Todd Bowles Explains Chill Sideline Demeanor

So why does Todd Bowles typically stay so calm on the sidelines, which is maddening for a lot of fans?
Bowles explained during a chat with Evan Closky of WTSP-TV, Ch. 10.
“I think when I first got here and somebody blew a play in 2019, and I went off the handle on the sidelines and not only did that guy panic, the rest of the defense panicked and they started playing cautious,” Bowles said. “And I realized then that I really can’t go off the handle like that because they respond how I respond. So, ever since then — I still get my point across, believe me — we talk all the time. And in meetings they get everything, and on the practice field they get everything.
“But when it’s time to play … you have to trust them and they have to trust you. So the calmness on the sidelines, if I don’t panic, they don’t panic. And that helps us.”
Joe gets the explanation, but it’s very interesting that Bowles said in the same interview that his top leadership figure, as far as building the Bowles way. was Bucco Bruce Arians. And No. 2 was Hall of Fame head coach Bill Parcells.
Both of those guys were explosive sideline figures.
Bowles added that seeing a poor response from his Bucs defense after he went off was “a revelation for me.” He said he saw the reaction and realized he needed to change things as a coach.

good stuff Joe…..to play devil’s advocate, sometimes there is a time not to panic but play with more sense of urgency. Hopefully, we see that more this year.

Todd Bowles’ story on getting Mike Evans his 1000 yard season in the Raise the Flags documentary is probably a lot closer to who he really is compared to what we see on the sidelines.

His calm presence on the sideline doesn’t bother me. Dungy also showed patience but had assistant coaches with fire on the sidelines. Arians coached with fire during practice which is more important to setting the tone. I was more concerned when it appears Bowles was too hands off of the offence. As a head coach you should have a direct pulse of the whole team during game time.

With Bowles laid-back approach, it appears from the outside like implicit acceptance of repeated mental errors by the defenseāone can hear him thinking āit is what it isā ā as if he has no control.

His soft players responded poorly one time so he packs it in?
The D is pretty different this season. He doesnāt think different guys might need a different approach?
Or how about you just do whatās natural to you in the moment and focus on the game instead of tailoring your demeanor to not offend the grown men making millions.
Iāve said here time and again that I respect Toddās ability as a player coach. Being fired up isnāt really about the players and motivation for me. Itās about awareness, staying on edge, ready for any situation.
Vrabel and Mike MacDonald running down the sideline as their guy makes a catch so as soon as he sees him downed he can signal TO as fast as possible. Thatās the urgency and energy I want from the coach. Can you imagine that from Todd? I know heās an old man and not gonna go running much but show me some life, show me you are into the game.

There’s that BUT again. One day Joe you’re gonna write something like ‘Joe gets Todd Bowles’ explanation, and loved it’. And every JBFer is gonna ask ‘OK, what did you do with Joe?’
I’ve seen dozens of cartoons of sayings folks put on their tombstones, and a number of them include the word ‘BUT’. My personal favorite though was from a cartoon of a wife & her friend standing over her husband’s grave, and the friend asks the wife ‘Are you sure those were his last words?’ … His tombstone read … ‘This meatloaf doesn’t taste right’.

Complete and total nonsense! NFL players DO NOT PANIC when a coach flies off the handle.
If it happens to be your style or personality to remain quietly focused on the sideline, why not just say that? Donāt try to turn it into some BS story about a revelation. Bowles wouldnāt recognize a revelation if it bit him in the butt. In fact, he is incapable of learning from his mistakes.
It is so hard to respect this men. His calm sideline manner was one of the few things I liked about him. And now he has to go and make it out to be something that it is not.

BA’s Red Pen … ‘itās his repeated folding in pressure situations is why Iām done with him’.
BA had a losing year in 2019 with Jameis at the helm. Heck in our 37-26 loss to the Panthers that year, Bucs turned the ball over SEVEN times. Thankfully though only 5 of those were INTs.
But once Tom Brady signed on, BA’s fortunes skyrocketed. Didn’t hurt that veterans like Gronk & Brown & Fournette joined Brady on the offense (as well as Wirfs). The defense already had a bunch of veterans on it, guys like Suh, JPP, Shaq, LVD, Davis & quite a few others. BA & Brady cleaned up that offense, but DC Bowles brought that defense up into the Top-10, in both 2020 & 2021. And we did very well both years. Interestingly I never saw BA get in Bowles’ defense; he let Todd run the show, so apparently BA had a LOT of confidence in Todd Bowles.
We lost a number of those veterans on defense starting in 2022 when Bowles took over as HC, then into 2023 & 2024 (Suh, JPP, Shaq, White, Davis, etc). Bowles’ defense hasn’t gotten the same results since then as we all know. His defense IMO doesn’t function well without a strong cadre of high quality, aggressive veterans to set the tone on the field. I’m really hoping that our additions this off-season bring us back to where we were in the 2020 & 2021 timeframe in terms of having a quality defense.

