Insider Skepticism On Mike Evans Leaving Tampa
March 4th, 2026When trying to connect dots related to the Bucs, Joe always pays attention to ESPN NFL insiders Peter Schrager and Adam Schefter.
Schrager is a longtime close personal friend of Bucs assistant general manager Mike Greenberg, and Schefter and Greenberg are from the same hometown. Greenberg is likely the only director of football operations (2021) to ever be a guest on Schefter’s podcast.
Schrager and Schefter were talking yesterday.
Consider Schrager a skeptic when it comes to Mike Evans moving on when the free agency dinner bell rings on Monday at noon.
“I don’t think enough is made of the relationship he has with that [Bucs] front office as a family man and as a person,” Schrager said on ESPN TV. “That was the first pick Jason Licht ever made: Mike Evans. If he was ever going to leave Tampa, it would have to be with one of those [contenders like the Patriots or Bills].”
Schrager was responding to panelist and retired defensive back Jason McCourty talking about the Bills and Patriots needed to add one big offensive piece.
Then Schefter chimed in sarcastically and visibly scoffed at the suggestion Evans would play for the Bills. “He lives in Tampa, lives in the offseason in Houston, and now you’re going to Buffalo?” Schefter said with a mocking face.
Joe has long been on record confident that Evans will play for the Bucs in 2026.
Houston remains a wild card for Joe, however. Bucs fans may not want to hear it but, as Schefter said, Evans grew up in Galveston and lives in the Houston area when football season is over. A crazy fat offer from the Texans could be too attractive from him to pass up.

If I had a ring and a HOF resume and lived in Tampa I wouldn’t want to leave here. It’s great. I doubt his wife wants to go up north either.
But, if he’s dead set on another ring I will not be shocked to visit this website and read about him signing elsewhere.

the numbers have to be fair….so many holes, especially on D…and availability. Its up to him.
But seriously cant blame him if he does leave because of todd. I’ll still root for him if he does except when he plays us.

Everyone acting like this is 2022 Mike Evans, his market is 2026 Evans coming off yet another shortened season, and those SB contenders everyone talks about, those teams aren’t flushed with spending money and usually have enough to get by without Evans so he’d have to get on a team friendly contract, Houston has Nico n the 2 really good rookies from last year and Stroud still looks horrible, doubt he leaves

Texans are in worse cap shape than we are, so there’s that

Based on the name I post with I think it’s easy to see who my favorite Bucs player ever is. With that said, as much as I’d love to see him finish his career in a Bucs uniform price has to be right. I think they need to add too many players on the defensive front to be able to afford him in my opinion. I hope I’m wrong and Mike stays in Tampa but if things don’t line up and he moves on I will still proudly rock my Evans jersey on game days as a shoutout to the greatest Bucs offensive player ever

The home connection for Houston is about the only thing going for it.
There is next to 0 chance the Texans are the team that signs him, not sure why Joe and BucBoi831 keep bringing it up.
Texans are not a team that has been linked through media, they have a worse cap situation than the Bucs, if there is any truth to Mike wanting targets and yards he wouldn’t even be the #1 there with Nico Collins, Stroud is worse than Baker, they currently can’t field a starting caliber OL after the 2 trades they just made, they just spent a couple day 2 picks on WRs and presumably Tank Dell will be back… how many more reasons do we need for the Texans to not make sense?

Can we bet on this anywhere cause my money is that he stays in Tampa until he retires. No way he leaves because it means something to these guys to stay with one team especially when you are this deep into your career with a HOF resume.

Hey Joe one problem with Houston, a small one, no qb. If ME was a defensive player that would be different. My concerns are. San Fran and the Patriots. I see both of them making offers and have a lot to offer. They check all the boxes. I agree I don’t see Buffalo

The cope is suffocating around here.

ME13’s only demand from the Bucs FO and Owners is to bring in the talent needed to win games, so he has one more chance at a SB ring. He doesn’t need the money and he doesn’t demand more touches. ME13 just wants to win and relive the joy and excitement of the Brady years, that’s all he wants. What JL can or cannot do in FA will determine a lot, because the HC and staff is set and Bowles cannot win without talent. Nice guy that the players love, but he is a .500 coach that only does better when the roster is loaded.
