Dan Orlovsky Torches Bucs Defense, Playcalling

So ESPN analyst and former Bucs QB Dan Orlovsky shared notes from his film study of the Bucs-Browns game.
That’s rare. Usually an analyst will discuss a couple of plays in detail or drop a hot take and some numbers.
But on The Pat McAfee Show today, Orlovsky pulled out the note pad and blasted the Bucs defense after saying the “panic meter” is “incredibly high” in Tampa.
“Bad zone defense. Bad zone defense. Bad pressure distribution. Too soft in coverage. Poor tackling. Poor tackling. Poor tackling,” Orlovsky read. “Poor tackling. Blown coverage. Defensively, the [Bucs’] breakdowns in the second half, specifically, were so significant.”
Orlovsky spread the blame, pointing out on film poor decisions by Baker Mayfield and playcalling that seemed to mystify him.
“They called like seven screens yesterday. None of them worked,” Orlovsky said of Tampa Bay. “He added that the Bucs needed to work intermediate routes more often.”
Joe looks over and over at the Browns’ winning touchdown yesterday and watches three Bucs defensive players fail to make a basic play. And the cherry on top is Zyon McCollum not going full speed and pulling up on a chance to cause a goal-line fumble like he’s seen Antoine Winfield pull off multiple times.

Offensive woes start with the Oline. As overrated as the dim Licht sitting in the GM chair. They can’t handle pass protection duties and it has a knock on effect with Baker who is scared to make his reads and panics. The woes continue with receivers not getting separation and finally an OC that is making Grizzard look like Bill Walsh.
Defense can’t tackle and once again there are pass catchers running WIDE AAS open across that Todd Bowles defense. It’s become a real hallmark of his vaunted defensive scheme.

Soft, lazy, unprofessional, bland, boring, stale.
With the game on the line he put it on HIS defense.
The defense that Licht constructed for him this offseason.
It just isn’t working and it never will. The evidence has been collected.
Time to call a spade a spade and move on already.
How many more years are we willing to waste? Are we giving up on the season?
Because keeping the HC\DC intact is doing precisely that.

Gosh it has been a terrible day since the Bucs lost to the Browns. I’ve never seen the volume of totally negative comments on this site. But I guess it’s human nature, if you win most people are happy, if you loose, everyone is heartbroken and in a very bad mood.
The only thing that can change all this is a win this Sunday against the Vikings. So I’m going to join the very few optimistic people who comment on this site, stay on the ship and hope for a win !! Maybe even a string of wins !!
It’s up to Coach Bowles and the rest of the coaches to help our Bucs overcome this and turn things around !!

You rarely seen Cousins/Penix throwing check downs
When they threw to Bijan, it was a pass out in the flats
Mostly they threw passes up field, especially over the middle

On the first offensive drive of game baker steps up in the pocket sees an open Egbuka but doesn’t trust his arm and checks it down to Otton. Btw bake had enough time to look across the field where 17 is Wide Ass open.
On the first defensive play of the game Bain is caught looking into the backfield and misses his assignment which is a bootleg action. Bain needs to be benched he’s clearly hurt and his confidence is at an all time low. Right now we’re witnessing how you take a 1st round talent and create a bust. Bowles needs to bench him and let him heal.

What pains me the most (other than once upon a time we had Liam Coen running the offense only to let him go for an air head of a defensive coach) is that you wait all year for football season only to watch this abysmal attempt at defensive coaching.
It’s like the players know this scheme is garbage so they don’t go all out and honestly I don’t blame them.

Barton is a bust. Luke is a shell of himself. Tristan is getting too complacent. Baker feeling heat even when it’s not there. Can’t/won’t step into a throw for accuracy down field. Bucky playing lights out but can’t block either. This offense is soft.
I have hope for the defense. Anzalone is down to his last life hopefully. B Mo has played pretty solid and actually kind of physical. Parrish needs to get healthy quickly. Bain has done absolutely nothing so nowhere to go but up there. But I feel like the defense is doing better than I expected.
But this offense looks like it doesn’t know what it’s doing on way too many plays and wasting a lot of possessions.

He’s not saying anything different than everything Joe Bucs fan (as well as Joe Bucs Fan) are saying. Literally everybody see it except that mediocre mess of a head coach.
The Bucs are now 2-9 since last year’s bye week and the next five weeks don’t look good. Even the Steelers look better than the bucs right now.
It might be November 1st before we see the first win.