Our defense killed it right up until JPP blew out his shoulder in the middle of the ’21 season, has never reached that height since. I think this season may change that

Our front 7 will be slightly improved.
Our back 4 will be a dumpster fire…
Our starting safeties are solid but AWJ is injury prone and the depth is weak.
CB unit is a mess.

The Bucs front 7 “slightly” improved? Are you really this clueless?
They had a washed up LVD and Dennis as starting LBers. They got much better and younger with Trotter, Anlazone and Roseboom. Absolute upgrade.
At OLber they had YaYa, Reddick and Braswell. They added Bain, Walker and Mohammed. Massuve upgrade.

Back four will be a “dumpster fire”. More fantasy.
Two very good safeties in Smith and AW jr. Parrish will only get better in yr two. Zyon needs a bounce back year. SMB and Scott are great depth pieces at NB. Morrison just needs to stay healthy but the talent this there.
Is the secondary great? Nope. But calling it a “dumpster fire” is laughable.

His demeanor on the sidelines is irrelevant. Itās a complete non factor. He can stay stoic. Itās fine.
Itās all the other management items and attention to detail thatās the problem(s).

Itās not the calm demeanor that I mind. Itās the fact that this is the 3 most important hours of the week, and Todd has zero interaction with his players.
You never see him advising, motivating or coaching the team on game days. He just stands there, motionless, all alone. Thatās not leadership.

One dude wants to see our 62 year old coach running down the sideline w/his rebuilt on an explosive play our offense barely generates.
Another, who’d argue that a NT isn’t a DT thinks his loose, positional keen-jerk evals mean anything. I personally think he’s got a kink form prime numbers.
The rest of ya’ll want all this fire & desire like the football coach is supposed to be Teena Marie & Rick James rolled into one being, and I’m pretty convinced not 1 human body can have that much charisma(& vocal range)

I’m calling BS. Bowles has always been this way, even when he was the Jets HC. Plenty of articles and posts about this when he was with the NYJs. ts called situational leadership and he needs to learn how to use it with every player. If you go soft on everyone, someone is going to manipulate the situation. You also earn a lot of trust and respect holding people accounrable and sometimes you have to play bad cop. BA and Parcells never had a problem doing this which is why they were succeasful.

Once again WBL brings his selective reading to the convo.
I immediately followed the example of coaches running down the sideline by saying Bowles is old and wonāt be running.
Some of you have trouble reading between the lines. Why say what I said if it doesnāt directly relate to Bowles capabilities? Itās an example of what you see some of the best coaches in the league do. It shows they are tuned into the game, staying on top of every minute detail. As others have said, holler at refs, holler at players, eat less Kit Kats so you can run down the sideline. Pete Carroll can do it and heās 10 years older than Todd!
You canāt be lifeless on the sideline and then when your team is lifeless 6 times a year expect fans not to relate that to the guy leading the team. Believe it or not, all these players are human beings and sometimes they need a boost from outside themselves.

Rightly so, won’t even bother going into the cavernous dip in efficiency and effectivity that plagued our offense the moment Mike Evans’ collar
bone broke. How our defense had to bail out the offense oin NO, nor how we finish the NE & Buff games +2 in the TO margin only managing 3 points off 4 total takeaways. Guys don’t want to hear that stuff because the only thing they can say in return “yea, but todd bowles & the defense” and I just want to let ya’ll know that I’m here for you as a fellow fan š

Iām convinced Todd Bowlesā resting heart rate during a two-minute drill is somewhere between a monk and a sleeping sloth. Iām starting to think Bowlesā headset is actually just playing ocean sounds. The Bucs could give up a 98-yard touchdown and Bowles would look like he just remembered he needs to stop by Publix to pick up some cookies and milk.

I donāt understand the ppl that want to blame the offense or defense over the other.
All of it falls on Todd Bowles. He gets the credit for hiring Coen in ā24 and gets the blame for having it tank last season. All Todd Bowles.
If you want to double blame for calling plays on defense, thatās fine. But the end result is all on him.
That couldnāt be more evident in the coaching decisions this offseason.

A common over-generalization within this fanbase.
FG kicker shanks a kick, it’s not his foot, nor his leg, nor the elements, or the rush to block it, but it Bowles back to being all on Bowles.
That’s the consensus here, and it’s almost mind numbing. Look at the comments on the article of the Bowles-Barber interview, than look at the actual comment on the YT video and it’s night n day.
