The Commish Now Flies Solo

March 14th, 2013

Joe delivered sports radio news yesterday, penning a piece on the possible free agency of the dean of Tampa Bay sports radio, so of course Joe is bringing you today’s huge local sports radio news.

Joe’s good friend and NFL Draft guru Justin “The Commish” Pawlowski, is now flying solo weekdays 9 a.m. to noon on WHFS-FM 98.7. His former co-host, Tampa Bay Times columnist Gary Shelton, was ousted yesterday.

A former host of the Buccaneers Radio Network, The Commish knows his football inside and out, and then some. And Joe’s pleased to see that he’ll be free to spread his wings. Good luck, Commish!

Good, now I will try to listen again. Having Sheldon in there was a disaster.

  2. the_buc_realist Says:

Cannot wait to hear the Commish ( especially now that it is draft time.) Good luck Commish, i will be listening.

  3. T in Orlando Says:

Now an even better option than Ron and Ian.

  4. J 2.0 Says:

Nice. He’s much better without Gary. Sorry.

What’s with the picture of the mEatBay guy?

  5. Dave Says:

Thank God, now we just have to get rid of the sports page on 620

  6. Jason A Says:

This picture reminds me of Andy from Parks and Rec

  7. Matt Says:

Congrats Commish!!! Its about time brother.

  8. Buc Fan #238 Says:

I would rather here two people talking sports vs one mega ego maniac ala the guy at 3 on the ‘other’ channel.

BTW, Booger and the Fat guy are kicking the ‘other guy’s’ solo act to the curb.

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I heard him talking about MMA and the UFC, which is very good.
Personally, I did not mind Gary Shelton, but Justin will be fine w/o him.

I wonder what happened with Gary? I didnt like him on the show but I thats a big change… I love the Commish on air!!!

  11. Youpeoplearesodumb Says:

There is a reason Gary is in print media. He doesn’t have the face for TV or the voice for radio. At times he came across as the goofy old grandpa. This is a good move. I just hope the 620 bafoon does not find his way over to the fm dial.

  12. Buc Fan #238 Says:

When I listened yesterday, I liked what Gary brught to the show. He wasn’t an out of control freak of nature. He was representing a different demographic and some of the oder people enjoyed him… especially when he tried to calm Justin down.

Looks to me, J and his gang tried to OUST the old man. Hopefully Gary follows up on this.

  13. Ian_620WDAE Says:

Very happy to hear that Justin is going solo. Shelton and was an awkward fit with The Commish.

Now what’s the scoop with the guy at 3pm on the other station? Is he being let go at the end of his contract?

  14. Pete 422 Says:

I liked Gary’s knowledge & I thought that added a lot to the show. The Commish is great & I can’t imagine not having him on the radio.

  15. Huey Says:

I disagree with all of you who are bashing Shelton. He brought a thoughtfulness to the show. Journalists aren’t typically sensationalists. Sensationalism is what makes sports talk unbearable for me. When a stupid person calls in, sensationalists validate their perspectives. A journalist is more likely to be rational and confront the numbskulls.

I’m sure the powers at 987 didn’t like Gary’s schedule. He was gone a lot, so the show lacked his consistent presence. I like Justin, but he has failed doing solo before. Gary’s name is well-known in the area. I wish Justin the best of luck.

  16. Tbuc Says:

Didn’t like Shelton he killed the energy the Commish brings. But Justin needs to get rid of the neck beard. Looking forward to the new format.

  17. BucSnob Says:

    FINALLY!!!!! The Commish is awesome!!!

  18. Joe Says:

I like Justin, but he has failed doing solo before.

    Really?

  19. Huey Says:

    Yes, really.

  20. Pete I Says:

Unfortunately here in Lakeland the fm station does not come in clearly and another fm station steps on it. When they took them off 1010 I basically lost the show.

Shelton didn’t suck but I listened for the commish.

I also agree the sports page is a waste. Silieo might have been a blowhard but he was entertaining and intense. A perfect wakeup show.

  21. Joe Says:

    Huey:

You would be dead wrong then.

  22. Huey Says:

So this is Justin’s first radio gig?

  23. Bucamania Says:

Gary was knowledgeable but you could tell there was very little chemistry b/w the two of them.

  24. Joe Says:

So this is Justin’s first radio gig?

    No.
