Mike Evans Thinks 49ers Have Added Years To His Career
August 4th, 2026
The greatest receiver in Buccaneers history was talking yesterday and he says he is blown away by the coaching he’s experiencing with the San Francisco 49ers.
(For those who don’t like Joe following Evans’ career, that’s fine. Of course Joe is going to pay attention to a true franchise legend still in the game and possibly still in his prime. Joe always has followed the antics and actions of well known former Bucs. It’s why Joe interviewed Donovan Smith yesterday.)
Evans gushed about 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, saying he’s experiencing what he never saw in Tampa or college.
“I see a genius,” Evans said of Shanahan. “I mean, he’s consistently one of the best playcallers in the league. I’ve been competing against him a long time and watching and admiring the game plans he puts together. And then just being around him this short amount of time I have been, I understand why he is where he is; it’s a reason why he has so much success.”
“Just the way he can explain the game on both sides of the ball. Like when we do meetings, he can just explain the game like I’ve never seen a coach do before — and it’s both sides of the ball. He’s an offensive coach, obviously, but the way he can explain to guys and break it down, I’ve never seen it.”
Evans reflected on his past and talked about his future. All these quotes came during a sitdown with KNBR Radio.
Why move on to San Francisco, Mike?
“I felt like it’s what I needed at this point in my career. I really do,” Evans said.
“I love Tampa. I’ve been there my whole career, 12 seasons. I love the fanbase, love the people in the front office, my teammates. But I just felt like it was time for a change. And this team, it definitely feels like it rejuvenated me and potentially added some years to my career. We’ll see down the line. But I love it here so far. Great roster, great coaching staff, great franchise. It’s something I wanted to be a part of.”
Evans added that talk of 49ers tight end George Kittle recruiting him was overblown. He said joining the 49ers was about the team makeup.
“They checked all the boxes: try to win now, quarterback, great skill players, great defense, great coaching staff, and then just a great organization,” Evans said. “And then a bonus, the weather — that I didn’t even know about.”
Joe thinks the Bucs can handle the loss of Evans on the field, but that loss would be felt if the Bucs make the playoffs this season. Joe, however, remains a little sad that Evans ran away from Tampa for less money.
Joe also is somewhat frustrated because the whole truth of Evans’ departure has yet to be revealed.

