Yes, Running Back Is A Need

February 17th, 2026

Looking for a better 2026.

Entering the 2025 season, Joe was really stoked thinking the Bucs would have a strong, dangerous run game.

It turned out to be one of the worst elements of the team.

Joe isn’t sure why that was. Even when Bucky Irving was healthy, he ran for two yards less per carry than in his explosive rookie season. Not good.

The epidemic of injuries on the offensive line didn’t help. And, perhaps one-and-done Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard wasn’t sharp at crafting a run game.

Maybe it was a combination of all of the above?

But with Bucky hoping to bounce back from shoulder surgery, Rachaad White having p!ssed all over the floor near the exit to One Buc Palace, and Sean Tucker being a restricted free agent, don’t tell Joe the Bucs don’t need a running back.

In fact, Ryan McCrystal of Sharp Football Analysis noted the Bucs’ run game was woeful.

[Bucs] Running backs gained 10 or more yards on 7.8% of carries, ranked 29th.

That’s not explosive. And it is hard to score points in the NFL without explosive plays.

Joe would love for the Bucs to sign free agent back Tyler Allgeier. But if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht can’t resist the temptation to draft Jeremiyah Love if the Notre Dame back somehow found himself on the board when the Bucs pick at No. 15, Joe would smile going to bed that night.

  1. ocala Says:

Bucs could have the #1 offense in the NFL in 2026, but does any logical person really believe it will be enough to overcome the bad defensive coaching on this team?

  2. StormyInFl Says:

Depends on who he passed on to draft Love. If one of the premium pass rushers or linebackers (Styles) is sitting there, they have to take him. And if Love is that good, I’m betting that Licht could get a decent haul to trade down.

This team is built to be a throw first team, regardless of what Bowles thinks or says.

  3. JackBall Says:

The Bucs need to start addressing the defense, because it sucks!

  4. StormyInFl Says:

I do want to clarify – if all of the defensive players available when the Bucs pick are reaches, and the trade down offers suck, take Love.

    Never, ever reach for need.

  5. Upstate NY BUC Says:

3 and 28!!!-Allegiar-FA- draft rest defense please!!!!

  6. jimmy Says:

lol so many needs on an alleged super bowl contender.

what is needed is a dose of reality, the bucs are probably entering lost decade II

  7. Cory Collier Says:

It’s amazing how great a running game can be when the OC knows how to call plays that keep the defense off balance the whole game.

A great defensive line seems to matter more when it comes to winning Super Bowls however. Keep Tucker, go after a REAL edge rusher.

  8. Stpetematt Says:

We never had a good run game until we got a really good, healthy offensive line. As soon as they got injured and several knocked out of games, we lost our run game and pass protection. That’s exactly what you would expect.

  9. Pewter Power Says:

We hire a lame OC, Bucky gets hurt and suddenly he gets sh!t on. He was a number one before he got hurt now someone in Tampa bay media fantasizing about draft running back with the 15th pick. Probably the same one making the ridiculous joke about Bowles being better than Tomlin

  10. Pelsbuc61 Says:

Bucky needs to get his head right as BA would say.

  11. Demete Says:

Joe, this just in. he WASN’T healthy when he came back. If he was, why did he have shoulder surgery? Did everyone forget the season he was having before he got hurt? Give the kid a break.

  12. HC Grover Says:

You all do not understand. The defense and HC?DC are beyond helping. We must draft all offense and get all offense FA’s….we must SCORE 40 plus a game.

  13. Dom Says:

I blame the O-Line being a mess for the disappointing rushing attack. I also blame the OC for smashing the Bucky Irving button. He was getting way too many touches and he doesn’t have the body to handle a workhorse workload. The OC failed to integrate Irving, White, and Tucker with an effective split. I don’t see how it could be thst hard to tally the touches during the game and try to keep a split of 12-15 touches for Bucky, 8-12 touches for White, and 5-8 touches for Tucker

  14. Co-Z Coolman Says:

SEAN TUCKER IS A STARTING RB IN THIS LEAGUE. please resign him

  15. bucnjim Says:

First off, no way they are drafting Love! Second I agree with Pewter Power. If anyone remembers, Bucky went off on the Offensive line because he was getting hit in the backfield. The center of the line was getting blown up most plays. RB’s don’t go from hero to zero without a reason. Throw in a capable Sean Tucker and there is little reason to draft a RB in the first round. Unless of course you completely give up on the D and dedicate to outscoring your opponent.

