The Steelers And Chris Godwin

October 23rd, 2026

Name floated.

When a 1-5 team has veterans nearing the ends of their contracts and the team is 1-5 and the head coach is under siege during a 3-12 run, well, calls for a fire sale are bound to happen.

(For those curious, Raheem Morris, Greg Schiano and Dirk Koetter were all 4-11 in their last 15 games as Bucs head coach. Lousy Lovie Smith was 6-9.)

Carter Bahns of CBS was typing a story on prospective trades before the Nov. 10 deadine and noted Chris Godwin could be moved.

The team? The Steelers.

There is a wide receiver injury crisis in Pittsburgh. Aaron Rodgers was on a hot streak until health issues depleted his supporting cast. In order to maximize the supposed last year of his career and stay in contention for the AFC North crown, the Steelers need to plug some immediate help into Rodgers’ receiving room. …

All of that makes the Steelers potentially desperate buyers at the deadline. Chris Godwin Jr. should be on their radar. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, whom they just defeated in overtime, are drifting further into the abyss and should be ready to sell. His three-year contract makes him an expensive asset who struggles to stay on the field, and that is a profile that the Buccaneers would seemingly want to part with.

He is healthy now, though, and that is what matters to the Steelers. Plus, he should be a tremendous fit next to Metcalf. Godwin spent every year prior to this one on the other side of a towering No. 1 target in Mike Evans, so he would be right at home in the same lineup as a similarly sizable go-to weapon like Metcalf.

If the Bucs have to trade Godwin — Joe dreads the thought — at least let him go to a team that can use him and take advantage of him.

Joe has a hunch Godwin would love to play for a playoff contender and again have a Hall of Fame quarterback,

It would be a very sad day to see Godwin traded. But it’s not like offennsive coordinator Zac Robinson and the Bucs getting much use out of him. Joe trusts Mike McCarthy to tap into Godwin’s talents more than Robinson has.

  1. Todd Says:

No a truly sad day was when HOF’er Mike Evans departed. Evans departure made every WR on the Bucs roster much worse , because they did not have a 6-5 230lb beast drawing the #1 Corner on every snap that he was on the field.

  2. BucsFan81 Says:

Trade Godwin let him finish out his career with a winning team and franchise. As much as I love the Bucs this team is trash. The coaching is garbage and they need a full rebuild. I think they need to do everything they can to secure the best pick possible in April with a new regime to lead the way with the young talent this football team does have.

  3. Steve V Says:

Yeah Evans was great!……Especially when he played the 5 games in 2 seasons ,He was unstoppable!! Fantastic The Bomb! UGH!!

  4. can-we-get-rid-of-Licht-now-PLEASE? Says:

The Bucs “are drifting further into the abyss and should be ready to sell”.
Jason Licht isn’t going to do ANYTHING at the trade deadline. Not because it’s what’s good for the team. It’s because he really doesn’t know how to be a good GM. That’s obvious. Licht made a brilliant trade for Gronkowski to win the SB.
BUT “Head coach Bruce Arians stated that it was Brady himself who was adamant for the team to trade for Gronkowski.” Licht is not an innovative or intelligent GM. He has no vision for the team. Never has. His latest moves were to extend Vea and Mayfield. I honestly believe he may have some cognitive issues.

  5. View from Modern Times Says:

I love watching Godwin but this OC has no clue.

On the flip side, a win in Carolina would prove the division is garbage again and Licht Bowles and ownership will chase another dubious NFC South title. 6 division games left. So 7-10 could make the playoffs.

  6. FlBoy84 Says:

No problem letting a few vets walk like Godwin, Anzalone, Winfield, Vita, Mauch, Diaby, etc., as long as we retain the young talent base currently in place for the next HC. Would actually like to resign Robinson on the DL though as a solid vet mentor for the younger DT’s we need to develop.

  7. jpp's hand Says:

Do the honorable thing and let Godwin go somewhere to finish his career on a high note. This version of the Bucs is done.
It was fun while it lasted.
Dust off the brown bags and the alarm clock unis.

  8. ModHairKen Says:

They can have Godwin for free if they take Licht, too.

