Shady McCoy Tired Of Baker Mayfield Hype
July 23rd, 2026Former Bucs running back Shady McCoy has a bug up his behind about Baker Mayfield.
Shady doesn’t often waste an opportunity to take a swipe at Mayfield. That continued on a recent edition of “Speakeasy,” the social media Sunday-through-Thursday show hosted by former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho.
Acho asked Shady, “Love or hate Baker Mayfield?”
Shady said “hate.”
But he softened his stance, saying he didn’t hate anyone and he didn’t think it was right to “hate” Mayfield.
What Shady does hate is that he believes Mayfield is overhyped. Shady believes that major national media talking heads and former players seem to want to blow up Mayfield but don’t give Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson their rightful due.
Folks have their views backwards, he said.
“It’s people like you,” Shady said, pointing at Acho. “It’s people like Acho, Colin [Cowherd], sometimes Skip [Bayless]. Y’all just be saying the craziest stuff. And then look, y’all blow people up like Baker Mayfield.
“Baker Mayfield has been above average for a very long time. Every once in a while, has a really good year to make people like y’all talk about him. He’s a little-ass dude, right? That somehow beat the odds as a walk-on, and he gets picked first overall.
“I knew this [shat] was crazy when I seen him trying to, like he was acting like he was Brett Favre. Brett Favre!”
Shady said he believes it is shameful how guys who played in the league hype Mayfield to the same level as Jackson.
“You hype him up like the real deal,” Shady said. “See, the problem is when dudes [are] regular or above average, we want to hype them up.
“And y’all rather support and give love to dudes like Baker Mayfield or Sam Darnold, but disrespect guys like Josh Allen [and] Lamar Jackson. These dudes [are] not on the same level.”
Shady’s last sentence is probably accurate. Mayfield isn’t Allen and he isn’t Jackson. The thing is, Joe doesn’t recall ever hearing anyone suggest Mayfield is better than those two, so Joe doesn’t know where Shady is getting that noise.
Joe has compared Mayfield to Jackson (never wrote he was better) because Mayfield has one less playoff win than Jackson but you’d never know that with how much people slurp Jackson.
Shady may not actually hate Mayfield. But Shady certainly is triggered by Mayfield for some reason.

Totally Agree with Shady! #6, is just a hype man, nothing more, nothing less, like the song says…..”Don’t Believe the Hype”!!! & many of You do, and will be disappointed after the year is done, with a maybe four to five win season.
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:17 am
I think 4-5 wins is a bit of a sour take. 8-9 wins is reasonable. With a better HC you could expect 9-11 with this roster, but Todd….. Shady doesn’t like the Baker hype…. Who cares what Shady says. Certainly not me.
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:24 am
Shady is a friend of Mike Evans and knew about Evans leaving before most everyone. What did Evans tell Shady about Mayfield?
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:29 am
Shady is spot on!!!…
baker is and always has been overhyped…lamar and allen both have MVP trophies while baker is still living off his college “success”…baker is slightly above average…extremely mid lol
GO BUCS!!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:30 am
What did Evans tell Shady about Mayfield?
he’s mid lol
GO BUCS!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:35 am
Same Darnold should get more respect than Allen, and Jackson. Last time I checked he lead his new team to a SB victory. That’s something those other over hyped QBs haven’t accomplished.
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:41 am
While I don’t disagree with McCoy, as of right now Baker Mayfield is the quarterback of my favorite NFL team. McCoy can shut his pie hole about my quarterback.
It’s kinda like what Sapp told Cam Newton, don’t mess with my coach, my quarterback or my kicker.
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:54 am
Baker Mayfield has been vilified by media and the brainwashed fan base that parrots the media’s takes since he came into the NFL. All of that hatred was over the top and unjustified. Baker is a smallish, athletically limited quarterback who definitely has some skills but learned at a very young age that because he was never going to be viewed as a prototypical prospect, he was going to have to be tougher, louder and exude confidence in order to be noticed and to ultimately get a chance to play this game that he obviously loves. So it’s all just a front developed from a very young age but it worked. Underneath that facade is a genuine person that has a heart of gold and loves people. That’s why he’s so beloved by his teammates. That loud and brash shell does rub some people the wrong way. Those are people that don’t know him so haven’t had a chance to know the real person and thereby judge him only superficially. He’s an overachiever and I’m sure that even though he’s confident in his abilities, he knows he’s not in the same class as Allen and Jackson and Burrow etc. He’s been able to change the perception of a lot of people in the media and consequently has been able to change the negative narrative to an extent. But that old narrative still lingers for many, including the very shallow McCoy.
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:55 am
HeavyE,
You obviously don’t know football.