For God’s sake! MIKE EVANS IS GONE! LEAVE HIM GONE!
He should be getting precisely as many articles on this page as Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
That is, NONE. He’s a WR for a different team on a different coast who quit on us! Good riddance!
August 4th, 2026 at 9:08 am
Already injured and most likely someone that at his age for a WR1 you cannot count on consistently. However, I do see his point of going from one of the worst head coaches in the NFL to one of the best.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:10 am
He makes it sound good but he’s already hurt..
August 4th, 2026 at 9:10 am
The last sentence
Why keep it all such a secret from the get-go? Unless it’s something deeply personal or controversial….
I can’t imagine it was just about football. And if so, I believe those to be selfish reasons
And still, how do you go in one short year from wanting to be a “Buc for life” to get me the F outta here, I hate flying, but I’m going to a team that’s gonna fly more than anyone and I’ll take WAY less money and get double taxed and Purdy over Mayfield. It’s all very weird with Mike tbh.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:13 am
So he praised –
The Tampa fans.
His Tampa teammates.
The Tampa front office.
Left out? Coaching staff. And what he’s praising in this interview is coaching.
So, yep – he left primarily because he lost faith in Todd Bowles. Glazer family- please pay attention. Your idiotic decision to stick with this clown is the reason he took a giant paycut and ran to SF.
It’s Todd “3rd and 28” Bowles and his staff. That is why.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:13 am
I don’t know if there’s any more truth than Evans really wanting a change of scenery before his career is over with. That and the 49ers team makeup. I understand sports is different, but when people get their first job out of college and they’re with that employer for many years, it’s natural to wonder what it would be like to work for a different employer.
I hope I’m proven wrong, but I don’t think the Bucs are as the 49ers in making a deep playoff run.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:15 am
The grass is always greener on the other side! ( He hasn’t got his tax bill yet)
August 4th, 2026 at 9:15 am
Mike Evans may be right. He also could be talking things up to convince himself that these things are true. Time will tell. Mike is probably more right than wrong especially regarding Shanahan. The 49ers problem is that John Lynch has not proven to be a great GM in putting together a team. So, we will see.
And by the way, if you don’t want to read it, then don’t. Click on it anyway so Jose gets the pennies but then just move along.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:18 am
I agree with Stormy. This was definitely an indictment of the coaching here in Tampa. I see another middling season and a buyout coming. That may be why the Licht company is being cagey about contracts right now.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:19 am
“Joe also is somewhat frustrated because the whole truth of Evans’ departure has yet to be revealed.”
Look no further than the ineptness, incompetence and stifling arrogance of Bowles and Baker. If you have faith in your HC and QB, you don’t leave to make less money.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:19 am
Joe, if you don’t realize that Bowles is the reason Evans left by now, especially after writing this article, it ain’t never gonna happen.
Mike praised everyone except the coaching in Tampa.
He explicitly praised the head coach in San Francisco and stated he is happy to work with his new HC.
What more evidence do you need? Bowles is the causal link. Period.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:20 am
Coaching matters, especially to veteran players.
Ive never seen a team try so hard to build a strong offensive roster and then completely waste the entire process by constantly changing the play caller. Its unfathomable. Coen dropped into their lap and they were either too proud to admit the mistake of extending Bowles or too scared of the backlash of firing a minority head coach to make the smart move.
That decision will haunt this franchise for a long time.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:21 am
Coaching.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:22 am
Can’t wait to see him in the ring of honor but I do find it a little funny that he’s already hurt as well as many of the 49er WRs too. Miss the guy but won’t miss him limping off the field 3 times a game.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:23 am
I still follow him. He gave us too many good years.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:26 am
The truth is very obvious…he had the chance to look around and compare what he knew from the inside, and he decided to move on.
He knew we were going to have a “check and see year” – hence no signings of Bake and Vea and 4 middle of the pack FA signings – and he didn’t want to risk circling the drain with the Toad at 32 years old, plain and simple.
Also noted is the heavy admiration of his new coach as a teacher on both sides of the ball, you know like a Head Coach…. never heard him say that about the Toad
August 4th, 2026 at 9:30 am
Gotbucs and stormy – 110%.
Easily the dumbest decision or non decision I’ve seen the owners make.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:30 am
Mike mentioned QUARTERBACK AGAIN!!!!!!
he’d rather play with Brock and not baker!!!!!…that speaks volumes…shots fired at baker, yet again!!!!
GO BUCS!!!!!
August 4th, 2026 at 9:31 am
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU MIKE!!!!!
hopefully, we’ll see you in the playoffs
GO BUCS!!!!
August 4th, 2026 at 9:35 am
I hope Todd and company turn it around and have an amazing season but I won’t be sad to see him go if the opposite happens.
Mike went from a defensive-minded HC whose defense has been bottom third of the league more often than not to an offensive minded HC that seems to pull out double-digit wins most seasons even with tons of injuries. It’s shocking he left and feels the way he does. 😏
August 4th, 2026 at 9:35 am
Hey Marty …