  16. Mike C Says:

So Draft the RB at 15 and get some defensive free agents, if the RB is that special…. we did just see one get MVP in the SB.

  17. Beeej Says:

Bucky had shoulder surgery last week, does anyone have the details?

  18. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Joebucsfan team thinks Irving coming back from shoulder surgery is a concern and Bucs need to add RB as a priority
But 2 Guards with knee injuries is no issue and Bucs’ Oline will be good to go…
    SMH

  19. JimBobBuc Says:

Don’t draft a back until rd4 or later, and bring in some UDFA backs.

Free agency happens before the draft. Biggest priority will be ILB and/or Edge. Also a backup guard.

In the draft go with best defensive player available in rds 1-3 and not stretch for positions of need (Licht tends to stretch in rds 1-3. Obviously, Edge and ILB are a focus, but a beastly DL who can rush the passer would be great too.

  20. DS Says:

That’s what I’m saying load up on defensive free agents in the draft reason being is you draft defense for a win now team you are getting them ready for the next coaching regime

  21. Marine Buc Says:

Sean Tucker is one of the worst pass blocking RBs in the entire NFL.

    That is a major problem.

When ST is on the field the defense knows what the play is…

I am not a big fan of R. White but at least he is a decent pass blocker/catcher.

You just can’t be a one dimensional RB in the NFL – it’s not 1984 anymore folks.

    Get real.

  22. Gipper Says:

Jeremiyah Love best player in this draft. Can’t see how it would be possible for him to be around at 15. Crazy things happen. We will see.

  23. MadMax Says:

Sign one in fa….maybe a 6th on a flyer, but def not a 1 thru 4 draft pick. Fix that o line with Ioane if styles is gone…..if both are gone trade down a bit and get DT McDonald.

  24. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

There are rounds outside of the first and RBs outside of Love that would serve a purpose with us without compromising any other draft picks.

    -Emmet Johnson
    -Nick Singleton
    -Mike Washington jr**
    -Jayden Ott
    -Le’Veon Moss
    -Roman Hemby

To name just a few alternatives

  25. Peetee Weetee Says:

Hey, people. A terrific running back just won MVP in the Super Bowl. Kenneth Walker III is as good a back as they come.

  26. Obvious Says:

Don’t need to worry about love unless there’s something that comes out during the draft process.

I like the idea of getting a downhill runner like TA or Robinson.

  27. Badbucs Says:

Are our coaches so lame they can’t teach Tucker to block in 3 years? I guess walk through coaching just doesn’t cut it. Pay White or pick up TA. Draft some beastly DTs and move Kancey outside. He’s not Aaron Donald.

  28. Alstott40 Says:

2024 season- Great offense, terrible defense…
JoesBucsFan- We need to draft offense!
After 2025- Decent offense, terrible defense…

SEAN TUCKER IS A STARTING RB IN THIS LEAGUE. please resign him

    BINGO!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  30. David Says:

Holy crap. The Joe’s will not stop talking about a running back. Bucky and Tucker are fantastic duo. Yes, they need another back in the mix with White gone, but it is definitely day two or three in the draft or fridge and pick up. Nothing more.
Line depth, ILB, and edge are definitely the priorities.

  31. Bas Jan Ader Says:

I’m sick and tired of Joe slandering Bucky for those out of context literally 4 games. Our O-Line was awful, our run game coordination was worse, and Bucky was still a weapon in the pass game. It was a horrible, horrible situation that hurt Bucky the most because Bucky needs that good blocking for his jump-cut style of play. Using blanket stats like these just show you don’t know ball. Yes, Rachaad was better at leaning forward and getting 4 yards per pop with no excitement. So? We know Bucky is a top 10 RB when we actually provide him space.

  32. 813bucboi Says:

    YES!!!…OG IS A NEED!!!!

