is my sisters baby daddy, I talked to my sister and he wants to be here. He’s a tampa native. Also the bears have signed Josh Sitton to a 3 year deal. At least he didn’t go to the Aints

  22. Fire the glazers Says:

    What about Luke Rhodes???

  23. HIRE JIMBO Says:

This Texas vs Notre Dame game is CRAZY

  24. PRBucFan Says:

What a damn shame Luke Rhodes got the snub over Keyes.

  25. Gigglypuff Says:

Rhodes was decent but very slow. Martino will be on the 53 by mid season.

  26. MikeBelt Says:

I agree we need DexMc. Why aren’t we picking him up to return kicks, Someone just signed Devin Hester to return kicks? Shepard or DexMc? Cut Cross as we have stocker and put him on the PS. So when we trade a package of Glennen and ASJ to the first team to loose a starting QB….
Shoot we should have given them to Minn for a second and fourth

  27. KingBuc17 Says:

Are we really content with our top 53? Why are we not signing anyone? I bet we are waiting until after the first game to see who goes down?

I love our D line now, finally!!!

  28. RCS Says:

Someone is going to sign Josh Allen off our Practice Squad…..

  29. orlbucfan Says:

Thank gawd, Barber is on our PS. Hope nobody snags him.

  30. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Excited to see if this Butler kid is gonna contribute in the regular season. He could be a diamond in the rough. Maybe this year’s version of Humphries?? I’d be cool with that.

  31. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I was really hoping Vitale would go on the practice squad.

  32. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I told everyone he would get snatched up. The Bills just got a future pro bowler.

  33. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    HireJimbo..woah!..cool!!

Thanks TBBF..I dreamt last night Justin was taken by Cleveland…lol…snatched right out of PS..lol…

  34. Mike Cannon Says:

Baltimore is buzzing with what a mistake losing Jeremy Butler was. He is a very impressive receiver. I’m concerned that they could wise up and grab him back off our practice squad. We are far less likely to lose Spencer on the PS. Any word on the Bucs intending to protect him by putting him on the roster?

  35. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

I hate it for Kenny Bell but if I’m honest he didn’t do enough to earn a spot. We still need to pick up another WR. Hate we missed out on Justin Hunter
