A’Shawn Robinson: No Such Thing As A Trivial Practice

May 27th, 2026

Veteran defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

Joe understands a lot of folks, when you mention underwear football to them, roll their eyes and sarcastically speak of the excellent plays a defender made on a tackling dummy.

Joe gets the cynicism. But don’t suggest to new Bucs defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson that underwear football is pointless. Robinson is a man who knows what it takes to build a Super Bowl-winning team, having played on the 2021 Rams squad that won it all.

Yesterday, Robinson said OTAs (spring practices) are an opportunity to “work on our craft to harness consistency day in and day out.”

“Being persistent in things we do, the way we work, the way we talk to each other. Knowing that we’re working for the goal to be the best,” he continued.

“So, there’s no days off, there’s no lack [of purpose], there’s no nothing. We make sure we push each other day in and day out, no matter what it is, meeting rooms or whatever it is.”

Robinson said just being around teammates, players can learn something new to better themselves.

“We can learn from one another, because there’s always something you can learn from younger guys and older guys who teach younger guys. So there’s never nothing that we can’t teach each other.”

Pretty cool attitude if you ask Joe. And maybe that’s why Danny Smith, the new Bucs special teams coach, said he could feel the culture in One Buc Palace.

Look at yesterday, for example, the only people missing were either Vita Vea (who was working out with Ndamukong Suh) and a few defenders who missed yesterday’s OTA for what Joe had heard were religious commitments.

Joe’s glad the Bucs found a guy like Robinson, who not just is a glass eater on the field but is also committed to his craft and to helping teammates grow.

Some, not all. A lot of us realize this is the open-air classroom portion of the offseason and it’s just as important for these guys repping their assignments to learn their jobs. Boring, if all you care for is contact, but this is where these guys learn to get in where they fit in.

I for one love all things football (Bucs specifically) related, including the very meaningful preseason games. If i wasn’t reading about OTA’s this morning over a cup of coffee what would I be reading..? Last weeks golf standings?

  3. Defense Rules Says:

The more I read about Robinson, the more convinced I becoime that he may well be our most important addition this off-season. Bucs desperately need better FIELD LEADERSHIP, and I have a feeling that A’Shawn is gonna give us that.

  4. BuccaDAWG Says:

No doubt about it A Shawn Robinson has a better attitude among with more talent.

  5. Bojim Says:

Cant expect them to jump right in to pads right away. People will get hurt.

  6. WestPhillyBucsFan Says:

A’Shawn Robinson AKA our New Era JPP! Bringing a blend of Nastiness, Aggression and Championship experience. It will be great for our DLine, defense as a whole and team as a whole.

    Refreshing perspective.

    Robinson>Hall
    Bain>Reddick
    Muhammad>Braswell
    Kancey >Gaines
    Roberts > rookie Roberts
    Nacho> last years depth

No more excuses for this defense not being good enough.

Big year for Bowles to prove he can put it all together and give this offense a chance to win games.

  8. LynchMob50 Says:

How’s Braswell doing? Has he shocked anyone yet?

Has Larry Walker had a practice yet? Did he get that SB ring Foote yelled about?

What about Hurst? Has he broken every WR record in the NFL yet?

    Asking for a friend.

  9. WestPhillyBucsFan Says:

LynchMob, Ima pray for you brother. I can’t imagine waking up so negative. I know it’s deeper rooted than football. I pray you find some peace within.

  10. LynchMob50 Says:

    @westPhillyBucsFan

While I appreciate the prayers for peace, and I’ll take them, you don’t need to worry about me. I’m doing quite well actually.

My issue is with the constant propaganda and acceptance of mediocrity.

I just want to get back to the winning ways. That can’t happen until Bowles is gone.

Until then we are wasting our time and I will speak my mind while waiting for the inevitable.

42 points off 21 defensive takeaways last season, by the way.

    Good one! 🙂

Joe doesn’t know if this was planned or just a simple slip up. Either way, this is hilarious! 🙂

Lynchmob50 have you pulled your head out between Todd Bowles ass cheeks yet? The obsession you have with him is very unhealthy. You are a very miserable man.

Larry Walker is one of the greatest Canadian athletes ever. Up there with Donovan Bailey & Bret LeMarcus Hart lol

I understand people are frustrated. Let’s all please admit it the defense until proven otherwise is pitiful, just the facts. Yes , their have been positive changes, but fixing this defense is going to take a couple of years. Judging by their actions the Bucs seem to want to rebuld, not reload this defense for the longer term. I am looking at what they are doing , not what they are saying.
The D line might be better now. However, their are serious issues unresolved in the secondary. Their are certainly big question marks in the starting personnel and yet another as far as depth. The LB postions are also questionable, where we now have a 31 year old and a rookie that will be starting. Then depth behind them is another question mark. Make no mistake the offense will need to carry this team, and hope the defense is at least average. Bowles had little talent last year, that has improved, but don’t expect him to be able to create a top defense with the personnel he now has. Average this year would be a respectable improvement.
I see this team starting slowly, losing more in the beginning and improving as the rookies begin to aquaint themselves to NFL caliber play. I think the hope is they end the season strong as the defense starts to come together if they have the right personnel. 9-8 is probly a good record for this team realistically. I don’t see 10 wins and above with this defense unless the offense has few injuries and averges 30 plus points a game.

  18. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

I say with confidence that the D Line has been significantly improved along with the LB group (which is thin in depth). The D Backfield will have to show me they equal or better than last year with Dean. Still think they sign a vet DB and LB after cuts happen.

  19. Badbucs Says:

Give A’Shawn the pen for the accountability board. No more half-baked walk through practices. No more starting games mid-way through the 2nd quarter. Bowles won’t do it so the players have to. Finally a leader.

  20. JimBobBuc Says:

The whole team and especially the defense needs communication and accountability. It starts at the top but goes deeper. During games, I never see Bowles talking to anyone – players or coaches. In the huddle, I see the play call but nothing else. Right now, the players need to be talking through reps and holding each other accountable – it needs to start now like A’Shawn is saying.

  21. Mort Says:

The reason Diaby, Braswell and AQM missed practice is because of the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha.

I have a healthy obsession with winning and\or building towards a winner.

With Todd Bowles it’s just a stuck in the mud going nowhere existence.

And I called it the second they were forced to hire him, thanks to BA.

Bringing him back after 2024 and 2025 was just beyond stupid.

For the record, I’m quite happy with my life. I just enjoy the back and forth with the Pom Pom squad.