Baker has one of the strongest arms, if not the strongest arm in the league and he has accuracy (when healthy). That alone gives him potential for greatness. He just needs to stay healthy and make better decisions in the heat of the moment and he can lead a team to a SB. (Idk about this team with Bowles as HC, though.)
And Baker is fiery and a great leader of men, which adds to his value on the field.
So, you’re dumb.
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:57 am
I really can’t believe that I wasted time reading this article about what shady mccoy thinks! He doesn’t know anything
July 23rd, 2026 at 9:59 am
That stuff about Evans and Mayfield is pure bull. Evans had 2 of his best years ever in 2023 and 2024 with Mayfield as his QB. Evans was essentially injured for most of 2025.
Mayfield threw plenty of 1 yard TD passes to Evans to keep him happy padding his TD totals. Evans seemed to resent the emergence of Ebuka and Jalen McMillan. He viewed them both as competing for his TD’s and total catches. Evans made the right decision. Hope he has a good year. Under Kyle Shanahan he probably will.

It was a pretty funny clip, and for whatever it’s worth Mitchell won defensive player of the week after we played them and got his first All-pro nod last year. 2 years in, SB ring and an all-pro isn’t too shabby, but the whole combined 49% completions allowed on top of 29 PBUs in 32 games played is a little better than good.
McCoy said Mayfield had no right talking trash to Mitchell, considering he was targeted 9 times, allowed 2 catches for 6 yards, and had 5 PBUs against us. I’m all for these guys jawing at one another, but I get what McCoy was trying to say even though he was talking faster than his brain computes.
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:17 am
Funny how many have turned on Baker in the course of half a season; gross-fair weather fans. Integrity is not a constant these days. When the going gets tough; jump ship. Its ok; rather walk you guys off the plank then have you on the ship. Same kind of people who sent Sam Darnold packing from Minnesota to Seattle, clowns. Over-react and then egg on face. Todd Bowles calling plays on defense while being the head coach is the main issue, Bucs have been “MID” for this reason.
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:18 am
Mayfield Mahommes
10,874 Pass Yds. 11,472
87 – 33 TD / INT 73 – 35
66.5 Completion % 66.2
98.6 Passer Rating 92.4
LAST 45 starts..Hmmmmm
Yes Baker has zero SB’s over that stretch, but Todd Bowles has been the Ship Captain..so there’s that.
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:32 am
Baker is mid. Sam Darnold is mid. Trent Dilfer was mid. Brad Johnson was mid.
Mid level QBs can win Super Bowls.
If.
1. They have a solid offensive line.
2. They have a great defense.
3. They have a good running game.
4. The QB doesn’t turn the ball over.
Last year,
1. Horrible offensive line.
2. Horrible defense. Soft and zero swarming.
3. Horrible running game.
4. Our QB turned the ball over a lot.
Therefore, we sucked last year.
But can Mayfield win big games? Yes.
Can he make miracles happen? Yes.
Can he win a Super Bowl. Yes.
Team friendly. Family friendly contract.
4 years. 180 million. Fully guaranteed.
And then we have a 4 year window with Wirfs to win a Super Bowl.
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:33 am
folks like @lefty are funnier than Druski lol….🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
GO BUCS!!!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:37 am
But can Mayfield win big games? Yes
the last BIG GAME baker won was 3years ago vs Philly lol…
he tossed a 4th quarter INT vs DET the next round…Fumbled vs WASH in a BIG GAME the next year, and choked vs MIA which was a BIG GAME that couldve put us in the playoffs….
im not seeing many BIG GAME wins by Baker
GO BUCS!!!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:40 am
Some of the most bias assessments from the likes of Shady and company are laughable. And the NFL community is loaded with the likes of him.
Just like anything in life there are the elite who represent a very small percentage of most things in life. That’s why they are respected and everyone else are chatter blowing in the wind.
July 23rd, 2026 at 10:45 am
Teacherman,
Tom Brady 3 years w/ Tampa ……33INT’s
Baker Mayfield 3 year w/ Tam….. 37INT’s
You football analysts need a new song to sing. Brady benefited from solid defenses. Baker has not.
Last year there were at least 4 INT’s credited to Baker whereby the defender just pulled the ball away from a receiver who had caught the ball. Not sure why those are counted as INT’s? More likely they were fumbles by the receiver.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:05 am
If you cannot have elite…above average is good enough.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:06 am
“he has accuracy (when healthy).”
And, when is that… Every time he plays well!? So, every time he plays bad… Then, that just means he’s injured. Got-It! He is absolutely NOT a “leader of MEN,” and is FAR from ever being such. HE never ‘elevates’ ANYONE, EVER… Cause, it’s always ALL about BAKER 24/7/365. Players always catch on eventually!!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:11 am
MelvinJunior, Prove it.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:19 am
OK.
