Baker Mayfield said several times at his news conference today that the Bucs have had strong practices all season.
The problem, however, is that they’ve been a sloppy team in games, hence their said 0-2 record.
Mayfield was asked three times — in different ways — about what kind of urgency is happening this week at One Buc Palace, whether that be on the practice field or in meetings, or just a vibe.
In response, Mayfield kept coming back to the team having practiced well but they “just got to translate it to Sunday.”
Mayfield said “player accountability” is more apparent this week and if things aren’t going quite right, the team has to line up and do it again.
Yesterday, Todd Bowles said it’s business as usual at One Buc Palace, which is what scares Joe from a team on a 2-9 run.
Still, the Bucs have enough talent on offense to beat any NFL team. That’ll be put to the test again Sunday against the undefeated Vikings. Rest assured the Bucs will lose if they continue averaging 19.5 points per game.

I listened to it and based on what Zach and Bake said, it sounded like they didn’t take the preseason too seriously. Zach specifically was justifying the slow and sloppy start to the season beginning, guys playing together, etc.
Again, way too much chill at One Buc. Many of us mentioned this the last few years. Eventually, its W and L that matter. Some organizations it matters sooner than others. The Glazers are too chill with the Bucs. If chill works than great. However, it reall but it really hasn’t worked for us since TB12 retired.
Eventually, changes have to be made and usually organizations go in the opposite direction.
At this point, I’m not sure who our future HC should be. Just no McDermott or Tomlin.
I thought about Mario Cristobal??? Can he coach in the NFL? He was solid at Oregon and now he turned the U around.. With him do you get Jason Taylor??

The issue is the team hasn’t been able to overcome Bum Baker and his awful play which hasn’t given the team a chance to win.

What else is Baker going to say? “Wow, we had some really crappy practices this week. I hope we’re okay on Sunday”. Of course they’re going to say the things they’re saying.
As I’ve said for several years, it is pretty clear that they do not practice well. I think we have the players to be a pretty good team and could go far into the playoffs with some overachieving. But we’ve seen enough of the head coach to know that is not going to happen.
If any recovery is going to happen it has to start with the QB.

Seems like Mayfield gets jumpy under pressure, especially down the middle. Not scared (no shortage of guts), but he loses focus and can’t over press. If you wanna say he “should” be taller or “should” stay focused, great: that and $5 will buy a gallon of gas. This season is still going to come down the OL, especially on the inside.

Bailing and/or throwing hoagies from clean pockets will still be a thing. There’s 120+ games worth of evidence. No amount of placing any type of the accountability(that Baker has earned a share of) on all the external factors is going to change the way Baker plays the game.
OL blocking better isn’t going to fix his footwork & delivery platforms.
OL protecting him longer isn’t going to hasten his reads.
OL blocking better isn’t going to make the deep ball more accurate.
This from a guy who in his presser had the nerve to say “Guys need to do their jobs”, but still struggling with his own ball security. Baker works on himself, everything else should be alright.

Warren Brooks Lynch: You might be right, but my gut sense is this isn’t a play by play thing. If the OL can give consistent protection, especially in the middle, I think Mayfield’s play is likely to improve across all those areas. I’m not saying the OL is the problem, but they may still be the solution.

Somewhat agree, but not in the way you’d think. I’m of the mind it can’t get any worse, but part of me knows bad/worse has boundless ways of showing up in this game.
Look at NC State last week, led all game just to lose in the final second(literally) of the game because their QB wasn’t aware enough to realize he was up >2 the safety would cost and it’s result in the game ending on that play. Nope, got paws put on him, lost the rock, Vandy jumps on it and they win à game they never held a lead for 59 minutes & 59 seconds. Football has it all

Never understood how they will take last seasons recoded and apply it to the new season. If you ask any player or coach they do not do this. Our record is 0-2 not 2-9. This is a new season last season is gone just like the stats are. 0-2 sucks but it’s noo reason to cry and say the season is over. Here a perfect example my bmx racing season started off terrible but I’ve finished strong and took myself from last to sitting 10 pts behind 1st place. I could have cried like JOE and said oh my season is over and thru in the towel. Glad I didn’t pull a Joe. I’m nipping at the heals of 1st and I’m not going down with out a fight. It’s like this in any sport. Strong starts are nice but it’s about how you finish

