“Tough Guy”

January 25th, 2016

Mike Mayock discusses Dirk Koetter.

For nearly a decade, Bucs coach Dirk Koetter has been an NFL offensive coordinator. Everywhere he has been he a degree of success.

Hell, Koetter even made David Garrard look like a decent quarterback.

So Saturday, Joe chatted about Koetter with Mike Mayock, after he finished the NFL Network call of the East-West Shrine Game at The Fruitdome in St. Petersburg.

In short, Mayock said what separates Koetter from other coaches is his no-bull style.

JoeBucsFan: You’ve seen Dirk Koetter in Jacksonville. You’ve seen him in Atlanta. You’ve seen him with the Bucs. What makes him a special coach?

Mike Mayock: I think his attention to detail. Even though he is an old school tough guy, players like him and respect him because he is no BS. I think he is a straight up tough guy but he is honest and players respond to that.

First off, Joe liked when Mayock said Koetter is a detailed guy. For someone who had a 150-page notebook on how his program runs, that’s not just detailed, but organized as well.

Joe also liked Mayock calling Koetter is a no BS kind of guy. That came out in Koetter’s press conferences last year. Ask a question and you will get a direct answer. It may not be pretty and it may not be politically correct, but it will be blunt and it will be honest.

It isn’t just players that like those type of responses.

    hummmmmmmmmmm………………..

we’ll see what he says every week if the bucs lose…….if should be a helluva lot better response than the lethargic Lovie responses.

  2. Bucco Brice Says:

the end of “simple as that” press conferences….hallelujah!!!

“I didn’t want to put points on the board.” – Lovie Smith

  4. Pick6 Says:

lovie had big binders and loved details too. they did a 3 million word story on his love of details on the official site when he was hired. i’m more excited about the fact that dirk has appeared to win in different ways based on what his players are good at doing

  5. CreamsicleBananaHammock Says:

I watched every one of his Wednesday press conferences because I’m just obsessed like that and you can’t help but like the guy.

Will he be a successful HC? Who knows. You really never know. Hell, Cleveland fired Bill Bellicheck & Nick Saban. But I really like the guy and I know Jameis loves him (and Bajakian) and in Jameis I trust

  6. pelbuc Says:

Big question is will his style actually change the players’ attitude and performance, namely ME and ASJ. As for the defense, that will take a miracle.

  7. Mike Johnson Says:

All talk here. Lets have less verbalization and more..implementation. No excuses golden boy Koetter. You are on the clock. WIN or join your 2 yr compadres fishing off of the St Pete Bridge!

  8. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Part of developing a successful team is to have the ability to buy yourself enough time…..Morris, Schiano & Smith didn’t have it…..in particular Lovie Smith.
At least with Koetter the losing will be easier along the way…..yes, I said the losing because we will have some losses. I think that same charisma displayed in the pressers is experienced by the players….hopefully the fans & players will buy in and the arrows will be all pointed upward.
I like that the new OC apparently doesn’t like to win 10-6……

  9. BKNYfootballhead Says:

For Christ sake, the “PC” term is being used all too frequently and oftenly out of context. Cursing by football coaches isn’t a new concept. Joe, you’re posting too much political nonsense these days.

  10. Howard Cosell Says:

    Help Howard out here:
What kind of people WANT political correctness?
To Howard it seems like synonym for wanting to be lied to.
What kind of people don’t want the truth? Howard has trouble
wrapping his arms around the concept of wanting a water-down,
nicey-nice, pus*ified version of the truth.
The real truth is going to smack you upside of the head sooner
or later anyway. Might as well start dealing with it.

    Anyhow. Howard loves Koetter.

    Speaking for Pablo
    n
“Pablo isn’t PC…..Pablo is the least PC on JBF……Pablo can take it…..lay the language on Pablo….Pablo is an American citizen and Pablo loves America but Pablo thinks America is going down the PC toilet. Pablo knows that what Lovie really wanted to say when he said “It’s as simple as that”……It was…”You can kiss Lovie’s a$$…becasue Lovie will do what Lovie f-kin’ wants to do and if Lovie had more sons….they would be on the Buc payroll too”

  12. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Tyrod Taylor over Jameis for a probowl birth?……I put this under the WTF category.