1ST ROUND OG would fix a lot of issues with baker and the run game!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!

  33. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Holy crap. The Joe’s will not stop talking about a running back. Bucky and Tucker are fantastic duo.”

Easy to get tunnel vision this time of year, that said draft Jack Strand lol

  34. OLDSCHOOL1976 Says:

Sign Algier and don’t draft any RBs. Plenty of FAs and undrafted RBs will be available to fill 4th string positions. None of matters if Todd doesn’t get a top notch edge player and an ego check to simplify his scheme. Players we draft for defense won’t have his system understood for years if ever.

  35. Aqualung Says:

Both. Algier and Love. Do it.

Offense wins championships. When the Bucs score less than an average of 30 ppg, they suck.

  36. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“I’m sick and tired of Joe slandering Bucky for those out of context literally 4 games. Our O-Line was awful, our run game coordination was worse, and Bucky was still a weapon in the pass game”

Didn’t hold Rachaad White back, he finished with 4.3 yards a carry in ’25 same as he did in ’24 with a fully healthy OL.

Bucky on the other hand, finished averaging 3.4 yards a touch in ’25 compared to finishing 5.4 yards a touch.

I’d attribute health and the OL, contributing to the fall in explosive runs, but I think we forget, even as Bucky emerged last season. Coen started White in 15 games compared to Buckys’ 3 starts in ‘2025.

I always figured, you start with the better pass protector in the event you want to lead with the pass. Grizz wanted to that, but did it with Bucky as his starter.

There were signs, small and not so small.

  37. JA Says:

Heck with the talent level. I agree with Licht.
What this team needs is more nice, lovable guys … like their head coach!

  38. Bucsfanman Says:

Health is always a concern and we were not healthy on offense, to say the least. I think you have to treat RB as a “need” position even with a healthy Bucky. Obviously not an overwhelming need, but a need none the less.
Regardless, if they don’t address this defense, it won’t matter if we had the “All madden” team on offense!

  39. JA Says:

And we don’t need running backs. We need guys who make holes for running backs!
I’ve always found it humorous how the RB is blamed for a poor performance when he is immediately hit by three guys when given the ball.
Yeah, that’s his fault. Cut the loser who can’t carry 900 pounds of defensive linemen on his back while taking it to the house.

  40. gofortheface30 Says:

Respected analysts such as Todd McShay and Louis Riddick and plenty of others have Love as a top 5 overall player in the draft, which is extraordinarily rare for a running back. As an aside, I seem to recall couch surfer draft experts being butt hurt over Jahmyr Gibbs being taken incredibly high, same as Bijan. To quote AOC at the german summit a few days ago: “UH DERRRRR URMMMM UMMMM WEELLLL YOU KNOW, UHH URRR DERRRR” (Thanks AOC). Totally cool though, listen you guys – we got Sean Tucker, and you can draft a guy every bit as talented as love in the 6th round. If Bain and Sonny styles are already picked – say no to the best player available that would make this offense INFINITELY more exciting and dangerous

  41. HC Grover Says:

HC and DC are also needs. Along with GM, Owner. all defense positions and O and D coachin staff….Help Wanted…apply 1 Buc Place, Tampa FL.

  42. HC Grover Says:

After 5 games FANS will be a need.

  43. HC Grover Says:

TE’s a la Gronk make holes for RB’s…..

  44. Bradinator Says:

Here’s “The Problem”. If whatever RB we draft, no matter how high, if he can’t pass block he won’t see the field. For reference see: Sean Tucker. The man had a game where he personally accounted for over 200 yards and we didn’t se him for the rest of the season. TE you say? See Devin Culp, apparently he can’t run block, but on 3 and 8 he’s on the bench watching Otton run 7 yard routes. See also OLBs who CAN rush the passer, but if they can’t cover a WR (let’s be honest here, NO OLB can cover anything at all) they won’t see the field. Our staff cannot work “outside the box”. Seriously, it’s like saying “That Stevie Wonder is a pretty good singer, but he can’t dance. Leave him out of the show”. In round one, give me Styles, if he’s not available, the best pass rushing OLB (whether or not he can cover Bijan Robinson is irrelevant) OR a beast Guard. Period. Anything else

  45. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Respected analysts such as Todd McShay and Louis Riddick and plenty of others have Love as a top 5 overall player in the draft, which is extraordinarily rare for a running back.”

