Yelling On The Couch Helps Todd Bowles Keep Fan Perspective
September 4th, 2026
Joe has told fans that Todd Bowles tunes out criticism at an extreme level.
He’s nowhere near obsessed with fan and media opinion like most NFL head coaches are.
Bowles gave a little insight into his approach to the noise during a sitdown this week with Evan Closky of WTSP-TV, Ch. 10.
One part of Bowles’ explanation for why public criticism doesn’t bother him is that he “grew up rough.” Since Bowles didn’t elaborate, Joe isn’t going to speculate on how Bowles defines “rough” and how it applies to many fans thinking he doesn’t have what it takes to win a Super Bowl.
But Bowles was more clear about how he views fandom and media takes as part of the game. And he understands because he’s a fan himself.
“I’m the No. 1 person that wants to win. So when we don’t win, I take it hard on myself. So I don’t have time to listen to anybody else,” Bowles said. And if people haven’t been giving me advice when I made it, they don’t need to be giving me advice now. So [fan and media criticism] really doesn’t bother me. It’s part of the game.
“The true fans are going to be the true fans. And just like everybody else, when I watch a different sport and my team messes up, I’ll yell on the couch. It’s not personal; so I don’t take it personal. And you just got to keep doing your job and you got to have better result.”
Joe is glad to hear Bowles doesn’t take media and fan criticism personally. He shouldn’t.
If Bowles did, he probably would have unraveled completely last season and been fired — a scenario that would have brought joy and/or peace to a lot of fans.

I just want to see him on the sideline just once or twice chew out a Ref on bad calls, jump up and down a little. Talk to your players more in the heat of the moment!! Go Bucs

He needs ear muffs a blindfold and a gag.
September 4th, 2026 at 10:40 am
The only way you know he wants to win is because he says so. I’ve been trying to be neutral on him, but, while he may think it’s his superpower to ignore the fans, it also shows his stubbornness toward admitting his way may not always be the best way.

His quote is very reveling of his overall mindset. “And if people haven’t been giving me advice when I made it, they don’t need to be giving me advice now.” To him and his thinking he has MADE IT. For some coaches making it requires super bowls, Todd is happy and content just being able to stand on a NFL sideline. No need to change anything because he has made it.

I don’t have anything personal against Bowles. He seems like a great dude. He is far from the worst coach we’ve had but I feel he’s hit his ceiling and it’s not good enough.
September 4th, 2026 at 10:43 am
Good for him!
Id love to see him get his hands on some of these posters, but I guess he just doesn’t give a sh!+ about the bafoons on this blog..Life’s Good Go Bucs!
September 4th, 2026 at 10:50 am
If he wants to win so bad, how about making in-game adjustments? Just once! He is the worst HC in the league at ignoring what he is seeing on the field and just goes with his plan, convinced it is going to work, all evidence to the contrary.
September 4th, 2026 at 10:54 am
Bowles DID unravel last year following the Thursday night loss to the Falcons. He also had a team that quit on him. Yet he is still here. Go figure!
September 4th, 2026 at 10:58 am
Jjuice32 – great job of exposing Bowles’ arrogance.
September 4th, 2026 at 10:58 am
I wonder if he goes on his favorite team’s fan websites and rants how the team needs to fire their coach.
September 4th, 2026 at 11:04 am
After not getting fired in 2025, he should feel zero pressure to do anything.
Just show up, say the same three phrases, make excuses, fire everyone else, storm out, declare victory.
The results are irrelevant to Todd. He’s completely Teflon in Tampa Bay.
Woke Glazer kids refuse to wake up to reality and only care about their image.
On any other team he’d be gone already. 2026 will be an absolute dumpster fire.

