Jameis Watch: Family First?

March 17th, 2015

JameisCrab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

There’s been no denial from the Jameis Winston camp refuting that Winston plans to stay home for the NFL Draft in Chicago on April 30, the night the Bucs restore hope — real Super Bowl hope, not Josh McCown hope — to their fan base.

Adam Caplan, of BSPN, dives into the subject via the BSPN video below. He claims Winston simply has a large family and many friends and wants to be together with them in Alabama.

In a column this morning, Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk.com suspects Winston might be the first draft holdout, the first in a wave of college athletes who realize the NFL makes tens of millions of dollars on the draft but doesn’t pay top picks for attending the festivities.

Joe really doesn’t care either way. The draft is a TV show, not practice at One Buc Palace.

What would be really cool is if Team Glazer had a private jet waiting near Winston’s Alabama family gathering. Then, after Winston is drafted by Tampa Bay, he could be flown directly to Tampa and brought to the Buccaneers’ draft party and introduced to fans by Gerald McCoy.

(Here’s the BSPN video on Winston.)

  1. Nick Says:

Should be hilarious to see how this is spun as a negative against his character. Don’t disappoint me, Mariota Mob!

  2. Underdog Says:

I’m not a Winston hater at all, but I thought it was a very low class and elementary school move by the Winston camp to announce something like that on the day that Mariota is visiting the Bucs to try to steal a little bit of the thunder and attention from that. If that’s the kind of things that they are continually going to do then the Bucs should steer clear of that kind of arrogance and drama as one day it will be used against them

  3. Buc1987 Says:

Nick…that didn’t take long did it.

  4. canadian bucsfan Says:

    @underdog
Lol way to come through for nick!

  5. Rrsrq Says:

Matt Schaub released by tha Raiders, thoughts JBF posters. Sign him if he still wants to play, trade Glennon for a 3rd, QB situation in better hands than the last 10 years.
Jameis, I really don’t care where he is on Thursday, long as he is in Tampa on Friday.

  6. Bird Says:

Joe. I wish you could be there. You would cry for sure.

  7. bucrightoff Says:

People need to stop with the trade Glennon for a 3rd rounder stuff. To who? All potential teams that would give up a 3rd rounder (i.e. teams that would start him) have gotten other QBs already for cheaper. If Glennon is traded now, it’s as a backup to someone else, so basically for the sake of trading him. 5th round pick is the ceiling. More than likely he’s the opening day starter so people should probably get used to it.

And Schaub? Why? He’s terrible and a pick-6 machine. He’s Josh McCown but slightly younger. Glennon is better by a comfortable margin

  8. Rrsrq Says:

@Underdog, Marcus Mariotta was at OBP, wow, they snuck him in there under the radar,

  9. Waterboy Says:

Lol if Winston announcing that he didn’t plan to attend the draft stole away from Mariota’s thunder of being in Tampa that day then there obviously isn’t much excitement in that area about him coming there. Nothing that Mariota could’ve done would’ve overshadowed Winston’s visit to Tampa.

  10. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

Never has the fanbase and franchise been in such disarray…..never !…. and I have experienced it ALL……

  11. Nick Says:

    I love this site!

  12. Pat Says:

    Gone Duck hunting? Lol.

  13. Bill Says:

ESPN has been so kind to Jameis. I’m shocked he would shun them like this, lol.

  14. tmaxcon Says:

Love to see Winston at draft party that would be a much better pr stunt for bucs than if Winston is in Chicago. Go all action movie, smoke, music and introduce the saviour of Buccaneer Football Jameis.

  15. Architek Says:

I actually think it would be brilliant if he did that – I like everything he’s done for his image since he’s declared.

If this continues we can’t pass on him-

  16. tmaxcon Says:

    Bill

That is a very good point.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Oh it’s not just here they are trying to spin it into a negative. I was reading an article about it from another writer and at the end of the article the woman writer writes : “With Winston staying home, I wonder if this is a sign that the Tampa bay Buccaneers will pass on him and go with Marcus Mariota.”

Why she saw this a sign escapes me…

  18. Luther Says:

So much noise made over nothing. I have a huge family too and would love to celebrate with them something this big.

  19. Arealbucsfan Says:

@bucrightoff theres still Arizona and the Saints and the Browns

  20. Harry Says:

    @Buc1987 Says:
“Nick…that didn’t take long did it.”

    LMAO, it never does 87.

