Jason Licht Speaks

March 31st, 2015

jaso licht 0826

Joe has the full audio of Bucs general manager Jason Licht in his post-Florida State pro day this afternoon. Naturally, the entire session dealt with questions about Bucs first round draft pick Jameis Winston’s performance.

What you cannot hear in the audio, and obviously cannot see, is the s(p)it-eating grin Licht had pasted on his face. Even when he tried, Licht simply could not stop smiling. He damn near broke his face trying not to smile at one point.

Audio courtesy of Joe’s good friends at WDAE-AM 620.

Is he laughing with us or at us?

  2. robert 9 Says:

reminds me of crank yankers. i’ve got mail…….yeah!

  3. The Other Side of the Coin Says:

    He’s laughing at the haters.

  4. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

    jameis

  5. Stpetebucsfan Says:

He could care less about “haters” or Mariota fans. He’s a positive person why would he be stupid enough to worry about haters or chicken littles.

He’s happy because he thinks there’s a franchise QB in the Bucs future.

  6. David Says:

Hey Winston fans, go check out what the rest of the world has to say in the comment section of this article on Yahoo.

    “Shutdown Corner”
Jameis Winston’s appearance at FSU pro day weigh-in gets attention

  7. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

After I get done reading Yahoo comments, I will go check out AOL and ESPN. All three are the creme de la creme of commentariats.

Or, I can just sit back and wait for the Winston pick knowing that no comment on any website is going to affect who the Bucs pick.

  8. David Says:

Oh yeah, here’s another rid-bit for the Winston Lovers.

Bucs to Hold Private Workout with Duke QB Anthony Boone

Hmmmmm, another spread quarterback like Mariota. Could it be that they are going to draft another spread type quarterback in a later round to back-up Mariota? Glennon is trade bait if so. This way they can run the same offense if Mariota gets injured. This is also not the only other spread type quarterback they have worked out either. MARIOTA!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Celly Says:

honest question for the people that don’t want Winston…and i’d like a real answer here:

Since the card hasn’t been turned in yet and we truly don’t know who the pick will be, what will you do IF Winston is selected and wins many games in his future while leading us to the playoffs?

It’s a genuine question i would love to hear a genuine answer to.

  10. robert 9 Says:

    this one may me laugh

“Don’t think it really matters as I’m sure the Florida Dept of Corrections has uni that will fit.”

  11. robert 9 Says:

    @celly

i might watch the playoff game, might even tune in if it’s very convenient on a Sunday and on tv at a restaraunt, but I won’t be renewing my NFL package to root for him or the bucs if they take him. I’ll wait for him to bust, and if he doesn’t, well I’ll be a dolphins fan by then anyway.

and IF they’re in the playoffs, I’ll be rooting for the opposing team….probably the one glennon is on 🙂

  12. tval Says:

Ill take your spot, robby..go cheer on tanny, you wee baby..Waaaaaaaaah..hahaha!

  13. Skyline Crew Says:

You idiots the pick is Jameis. You dumb people are going to have to find a new team when we take Winston. All you racist haters. God you all are dumb. Winston is the pick.

  14. Lord Cornelius Says:

    Joe

Just want to thank you allowing people to comment as they want; whether they agree with you or not.

As an experiment; I’ve essentially posted some disagreements with a few articles on profootballtalk. I didn’t name call. I didn’t slander. I didn’t use swear words. I simply cited facts and why I found the article to be misleading and why I felt the writer was purposefuly being intellectually dishonest.

They were deleted every single time. (5 different comments). Not sure how they violate ANY rules of their website outside of pointing out flaws in their articles or writers / or pointing out how it seems obvious they are pumping a certain anti-winston agenda.

It’s like they literally are pumping an agenda and proving it to me by not allowing comments that disorient that agenda. It’s a sad era of media.

  15. Love and Warrick Dunn Says:

Because, when you want to escape a team whom you think makes poor front office decisions, the logical team to switch to is…..the Dolphins.

This has been a day of good humor. Thanks to all.

  16. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

In for a penny, in for a pound.

Picks will be high, fumbles will happen. Still…the pick will be Jameis Winston.