Lighten up. How could this possibly make you angry? Are you tied to a chair with a series of Mike Evans stories glued to your face? Don’t like it? As they say in football, Pass!
Some of us enjoy hearing how a player of Evan’s magnitude is doing elsewhere.
Moreover, this site rarely displays articles that consume more than a handful of paragraphs. With that comes more stories, more often, and in your case the ability to skip over your disdain of Evans and scroll to the next topic in less than a second.
Keep em’ coming, Joe. When reading between the lines, does this story not hint at the coaching prowess of Todd Bowles, or at least Evans’ implied grading of Bowles vs Shanahan? That’s news!
And we’re all waiting for the smoking gun; what really prompted Evans’ abrupt departure?
Personally, I’d rather read more about Mike than the upcoming, but necessary status quo articles about who looks good in underwear.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:37 am
@StormyInFl, @Jack Burton Mercer, @CosmoKramer, @gotbucs, and @CosmoKramer can all see the obvious. Hard to make it any more clear without just coming out & saying it. And would bet the farm he is FAR from the only one with that opinion of todd.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:38 am
So what is the whole truth on why Evans left. Does Joe know but is just not saying to protect Evans and the Bucs organization. I hope one we get the truth because it seems like there is more to the story than what has been told.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:45 am
After that interview, if people can’t finally understand why he left they never will.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:48 am
Critical thinking, observation, & inference are dying traits lately, so it’s certain many still won’t get it.
August 4th, 2026 at 9:51 am
Apparently energize + rejuvenate = rejuvenize. Who knew?
August 4th, 2026 at 9:55 am
“Joe also is somewhat frustrated because the whole truth of Evans’ departure has yet to be revealed.”
“Joe” (I don’t remember which) said on last weekend’s WDAE show to the effect that “When he said it was a family matter, it really was a family matter.”
Evans remains dead to me until that comes out. Joe clearly has sources, but until I know what this other factor is (and provided I agree with the decision — which if it really is family, then I likely would), the guy is still dead to me. He quit on us, and as another commenter pointed out… Evans mentioned a great coaching staff in the other city by the other bay, but not the coaches here.
Now… for God’s sake… let us all move.. the h&ll… ON!
August 4th, 2026 at 9:58 am
Kind of looks like the organization in general, though mostly coaching
August 4th, 2026 at 9:59 am
Obvious
18 games under 500 as a HC radio
Or Offense winning HC Shannan
August 4th, 2026 at 9:59 am
Hey man I thought Mike wasn’t a diva, it sure seems like he is.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:00 am
If you think about it, he’s right. In his time with Bucs, outside of B.A. what coach has he ever had that was an offensive genius or mastermind?? And I’m not sure B.A. took the time to breakdown an offense or defense. I hate he left but oh well, he’s gone and I hope we thrive without him.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:06 am
Todd Bowles Dumb
Kyle Shanahan a Genius
That’s all you need to know, according to Mike.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:07 am
One year, this year
and MAYBE 2027 ..
ME is walking IR waiting to happen.
Not ragging on him but it’s just the truth
August 4th, 2026 at 10:14 am
Yeah Bee always hung up on Baker. Never mind that he took a 4 win season and turned it into a 10 win season in his FIRST year. Never mind his SECOND year he led the league and was a top 5 qb. Never mind all that. All you idiots can do is whine and cry because he beat the snot out of your college team 10 years ago. Get a life.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:16 am
Shanahan got whipped last year by the Buccaneers without evans. What has the genius ever won? No Superbowls and blew a three touchdown lead in the second half. Got his for next month quarterback sacked when they had nothing was run out the clock. OVERRATED !
August 4th, 2026 at 10:17 am
BuccoMarty——
So Evans is “dead” to you?
And if his decision for leaving doesn’t meet with your approval, he will remain dead? Your approval?
I bet that keeps him up at night.
Evans is alive and pertinent to me (sure he cares little about that as well).
Anyway …
Keep the Evans stories coming, Joes!
Love em’!
August 4th, 2026 at 10:34 am
Why does Joe Dance around it like many others
EVANS left because the Bucs Kept Bowles and he had enough
BOWLES IS NOT A BAD HC
BUCS HAVE ISSUES IT STARTS WITH BOWLES
August 4th, 2026 at 10:39 am
People seem to think the 49ers are this great championship team. Keep in mind that the last time they won a Superbowl, their QB was Bucs ex-QB, Steve Young. Yeah, the Bucs have won two Superbowls since then.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:43 am
Nothing him or anyone else can will convince me that our current head coach had nothing to do with him leaving. To take less money in one of the highest taxed and highest cost of living states in the nation speaks volumes. Sure, he can afford it, but he wants another title and knows this team has zero chance of that with the “defensive guru” in charge.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:45 am
As I recall, the first explanation Evams ever gave was “family reasons”. If/when the full story comes out, I suspect that will be the bottom line.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:46 am
He’s dead to me. Not my problem.
🔥 LFG!
August 4th, 2026 at 10:57 am
IMO, The key thing he said as he was checking the boxes about why the 49ers was that they are all in to win now. I think he sensed that the Bucs were not in that mode. It’s being proven as such right now with the refusal to do something to keep Vita Vea in the fold and signing Baker long term.
August 4th, 2026 at 10:59 am
I love ME13 and wish him well…
But did anyone else notice he is already injured and nursing another “soft tissue” leg wound?
LOL!
That didn’t take long now did it?
August 4th, 2026 at 11:05 am
I love Mike, and he is NOT injured. Fake news.
August 4th, 2026 at 11:10 am

