Jason Licht Got A Little Too Excited Watching Rueben Bain On Draft Night

May 7th, 2026

Calm down!

Too much information!

Joe knows Bucs fans have been riding a wave of euphoria since the Bucs lucked into the Miami Mauler, Rueben Bain, in the first round of the draft.

Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht has stated in several interviews and media appearances how he never gave much thought to Bain being on the board at No. 15 because he thought the idea was so far-fetched.

And guess what happened? It seems Licht may have gotten a little too excited. And Licht was a tad descriptive about this when he appeared on Pat McAfee’s show this week, seen on YouTube and BSPN.

“When he walked out there and snatched that hat, I got to tell you that was a six-to-midnight moment,” Licht said.

OH! Take it easy, Jason. Calm down. Have a beer.

Joe is a big believer one cannot have enough information, but even that philosophy can go a bit overboard. Get a hold of yourself, man!

(For those who are unaware of the slang “six-to-midnight,” all Joe can type is, Google is your friend. Joe runs a family-friendly site here.)

Licht also raved about Miami coach Mario Cristobal, who played for The U in their glory days and Licht said Cristobal has brought The U back. Back when Licht played for Nebraska, only three teams ever stood in the Cornhuskers’ way of a national title: Oklahoma, Florida State and Miami.

Nebraska and Miami had some legendary games.

Licht remembered The U and how now once again it is full of dawgs. And that’s the type of players he sought this offseason. Licht added Cristobal now has Miami with the same type of players that put The U on the college football map years ago.

Licht noted Keionte Scott, the Bucs’ fourth-round pick, and Bain are the types of players he covets: physical and tough who leave it all on the field and never settle for less than success.

So why not draft those type of guys before?
    JST?

  2. Lou. Says:

    Great, great question Ha-Ha.

  3. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

Licht fell for the old axiom that speed always kills. He finally realize that speed combined with power kills. JST had zero power to go along with his speed.

  4. Stpetematt Says:

You have to get lucky and have a high enough draft pick. Bain could have gone top 3 or 4 so that effectively turned our first round pick to a number 4 (or even better!) overall talent-wise.

  5. Fanofdabucs Says:

Luck has nothing to do getting high picks..having seasons with double digit losses does. Which, thankfully of GM doesn’t have very often.

All these kids/clowns on here, mostly trolls full of Buc envy (also mostly the same person with no life)..they weren’t Buc fans who grew up watching this team is the 80s and 90s when double digit losses were common place.

There’s this fantasy world they live in where every draft pick is a pro bowler at minimum and HOFer ceilings. A world were GMs never miss on picks or FA signings.

Let them have their fantasy, because clearly their reality is a sad place.

  6. Kenton Smith Says:

Enjoy those 6 to midnight moments, Jason. All too soon they will be 6 to 11 moments. And 6 to 10 moments. And… oh, just forget about it.

  7. 813bucboi Says:

LOL…JL strikes me as a Rhino man lol

    GO BUCS!!!!

  8. 3.28.Evans Says:

Watch what Bowles does to your dawgs Jason. Good night nurse.

  9. D-Rok Says:

    Joe,

“six to midnight” is also a metaphorical reference to the “Doomsday Clock,” indicating extreme danger or proximity to a global catastrophe.

There are 2 meanings for that phrase, and I’m pretty sure you meant the other reason of being super excited. LOL.

  10. BuccaDawg Says:

Wow maybe our Genius HC & Rock Star GM will start to draft a few not just SEC talent but players from the correct SEC teams. Kirby gets players drafted & they produce when they get there.

  11. BucsfaninOregon Says:

This is an interested thread. Good one, Joe.

  12. Bucman Says:

The Bucs still have a lousy D/C

  13. Todd Says:

Sorry Joe, but leaving Steve Spurriers’ Gators out of your mention of other top college football programs during the 90s was a glaring mistake. Oklahoma was 54-46 during the 90s and it was often called”The Lost Decade” by the Oklahoma faithful.
The Gators almost won as many games as Nebraska only 6 shy for the decade and of course won the Heisman in back to back years, dominated the SEC, and won the 1996 National Title.

  14. Orlando Kevin Says:

Odd way to express excitement about drafting a guy. I get being excited but not that kind of excited. lol

  15. Orlando Kevin Says:

To those that question Bowles defensive coaching, last time he had a complete solid unit, they destroyed Mahommes in the SB causing the Chiefs to step back the next year to fix their o line.

Let’s see what he does by the end of this year with some new talent.

  16. LynchMob50 Says:

Once Bowles gets his hooks into these players, Bud Licht will go from midnight to six.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

    5-12.

  18. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

Every article – same result: “Bowles sucks and Jason sucks and all draft picks suck and Bowles will ruin them all and cry cry cry”.

Guys – we were all disappointed in the way last year ended. It’s like getting broken up with and continuing to complain to your friends for months. Get over it and move on.

You all must love to complain and make yourselves feel better doing so. Have some constructive criticism at least.

If you have nothing constructive to add, then please just close the holes.

  19. LynchMob50 Says:

    @‘74 Bucs Fan

Bowles is a defensive Guru that no NFL team can defeat.

Baker is the best QB in NFL history, even better than Brady or Mahomes.

Licht is the smartest GM in football and constructs a SB level roster every season.

Is that better for you princess???

  20. Bucmike17 Says:

LynchMob50 You are clearly a very dense individual lol

  22. MadMax Says:

Eh, im going 6 to 7 and 12….but i feel you 87, because unless the stubborn one changes (and he wont) players will again be misused and management will again be misused….All good, probably his last year.

  23. unbelievable Says:

    LMAO!

    I mean…………. Is he wrong?

  25. #99 the Big Fella Says:

While I admit joebucsfan is my favorite sports website ,the trolls have taken over
Joes competitor definitely allows someone to disagree they do not put up with the lynchmobs , the 3.28.Evans or the Grover’s. They definitely put a stop to it.

  26. Joe Says:

Sorry Joe, but leaving Steve Spurriers’ Gators out of your mention of other top college football programs during the 90s was a glaring mistake.

No mistake at all. Nebraska took Florida to the woodshed in the national title game. At least Florida State and Miami beat the Cornhuskers for titles.

  27. Brian in FL Says:

    Amazing quote. Hahahaha

  28. Scott Murph Says:

Licht started to redeem himself in draft building a better defense until supposedly he’s now talking bout given Baker Mayfield another extension lol come on Man the guy will not lead the team to a Super Bowl. He did the same stuff in Cleveland win several In a row and then fall on his face. Mike Evans saw it that’s why he left to go to a team that can make it to Super Bowl. At best Baker will make first round of playoffs then bust with picks — balls knocked down at the line etcc — you’ve paid him enough —-time for QB change —- Don’t do extension save the money for better QB

Its dubbed a sports boner in my house

Sorry Joe , but at the very least you could have admitted your faux pas that including Oklahoma clearly was. It is OK Joe there are others that think they are always right by self proclamation , but facts matter as they always will.

Dude, re-read the post. The only three teams that stood in the way of Nebraska winning a title back in the day was Oklahoma (Nebraska’s bitter conference rival when the Big Eight was the Big Two (Oklahoma and Nebraska); fact, Florida State (who beat Nebraska for a national title); fact and Miami (who also beat Nebraska for a title); fact.

Here’s another fact for you: Florida did not stand in Nebraska’s way. Florida had their asses stomped out by Nebraska (62-24) in the national title game.

Don’t get mad at Joe, get mad at Steve Spurrier who showed up with zero defense that night.

Joe’s statement that Oklahoma, Florida State and Miami were Nebraska’s only speed bumps is absolutely accurate.
