Joe hopes weird Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson has a nice Christmas present for Todd Bowles. That’s because the Bucs coach very likely saved his career.
If but for just a few weeks.
It was all over social media and #NFLTwitter the past couple of days. The Browns were just about done with Watson after he was downright horrible against Jacksonville last week, and has been horrible for a couple of years.
Watson, it was written, was on his last chance. The Browns had run out of rope. Watson was out of chances.
Bowles to the rescue! A game against the Bucs.
Bowles’ defense, known for blitzes so exotic it shames local dancers at clothing-optional establishments that mere mortals will never decipher it — and a run defense so impenetrable it reminds folks of the 1976 Steelers and Patton’s Third Army all rolled into one — often makes sad quarterbacks look fantastic.
Weirdo Watson is just the latest. He ran for 22 yards but threw for two touchdowns completing 24 of 30 attempts for 238 yards.
More importantly, Watson led the Browns to a win. Over Bowles.
So yeah, Watson’s job is currently safe. And Bowles’ defense, highlighted by sloppy tackling (and at times, no tackling), allowed Watson at least a few more weeks to keep his career afloat.

Todd Bowles saves a lot of careers, Joe. Not sure how he is still doing it as the Bucs coach. That experiment should have ended three years ago. I like Todd but he isn’t the type to be head coach and defensive coordinator. Every organization the glazers own, the fan base isn’t fans of. Money above wins.

Bowles defense over the years have made superstars of below average QBs. The best medicine for a struggling QB is to play the Bowles led Bucs D. Week after week year after year the same thing continues to happen. I can’t remember…. what’s the definition of insanity???

I’m pretty confident we don’t beat the Vikes next week. Will still watch, but setting expectations extremely low. Just too much stuff wrong with this team. 2020 was only 6 years ago…man, that was fun to watch as a fan for over 20 years. And I didn’t expect us to be NFC Champs this year, but I thought we would at least get a playoff berth. Now, don’t really see anything on this team that makes me believe we will even be a 7th seed. It’s sad.

He saves careers and helps quarterbacks set nfl records. If your quarterback is struggling many strategies will work. You could even put in your back up or start your rookie or udfa and it’s proven to give the Bucs defense a good scare

The Bucs have historically revived the careers of many washed out QBs. The amount of money they made Kirk Kissin Cousins is outrageous. It was the least TBowles & Co. could do for the city of Cleveland.

Morrison was lining up seven yards off his receiver in the second half, it looked like on TV, as the Browns marched down the field. Where are the oft-praised safeties? Anzalone sucks so far.

This was one of the hardest games for me to watch as a Bucs fan.
I have backed up Baker a ton. Today had me questioning everything. He sucks.
I have pumped up Kancey, doing nothing.
I have defended and talked up Barton, not good.
Had doubts about Zac and they are being confirmed. Can’t call the same run play 7 times.
I’m not even upset with Bowles. I guess when you look at 23 pts and Watson stat line it doesn’t reflect well but the offense are again the losers of that game. Why McCollum was 10 yards off when Bowles sent the blitz towards the end of the game… no idea what that is. Anzalone is garbage. Missing tackles everywhere and not just him.
I still think there is talent here but our HC/OC/DC for the last 2 years are terrible. Bowles sucking is maybe the only thing I am sure I am right about.
Apologies to the Baker bashers right now. I reserve the right to retract this if Baker somehow starts balling out like the 6-2 run or Coen year.

I’ve supported Bowles all the way, but enough is enough. His defense has been making garbage QB and struggling rookies look all-pro for the past 3 years and this is really just the proof that it isn’t going to change. I’m not trying to say he was the only reason for this loss, but the way watson has struggled with pressure and disguised coverages, had Bowles put out any decent game plan, we’d have shut him down instead of making him look like a good QB. A good team should not be constantly losing to teams with no QB, but that’s what keeps happening here

Baker fan since the Browns drafted him, but i have to be real. When he’s expected to succeed, he rarely does. It’s like his back has to be up against the wall to play his game. Maybe I’m overreacting… these coaches, they seem like they don’t know WTH they’re doing anymore, and I suspect it’s why we lost Mike Evans

If your at the end of your career come to Boweles team, where you can get paid, sit back eat avocado toast like a fat slob during training camp, fly around like Fabio and call ypurself a captain and virtually make the NFL world laugh at all your non hitting moves. Oh be a con artist QB. Mayfield you suck, your a no accountability QB who blames everyone but yourself. This team has some talent that’s wasting away.