  9. Orange Republic Says:

I hate to say it, but Godwin might be the missing piece in New England. They’ve got all the other pieces on offense except a good slot receiver. Josh McDaniels offense was its best when they had welker and then Edelman. Pats made Chris a big offer in free agency. Seems like that’s the landing spot.

  10. GMC hater Says:

He has regressed this year just like most players on the offense. Doesn’t take a genius to figure out why.

  11. Marine Buc Says:

I would love to ask Jason Licht a question.

Maybe the Joes could help me…

Question is: Jason, do you honestly feel you have done a good job at assembling this roster?

If so – why are we 1-6?

I would be interested to hear if our GM is completely delusional or just semi-delusional…

We can’t really blame injuries (Baker’s injury actually helped us win one game) this season – so what is his current excuse?

  12. can-we-get-rid-of-Licht-now-PLEASE? Says:

In total, seven teams in NFL history have made the playoffs with a losing (sub-.500) record.

    1982 Cleveland Browns 4-5
    1982 Detroit Lions 4-5
    2010 Seattle Seahawks 7-9
    2014 Carolina Panthers 7-8-1
    2020’Washington Football Team 7-9
    2022 Bucs 8-9
    2025 Carolina Panthers 8-9

let’s all cheer for the Bucs to make history !
The first NFL team to make the playoffs with 10 losses
What an achievement ! Another NFC South crown !

  13. Confido75 Says:

At this point the Glazers are the slum lords of the NFL when it comes to managing this franchise. Considering they have made their wealth in real estate it makes total sense. Invest little into the asset and squeeze every penny out of it.

  14. Marine Buc Says:

And YES – I know we are currently 1-5 but this question is for next Monday…

    Wanted to clarify that.

  15. McBay Says:

    Insane.

  16. Bucnbeers Says:

Well, Chris did go to Penn State. So there’s that.

  17. Marine Buc Says:

    PLUS – this is ridiculous.

Do you realize that Godwin will still have @ $16.2M in guaranteed money if he is traded?

What a tremendous waste of resources.

Truth is this roster is barren of elite talent and there really isn’t anyone that another team would desire except T. Wirfs and maybe A-Rob…

We could get a haul for T. Wirfs.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

OK, prediction: Bucs WILL beat the Panthers. Probably not by much, but I’ll go with the win because we’re playing AT Carolina.

Bucs are now 0-4 at home this year. We’ve played 2 games on the road, and we’re 1-1. I like our odds on th road better.

  19. Defense Rules Says:

Marine Buc … ‘We could get a haul for T. Wirfs’.

Watched a couple of analyses on the web of the Bucs-Steelers game. Wirfs looked absolutely terrible. He was making mistakes that even rookie OLinemen don’t make.

And this has apparently been going on all year. I think he’s hurt, but if not, OLine coach has a LOT of explaining to do.

  20. Confido75 Says:

CG has had enough with this franchise. He is already making comments about his utilization and how this offense is nothing like any offense they have had, meaning it sucks. I am done blaming Bowles and JL for this mess. The Glazers make the decisions and their decisions only benefit themselves. They don’t care about Tampa or the fans. We need an ownership group that is from the bay area, meaning they grew up in the area. Not a bunch of 2nd and 3rd generation trust fund kids from New York.

  21. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

Well Vegas has the Panthers at home by 3.

So IMO they see it as an even match as the home team typically gets 3 points (most of the time).

The only game Vegas predicted the Bucs to be blown out was the Dallas game. The money line to bet on Dallas was 469.

Which means you had to bet $469 to win $100.

    LOL!

    Go figure.

  22. Marine Buc Says:

    @ DR

You are starting to build a solid case for trading T. Wirfs.

    Be careful amigo.

Last time I did that I got hate mail from the usual tardos for a month…

  23. ghost Says:

licht is a fraud who depended on spytek

  24. JimBobBuc Says:

Sure Godwin would play with Rodger’s, for one year only.

  25. can-we-get-rid-of-Licht-now-PLEASE? Says:

an interesting question is if the Bucs front office levels with the fans during the bye week – will they say “there’s a lot of football to be played” and “we’ve been in this situation before” – or will they honestly say they are writing off the season and making changes – I am betting on gaslighting and stonewalling

  26. Steve V Says:

    @ MARINE..My excuse is turnovers!