Here we go…
Baker Mayfield is just a mediocre QB. His “style” of play – although “moxy-filled” is also “injury-filled”.
When healthy BM is @ the #15th or so (give or take a spot or two either way).
When playing injured – BM is the 25-30th ranked QB.
I like BM.
However – BM will never win a SB without the support of a top 5 defense, a top 5 special team unit and a top 5 running game.
It’s our (ROH) GM’s fault he has not yet provided the environment to enable our current QB a chance to succeed.
Plenty of blame to go around folks.
Love you guys.
Go Bucs!
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:21 am
Shady, if you’re against hyping Mayfield, why are you always doing it? The hyping is both positive and negative. You and the others are always doing it because Baker has charisma. He excites and fascinates people by attacking challenging situations rather than delegating. It’s the people who are hyped and the media performers are responding to it because they need to hold their audience. Just check out this little website: if “Baker” or “Mayfield” is in the headline, which it often is, responses abound. Media folks also have the luxury of going over the top without seeming to be extremists because the volume’s so high. As for Allen and Jackson, nobody in Buffalo or Baltimore is going to get the attention he deserves.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:30 am
Ridiculous. Baker is majorly talented. Protect him, and we win by far most of our games. No QB can get by without protection. Mahomes demonstrated that last year. Baker was getting pummeled too but if the O-line stays healthy this year we will win a lot of football games. Baker will prove me correct.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:33 am
“Above average” in the NFL means he’s pretty F’ing good. That’s top 15. You can win with that for damn sure. Why is shady so upset by that?
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:35 am
@ StPeteMatt
I’m going to do this again for you buddy.
NFL Trivia:
– How many NFL QBs under 6’2″ have won a SB the past 42 seasons?
Let me know…
OK.
I will give you the answer.
ANSWER: 2
BM is NOT the ONE.
Unless our GM can provide the necessary infrastructure…
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:36 am
Take a shot every time somebody mentions QB play, and the defense is brought about in the comments lol
Not the OL, not the RB, not the WRs, nor the QBs capabilities and how they differ from player to player in terms of comparison. Nope, it’s the defense jfc some of you make it obvious, you’re bigger fans of branded teams and/or players than you are the actual game of football.
Clear as the day is 24hrs long.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:39 am
Seriously, what did Shady McCoy ever do to earn any national attention? The same exact mumbo jumbo he dribbles about Baker is in fact accurate if anyone were to discuss McCoy’s career. He got a Super Bowl ring for free with the Bucs. He sucked. His claim to fame was dropping a can of corn TD pass from Brady against San Diego in Tampa.
Baker is what people say he is around here. He is both the good and the bad. Maybe McCoy caught Baker urinating on his eggs or something.
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:40 am
@ warrin
The Bucs averaged 22.4 pts per contest last season.
Do you really believe that is appropriate?
July 23rd, 2026 at 11:51 am
“Shady”McCoy is just that – shady. Always had a big mouth. Along with OBJ he got in a dustup with Baker and OBJ’s dad. So, he decided to hate on Baker forever.
Notice that he has never been a coach – and noone has ever asked him to. Talking like a thug most likely did not help his case.
One big problem for us is that he hung around with Mike Evans in the off-season. So he had a chance to poison Mike.
I truly believe this had a big part in Mike deciding to leave.
No matter what, hate is NEVER a virtue. When people get angry and start hating, It’s time to tune out.

I responded to another article that was meant this one.
Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen have MVP trophies. That’s a fact. They also have exactly zero Super Bowl appearances combined. Hate on Baker all day long. At the end of the day as a Buc fan I will support who ever is our quarterback
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:02 pm
I don’t think Baker is a guy that would have no shot without an all-time defense like Dilfer, but he’s not necessarily the guy to carry a team either. The problem isn’t his ability, it’s the consistency.
Is Baker a good enough qb to carry a team for four wins sometime throughout the season? Yep, I believe out of 17 games saying he is THE reason they won 4 of them isn’t a stretch at all.
Can he do it four games in a row in the postseason? That’s the question. If he ever can, there’s no reason to think the Bucs couldn’t get a third SB.
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:02 pm
“The Bucs averaged 22.4 pts per contest last season.
Do you really believe that is appropriate?”
Appropriate as in what? Good enough to win?
We won 3 of the 8 games we scored <23 points, so no.
Appropriate in terms of our ability to generate points on offense?
No, not when you look at the points generated and realize that per game average includes defensive scores. So the 380 we scored as team where that 22.4ppg comes from is really 21.6 ppg off the 368 points generated on offense. McLaughlin himself scored 96 points of those points off non-XP kicks, so again no.
