Status Quo Is Just Fine For Bucs Offense

April 23rd, 2026

History and good sense won out.

The Kenyon Sadiq fantasy ended abruptly for some Bucs fans.

Tampa Bay drafted mauling University of Miami edge rusher at No. 15 overall tonight, and the beastly Oregon tight end, Sadiq, went at No. 16 to the Jets.

Cade Otton will be your No. 1 Bucs tight end this season. Again. Hopefully, new Bucs offensive coordinator Zac Robinson will use Otton more like he was in 2024 while the Bucs were without Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. That’s when Otton showed he could play more like a receiver and make tough catches down the field.

Otton even flashed that last season a couple of times, but that aspect of his game largely was ignored by 2025 Bucs playcaller Josh Grizzard. Otton ran shorter routes and had very average production as a receiver, despite catching 59 balls.

The Sadiq fantasy was just that, a fantasy. Was Buccaneers Ring of Honor general manager Jason Licht really going to draft an offensive player with three consecutive first round picks? Rarely will good teams do that unless it’s a unique situation. In fact, it had only happened once in Bucs history — receiver Michael Clayton in 2004, running back Cadillac Williams in 2005, and guard Davin Joseph in 2006.

Robinson has enough weapons to deliver a strong offense. And he has the best quarterback in the division. Get it done, Zac.

Yes, Joe would embrace the Bucs drafting a tight end in Rounds 3 or 4, or adding a receiver or interior offensive lineman there. But this draft needed to be about defense, and so far it has been.

Joe expects the next draft pick tomorrow to be Tampa Bay’s new starting inside linebacker alongside free agent Alex Anzalone.

There’s a lot of fast, receiving first, can’t block TE’s in this draft – I wouldn’t rush to get one.

Man-o-live, we do not need another OJ Howard experience, once was enough! We needed a nasty pass rusher and we got one. Bain is best as Mesidor has an injury history with his feet that is concerning.

  12. UKbuc Says:

Njoku still available who can threaten the seam with Otton in line. Would be cheap if we don’t draft a Delp etc

  13. Obvious Says:

We should be able to add depth at guard, te and wr the next two days. If that happens the offense should be well suited for the season, from a roster standpoint.

The coaching will most likely be mediocre.

  14. ‘74 Bucs Fan Says:

We got Bain – that’s all that matters tonight. Let’s get a Sapp/Brooks type draft rolling. We can get a big bodied receiver or TE later in the draft

Awesome pick to tonight Jason! Way to not overthink it. I was about to be pissed if we passed on Bain.

Jason and the owners need to step in and insist on defensive coaching changes. It appears luck is on the Bucs side and the draft may fall to them in a very good way. Foote needs to go and Jason Taylor needs to be hired. So does George Edwards. This is a pivotal time for the Bucs and Bowles can’t be left to mess it up. Baker needs to feel confident in the defense and Bowles.

Complacency with the defensive coaching staff will ruin this draft.

Otton had a bad game against the Rams. Generally, he’s solid in both the pass and run game. His receiving stats aren’t great because he doesn’t get targets until receivers get hurt. Bake will generally throw to Godwin, EE, and JMac before Otton. I’m OK with the TE’s since there are so many holes in the defense.

  18. 3.28.Evans Says:

Punter in round 2? Maybe long snapper? FG holder?

Gotta shore up those special teams since it’s all about the players and not coaching.

  19. Gipper Says:

This team needs Rodriguez in the middle of the defense. Hope he is still around in round 2.

  20. Rod Munch Says:

Otton is a pretty good starting NFL TE, that’s why he got a $10M/yr extension. He’s not a top player, but he’s in no way bad. He IS a receiving first TE, but because college TE’s have become such bad blockers, he’s moved from being a below average blocker, to being a decent blocker, just by default.

But you do need a 2nd TE, and the Bucs don’t have one. Personally, I still like Sam Roush the most since he’s the only TE in the draft that can catch AND block, but he lacks the speed of some of the other guys. But if all you want is a tall guy who is pretty fast, who can’t block, there’s a bunch who should still be around in the 3rd, even the 4th round.

  21. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“But you do need a 2nd TE, and the Bucs don’t have one.”

We have 3. One that’s just as long as Cade and also improved as a blocker from ‘24 to ‘25. One that’s fast as hell and another one who can’t stay in the sun too long but also hates sleeves and can line up in the backfield.

    Check yo shee, Rodrick

  22. MelvinJunior Says:

Unless, Baker morphs into Sam “The Man” Darnold, this offense is totally SCREWED this upcoming season.

  23. MelvinJunior Says:

IF Chris Godwin is “Chris Godwin” Again. IF the O-Line is ‘healthy’ all season. IF JMac is completely healthy for an entire season. IF Bucky is healthy physically AND mentally, and “Bucky” again. IF ee is “1st-Half” EE AGAIN, and morphs into JSN. IF we can add another couple of pieces on offense thru the draft, free-agency, or via trade. IF Baker… Again, LOTS and LOTS of Biggggg “IFs.” I’m not worried about the Defense, at ALL.

  24. Bojim Says:

Glad we passed on the TE even though he was there. Otton will be fine and please give more snaps to Culp.