Coen did no such thing. You don’t put up 4500 yards and 41 TDs dinking and dunking. If he did, Bucky would have had 800 yards receiving. He didn’t.
Evans got 1000 and Godwin was leading the league in WR stats through 7 weeks.
Robinson is now under the school of Todd. Don’t risk it, might be a 20-17 biscuit out there. How do deep passes factor into that which Baker uncorked a few… well he’s keeping those safe by throwing 5 yards deeper than anyone can get it.
Baker needs 5-20 yard passes. You saw him zip one to Hurst 18 yards. You saw him sidearm a crosser to Godwin on the money. He can do it, he just isn’t nearly consistent enough, not getting good enough protection and on some guys just aren’t getting open vs the D that is called.
Those aren’t excuses for Baker, he’s terrible right now, but as usual there is more than one culprit when assigning blame.
The whole team is playing like crap save for maybe 4 outta 22 guys. Todd Bowles everyone… and Baker. 2 guys turning a 10 win team into a 5 win team.

The problem is there isnt one problem. There are many it isn’t just clean up touch up. Or “so close” like baker says. he isnt close. his passes yesterday were crap. we went from fumbleitis to inaccurateitis. Totally inconsistent. Or consistently inconsistent, your choice.

If Tampa cut Baker next offseason (2027), his dead cap hit of roughly $50M–$60M would eat around **18% to 20% of a $300M salary cap**.
For comparison:
* **Russ / Broncos:** $85M dead hit on a $208M cap = **~40% of their total cap space blown**.
* **Baker / Bucs:** ~$55M dead hit on a $300M cap = **~18% of their cap space**.
The Realistic Playbook: Draft & Sit
The Bucs wouldn’t cut him right away anyway—they’d do what smart franchises do:
1. **Draft the Future:** Select a rookie QB in Round 1 on a cheap, controlled contract.
2. **Bridge with Baker:** Keep Baker as the starter for one more year to let the rookie learn without getting thrown to the wolves unless he is just completely outplaying Baker in camp.
3. **Painless Hand-off:** After that transition year, cut or trade Baker. His dead cap drops even lower, (the cap seems to always go up) the rookie steps in on a low cap hit, and the roster never collapses.
Denver took a 40% cap hit with nobody left to play QB; Tampa would be taking an 18% hit while transitioning smoothly to a rookie that is just standard NFL roster management.

I have only one more thing to say. Without A doubt, the Bucs are the most UNDERACHIEVING ream in the NFL. 11 straight games failing to cover the spread is firm. The only quest is where do they stand historically? Could they be the WOAT?
The Glazers must be proud. I fully expect them to make a public appearance in the near future.

@Mike… don’t kid yourself. There are only 32 HC jobs. Many people will want to take this Tampa job. The cupboard is not bare.
There are a lot of big egos in pro sports. Someone thinks they can make chicken salad outta this mess. How would the Browns or Jets ever get coaches if people were that scared of a big job?
Someone with vision could turn this around quickly. 4-3 D, a mean C, Barton to LG, a new MLB to pair with Trotter, a 225 lb bruising RB… most problems are solved if the new coaches know how to scheme something decent.

A few short weeks ago, we realists were labeled as haters. In truth, we saw an idiot show in motion and called it out. The rest of you, the gullible lot who still believe the internet is a purveyor of total honesty, chose to swallow the fiction emanating from Buccaneer Central.

I expected a meltdown this year and I am getting it. Every year Todd Bowles has been head coach the team has done nothing but play .500 ball. That is the ceiling for this team just like every team he has coached. He did better than .500 because first Dave Canalis and Liam Cohen are amazing head coaches that the Bucs had, which gave them up to become head coaches in Carolina and Jacksonville. We saw in the preseason how far ahead Jacksonville is of Tampa, and they are 2-0. Even Carolina stuck with QB Bryce Young who is okay is ahead of Tampa leading the South with a 1-1 record playing two tough opponents – Chicago and Baltimore, who they managed to beat. Tampa cannot beat anyone with the brain trust of Zac Robinson and Todd Bowles. Mark my words – both will be history at the end of the season as the Glazers don’t fire coaches mid-season but will fire them mid contract. It is the reason I refused to pay Sunday Ticket to watch them this year and just listen to them on XM Radio. I don’t need to watch this dumpster fire on TV.

I’m going to try to preserve my sanity by saying it could be worse…we could be Chargers fans! Bucs dropped two…one to what looks like a good team (Cincy) and one to an obvious POS team. Chargers lost to two (likeiy) sh!t teams…and they have a pretty good HC. The other NFC South dumpster fire (Atlanta) can at least use the excuse that they’re playing their third string QB…we got nothin’ except admitting the Bucs are currently a hot mess.