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:04 pm
I’ve not heard many put Baker in the category or the big 5,, they are the big 5 for a reason (although only 2 of the big 5 have won a SuperBowl),, I think the next 10QBs after you can rank them however you want and I won’t have a big problem with it ,, Dak gets rated high with some , everyone loves Herbert , big -strong- looks the part,, I believe what Marine says BM needs to be successful is what pretty much all the next 10 need. So I’ll take above average for the next 4 years and hope the Bucs organization can put together a team that Marine has described
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:04 pm
I wonder why he mentioned Lamar so much?
🤔
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:11 pm

Somebody has Mayfield syndrome
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:21 pm
It’s interesting that Shady & Mike got so close and how Shady knew of Mike’s decision before us all
The Shady angle to Mike leaving and now rippin’ on Baker is purdy interesting
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:29 pm
Boy y’all are some Bake Haters. Man y’all keep this same energy while we kickin butt this Year with Bake at QB. I bet half of y’all complaining don’t even go to any games. Thats why the opps take over the stadium down there. I come from Alabama twice a year to go to games and every time its more opps in the stadium than bucs fans. SMDH
July 23rd, 2026 at 12:34 pm
And a large portion of Bucs fans are So TIRED of IBS as a ‘guru’ nonsence!!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 1:26 pm
Super Bowles Won-
Lamar Jackson the Magical Clown Zero (0) talk about over hyped
Josh Allen Zero (0)
Baker Mayfield (0)
Last 3 years of stats Mayfield greater than both and that is after the Bucs Suck last season.
July 23rd, 2026 at 1:33 pm
Oscar, could not have said it better on Baker. 100% correct!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 1:36 pm
Marine Bucs, you never make much sense. Mahomes is 6′ 2″ and won a couple. Baker is 6′ 1″. I’m sure that 1″ is the whole reason Baker hasn’t won a couple himself.
July 23rd, 2026 at 1:43 pm
Lefty, that is some interesting stats. Basically, BM6 has played better than Mahomes. That is just hilarious. At the same time you have idiots on this site saying Baker is mid level but would never say Mahomes is mid level even though Baker has out played him. You can’t make this stuff up. And yes we have Todd and Mahomes has the offensive genious-theres that little detail.
July 23rd, 2026 at 1:46 pm
3.28 I’m blown away by your comment and I agree with 100 percent. I will say shady in his prime had some crazy moves
July 23rd, 2026 at 1:51 pm
Why does anyone listen to Shady has been McCoy who didn’t do much when he was on the Bucs. He was a sham we all thought he’d make an impact but he thinks he does thru his big mouth.
July 23rd, 2026 at 2:55 pm
Gipper:
Three years of Brady and Baker with Tampa:
Total Rushing and Passing TDs — Brady 114 —- Baker — 100
Total Turnovers (Ints and Fumbles Lost) —- Brady 39 — Baker 54
I personally do not see that as even.
July 23rd, 2026 at 3:00 pm
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mahomes, Jackson & Allen all have MVPs but yet Baker has outplayed them in the minds of some lol….
you cant make this BS up lol…
no one who knows football would take baker over mahomes, jackson or allen lol…STOP IT!!!
GO BUCS!!!!
July 23rd, 2026 at 3:08 pm
Hilarious … did 3.28 just start watching football in the last 6 years
His knowledge about McCoy’s overall career is about as accurate as
…. Well, all of his insights…
Meaning for context McCoy was considered a top 5 RB for about 7-8 years of his career.
Interesting tidbit on McCoy. His 15,000 yards from scrimmage in his career is more than any current active player.
More than Mike Evans, more than Travis Kelce, more than Derrick Henry.
In his 12-year career in the NFL, he AVERAGED 1250 yards per scrimmage per season.
July 23rd, 2026 at 3:10 pm
The top rushers for the Buc’s 2020 regular season were:
Ronald Jones: 978 yards
Leonard Fournette: 367 yards
Ke’Shawn Vaughn: 109 yards
LeSean McCoy: 31 yards
Blaine Gabbert: 16 yards
FACTS
July 23rd, 2026 at 4:55 pm
Certainly accurate, not probably. If both have poor playoff records then the two mvps should make that clear.
I would suggest that mayfield has had many above average years, a two good years and a very good year in ‘24. Never an elite year.
July 23rd, 2026 at 5:38 pm
Does the name McCoy mean former player who can’t STFU?
I can think of at least two…..,
July 23rd, 2026 at 6:13 pm
Baker cool but shady is right
He ain’t nobody fr
Hasn’t proven anything in the playoffs but turnovers
I don’t understand why this franchise wants to pay Baker
HE HASNT WON IN THE PLAYOFFS