I’ve decided that the biggest problem with the Bucs’ offense thru 2 games is Baker Mayfield. And it’s what’s happening on 3rd & 4th downs that drive that conclusion.
Bucs have had only 20 total drives in 2 games, resulting in 26 3rd-down and 1 4th-down opportunities. We’ve made 12 of those 27 opportunities, which is not all that great, but not truly terrible either. Our problem is two-fold: (1) our offense has only scored 3 TDs & 6 FGs on those 20 drives; (2) we’re shooting ourselves in the foot with avoidable mistakes (turnovers, sacks, penalties) that are causing our drives to end before we can reach the end zone.
Look at each one of those 3rd & 4th downs (27 of them) and you can see a pattern (trend?):
Bucs were 5-for-10 on 3rd-down & 0-for-0 on 4th-down in the Bengals game:
o 3rd-and-1: Baker short pass – Complete (17 yds)
o 3rd-and-4: Baker short pass – Complete (5 yds)
o 3rd-and-5: Baker short pass – Incomplete … FG good
o 3rd-and-9: Baker sacked, fumbles, Bengals score
o 3rd-and-14: Baker short pass – Complete (7 yds) – fumble
o 3rd-and-3: Baker short pass – Complete (30 yds)
o 3rd-and-3: Baker short pass – Complete (22 yds)
o 3rd-and-1: Gainwell run over LT (no gain) – Penalty on Bengals negated 4th-and-1 play & gave us a 1st down
o 3rd-and-6: Baker sacked … FG good
o 3rd-and-9: Baker short pass – Complete (11 yds)
So of our 10 3rd-down opportunities in the Bengals game, 5 were successful (all Baker passes). Of the 5 unsuccessful 3rd-down chances, we ran once (no gain), Baker was sacked twice, 1 pass was complete but short then Bucky fumbled, and 1 pass was Incomplete.
Bucs were 7-for-16 on 3rd-down & 0-for-1 on 4th-down in the Browns game:
o 3rd-and-13: Baker short pass – Complete (9 yds) … FG good
o 3rd-and-4: Baker short pass – Incomplete
o 3rd-and-10: Baker scrambles 14 yds
o 3rd-and-18: Baker deep pass – Complete (21 yds)
o 3rd-and-7: Baker sacked
o 3rd-and-15: Baker sacked
o 3rd-and-2: Gainwell run 4 yds
o 3rd-and-12: Baker deep pass – Incomplete (FG good)
o 3rd-and-1: Baker run up middle 3 yds
o 3rd-and-9: Baker scrambles for 9 yds
o 3rd-and-15: Baker deep pass – Incomplete
o 3rd-and-8: Baker deep pass – Incomplete
o 3rd-and-2: Baker short pass – Incomplete (FG good)
o 3rd-and-1: Baker short pass – Complete 8 yds
o 3rd-and-1: Bucky run off LT – 6 yds

Of our 16 3rd-down opportunities in the Browns game, 7 were successful (5 runs plus 2 Baker passes; 1 short & 1 deep). Of the 9 unsuccessful 3rd-down chances, Baker also scrambled once but didn’t make it, Baker was sacked twice, 3 deep passes were Incomplete, 2 short passes were Incomplete, and 1 short pass was Complete but came up short. On the 4th-and-1 Baker’s deep pass was Incomplete.
Overall (thru 2 games), Bucs have made 12-of-27 3rd/4th down opportunities. Baker’s thrown short for 6 successful conversions; he’s thrown deep for 1 conversion; he’s scrambled for 3 successul conversions; and the Bucs have run for 2 other conversions.
On the negative side, Bucs have blown 15-of-27 3rd/4th down opportunities. Baker’s been sacked on 3rd down 4 times. He’s failed to connect on 4-of-5 deep passes on 3rd/4th down. He’s thrown 3 Incomplete short passes on 3rd down, plus completed 4 short passes that came up short.
The sacks & the number of deep passes (that didn’t connect) are both concerning.