Doesn’t matter. The NFL is doing everything it can to not rely on the old-school fans who actually get mad about the play of the teams- I am sure they see that as an impediment to their money-making racket. I noticed all these pretty women on the field near where I was sitting by the tunnel yesterday 10 minutes before the game started. I realized they were WAGs and then player after player came over and hugged and kiss his own WAG, some giving them presents or roses—-10 freeking minutes before they were supposed to go to battle!!! I wanted to puke. Then I looked into it and it turns out that this is all part of an NFL scheme starting this year because women and young people (particularly young women) like seeing the players show their affection towards their significant others during the game. They are looking to expand on the Taylor swift magic that brought young women into the game. So, its obvious the NFL doesn’t want to depend on us men who get ticked off about their product, they want a different market that will drag us to see their cruddy soft product.

When you watch that play, in addition to the three players that whiffed on the tackle, you also see 3 players (21, 45 Trotter, and 27 McCollum) failing to swarm to the ball. They ease up as they see the three players converge on the TE. Then they try to get on their high horse to catch up only to ease up again around the 10-yard line. Unacceptable.
In a Monte Kiffin coached defense, all of the players away from the tackle would have been busting their arses to either help bring the ballcarrier down or be there with a devastating hit should he break a tackle. Not enough hustle from this defense, but it’s what Todd Bowles accepts. If he didn’t accept it, it wouldn’t happen.
It’s time for some tough love from the head coach and defensive coordinator. If a player is jogging during a play, have him jog his arse over to the sideline and stand by you for a bit.

Baker had a wide open receiver, in the end zone, to win the game – and he missed the throw. And it was an easy throw by NFL QB standards. It’s a throw any high school QB is expected to make every time. And our new franchise QB missed the throw to win the game. That comes after an entire summer of hearing about how he had been ‘disrespected’ by people questioning if he’s a franchise QB. It comes after he signed the largest deal in team history. It comes as he’s now the 3rd highest paid player in the NFL.
And he missed a throw every single QB in the NFL is expected to make 100 out of 100 times. One that wins the game.
And still not a single story about that.
Remarkable.
The one and only real storyline from the game, and nothing.

I have seen several stories mentioning Bsker’s bad day and horrific throw (s).
Arians should come back and clean up the mess he left over the rest of this season. Seems like the wheels are off the wagon, already. Then a new regime next year.

I remember in 2019 when JPP ripped into a few players (they were DBs) after a loss because they were joking around and did not seem to care. Then, a few weeks later when one of those players (Hargreaves their first round pick in 2016) loafed on a long pass play by the other team and allowed others to make the tackle- he was cut the next day by Arians. He actually called him out for loafing and said it was unacceptable. I agree that winning coaches do not tolerate a lack of tenacity on any play because it allows softness to overtake the team.

So he torched the defense and the play calling. That means the offense and the defense. Exactly.
We averaged 5.4 yards per carry and the Browns averaged 1.9. We held the edge in total yards. They out- passed us! How did that happen?
We haven’t had a rythm at all on offense. No sense of urgency, no commitment to gunsling- it’s like we’re afraid of an interception more than the requirements to get a move on. Pitiful, yet fixable.
Someone said run some hurry up even when we’re not in a hurry. That may be like hitting a reset button and it might help. But we better shake this mess up, and quicklike. I think we can.

You know well that Baker threw a perfect pass to Hurst that he dropped in the end zone with 30 seconds left.

If Hurst was Mike Evans, you’d expect him to be able to make that contested catch. The ball placement was great, but it was a very contested catch – and was certainly defensive pass interference on top of it. To claim somehow Baker is off the hook, as if Hurst, or anyone non-HOF WR is expected to make that as a routine catch on a wet field is complete nonsense. But again, it was DPI, and it’s bull that it wasn’t called.
But how does that excuse Baker from missing a simple pass to a wide open receiver on 4th down that every single QB in the NFL is expected to hit 100 out of 100 times?
Trying to pretend like Hurst not making a circus catch lets Baker off the hook is disingenuous, even for a Baker Boi.
Also, Boston didn’t break “3 tackles” you dope – that moron Analzone, in the process of missing the tackle, swung around and literally knocked Winfield out of the play. And I did yell about it yesterday. But that play didn’t cost the Bucs the games, the open WR in the end zone at the end of the game, the one Baker missed on a simple throw and catch, that is what literally cost the Bucs the game.

Anzalone, Boston, Winfield, and McCollum needs to be fined and publicly humiliated for that TERRIBLE football. No HOF for Winfield, to dang lazy. I had hope for McCollum after the Cincy game. Thought he played well. That video just makes me sick! And it’s so ToddBowle’s Defense!