  27. CCHead Says:

Do Godwin a favor and trade him to Pittsburgh where he would be used properly. He was a star in college near by at Penn State where he broke school records. He would be missed here, but this coaching staff is a mess and he deserves better.

  28. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Steve V

Baker’s best year as an NFL QB he led the league in turnovers…

    Big surprise bud.

And don’t look now but here he comes again (that’s what she said).

Except now he has a “robo-glove” that will actually help with his throwing accuracy.

    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

    LOL!

  29. 813bucboi Says:

    I’d trade EE2…

he’s a #2 at best and could fetch more than chris

    GO BUCS!!!!

  30. Jmarkbuc Says:

Fire sales are good and all… but acquiring draft capital will do nothing if Licht is in charge.

  31. bud liked tht bucs Says:

buddy sez burn the whole thing down everybody the record is who you are

  32. Capt.Tim Says:

    We are cash strapped.
The new GM and Coach want flexibility and draft picks.
    Not debt and old guys.
    Trade Godwin and Vea.
    Godwin isn’t helping us.
I hope our new defensive Coordinator runs a 4-3 base defense.
Then Kancey and Bain put their hand on the ground, and we don’t need the big monster Nose tackle anymore.
Mauch and Gainwell leaving helps more than it hurts.

Mayfield is a huge asset to a new Coach. A pro bowl QB.
But we should still consider trading him.
He’s a great QB. But he’s getting old, and this team will need 2 years to be relevant again. By then, Mayfield is 34.

Might as well trade Mayfield, lose out( that should be easy), and draft a QB with that high draft pick.
Mayfield should get us a couple high picks- to help build both lines

  33. Obvious Says:

They have Bernard who dropped 21 points on us in half ppr fantasy last week. Hes their second round pick. No clue why they would want to add Godwin when they’ll get a couple guys back before EOY.

  34. Buccanstopit Says:

I don’t think we do any trades until we complete the next 2 division games-Carolina and Atlanta.

  35. BuccoMartyBuccoMartyBuccoMarty Says:

The problem with fire sales is that it signals that the team will be bad for a while, which means we’re back to overpaying underperforming free agents to come to town.

  36. JimBobBuc Says:

Sure Godwin would play with Rodger’s this year but after Rodger’s retires then Godwin would play with?

  37. Popcornmike67 Says:

I agree with bucsfan81, Godwin needs to be traded somewhere he can made the playoffs like Evans when Evan choose to leave the Bucs and. I am sure Godwin would be very, very happy with that move. And one other thing, all this get rid of Licht, Lichts done a decent job as GM The Bucs have a winning team they just need a winning HC

  38. ToesOnTheLine!!! Says:

If the Bucs lose to Carolina this week at the Falcons next week then they are realistically cooked (not that they aren’t already, but then there’s no more trying to spin things as “we still have a lot of football left” or “we’re only a game out of first place” hopium to con the fanbase with). At that point it would be malfeasance to not try to trade guys like Vea, Godwin, and even Wirfs. Give them a chance to play meaningful games in January and acquire draft capital to lure a new coaching staff (and front office?) next year. As for Godwin…I’m thinking the Vikings also might make a good suitor? They desperately need someone besides Jefferson to get their offense going.

  39. Rob Says:

The Steelers, Patriots, Chiefs, and Rams all make sense. Throw in the 49ers but not sure they can handle the cap hit. Dark horse teams could be the Raiders or the Bears?

  40. johnnythemoon Says:

    Contract is the problem

  41. Winny Testaverde Says:

Chris Godwin is one of the good guys. He was likely overpaid last go around as JLicht got sentimental and “heard” other teams were interested…like the Pats ( maybe they were ). The Bucs may have to offer to eat a good portion of these salaries as it’s done in MLB. Licht’s sticker price plus guarantee for contract extensions like this one, VV’s ( so undeserved & foolhardy ), AWJr’s ( highest paid defensive back ( not just safety ) at the time, Barely Try’n Zyon ( who is admittedly better this year )…Irving’s stunt double Gainwell at a high price, Anzalone the Italian Stallion/ matador )…you get the idea.

  42. SkunkApe Says:

Out of respect for Godwin, I’d give him a chance to go somewhere else. This team is a steaming turd.