    @Underdog,
“…I’m not a Winston hater at all, but I thought it was a very low class and elementary school move by the Winston camp…”

I am a little slow. But that kind of sounds like a hater… I would also love to see Winston at the traveling circus called NFL draft so I can cheer him once the Bucs choose him to be their Franchise QB for the next 10 years. But I don’t get how it makes one “low class and elementary school” by choosing to enjoy this lifetime achievement moment with family and friends instead of further enriching the NFLs pockets. Maybe you can explain that to us…

  21. Nick Says:

All kidding aside, isn’t this EXACTLY what we want Jameis to do.. In essence he’s passing up a red-carpet party in his honor with thousands of media members and fans to spend time with his family. If Manning or Brady did this we’d all be talking about how humble and down to earth they are.

  22. Harry Says:

“…What would be really cool is if Team Glazer had a private jet waiting near Winston’s Alabama family gathering. Then, after Winston is drafted by Tampa Bay, he could be flown directly to Tampa and brought to the Buccaneers’ draft party and introduced to fans by Gerald McCoy.”

This is brilliant Joe. I would love this more than him just shaking Goodell’s hand. I can see it now, “we are not going to win just one SB, not two, not three…”. Yeah, that would sell some tickets!

  23. bucrightoff Says:

Arizona has Carson Palmer, no more than 5th
Cleveland gave McCown $7 million (!!!) guaranteed, no more than a 5th
Saints? Why would we trade him there to learn under an all-time great QB and an elite QB developer? No thanks. And even then, they won’t offer much either since they know the Bucs have no leverage

I’m not saying Glennon can’t or won’t be traded, but expecting a 3rd round pick is a bit much. No market, no leverage. A 5th is the best case scenario.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

“What would be really cool is if Team Glazer had a private jet waiting near Winston’s Alabama family gathering. Then, after Winston is drafted by Tampa Bay, he could be flown directly to Tampa and brought to the Buccaneers’ draft party and introduced to fans by Gerald McCoy.”

All props go to The Buc Realist who came up with this idea yesterday on Jameis Watch.

  25. DallasBuc Says:

A could care less. As long as he shows up on Sundays in the fall wearing a hideous new Bucs uni that’s all that matters.

  26. Eric Says:

The Commissioner has no problem with it.

I’m certain ESPN will have full coverage from wherever Jameis will be. I’m assuming Bessemer, Alabama.

Having been to Bessemer many times, I am sure this is a huge thing for them.

A kid takes a bit of the spotlight off himself to include family and friends, and some want to hate about it.

Par for the course I guess.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

The day after the draft when I know he’s ours…I will promptly call the ticket office order my season tickets.

44 days 9 hours 21 minutes and 16 seconds until the NFL draft.

  28. Strider #FamousJameis Says:

Wow why not just bring Winston and his whole family to the draft party we gonna get crunk

  29. bucs4lyfe Says:

this is what the fan base has come to….it’s just horrible how desperate bucs fans have become. sign Matt Schaub has been posted on your site joe (Matt Schaub) that tells me all I need to know about mike glennon

  30. Bill Says:

I’m not sure what crunk means, but I’ll happily spill a few shots in memory of the Falcons, Saints, and Pussycats.

  31. Posey99 Says:

“So much noise made over nothing. I have a huge family too and would love to celebrate with them something this big.”

Why bring your family to watch you play in the super bowl when you can stay at home and watch it on TV, I agree…

  32. Buccfan37 Says:

Jameis can do no wrong. Might as well annoint him as a saint. On appearing at the draft, if you can’t stand the heat stay out of the kitchen. His followers are like honey dripping off the honeycomb.

  33. BrianDorry55 Says:

Hmm…go to Chicago and get booed by thousands of clueless asshats…or stay home with your family and friends and celebrate and feel loved? I would stay home.

  34. mike Says:

who cares everybody stop crying it doesnt change anything hurry up draft so i all this crying stops, as if jameis announcing hes not going to chicago totally changes the coaching staffs mind lol and it ruined mariotas thunder in 1 day after 4 years in college and a heisman lol people need a hobby

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I have mixed emotions. It’s his choice but I would like seeing our #1 pick receiving the jersey from Goodell. Perhaps both can happen if the pick is Mariota

  36. Bill Says:

    @Buccfan37,

BSPN has dumped on this kid (and FSU) for two solid years. I didn’t see this coming, but I’m really happy he’s stickin it to the media outlet that has bashed him for his entire college career. BSPN earned this.

  37. bucs4lyfe Says:

Winston will be with his family here in tampa on draft day and when the camera’s show a shot of him on video he’ll be walking out of the tunnels at Raymond james stadium at the cheer of the fans who showed up to watch the draft hahaha epic

  38. Buc1987 Says:

Perhaps this is just a feeler. Throw it out there to see how it’s received. Perhaps Goodell suggested it during their meeting. No need to bring anymore heat from the activist groups upon the NFL. No need for the eventual booing by some fans in the audience, just because of his name and his past allegation. People will boo him just because. I see no need to go through all that. Let him listen to the boos from the comfort of his own home.

