Kellen Winslow Told He Is No Longer With Bucs

May 21st, 2012

Dallas Clark could be the replacement

Bucs tight end Kellen Winslow appeared this morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio’s “Opening Drive” with Ross Tucker and Andrew Bogusch and was told he is no longer welcome with the Bucs.

Ironically, per SiriusXM NFL Radio, he was in Tampa this weekend to participate in the Bucs OTAs this week when he was told by the Bucs Saturday morning his Tampa days are done.

Bogusch documented on his Twitter feed what Winslow explained initially, saying the Bucs were angry he was not in Tampa working out with the team.

Winslow claimed the Bucs told him the team was good with him not coming into Tampa for workouts until he was told this morning of his Buccaneers demise.

Winslow also confirmed the Bears were interested in trading for him during the offseason.

BSPN’s Adam Schefter claims, via Twitter, the Bucs will make a move on Dallas Clark to replace him.

Joe is of the belief that Clark is in Tampa as Joe types. Last night a reader of Joe’s claimed Clark was on the same flight from Indianapolis to Tampa that landed at Tampa International last night at 7 p.m. The reader claimed he spoke with Clark who did not know if he would sign with the Bucs.

Joe must stress he could not confirm the reader’s story. Given what happened this morning with Winslow and the reader’s story last night, it adds up.

    Just saw this on Twitter.

Terrible, terrible move to potentially sign a certain tight end who is FOUR years older! C’mon Schiano!

Terrible, terrible move to first cut/trade K2 for the right to potentially sign a certain tight end who is FOUR years older! C’mon Schiano!

    *fixed

  3. Meh Says:

Sensible, who are you talking about them signing to replace him?

  4. SensibleBuc Says:

I don’t want to step on Joe and the site. You can see it on Schefter’s twitter page.

  5. Mikeck Says:

Well, we say “bad move”, but do we really know the relatiosnhip between KW and Josh Freeman? Maybe there was something there that told Schiano that Winslow was poison?

  6. Bucs4life Says:

Dallas Clark could be a nice little stop gap as Stocker develops (hopefully) into a true starting TE.

  7. Meh Says:

Dallas Clark? Seriously? Ugh. Not that I’m a big Winslow fan, but I don’t think Clark has anything at all left in the tank.

  8. Nick Says:

Dallas Clark = a veteran leader to teach the young, just drafted TE’s.

Winslow= not much of a leader who couldn’t care less about the new TE’s

  9. Eric Says:

Down goes another Mark Dominik decision.

Second round premium pick for K2 up in smoke.

Wonder if he has grounds for grievance for being released for not showing up to “voluntary” work outs?

All that said, this proves to me that Greg Schiano is in charge, no way Dom would have done this on his own.

Clark looks good woth Manning, not sure what he really brings to this team though.

  10. bucobruce Says:

I love this move and clark has alot left.If you dont live and breath football hit the streets (winslow).

  11. wheresmaldo Says:

Straight culture change. We certainly don’t get better replacing Winslow with Clark, but I don’t forsee us getting any worse. Our TE situation is still that: a situation.

  12. Hectic Buc Says:

its not a terrible move k 2 was poison for freeman . Did anybody see the bucs game last year k 2 complained and fought with freeman 2 get him the ball so much he forced way 2 many 2 him and alot got picked off. good idea 2 bring in dallas yes he is old but so what we dont need him for the next 3 season only for this 1 hopfully stocker can do something. step up stocker if not the bucs will be drafting another dame te in the draft again.

  13. Eric Says:

Perhaps not a terrible move, but no doubt a terrible trade.

  14. Deminion Says:

I dnt mind hope we cn get some value for for k2 via trade

  15. SensibleBuc Says:

    K2: 48 games played since ’09
Clark: 33 games played since ’09

    FBO DYAR: K2 beat Clark in ’10 & ’11

Dallas Clark is FOUR years older.

It’s going to be more expensive to make this move because we’ve got to take the cap hit AND sign Clark to a more expensive deal than K2 would’ve made this year ($1.3 mil).

    Not happy.

  16. Hectic Buc Says:

the question i have for dominik is why did he not sign martellus bennett when he had the chance. younger bigger stronger then dallas and his brother is already a big presence on the team. that would have been cool 2 have brothers on the same team. and would have pushed each other harder.

  17. FreemanBomb5 Says:

I shudder to think that the second Dom gave up to get bad knees Winslow could’ve easily brought us Shady McCoy a few picks later… Winslow > Clark either way

  18. Hectic Buc Says:

Next one to go will be briscoe said to say cause i was hoping that he will do good this year. Dont know what he is thinking honestly. The bucs have alot of wr know we dont really need him i much more rather them give ed gant a shot wish they would have done it last year. I still dont know why they didnt give him a shot last year. i knew spurlock wasnt coming back so y not give they young guys some playing time. ed gant is going to have another real good preseason but this time we have a coach that will not only fight for him 2 get on the field but make room for him.

