“I Can’t Get Enough Of It”
August 27th, 2026
Allegedly, most NFL offensive linemen prefer run blocking. That’s not the case with Tristan Wirfs.
Wirfs was a mauling college tackle for a run-first program at the University of Iowa, but he jumped into a prolific Bucs passing attack, a pass-first offense, and sort of never looked back. Only once in Wirfs’ NFL career (2024) were the Bucs ranked among the top-10 teams in rushing attempts. Several times, however, they ranked near the bottom of the NFL.
“I feel like I’m a much better pass protector than I am a run blocker, just simply because of the fact that we did it twice as much,” Wirfs told the Vikes Verified podcast before the 2023 season.
“But it’s been really cool to kind of see my pass protection evolve. All these defensive ends have a plan, and you can throw a wrench in their plan with the smallest thing. And it’s cool to figure out those little tricks of the trade almost. I try to be a technician, as much of a technician as I can.”
Last week, Wirfs told Sports Seriously that he thinks the NFC South, along with being a “really solid division,” has been a great place for him to hone his pass-blocking skills. And he wants more stud pass rushers to face.
“From my experience, there’s been good edge rushers in this division for a long time now. And as a tackle, like I love that,” Wirfs said. “I love those matchups. Like I want to continue to grow and continue to be a good pass protector. I want to keep getting better and keep improving. So I think since I got drafted, it’s been fun.
“And it’s a passing league now, that’s what we’re asked to do. I love it. I can’t get enough of it.”
Joe often pines for the Bucs to run more behind Wirfs, so it’s interesting to hear Wirfs say he loves his pass blocking craft and can’t do it enough.
Mostly, Joe just loves how Wirfs is hungry to improve after having a Super Bowl on his résumé and All-Pro honors at right and left tackle.

OU doesn’t just send QBs to the league. They send some pretty good offensive tackles, too. Trent Williams with the Niners and Lane Johnson with the Eagles are just two. Both are great players who no doubt will be first ballot hall of famers.
Tristan is as good a football player as those 2. And that’s saying a lot. He just needs to put some more years in and he’ll no doubt be a first ballot guy, too. He’s the best player on this football team. And that’s saying alot, too.