Here are the lies & truths on today’s Pro Day

Flabby – simply not true. As someone who is looking for faults in the man, I was watching for the flab, and it simply was not there. He is slim and trim. Will he remain that way? I don’t know. But anyone saying he was “flabby” today is a total liar.

Inaccurate – True. His passes were off much of the time. However, it is important to point out that they were trying to simulate a pass rush at the same time…more so than any QB I’ve seen at a Pro Day. Accuracy is going to need work, no doubt, but all QBs need work in that area before they are drafted.

Too Many Passes – I liked it. Sure, he could have thrown 65 passes like all the other QBs, and taken less risk, but he wanted to be challenged. It showed character in my book.

Incompletions – 92 of 102. People are looking at the 10 and saying how bad it is. I disagree. We’re talking 1 in 10+ passes. And not all were his fault. I’m not making excuses, but I don’t think people are being fair.

    What I liked
He showed better pocket presence, even if his balance was off a bit. The media is telling us he shouldn’t have done all that, but it allowed us to see a more clear picture.

I liked how he treated the WRs. He offered them drink…actually got it for them. I saw him talking to one who had a drop…he was not jumping his case, he was talking about HOW to make the catch next time.

All in all, no matter what the bashers are saying (and I have been considered one), no matter what the media says (who believe in playing it safe), I actually enjoyed the Pro Day and the interview.

  17. Drew Says:

Answer… I’ll be the 1st to admit I was wrong in my assessment of Winston. On the other hand, If he tanks (bust) I’ll be 1st to state I told you so.

  18. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I like Mariota, but anyone who doesn’t think Winston will be the pick is lying to themselves.

I’d give it a 97 percent chance of being Winston, 2 percent chance of being Mariota, and .5 percent chance each of another pick or a trade down.

  19. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Drew

    LOL. We’ll be in a race. 😉

  20. Celly Says:

@robert, I don’t much care for you, but I will say that i appreciate you giving an honest answer. sucks to lose a fellow fan in that way, but it is what it is

@Drew, will you proclaim him a bust after one year or will you give him at least 2-3 years?

I appreciate you two for actually answering my questions rather than spewing off some rhetoric *cough* Skylin Crew *cough*.

@Bonzai, nice to see you finally coming around… you can always root for Mariota, but just remember where your heart lies. lol.

  21. JBuc Says:

Robert 9: can you just leave already? As an FSU grad and Bucs fan I certainly hope they draft Jameis. However, if they do not I will not act like a two year and run around threatening to be a fan of another team. I live in Tampa and am a Bucs fan. My only expectation of any professional team I cheer for is to win. If they draft Jameis I hope it is because we know he can help the Bucs become winner ps. If they draft Mariota or anyone else I am hoping for the same thing.

If you your panties in a bunch because you know something about Jameis that the rest of us don’t and can’t take it anymore than just leave you big pus.

  22. ColoradoBuc Says:

    Ditto

  23. Aceofaerospace Says:

Celly, I have always preferred Mariota over Winston. Still not convinced this is all smoke and mirrors and Lovie pulls the “safe” card on draft day. That being said, if Winston is drafted, he has a clean slate with me. A lot smarter people than me and people with a lot more information than me are making the decision. Until he gives me a reason not to be, I will be one of his biggest fans. Nothing would make me happier than to hear a million “I told you so’s” from Joe and the likes if Winston performs (for the Bucs) as Joe expects.

  24. WalkdaPlank Says:

Jesus Christ, were there this many Johnny articles during his pro day (though to be better tha Jameis’)? From somebody who doesn’t value pro days that much? I like Jameis and all and will be happy to have him, but DAMN.

  25. WalkdaPlank Says:

*thought to be better than Jameis’

  26. Lord Cornelius Says:

lol @ David. In the very article he links; you can read that Anthony Boone ran a slower 40 than Winston at the combine. Sounds like a Mariota mold to me!!

You guys are really really desperate.

  27. Eric Says:

Oh no first Mariota Joe, now Robert 9.

Both are switching teams if we draft Jameis.

What are we going to do without them??????

    It’s heartbreaking.

  28. Skyline Crew Says:

I’ve already answered that question several times Celly. Sorry you don’t remember.

  29. Joe Says:

Jesus Christ, were there this many Johnny articles during his pro day (though to be better tha Jameis’)?