You see how hard you gotta sell the idea of drafting an RB top 10, when you’re not picking in the top-10? Even got to sell to yourself lol

Bucky has barely been a pro for 2 calendar years and has already had surgery.

Tunnel vision is cooking brains out here.

  46. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

I’m curious…at what level was the run game BEFORE all the injuries?

Also, I’m not 100% convinced Rachaad White is leaving. Licht could surprise us.

  47. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We better not draft a RB before the 5th round…

    1. Edge
    2. OG
    3. Edge
    4. ILB

Move Johnson to ILB instead of OLB.

    Boom.

  48. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Sign a RB in FA. Same with TE. Maybe a proven veteran Edge to bridge the rookies.

  49. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Also, I’m not 100% convinced Rachaad White is leaving. Licht could surprise us.”

Licht has no control over Rachaad Whites’ decision on whom he wants to work for.

No longer under contract, didn’t get extended, and has played for 4 different OCs in his time with us.

My thing is, White has never given off being a selfish guy, but I could see him bailing after being treated like an after thought which was evident as early as the Texans game.

  50. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    @Warren Brooks Lynch

Jason and Robinson could commit to him as a starter. That would change his mind.

  51. MadMax Says:

Draft G Ioane, draft TE Trigg, then LB Lawson….im sorry, its a wash year since todd is still DC, so lets get best avail at position of need and G and TE is DEF a position of need….we’ll grab a few D, sign a few, but D can be hit much harder in the draft after todd and his mess is gone….(we’ll be picking top 5 so theres our pass rush guy next year….then we build)

  52. MadMax Says:

If we want LB in the 2nd Josiah Trotter should be there….reminds me of Schwesinger quite a bit…..then get next best TE…..

  53. MadMax Says:

TE Jack Endries 3rd….and he can block

LB Harold Perkins jr 4th or a DT

  54. Aqualung Says:

Knowing how Todd Bowles craves versatility and the art of confusion, expect to see Bucky lined up at RT for a couple goal line packages. No opponent will expect it. More brilliance from our Genius.

  55. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“Jason and Robinson could commit to him as a starter. That would change his mind.”

That’s if his mind isn’t made up already. Don’t get me wrong, I like Rachaad more than most, but like you hinted at I think Robinson could play a role in potentially luring him back.

The interview from Loose Cannons’ they asked him “hypothetically” who he’d think would work in TB as OC, and the only name I can remember White even mentioning was Zac Robinson. I want to say this was about a week if not a few days before Robinson was hired.

  56. Rod Munch Says:

    Same thing every single year.

    No, it’s not a need.

  57. BigMacAttack Says:

Are there any good head coaches in the draft? It doesn’t matter who they draft Bowles will find a way to be 8-9, rallying from 4’th to 3’rd in the NFC South

  58. Bee Says:

Evans going to FA lol…its a wrap for this season!

  59. SteveK Says:

Better get ready to franchise tag Evans. Would hate to see him leave.

  60. donuts Says:

    Mike Evans returns. 🙂

  61. gotbbucs Says:

Doesn’t really matter who the running back is if three of the five starting offensive linemen each week are backups or backups to backups, and when most of the recieving weapons are standing on the sideline in street clothes.
The offense in general was screwed. Examining numbers and offensive rankings from last year’s offense is a pointless endeavor.
Quit counting on aging recievers that haven’t been healthy in three years and actually use more than one TE in the offensive game plan, then we can discuss what the offense needs beyond that.

  62. Simeon4HOF Says:

Little disappointed in M1K3 that he’d consider playing for another tam next year after being injured on ours for most all of last

  63. HC Grover Says:

STOP wit da DEFENSE…..It is hopless….ALL OFFENSE. Are Yall like unaware an listen to the Guru Kooks? Bowzo can not be helped.

  64. HC Grover Says:

Get rid of Evans and Godwin. Too Old.