Fake news?
Maybe.
Would it surprise me if ME13 went out and played hard and made a few “circus type” catches during the softest part of training camp – then fake a leg injury in order to take the rest of the preseason “off”?
No.
Would it surprise me if ME13 is already nursing a minor injury?
No.
If you have any supplemental proof that I have not yet seen – please present it.
Would love to see it.
August 4th, 2026 at 11:18 am
Mike felt we were in a rut a .500 team in a bad division. He does not think we have a chance and knows he has 2-3 yrs left.
August 4th, 2026 at 11:23 am
I think he made it pretty clear that coaching played a major part in his decisionso what is the mystery. It’no surprise to hear a player say Shanahan is a far superior coach than Bowels. More than half the coaches in the NFL fit the same description
August 4th, 2026 at 11:23 am
JOE SAYS:
Joe also is somewhat frustrated because the whole truth of Evans’ departure has yet to be revealed.
JOE…. he just told you.
Occam’s Razor is a problem-solving rule of thumb stating that when presented with competing explanations that fit the facts equally well, you should prefer the one that makes the fewest assumptions.
I take him at his word. He wanted to move on to a better ran organization, the money did not matter. In his mind 49ers checked all the boxes.
August 4th, 2026 at 11:26 am
The Bucs have a better chance of going to the playoffs this season than the 49ers. If that was his reason, he made a mistake. They are the oldest team in football, which is why they have so many injuries year in, year out. Their entire wide receiver room is already injured or another injury waiting to happen. They just signed Deebo, another injury prone receiver.