  39. The Buc Realist Says:

I had said that it would be great if the secret plan was to fly Jamies to the Bucs draft party at Ray J! But I do like having McCoy introduce Winston. As it would be symbolic of the passing of the torch of Team Leader to Winston!

  40. Bill Says:

I think Winston needs to earn that torch.

  41. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Man, he is so fat in those videos, lol. And you see how he lumbers off the field? Eww.

He’ll be at the draft. Mark my words. I said it first the other day.

  42. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I think Mike Glennon should introduce him. lol

  43. Bill Says:

    lol

  44. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

Winston hasn’t even been in the NFL and people already talking about playoffs and Super Bowl’s?! LMFAO!

Don’t get me wrong, to come in right away and play, Winston wins by a landslide. But best QB once its all said and done (and that is why we draft, to have a QB for the next 10-15 years, not to play right away) Its Mariota, and its not even close.

    #MariotaorBUST

  45. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Buc1987 Says
“Perhaps this is just a feeler…Perhaps Goodell suggested it…”

Okay…that is just stretching things too far, 87, lol. At least be realistic.

Goodell would not suggest it because the number one pick is something hte hosting city would want present. The NFL now treats the draft like the super bowl…cities bid on having it. While they cannot force Winston to be there, they’ll make sure to find a way.

PFT suggested paying the invited players to attend. I have no problem with that…although it won’t be much compared to what they’ll get from the teams.

Or they could give cars to the first 5 picks that are present. That might get them to attend.

  46. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @Bucsfan4lyf

As the number one pick, there is every likelihood that winston will go to a superbowl or two. He’ll be able to easily cover the cost of the tickets.

  47. WORSETHANLASTYEAR Says:

jboo in Manchester gear already? Why not hand him the play book already?

  48. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

    LMAO @ BuccaneerBonzai

I saw the Jon Gruden QB Camp with Mariota, and I didn’t see what all the fuss was about was. He was trying to scare Mariota and he just laughed it off, good for him. This is the same guy who couldn’t draft a QB and groom him when he was the head coach of the Bucs. He’s too intense for kids and rather than help them out with the lingo, he just forces it down their throats and blames them for messing everything up.

Can’t wait to see Mariota throw a deep ball to Mike Evans 😀

  49. bucs4lyfe Says:

some people still are in denial…im not saying Winston or mariotta are Andrew luck or RG3 even but the hype and excitement surrounding the franchise is still the same, I think if ryan tannehill can come in and be an average quarterback both these guys can also. this would be the ultimate most useless bluff in the history of the nfl draft if the bucs did anything except draft Winston, some people are still in denial and seems we are going to lose some of the fanbase. having said that the sooner you malcontents go somewhere else the better, the fans we lose we’ll double in new intrigued fans when the bucs start winning, if you want to say the bucs wont ever be winners again then tampa is the hot young sexy girl that left your brokenhearted and you still haven’t gotten over her….let it go and focus, last year was just that last year, this is a new league year everyone is 0-0

  51. Bucsfan4lyf Says:

    Andrew Luck> JaMEis Winston

    AND

    Marcus Mariota> RG3

  52. MadMax Says:

You know, Ive been kinda quiet about Jameis and his detractors. I never took his off field stuff that serious because of his age, immaturity and the fact that girl just didnt have proof. But its crazy how LOW some of you stoop when hating on the young man.

I get you dont like him or want him here….but really, some of you go even LOWER in attacking the other fans who do want him here! Some of them on a very personal level when you dont even know them. That says more about you than I think you realize.

Maybe its just me, but I couldnt hate a player on my team, as much as some of you and still be a Buc! If you’re so serious at hating him so much and hating those of us who want to draft him, then I hope you have enough sanity to find comfort elsewhere….theres 31 other teams for you to choose from to root for while you rot in bitterness rooting against us!

  53. Phillip Says:

Who cares if he or anyone wants to give Goodell a weird awkward hug(Thank GMC for that) and deal with that traffic for no money?

Idc if any of our draft picks go to the draft itself.. Phone interviews work

This is coming from someone who doesn’t want to draft Winston either lol

Winston haters are jut as bad as the blind supporters apparently.

  54. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

    Family first my A$$!

this THUG thinks hes too good to go to the Draft and not get paid! Forget him! Marcus this is YOUR TEAM!

Im telling you all right now! Marcus will be the pick. I have family in the bucs organization!

