Did Kyle Moore Get Washed Out?

Sackless in regular season play, defensive end Kyle Moore had two sacks in Kansas City last week and looked darn sharp, even if he was playing against future furniture movers, beer truck drivers and guys who might be enrolling in grad school next week.
Moore battled some injuries during his first two seasons but still managed to see the field for 16 games. He was gifted the starting left end job entering last season and was never impressive,.
Tuesday night, while speaking on 1010 AM to Derek “Old School” Fournier, former Bucs defensive end Steve White said Moore regressed during his first two seasons but White danced around calling former Bucs defensive line coach Todd Wash second rate. However, that was the message.
“Now you see a little bit different attitude, a little bit different technique from everybody [on the D-line,] White said of play under new line coaches Grady Stretz and Keith Millard.
“Nobody questioned [Moore’s] effort or anything like that, the thing with Kyle [Moore] was his technique, plain and simple. He did not get off blocks. He did not come off the ball real fast. He was always kind of a look-and-see move instead of just making them react to him. And, you know, a lot of that can be contributed to coaching. But you know you’ve got do what you gotta do with whatever coach you have.
“Yes, he’s flashing now and that’s great. Unfortunately, now he’s so he’s so far down on the depth chart, how does he get to stay on this team? What I hope to see is him out on kickoff team, on kickoff returns, maybe even on punt return team trying to show how important it is to him to make this team. Because when you’re third team, man, it’s hard. … You gotta get in where you fit it in.”
White also talked about the important changes Michael Bennett has made under the new coaching staff and how he was a clear standout against the Chiefs.
Joe almost feels bad now for Moore. First, the Bucs demanded he fatten up fast as part of the heinous Jim Bates Experience. And perhaps Wash so mangled his development that the guy is going to lose his job because he was set free too late — after the Bucs drafted two ends.
Joe can’t wait to see Gerald McCoy tonight, his first game of the post-Wash era.

I think Raheem is going to have a tough decision with the DE’s and he may even be tempted to keep 5 on the active roster instead of the usual 4. We’ll see.

Hey…it’s game day and I haven’t seen the requisite “I want this, I want that, I expect to see this, I expect to see that in tonight’s game” post. Come on. Where is it? The fantasy football types are waiting to add their two cents as to what they demand out of tonight’s performance.
*note: I’m not a fantasy football type nor do I fancy myself an armchair GM or head coach.

Moore has flashed in the preseason before. In 2009 against the Miami Dolphins, Moore lined up at DT and bullrushed a Dolphin OG, jacking him backwards and down en route to a Moore sack. It was quite spectacular despite it coming against a guy that’s likely selling shoes right now.
But still, since then Moore has been oft-injured. Whether he has been productive or not, the fact that he’s been hurt so much puts a serious damper on his abilities and ability to help the team. If he’s been truly impressive, then hopefully he can make his way onto the team… if there’s no room perhaps the Bucs can be compensated in some way.
As it stands now, the DEs are Bowers, Clayborn, Bennett, likely Crowder, with Moore and EJ Wilson probably battling for a DE/DT swing spot. Of course with Dakoda Watson showing himself as a very capable rusher from the RDE position, perhaps 5 DEs would be too much of a luxury especially when there’s 5 DTs that the team would probably like to keep as well. (McCoy, Miller, Price, Woods, Okam). It’s possible that Okam and Woods are fighting for one position.

I agree there are going to be some tough decisions to be made on the d-line. One or two good players likely won’t make it. This is a good problem to have, though, and one we haven’t seen in Tampa in quite some time.

@Brandon Very good call on keeping 5 DTs. With McCoy being injured lately and Price still a question mark, Woods will be necessary insurance.

Seems like with the lockout the NFL would allow an expanded regular season roster this year.

Keeping 9 DLinemen has been done before… keeping 10, I’m not so sure we could do that. That being said, what really worries me is that I like Frank Okam’s change-up to the other DTs’ fastballs (McCoy, Price, Miller) but it often isn’t a good sign when a player plays soooo much in one preseason game. I recall seeing Okam late in the week 1 preseason game… that’s usually not a good sign for him stcking around. I prefer Okam over Woods because of his change-up factor, on the other hand, I prefer to keep all 5, find a place for Moore to be shipped to… perhaps sneak EJ Wilson onto the practice squad and keep Bowers, Clayborn, Bennett, and Crowder as our DEs (with Watson being an occasional nickel DE and Clayborn and Bennett being nickel DTs).

I originally thought Moore would be kept as the 5th DE (Bowers, Clayborne, Bennett, Crowder) but now I think they will keep 5 DTs because of Brian Price’s recovery process and Roy Miller getting hurt.

back to the topic of discussion….no thanks Mr. Moore. i agree that it is possible his development was stunted due to unfortunate circumstances….but the other 4 DEs ahead of him (Clayborn, Bennett, Bowers and Crowder) all offer more athletic ability, all are hard workers, and they have more upside overall. been nice knowin ya Kyle, best of luck in your future endeavors.