  65. Simeon4HOF Says:

So M1K3 wanna go play for another team after being a hole in our Offense for most of 2025 huh

  66. Stpetematt Says:

I’ll tell you one thing we better know before the draft- the exact prognosis of Mauch and Bredeson and how rehabbing their injuries is going as well as an exact timeline for their return! If anything looks in the least bit questionable take Ioane.

  67. Andrew Says:

No we don’t. We have Bucky and Tucker. We are strong. Tucker plays well when given carries. Bucky was hurt our oline was hurt. All the attention needs to be on our defense specifically our front 7.

  68. Beeej Says:

White played in college with Jayden Daniels, and he’ll be a Redskin next year

No we don’t. We have Bucky and Tucker. We are strong. Tucker plays well when given carries.

    ———-

I keep saying this, but Tucker isn’t even going to get tendered. The Bucs would have to give him like a 2nd round offer, which isn’t happening. He might come back, but he’ll be a FA, and if he’s as good as the Tucker Truthers think, he’ll get big money somewhere else (hint: he won’t).

  70. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“I keep saying this, but Tucker isn’t even going to get tendered. The Bucs would have to give him like a 2nd round offer, which isn’t happening.“

Still with the Tucker slander, eh?

You’ve got your wires crossed, we don’t have to give anybody anything. Licht, can put a 1st or 2nd round tender designation ON Tucker as an RFA. Meaning any team that’d lure him away with a better deal than we are giving him, would have to fork either of those over.

If Licht were to do that and it means we get a 1st/2nd rd pick from the team taking a UDFA off our hands. I like Tucker, but if Licht did that and someone bit on it? So long, Sean.

That unnecessary bias is clouding your judgment young Munchwalker, do not be one with the farce.

  71. Bojim Says:

FA or later rds. But yes. We definitely need one.

  72. RASH Says:

what we need is a head coach with a brain period

  73. Rod Munch Says:

    ————

When you put a tender on a player, you also have to PAY them, it’s not a free tag – and a 2nd round tender is estimated to be just under $6M.

The Bucs are not paying Tucker that amount of money, thus, he’s going to be a FA. They can still resign him for cheaper, but he’s not getting almost $6M from anyone.

  74. Defense Rules Says:

Seems like there are as many potential ‘solutions’ to the Bucs’ problems as there are commenters on JBF. And rightfully so, this team is a mess right now. We’ve got some top-quality starters; we’ve got some mediocre starters; and we have marginal-to-non existent DEPTH in virtually every position group.

From what I can see (1) Job #1 is retaining any top-quality starters who are UFAs; (Job #2 is replacing our mediocre starters with higher quality talent; and (3) improving our DEPTH in virtually every position group through both free agency AND the draft.

In terms of the 2026 roster, I think this is what we might want to be looking at:

    o OFFENSE (25):
    – QB (3): Have 1 (Mayfield)…Need 2 (1 FA + 1 draft Rnds 5-7).
    – RB (3): Have 1 (Irving) … Need 2 (both FA-Tucker +1 like Algier)
    – WR (6): Have 4 (Godwin, McMillan, Egbuka, T Johnson) … Need 2 (both FA-Mike Evans + 1).
    – TE (4): Have 2 (Durham, Culp) … Need 2 (FA Otton + Draft Rnds 5-7).
    – OLine (9): Have 5 starters (Wirfs, Bredeson, Barton, Mauch, Goedeke) + 1 depth (Chukwuma) … Need 3 (2 FAs + 1 draft Rnds 5-7).

    o DEFENSE (25):
    – Safety (5): Have 2 starters (Winfield, T Smith) + 1 depth (JJ Roberts) … Need 2 more (both FAs – Izien +1).
    – CB (5): Have 3 starters (McCollum, Morrison, Parrish) … Need 2 more (2 FAs).
    – ILB (4): Have 1 Depth (SVD) … Need 3 more (1 FA + 2 draft Rnds 1-4).
    – OLB (5): Have 2 (Diaby, Nelson, Braswell, D Walker) … Need 1 more ( 1 Draft Rnds 1-4).
    – DLine (6): Have 3 (Vea, Kancey, E Roberts) … Need 3 more (2 FAs + 1 draft Rnds 1-4).

    o SPECIAL TEAMS (3):
    – Punter (1): Have 0 … Need 1 more (1 FA).
    – Kicker (1): Have 1 (McLaughlin).
    – Long snapper (1): Have 0 … Need 1 more (1 FA – Deckers OK).