  55. Jack Says:

CBSS says it avoids Winston getting booed at the ceremony. Man I hope everyone calms down in Tampa and gives this kid a chance to play QB.

  56. RustyRhino Says:

Lol tmaxcon “Go all action movie, smoke, music and introduce the saviour of Buccaneer Football Jameis.”
As a Buc fan since 1976 I’ve read and seen plenty of crazy things about our team, this one made me wonder. Say we do this and the opposite results happen. Winston never does all the walking on water things that keep getting thrown out there that “will” happen if we draft him. What happens if he is totally sucks? Will we all be down on him, the OC, Head Coach, GM? All of this professed knowledge of who he is what he will do, is not proven until he actually plays a few seasons. Not that his buc fan following on this blog want to see that. In most posts here on JoeBucsFan he will be a multi super bowl winning QB, able to out run or hurdle the DLmen in his face as soon as he gets the ball. All of his passes will be past the DB’s because he can throw it into tight windows. Those that sing his praises on high act like he is above mistakes on the football field. Lets let his actions prove his character and his play on the field on Sunday’s his QB success before we anoint him as the savior of any kind of NFL team.

  57. Buc1987 Says:

    MadMax Says :

“I get you dont like him or want him here….but really, some of you go even LOWER in attacking the other fans who do want him here!”

For the record Max. This mikeh guys has been calling me every name in the book for the last 2 weeks and I never fired back until yesterday.

  58. joeNUTS Says:

JW Fans…. just remember these days when Winston is not listening to the coaches on the side line because ya know he does what he wants when he wants and how he wants….because he has been told he is a football god and is entitled. It kinda goes back to the game he dressed for when he was suspended…you really have to question either his intelligence or arrogance/entitled ways. The warning signs are there but most of you choose to make excuses or ignore the facts.

DO NOT FORGET these early signs of immaturity. I have pretty much conceded JW will be the pick because BSPN says we should along with Mel Kiper- who never gets anything wrong. The last guy who skipped the draft and was picked first was a BUST btw…Wilkerson; lacked maturity too. He knew everything too much like the JW fans on this site. lol

  59. Couch Fan Says:

I apologize for my Gator Brethren’s stupidity. Were not all as stupid as Gatoryboy, I promise.

  60. Couch Fan Says:

What happens if he is totally sucks?

    —————————————–
Quite simple really. It will be just another name in the long list of Buc 1st round Busts.

But he could also be our 1st franchise QB. Were bound to pick one sometime.

  61. StPeteBucsFan Says:

What would be really cool is if Team Glazer had a private jet waiting near Winston’s Alabama family gathering.

No what would be really cool Joe is after the Bucs pay proper respect to MM and Koetter’s good bud Helfrich it’s time to pull the trigger and sign Fameis immediately.

Who cares about the crap in Chicago and jets flying his family around. I want him at OBC NOW. I thought the NFL had a rule that permitted this. Does it still exist now that the most recent CBA has rookie salary caps? I’m not certain.

But if it’s possible sign Fameis and get him to OBC. I’d rather see the daily video of Fameis working out with Evans/VJAX at Curtis Hixon Park or wherever they need to go to keep from violating OTA provisions.

In addition Fameis would lift with OUR strength conditioning people. When he’s done he just wanders down the hall for film study with Koetter.

Scrw the “reality” show in Chicago. Let’s get to work and get Fameis coached up before summer practice begins in earnest.

If we want to impress his family fine….fly them in for a big signing ceremony at OBC.

  62. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

    Really COUCH!?

you calling a fellow gator fan names? wow.

  63. budnbeers Says:

Why do we always have to go to thug. If you want to see real “thugs”, go to Ferguson Mo.

  64. bo Says:

He probably stole it when he was in town

  65. Buc1987 Says:

Curtis….Couch Fan will cry if they don’t draft Winston.

Yes he is a Gaytors fan.

  66. Couch Fan Says:

Technically I didnt call you any names. I was pointing out your unintelligent comment because I did not want all Gator fans lumped in with that sewage of a statement.

  67. Curtis Gatorboy Says:

You called me STUPID! Wow couch. whats wrong with you?!

  68. Josh P Says:

Anyone complain when #3 pick Joe Thomas went fishing with his dad instead of attending draft? Nope, they just called him a good ol boy. Yet Jameis gets raked over the coals by the media. Specially the local sports media, particularly 3 to 6 slot.

  69. Buccfan37 Says:

I do remember that pic here when Winston was in Tampa, standing on a field to the right of Licht. Winston had a frown on his face looking at Licht. Winston does’nt know if the Bucs are drafting him first either.