  43. SB~LV 🏈 Says:

CG is in his last year as the player formerly known as Chris Godwin
He is playing at Sterling Shepherd level

  44. 40 year Bucs fan Says:

We need to trade average boy baker and draft a franchise qb, or baker said he wants to be a starting qb and was handed the job so maybe if I tell licht I wanna be a starting qb and that I have moxy maybe the doofus will just hand me the job.

  45. adam from ny Says:

so chris’ name is being floated out there on the market…

chris is subtly beefing, or being outspoken in team references with the media…

and sleepy zzz-rob is low key b!tching about chris…

    let the games begin

We need to trade average boy baker and draft a franchise qb

So, you think Baker is tradable with that contract? Nope. It’s sad, but they’re gonna need to live with that contract for another year or 2. Doesn’t mean they can’t draft a QB to replace him… but Baker is likely going to be our starter (barring injury) through at least 2027. We can hope he magically returns to 2024 form, or even 2023 form.

  47. zzbucs Says:

    Carter Bahns of CBS???????

    Really????

Who cares what this guy has to say….

    Nobody know him…..

Not even his mother, each time he calls him for dinner, shouts “HEY YOU 4 EYES COME DOWN FOR DINNER”

  48. Oxycondomns Says:

That was a mistake paying godwin that contract after that bad injury. People can call glazers cheap but Im pretty surprised at some of the contracts they have dished out recently . They seem to be too loyal to a fault.

  49. Let em bake Says:

Rams, Kc, or Seattle are other possible Godwin spots…

  50. Oxycondomns Says:

If the raiders with spytek and brady dont want godwin thats a sign that hes washed

  51. Wayne perez Says:

Baker is back so quit posting bullspit

  52. King of Citrus Park Says:

I think i see how it works. Sign a bunch of guys and you are stuck with them. Even though you are going to change your Coach end of year. Then kneecap the next coach by trading talent before he gets here. Then wonder why the new coach cant win with big money washed up guys and a few measly extra draft picks.

  53. OurYear Says:

Everyone b**ching about Mike Evans leaving because of Bowles. Think about it… you have enough money for multi generational wealth, you will still get paid A BUNCH of money in SF, yes you will pay higher taxes and you took less money, but your net worth is still MULTI Generational wealth. Ever think Mrs Evans said “ it’s time for a change”? You can only see the car parked overnight at Mons Venus so many times….

  54. jimmy Says:

the bucs need to get rid of robinson, what a terrible hire.

  55. Win in the Trenches Says:

make trades … bite the bullet now….

  56. Tom Says:

The Bucs would be nuts to get rid of the Godwin. When he’s on the field, he’s the most productive receiver they have. He’s a friggin first down machine. Wasn’t getting rid of Mike Evans a big enough blunder.

  57. Capt.Tim Says:

Trade players with big Contracts for draft capital.

Some of you think Mayfield wouldn’t draw huge interest?
    lol.
Do you really even watch the game?
The ONLY player on the team that matters, is the QB.
If you have a good one- you are relevant.
If you don’t, none of the rest of your players don’t make any difference.

Mayfield is a Probowl QB. Intelligent fans have seen his capabilities.
Two extremely incompetent Offensive Coordinators in a row have strangled the Offense.
Intelligent fans know that’s the problem. Idiots think Mayfield forgot how to play.
Despite what a few fools think, Mayfield has a very high value to a lot of teams.
    At any price.

  58. OrlandoBucFan Says:

Trading Godwin makes a lot of sense, either to New England or Pittsburg. The Bucs need to start collecting draft assets for our rebuild next year. Please bring in a new GM and coach.

  59. ryan Says:

Hahahahahahahahahahahaha almost thought this wasn’t satire. Robinson gone. That’s all to correct the offense. Nothing more. Godwin trade would be the dumbest move they could make lmao

  60. Capt.Tim Says:

    Tom,
You are right! Godwin is a first down Machine!
That’s why we are such a great football team!
I mean, where would we Bo without him? I bet we’d have the absolute worst record in the NFC!!
    Oh, right . .

So why do you think we should hold on to this old expensive WR?
The impact he’s having on our playoff bound team?

  61. ryan Says:

Poor Tim believes we have Andy Reid and an underperforming wide receiver is a reason to move on. Lmao. So happy none of us run the team