Boils down to us needing a LOT of good signings in Free Agency (17 total) with as many as 6 from past season’s players who are FAs now (Mike Evans, Tucker, Otton, Izien, Deckers + 1 WR).

That’d leave a BUNCH of FAs (11) from other teams to be signed: 1 QB, 1 RB, 0 TEs, 2 OLine on offense, plus 1 Safety, 2 CBs, 1 ILB, 0 OLB, 2 DLine, plus 1 S/Ts (Punter).

And for the draft we should pick up 2 ILBs, 1 DT and 1 Edge in Rnds 1-4. Plus grab 1 TE, 1 OLineman & 1 QB in Rnds 5-7.

  75. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“When you put a tender on a player, you also have to PAY them, it’s not a free tag – and a 2nd round tender is estimated to be just under $6M.”

    From the NFL Operations site:

“A player with three accrued seasons and an expired contract. RFAs are free to negotiate and sign with any team, but their original team can offer them one of various qualifying offers (“tenders”) that come with the Right of First Refusal and/or draft-pick compensation. If the tender is withdrawn by a team, the RFA becomes an unrestricted free agent. Teams must submit these tenders before the start of the 2025 League Year (4 p.m. ET on March 12). These amounts change annually but the following numbers are for the 2025 season (players can choose either (a) or (b) regardless of which is greater in the applicable tenders below).”

The RFA tenders are classified as follows:

“First-round tender: One-year contract worth the greater of (a) $7.458 million or (b) 110 percent of the player’s prior-year base salary. If the player’s original team decides not to match an offer sheet signed with another team, it is entitled to a first-round draft pick from his new team. Unless received two days or later prior to the NFL Draft, draft compensation for each tender is due in the same League Year as the offer sheet is signed.

A signed offer sheet with a new team includes Principal Terms that must be matched by the prior club. However, if the new team includes a term(s) that waives or limits its ability to designate the RFA a franchise player in the future, the prior team will not have to match this term if it has tendered the player with an offer worth $500,000 more than the first-round tender ($7.458 million in 2025).

Second-round tender: One-year contract worth the greater of (a) $5.346 million or (b) 110 percent of the player’s prior-year base salary. Draft-choice compensation: second-round pick.”

“Right-of-first-refusal tender: One-year contract worth $3.263 million. Team has the right to match any offer sheet signed with another team, but there is no draft compensation tied to this tender.”

There’s an upgraded tender rule as well, but I’m not certain if Tucker even applies for it as a former UDFA. These are the 3 options Licht can choose to tag Tucker with as an RFA. So 1st/2nd accounts for what we’d pay him in-house, he can still shop around with other teams and if someone felt compelled enough to pay him more than the value of the tag we get the pick compensation.

Either way we’re going to have to spend money/pick, using either of the top tier tags on Tucker mean we tag him to keep him or tag him to get the draft comp, I highly doubt our front office in this case would just cut ties with him and let him walk without exhausting either of the 3 options that come with him being an RFA. .

  76. Rod Munch Says:

Right-of-first-refusal tender: One-year contract worth $3.263 million. Team has the right to match any offer sheet signed with another team, but there is no draft compensation tied to this tender.

    —————

That’s for last year, remember the cap went up again, so that number is estimated to be $3.54M for 2026.

I don’t know if the Bucs will even pay him that much, but it’s more likely than $6M.

We shall see what they do, but people are just assuming he’ll be back – I’m just saying I’m not so sure. I’d welcome him back as a #3 RB however, but you still need a legit #2 who can pass block and catch the ball, basically to replace White. That is not Tucker.

  77. Rick Says:

Jeremiah Love in the 1st? Nope not by a million miles long shot. Would rather get Emmett Johnson in the. Excellent speed, vision, and football acumen to be a threat to the house on every play. Also.provided that we traded back 6 spot with the Steelers. Of course only if someone they really need/ want there at 15.