I’ve been married for 3 decades, what is this criticism thing of which you speak?
September 4th, 2026 at 12:02 pm
Don’t be so hard on yourself, Steve V.
September 4th, 2026 at 12:12 pm
He is in the bottom 5 among all NFL HC and likely dc as well….
Why he still employed is NOT because he is any good at it!
September 4th, 2026 at 12:18 pm
There will always be fan that will criticize coaches and management whenever a team loses. Just like there will always be fans that will be fans regardless. There will always be forums where the negatrons can post idiotic statements and immature name-calling as well.
September 4th, 2026 at 12:20 pm
“I’m the No. 1 person that wants to win”… says the HC going into his 10th season with a .446 career win% lol. Such a sad time to be a Buc fan.
September 4th, 2026 at 12:31 pm
“ And if people haven’t been giving me advice when I made it, they don’t need to be giving me advice now”
What exact has he “made”. ? Except 8-9, 9-8 etc etc.
September 4th, 2026 at 12:59 pm
@ permod… There’s nothing I or you can do about the team other then dont support it…Simple Crying like a 2 year old saying this guy sucks that guy sucks just makes everyone well look like bafoons… People actually believe they know what’s going on in the locker room or on the field..Its like me saying to all these whiners you whine so much cause your girl or wife is miserable with you, I dont know….All I know its a new season . Ill be watching and going regardless whos playing, coaching i..Its just a game…. You could be in Cleveland, Las Vegas, arizona,New York etc …There’s always someone who has it worst..
September 4th, 2026 at 1:09 pm
Steve V thinks if you aren’t a Pom Pom waiving lemming then you aren’t a “true” fan.
Some of us are tired of the kool aid drinking morons that tell us if we were over the top Polly positive somehow the team would win more.
It simply doesn’t work that way. Coaching actually matters. And Bowles sucks at both his jobs.
But hey, enjoy the sh@t show. It will be entertaining that’s for certain.
September 4th, 2026 at 1:50 pm
He seems like a good man but he’s got his pass rushers now so no excuses. He needs to establish a ferocious defense or time to move on. Nothing personal!
September 4th, 2026 at 2:03 pm
Well good, He won’t take the getting fired personal.
September 4th, 2026 at 2:08 pm
This is what Bill Parcells said is most important about winning football games.
Bill Parcells popularized the famous football adage, “It’s not about the X’s and O’s, it’s about the Jimmies and Joes.” This means that having talented players is far more important to winning games than having a complex strategy or playbook, as the team with the superior athletes and execution ultimately prevails.
Think about this and maybe all the talk about scheme, motivation, adjustments, etc, etc, goes out the window.
Go look up the defensive roster the Bucs had for the 2003 Super Bowl win with Todd Bowels as defensive coach. Plus a great QB with talent around him.
September 4th, 2026 at 2:19 pm
too bad he isnt obsessed with improving as a head coach.
September 4th, 2026 at 2:24 pm
his body of work is lacking
many have been fired for less
September 4th, 2026 at 2:26 pm
@ Cosmob.. Im Just a fan of football and been associated with it for over 50 yrs as a player and coach ..You live for the next play , you play meaningful games in December and im just not a negative dude especially following a game that I have no control over!! So you go on with your bad self and please please don’t beat your wife on Sundays!
September 4th, 2026 at 2:37 pm
the idea that todd isnt responsible or have anything to do with the bucs not progressing since he became head coach is the stupidest thing i’ve read here today. statistically the league has a few outliers on both ends and same average meat in the middle. the differences between players AND coaches make the difference and when your leader, aka HC cant make a difference after how many years you keep not looking at him as part of the problem?
idiotic.
not doing anything about the lame hc sends a message loud and clear. lets see if this version of the bucs plays down to his level like they did last year….
September 4th, 2026 at 2:51 pm
After this season, we won’t be watching him on the sideline at all.
September 4th, 2026 at 2:58 pm
Next home game, put a La-Z-Boy on the Bucs sideline, sit Toddy B down and UNLEASH THE MAN.
September 4th, 2026 at 3:02 pm
Of all the major sports franchises, coaching in football is probably the most important. A great one can make a good team great. A bad one can make a good team average or worse.
September 4th, 2026 at 3:05 pm
He belongs on the couch permanently. He sucks as a hc
And even worse as a dc
September 4th, 2026 at 3:13 pm
Like any job…If you want better results you have to do a better job!!! Almost every one here wants Bowles to do a better job of coaching.. It’s up to him to make that happen! We can’t help him!!
September 4th, 2026 at 3:14 pm
He is a calm man. He’s not going to change. I admire someone who does not try to put on a front.
I’m hoping he does extraordinarily well this year. I’ll be the first to apologize for the bad things I’ve said.
September 4th, 2026 at 3:25 pm
Bowles isnt worried about what fans say BECAUSE HE KNOWS HE WILL NEVER BE FIRED!
September 4th, 2026 at 3:34 pm
@Jjuice32 : well said.
Todd is a “happy to be here” kind of guy. Probably a nice guy outside of his coaching record. But his stubbornness and apathetic demeanor will eventually be his undoing. Much like Billy Napier. Only difference there was UF finally got the $tone$ to fire him.
September 4th, 2026 at 3:39 pm
Tom Landry is rolling over in his grave.
September 4th, 2026 at 4:20 pm
Play it better- coach it better – fan it better…