He had plenty of great things to say about many people. How do you get “diva” from that?
August 4th, 2026 at 11:40 am
I like Mike as any true Buc fan should but still scoffed at that title! Added years to his career after he already injured his leg in training camp as he seems to every year now? I don’t know maybe it’s a ploy to get out of practice without losing money. I sometimes think of LeBron when it comes to him King Flop
August 4th, 2026 at 11:41 am
49ers paid less money because they realized they would probably only get 7 games out of him and the ones he does play in will bring on the tap on the helmet to come off the field after a route or grabbing his leg coming off the field.
It does seem like his leg injury has moved from the back of the leg to the front of the leg in San Fran. I hate the 49ers so good luck (not really) with all that drama with Evans.
August 4th, 2026 at 11:51 am
Mike wants more targets and has little to no competition for them in the wide receiver room. Unlike here, where he has tons of competition. It’s a pretty simple concept and he’s thinking in terms of the HoF. He already has a championship though obviously wouldn’t mind another. And yes, the Bucs do have a better chance of making the playoffs. The Rams and Seattle are in San Fran’s way to win their division. They could easily finish third again, and go 0-4 against those teams leaving them with a lot of ground to make up.
August 4th, 2026 at 11:53 am
Actually, he did not.

“He should be getting precisely as many articles on this page as Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Of course the moisty boyyz will never say this about Mayfield because once he’s gone they go where he goes and we’ll be so much better off for it. He didn’t quit on us he quit on Bowles Mr. 3rd&28
August 4th, 2026 at 12:04 pm
none of you guys picked up Evans’ talk about the weather. I grew up in the Santa Clara Valley about 5 miles from 49 stadium. It was routine to hear the weather being touted as best IN THE WORLD! I loved Tampa area in my 25 years there, but the weather can really get to some people. Evans and his family (like everyone else) have to live in whatever environment they’re in 24/7. That’s a big deal to some/many people.
August 4th, 2026 at 12:09 pm
I think he said it Joe. I agree he praised all but the Coaching Staff and the Glazers.
He is also correct about the 49niners. All accurate statements . I am sad too he left, but as he said he went to a better overall Organization. I have been sad however can’t blame him at all.
August 4th, 2026 at 12:13 pm
Good for Mike, I’m glad he’s happy
August 4th, 2026 at 12:20 pm
Well, now that I actually went back and read everything he said reading and comprehension is in order. Can you guess what word he said that was conveniently left out of the title that shows that he’s not sure but there’s a chance that they’ve added years to his career??? Also as it has been posted that he praised everyone but the coaches. Read between the lines people.
Moisty Boyyz you should all pay the Joe’s to get him to stop posting stories about a former great and still Buc’s icon. You clowns have no say so in anything Buccaneers because you Browns fans has beens only follow the never will be iconic Baker Mayfield
August 4th, 2026 at 12:29 pm
When Brady was here he was ticked off by the preparation during the week done by the coaches. You notice the only success the bucs have had under bowles is hiring a offensive coordinator outside the organization with a different mindset when it comes to preparation . Bowles and the we do what we do mentality isnt going to get it done. I watched bucs amazon prime raising the flags where cheetah had 200 yds and 2tds in first half and bowles said I know what to do the next time we play them. How about knowing what to do the first time you play someone?
August 4th, 2026 at 12:37 pm
Until he goes on the hall as a BUCCANEER, we shouldn’t care less about Mike. He made his choice and time will tell if the correct one, but for now he’s the enemy and hope he and the Niners struggle.
GO BUCS !
August 4th, 2026 at 12:46 pm
Whe SF came to Tampa last season, this coaching staff beat the genius coach
August 4th, 2026 at 12:47 pm
What Evans walked away from in Tampa: A head coach who has never exceeded 10 wins despite playing in the weakest division, one and done in the playoffs if you even make them, a revolving door at OC, a perpetually weak defense, team injuries history, and yes the weather. Evans has maybe 3 (?) years left in his career, he wants to make them count.
August 4th, 2026 at 1:10 pm
You know people usually take on the habits of people that you worked for and mentor you. I can’t say that Todd Bowles just threw away all the knowledge he gained from his coaching tree, and to tell you the truth it is quite impressive:
Bill Parcells
Andy Reid
Bruce Ariens
“Parcells first noticed Bowles in the late 1980s when Bowles was a starting safety for the Washington Redskins. Parcells, then coaching the rival New York Giants, later noted that he could see Bowles’ coaching potential even then, observing how he handled all the secondary calls and adjustments on the field.”
Could it be that he just was not equipped with the players to make a solid defense? If so then that falls on Licht and Glazers.
I know I will get rocks thrown at me, but those 3 coaches mentioned above know a little about football. Put Shanahan on the Bucs would he of done any better with the players he was provided? Maybe, but not much better.
August 4th, 2026 at 1:11 pm
If Baker doesn’t overthrow him in Detroit, Mike is still in Tampa today.
August 4th, 2026 at 1:15 pm