Joe was not in College Station for Johnny’s pro day. Joe was in Tallahassee for Winston’s pro day and it was before and after pretty common knowledge Winston will likely be quarterback for the Bucs next year. Why on earth would Joe not write about that? Geez.

  30. robert 9 Says:

yall won’t have to worry about missing me. they’ll trade back in the draft.

  31. TheDon Says:

    @Robert

Theyll trade back? Based on what? Just your factless opinion? you need to stop. You dont even beleive the crap youre posting

  32. WalkdaPlank Says:

Johnny also had a very high chance of being a Buccaneer as well. In fact, the Bucs could’ve drafted him, TWICE! Half as many articles for his pro day in which everybody wouldn’t shut up about how good he was and in pads. For Jameis, Joe is even seeking out an opinion from somebody named Jim Miller to pump out another article. Next, Shaun King.

Do what you want Joe, I’m just surprised.

  33. WalkdaPlank Says:

To stop being a fan of any team simply because that team adds a new player you don’t like is asinine.

  34. JBuc Says:

I’m curious if the Robert 9’s, Skyline Crew, SadSuperSam and the rest of you anti Jameis crew are Warren Sapp fans?

  35. tval Says:

    Good stuff, drew!!

  36. robert 9 Says:

    warren paid for the P

not the same as what jameis did, not by a longshot

  37. Skyline Crew Says:

    JBuc,

Nope. I tolerated Sapp, but I liked Brooks, Alstott, and Lynch from that team.

  38. JBuc Says:

Met Sapp on many occasions and found him to be one of the biggest a holes I have ever seen. Personally watched him treat kids like dirt and talk to fans like trash. While I hated having him in the community I would take him any Sunday. If you can tolerate him and not Winston than you have issues.

  39. Skyline Crew Says:

Never said I couldn’t tolerate Winston. See the Homers think that if you prefer Mariota that you automatically hate Winston. Not true. Yes, there are some who hate Winston. I personally do not. I have also said with Glennon on the team the pick would be Winston. Doesn’t make sense to draft Mariota with Glennon unless we do some sort of draft day trade or draft 2 QBs.

  40. Eric Says:

He said near the end that they are going to put Jameis through a private workout next week in Tally.

I think they are doing the same with Marcus next Tuesday.

After that, what’s left to do?

He also said Jameis was in great shape. Myth number 1000 debunked.

  41. JBuc Says:

Skyline Crew, I may have lumped you in with a couple of the anti Winstonites that have professed to become fans of different teams if Winston was selected. My mistake. Anyone that would do that is a tool.

  42. Skyline Crew Says:

Agreed, if someone leaves because of a player that is stupid. Unless, you become a fan of said player and follow them. My Brother-n-law followed Peyton from college to the Colts and to Denver. I could see people doing that with Winston if the Bucs don’t take him. Same as I’m sure there are a lot of Hawaiians who will follow Mariota.

  43. Jameis Winston’s Pro Day | Buccaneers Bay Says:

[…] Tampa Bay GM Jason Licht was grinning from ear to ear talking about him. Winston made 102 throws during the work out, throwing aspirin tablets for over […]

  44. DallasBuc Says:

Even with all the Winston consensus among the talking heads I cannot shake this sneaking suspicion that incompetent Lovie Smith and his lapdog GM are going to pick Mariota. Maybe it is just a Pavlovian fear and paranoia after the litany of atrocious personnel decisions made by tweedle dee and tweedle dum in 2014.
    Hope I am wrong.

  45. brandonbucfan Says:

Robert 9 is another one of those people I feel sorry for
because he only does what he does because he has no life and probably no on e likes him and he is starved for attention. Sooo..the easiest thing is to ignore him. Every time I see his post I will stop reading thany more posts on that subject. Maybe if Joe starts to realize he is losing clicks by keeping this jerk on he will finally ban him.

  46. 87LikesFreeJerseys Says:

    Cause Barney Rubble(Licht) says so…

  47. WS99 Says:

    Dallasbuc

I feel EXACTLY the same way.

  48. Stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Celly

I’ve already stated I’m cool with Fameis. I started off preferring Mariota for on field reasons but you guys have won me over. Having said that if they shock us all and go for MM I’d be ok with that as well. Basically I’m one of the few who still has faith in Lovie and Licht and their staff.

