Baker Mayfield Talks About His Coaching Prowess
August 19th, 2026Bucs fans got real excited last week about undrafted rookie quarterback Jalon Daniels.
His talent was noticed quickly in the preseason opener. And it sure seemed like he and fellow backup hopeful Connor Bazelak made strides this summer.
Speaking on SiriusXM NFL Radio yesterday, Baker Mayfield talked about helping QB teammates develop. Yes, Mayfield is involved, and he thinks he’s darn good at one facet of helping young quarterbacks.
“I think the biggest thing for me is while I sit in the meeting room and while [Bucs QB coach] Chandler [Whitmer] coaches them really hard,” Mayfield said. “If I can tell they don’t understand it — and this is another thing that I think I do really well — is understanding how guys tick. If they don’t understand something, how can I say it and put it in words that they can get it, and get the best out of them. So just trying to be a good leader, a good example. You know, at a certain point they gotta go do it, but just coaching ’em up and cheering ’em on.”
Mayfield said always sharing his experience and making it meaningful.
“It’s just over communicating, you know, certain things like going through the reads of, ‘Okay, this is why I checked out of this’ and not assuming that they know why,” Mayfield said. “It could be a rep that I had six years ago that [explains] this is why I’m doing it a certain way; I’m keying a certain defender on different reads. Just continuing to spread the knowledge that I have that all the things that I’ve gone through different systems, and had a lot of different coaches teach it a different way.”
In addition to eight full years in the league, Mayfield is on his 11th offensive coordinator in the NFL. And he had diverse college experience. He’s a hell of a potential asset to young quarterbacks.

One hopes it’s only the young QB’s that end up on the 53 & practice squads.

Hope to see some of Jalon Daniels
Zero need in discussing his arm strength and release.
Keep a close watch on his ball placement.
Last game he was on target for a uncontested pass but… his passes were high , low , ahead and behind the WR even though the WR made the catch. On Sundays those balls will either get the WR creamed or intercepted.
Not trying to be critical but that’s the same thing opposing defenses will see on film.

Baker will be coaching at Oklahoma, or in the booth when he’s done . Too smart. Knows how to bring concepts down into digestible pieces to be easily understood. That’s what good teaching is.

Daniels played 6 years of college ball, he should be comfortable running an offense. Had he been 6′ 4″ instead of barely being 6′, would’ve only done 2 years of school. His lack of height hurt his career, but he has all the arm talent. And experience taking so many snaps in college. Look foward to seeing him the next two games.

11 OCs in 8 years is absurd.

My Prediction
If the Bucs have another losing season, they’ll reload the coaching staff and that coaching staff will reload QB. None of these QBs will be on the team next year.

Last thing I want to see is Bake on the sideline “Coaching” this year because of his reckless “get beat up” style of play. Even Super man Cam Newton’s body got beat down and he retired, and Bake is nowhere near Cams size. Leadership is all about winning, and the first thing is to actually be on the field to even take a snap, it equals not taking needless hit because of bravado. Sideline Coaching & Clip boards equal losses. Baker has one of the strongest arms in the league, so maybe use the arm more and not get beat up for nothing taking bravado hits, after all he does play QB.

He reminds me of a young Russell Wilson but taller.
And Tyrod Taylor.
I love the way he plays and moves.
You can tell he’s very smart.

Just pay the man for crying out loud.

August 1976: I don’t get any sense that Baker is trying to coach that aspect of his game. It’s more personality than technique, anyway.

Just Visiting the point I was making was about Bake being on the field and not getting beat up, being smart and not taking needless shots. He has one of the strongest arms in the league, he more than able to throw the ball.

Bazelak, also known as One Hopper, is stench.

August 1976: smart would be good!

I love Baker, but reading that paragraph, I couldn’t follow him at all. It doesn’t seem likely that his QB brethren would understand what he was saying either. Unless they all speak a unique language known only to qb’s.

August1976, Cam Newton played that physical style play after play, week after week, year after year. Baker does play physical but it’s not all the time. Early in his career, he didn’t play that way at all. His rushing stats reflect that. He’s starting playing that style more with Bucs.