ME in San Francisco is very disappointing and hard to take. And naturally he would make the uplifting comments about his head coach, quarterback and teammates.
The question is, who’s gonna step up and evolve into the next version of ME 13 here in Tamp Bay. Imo I think it’s pretty obvious , it’s EE2 !!
The Buccaneers have the potential to once again be a great team and make a playoff run.
Win 10 and we’re in !!
Go Bucs !!
August 4th, 2026 at 1:54 pm
I’m assuming he hated having to keep on switching through offensive coordinators he wants one that’s gonna put him in a good spot all the time every time not one that’s thinking more about his defense trying to stop the run and no passes But that’s just what I think he wants to be somewhere where offense runs the building not defense
August 4th, 2026 at 2:18 pm
Simply got tired of throwing up in his mouth Every Time the mental munchkin “Tadtard Bozo Blows” spoke…
If you actually believe that he didn’t leave BECAUSE OF Bozo Blows and the ABSENTEE OWNERSHIP, then YOU are in denial. None of YOU are REALLY THAT STUPID… Well… not THAT stupid.
Continually IN YOUR VERY FACE, waisting players and FANS Valuable Time and MONEY!
“ESPECIALLY WITH SUCH A FAILED HEAD COACH”.. That’s BLATANT Stupidity!
And a Clear indication that as soon as he found out that this season WOULD BE WASTED, he left for what ANY INTELLIGENT PERSON WOULD! So Many of YOU seem to be so “OBVIOUSLY JEALOUS” of Mike’s courage of conviction. I’m sorry but that doesn’t make him stupid, weak, or a trader.
HE WAS BETRAYED! JUST LIKE YOU AND ME….
I’ve GOT TO SAY, what’s CLEAR is that “sheeple” are a Real Thing! Proven on the daily right here on this blog..
August 4th, 2026 at 2:20 pm
Can’t wait until we find out why. I really don’t think dissatisfaction with Baker or Todd were the primary reason. (But obviously Bowles SHOULD be a factor.)
My best guesses:
1. Ownership issue (Notoriously low player report card. Maybe Mike asked for changes in player perks and was denied)
2. Family health issue that remains private. (Medical specialists)
3. Anonymity- as much as he loves the fans, he’s a huge fish in a small pond here. Hard for him to go anywhere with the fam and not be approached, which becomes more difficult now that his kids are growing up.
Darkhorse: Something political. (Mike was outspoken politically for a brief period of time and had remained virtually silent since. Could want his kids to grow up in a city that more closely aligns with his views l, but doesn’t want to burn bridges or get tied up in a PR mess)

Good for Mike. He found a team that will blow smoke up his a$$ and pretend he’s the missing link.
He’s got a new .550 coach who can’t win if they aren’t ahead entering the 4th quarter
Trailing by 8+ points in the 4th quarter:
The 49ers hold a dismal record of 0–51 in regular season and playoff games under Shanahan when facing an 8-plus point deficit entering or during the final period.
Trailing by 7+ points entering the 4th quarter: Historically hovering around 1–39 or 0–30 depending on precise point-threshold cutoffs, highlighting a severe difficulty in overcoming one-possession-plus deficits with 15 minutes left.
I’m not trying to put Shanahan down but if you think Mike’s going to get better at this point in his career and the 49ers are going to waltz into the post season then you may be drinking the wrong koolaid
August 4th, 2026 at 2:37 pm
Did anybody that’s NOT in denial, read HIS WORDS? It’s pretty darn REVEALING if you’re able to comprehend his description.

If I remember correctly and I do, a lot of analysts said that Evans did not go for the ball and no doubt he should of. Another words he chickend out

First off, I knew one of you dopes would bite. But wow, your revisionist fake news version of events, just shows what clueless morons you Baker Boi(s) are.
Evans literally fully extended on the play to get the ball and brought it in, only to have it come out when he broke his collar bone as he hit the ground.

I just learned that Mike Evans is injured…
…but it has nothing to do with the substation near their practice facility. 😄

COACHING PERIOD

@Obvious
Yeah no $#!t. That is indeed an OBVIOUS reason. Everyone knows Bowels sucks and its been talked about to death. Spin it up 1000 more times if it makes you feel better for all I care, but thats not what Im talking about. I’m SURE it was a major factor in his decision, but Im speaking to the mystery reason Joe keeps saying has not been revealed yet. In this post Joe straight up said
“Joe also is somewhat frustrated because the whole truth of Evans’ departure has yet to be revealed.”
He’s implied before that the mystery reason is not Bowles. Thats what I want to know and speculate about.
I agree we absolutely need a new coach, but dont @ me with some take thats been posted here 4000 times per day.

Joe’s words imply there is a reason not yet spoke of or intimated. Geesh, this board is slow…
August 4th, 2026 at 7:21 pm
And Joe recently qualified that reason as nothing to do with mayfield..
August 4th, 2026 at 7:22 pm
Wow, rod. You’ve lost a step. You sound vaccinated …
August 4th, 2026 at 8:16 pm
Apparently, Mike is switching things up this year and he’s sitting out because of a quadriceps injury instead of the usual hamstring.

It’s Bowles – everyone knows it’s Bowles.
On to 2027…