Totally hypothetical question just for shts and grins.

IF the Browns offered a straight up trade…Johnny Football for MG8 would you take it?

  49. DallasBuc Says:

WS99- remember how effusive they were in praise of Manziel last year leading up to the draft? Then you find out later they never even considered drafting him. This feels a little like that. Hardly any public interest in Mariota. It could just be that they are thrilled to be in a position to take Winston but could also be uneccesary deception. I am really looking forward to watching Winston line up behind center this fall in Tampa. Don’t screw it up!

  50. cmurda Says:

@Robert 9. No, Warren didn’t pay for it. That’s what got him in the mess he got into. Secret Service didn’t pay for it either. What morons! Look, if that’s your thing, fine. Pay for it first and complain later.

  51. mikeh Says:

Winston was asked who is the best player in draft? Winston answer I am! ya ok this clown is as full of himself as these Winston lovers on here! don’t remember rg3 or luck or any first round QB ever so high on himself. wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  52. mikeh Says:

cocky son of a beatch!!! has bust written all over him. and really accurate under pressure not! and get used to throwing those picks behind this offensive line bozo!

  53. lurker Says:

    remember:

Lovie Smith: Not ‘erroneous assumption’ that Winston goes No. 1

  54. delson Says:

Licht was probably smiling so hard because he knows the media believes they know who we’re picking. Mariota is the pick.

  55. tickrdr Says:

    @Celly:

I would cheer loudly, and would buy playoff tickets, if we got a home game.
Have to admit, I enjoyed watching Mariucci and Jameis Winston on the GameChangers show on NFL Network.
Personally, I’m still worried about the # of INTs. I’ve watched his highlight reel, and it is easy to be impressed with the throws, but I am even more impressed with the size of the pockets and the lack of pressure that is present on
~ 80-90% of those throws. It will be interesting to see how he does, if he gets as little time as McCown/Glennon had. Any predictions for his rookie stats?

BTW, I also watched the show about the 2006 Rose Bowl tonight.
Matt Leinart — USC — Heisman winner — National Champion — 35-1 record
    Vince Young — UT — National Champion — Rose Bowl MVPx2 — 30-2 record
Anybody else watch that show before GameChangers?

    tickrdr

  56. Skyline Crew Says:

Ya I laughed when he said he was the best in the draft. Consesus says it is Leonard Williams, but to each their own I guess.

    @Celly

Totally hypothetical question just for shts and grins.

IF the Browns offered a straight up trade…Johnny Football for MG8 would you take it?

First off, let me say that i’m in the same boat as people that still have faith in Lovie and Licht. Especially Licht… to expect him to come in and be great at his job his first go around is unfair. I think he learned from his mistakes last year and is trying to do things differently. If he would’ve come in here doing the same exact things as last year, then i would have a problem with that.

    On to your hypothetical:
Its hard for me to answer that based on the amount of variables. My initial gut reaction would be “yes”. The ability to reunite him with Evans would be great and I think the fact that he’s owning up to his issues and trying to better himself is a good thing.

With that being said, though. After putting thought into it, the smart move for the team would probably be to pass. In this current situation, I believe that Winston will be better than Johnny Football in the long term. We would also not have any viable backup if we did make that trade.

So at the end of the day, I would probably just stay the course and draft Winston.

    @tickrdr

I don’t want to predict what I think his stats will be, but the one thing i will predict is that he’ll have more wins in one season than Glennon has had his entire Bucs career.

    @Skyline

What do ou want him to say? Why wouldn’t you say you’re the best?

And if he gets drafted #1, does that solidify his argument?

  58. cmurda Says:

Was he also extremely arrogant when post-pro day workout he immediately said he needs to improve his pocket awareness and movement? I personally want my franchise QB to have the confidence in himself. If he would have mentioned another player’s name, he would have been heavily hated on for not having confidence himself. The man can’t win in the court of public opinion but he can win on the football field which will simmer the haters down. He should think he’s the best player in the draft. Some of the criticisms here are some far-fetched reaches, wouldn’t you agree?

  59. flhillbilly Says:

    #5

  60. Skyline Crew Says:

No it doesn’t solidify it. Drafts are regraded 3 years from now. Maybe he can prove it.