  19. Adam Says:

I honestly think that K2 was Jedi-mind-tricking Freeman last season into throwing the ball his way, regardless of circumstance. There was some stat that I saw on FOX late in the season that said something like 70% of INTs that Freeman threw were headed for K2.

This might be addition by subtraction. K2 was essentially another receiver, he wasn’t much of a blocker.

  20. T. Bass Says:

Winslow vs Clark is a push except Clark is low maintenance player compared to K2

  21. Mark Says:

Hey Joe! Wasn’t old KW himself who said if the Bucs fire “Rah” they would ruin the franchise – no need for him to worry now. Ha – Good riddance.

  22. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

It’s like all my prayers re: this team are getting answered. The apologists will try to argue it, but, he has NEVER lived up to that highest paid TE in NFL history tag. Glad Dom can eventually admit his mistakes.

There’s one more on the team that needs to be jettisoned soon. I’m talking about the violent felon. Things are looking great in Tampa.

  23. BraveBuc Says:

I agree with the addition by subtraction comment. Other than the terrible defensive play of the team last year, I think Winslow may be the other biggest reason for Freeman’s bad year.

I doubt they would make the move because they think Clark is more physically skilled at this point.

  24. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

And if you talk about Winslow’s age, please include the age of his knees, which are about 45 years old.

  25. SensibleBuc Says:

    Current Buc Tight Ends:

    Stocker
Dunsmore (he’s more of an H-Back)

    The pu pu platter:
    Chase “IR” Coffman
    Pianalto
Noble… clearly we aren’t throwing to the TE this season.

  26. Jacko101 Says:

Hate this move Winslow at least could move and catch passes how can freeman progress when you remove his lead target?

  27. bucsalltheway Says:

His shabby blocking is what did it and the Gimp knees and to top it off the t.o. like approach to freeman last year did it put a fork in em he’s done. Run first approach and u suck at blocking I good he didn’t think it was going to make us a better team. He lost my respect in the green bay game on the 2pt conversion. Don’t keep guys who are not fundamentally sounds and not willing to grind on your craft. Decent numbers but not the pro bowler he once was

  28. Snook Says:

Say what you want about Winslow but don’t bash his knees. The guy played in every single game since he was in Tampa.

Can’t say I’m surprised by today’s news. He sealed his fate back in January when he basically said he wished the Bucs had signed Chudzinski as the new HC.

  29. DC Says:

We traded up and drafted Stocker in the 3rd round for a reason. Stocker and Clark as our TE’s isnt too shabby. Stocker was rarely on the field last season as a receiver. We all might be suprised what he can really do (in a good way)

    GO BUCS!!

  30. David Says:

    @Jacko

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that they’re moving toward a power run offense. I agree that KW was his leading target. I think this may have been in the plans for a while.

I would expect to see more blocking type TE’s with finding a dual threat just gravy. Also, with the signing of Vincent Jackson Winslow’s days as the leading target were numbered anyway.

With the salary KW commands and being signed (increasing scale) through 2014, I say get what you can and move on.

  31. raphael Says:

great move by the Bucs # Shiano !!

  32. TrueBlue Says:

I don’t know what the real deal is, but if Winslow was a problem in the locker room, or in Freeman’s ear trying to control the ball distribution, he needs to go. No doubt he can catch the ball, but the guy is useless as a blocker. Bucs are a better team without him. Look for Stocker to step up.

  33. DAN Says:

didnt kellen once say he will never play for a white coach?

  34. Have A Nice Day Says:

He did good for us. Next man up.

  35. SensibleBuc Says:

    @ Dan

K2 played for Larry Coker lol

  36. DAN Says:

hey, thought i heard that, somewhere, just asking if it was right, (looked it up and all i could find was a big deal between him and his dad, his dad wouldnt let him go to michigan because there werent enough black people on the coaching staff)

  37. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

    Dallas Clark? Maybe.

Or maybe the rookies have impressed enough to decided they can afford to release Winslow now.

His knees have been an issue over the past few years…I, along with several others, have been wanting us to find a young replacement. Maybe they did.

But…I suspect this has more to do with Freeman than with Schiano. The way Winslow got in his face last year?

And maybe Winslow wasn’t giving 100% during OTAs. We’ll never know the real truth I suppose. Although I’m sure certain people here will mention someone they know having insider info…whether it’s true or not.

  38. Hawaiian Buc Says:

Have to admit, I’m not crazy about this move. I think Winslow has been pretty good for us, and I never really got some of the heat he received from some fans. That being said, he didn’t look the same last year (then again, that pretty much applies to everyone on the team). He looked considerably slower. He rarely, if ever, broke any tackles. Not too good for a TE that can’t block. I don’t think this will be a catastrophic loss, but it definitely makes me very nervous.

  39. Paul Says:

Yuk, I don’t care for Winslow, but if Dallas Clark is the replacement, then no thanks.

  40. Bobby Says:

Hate to say I told you so but…..

  41. Thomas2.2 Says:

I sucks being right so often. Lol

  42. raphael Says:

first accurate comment ever from 2.2 ^^^^^^^^^^^^ lol