  13. BUC55 Says:

This could be the best head coach and overall staff the bucs have ever had. Period. What’s not to like? It’s no guarantee we’re going to the super bowl but at least there is a group of real leaders in place now.

  14. BuccaneEric75 Says:

    Pablo, LOL!

  15. ManzielMadness Says:

A little off topic but love Charlie Campbell’s 3 round mock:
    1. S Jalen Ramsey
    2. DE Carl Nassib
    3. CB Zack Sanchez

Very solid if you ask me..

  16. BKNYfootballhead Says:

Howard doesn’t seem to understand the use and context of political correctness.
    Lies and truth?

  17. GhostofSchiano Says:

As long as I do not hear “We are getting better every week, we’re almost there” etc.etc,etc.

  18. Kevin Says:

Funny how there are so many fans that I see and hear that or so ready to see cuter fail. Its amazing how many people are saying he BETTER get it done in two seasons or he has to GO!!!

Here’s the thing, if Lovie had actually ADJUSTED and not been so loyal to his backup players and relative coaches, say he went down swinging and showed some improvement and played the better players that the team was invested in and tried some different things with his scheme, than I’d say hell yeah the man needed another season, even if they finished with the same record. Problem is he did the same thing week after week,

Schiano did the same thing week after week. Its when you see the coaching has become stale and predictable you can’t stand behind that.

Koeteer brought a good offense to Tampa in his first year with a rookie quarterback. Lovie failed at his second head coaching gig, running a defense he was a “GURU” with. I am disappointed to see so many people out there not really sounding like they want to give Koetter a chance.

  19. Buc1987 Says:

    Pablo…lmao!

  20. Buc1987 Says:

Kevin…I’m going to bust out every excuse they used for Lovie and use them for Koetter during the season.

  21. Tbbucs3 Says:

Tired of guys like Steven White using everything in there power to defend Lovie and fail to realize Dirk is the better coach for our team. Our franchise will be built around Jameis so we went and locked in the best coach for him. Our “defensive guru” showed us that he can’t coach in today’s game and especially can’t evaluate talent. What did Lovie teach Jameis about quarterbacking? I’ll credit Lovie some for limiting Jameis’s turnovers because he says the word “takeaways” 100 times a day.

  22. StPeteBucsFan Says:

    Testing

  23. The Buc Realist Says:

    @Tbbucs3

Thats the Tampa 2 mafia!!! Luckily with this John Lynch ring of honor thing, they have been busy patting each other on the back and telling stories of how great 199X was!!!

But they will be back to their slanderous ways!!!

  24. DB55 Says:

Real buc fans know we’re on the verge. #realtalk

  25. Joe Dunn Says:

I love this hire . . . but Joe, you gotta find a better pic of the new coach!

  26. Rojas Says:

Jameis Winston to the Pro Bowl ! Replace’s Tom Brady.

  27. Bucincrazy Says:

Hey Joe What’s Up With Famous Making The Pro bowl

  28. KevinM Says:

O look a source close to joe has told him Jameis winston is going to be eating pineapple

  29. tdtb2015 Says:

    Pineapple for America’s QB!!!!!

  30. LifeOfABucFan Says:

    LMAO @ Pablo!

  31. Dave Says:

Watch the Broncos pass rush destroy Brady –
It should be a no brainer to the Bucs – get Mario Williams and draft a DE and CB in the first two rounds !!
Grab another WR in rounds 3-4 too

  32. BigHogHaynes Says:

KOETTER gets the same treatment you guys gave LOVIE: But I say if he don’t win 9 games next year fire him and move on, he should be able to do that with a revamped O-line, America’s QB and the Back Stabber making home run draft picks and making big FA moves 9 win should be easy!
