“They Showed Me Something”

January 16th, 2026

Sees glimmer of light with Todd Bowles, Baker Mayfield.

Noted sports provocateur Skip Bayless seems to feel many Bucs fans’ thoughts about a move many believe the Bucs should have made last week but did not.

Todd Bowles is still the Bucs’ coach.

Appearing on a recent edition of “The Arena: Gridiron,” Bayless listened to former Bucs cornerback Aqib Talib and former Eagles backup quarterback Cody Kessler make their cases that Bowles should have been retained.

Bayless also listened to former Bucs safety T.J. Ward argue Bowles should have been launched.

Bayless said he couldn’t argue with either position, in part, because he cannot be objective about the subject.

“You know, I’m having a hard time talking about this, because I still haven’t recovered from Tampa Bay’s collapse,” Bayless said. “I couldn’t, I couldn’t figure it out. I couldn’t understand it.

“They lost four straight going into the final game by 11 total points, and they’re losing to teams like Atlanta, New Orleans, Miami. Come on, that [Dolphins] game. Come on, man.

“Everything [Talib, Kessler and Ward] said is correct and right. And I’m probably not objective about this, because I’ve been around Todd Bowles, and I like the heck out of him, because he’s solid. He’s a rock.

“Is he that guy that can take you over the edge into a Super Bowl? I don’t know.”

Bayless also confessed, “I was actually slightly surprised [the Bucs] kept Todd, that he wasn’t gone.”

But Bayless said he saw a flickering light at the end of the Bucs’ dark tunnel. He liked how the Bucs weren’t total choking dogs; they rose up and beat Carolina to keep their playoff prayers alive.

For Bayless, that showed him players respected Bowles and themselves.

“The final game showed me something, they came out and played some football against Carolina,” Bayless said. “For what it was worth, it was ‘quote, unquote’ for all the marbles, except for what Atlanta did to the rams and reopened the door for Carolina.

“…It wasn’t the most beautiful game I’ve ever seen played, but they beat the Carolina Panthers when they had to, and I’m pretty sure that saved Todd Bowles job.”

What Bayless couldn’t figure out was why, down the stretch, the Bucs didn’t sit Baker Mayfield to allow him to heal and be more effective.

Bayless is confident Mayfield was much less than 100 percent.

“Obviously, I love me some Baker Mayfield,” Bayless began. “And you’re going to say I’m making excuses, but I think [Mayfield] got the hell kicked out of him this year.

“I think his left shoulder, it was bothering him. … I think it was bad. I think he might need some cleanup surgery, and I think he was struggling with it because he couldn’t follow through.”

This was a mystery to Joe. Like Bayless, Joe is confident Mayfield was beat up and that affected both his play and likely changed the Bucs’ offense to compensate for a quarterback who couldn’t throw well.

Joe asked Bucs coach Todd Bowles about that in his season wrap-up, and Bowles flatly said the Bucs didn’t change anything on offense to adjust for Mayfield’s injuries.

(If true, you could also suggest that was a mistake by the team.)

Yeah, yeah, Mayfield is the heart and soul of the team and he may have refused to sit. Joe loves Mayfield’s intangibles but someone should have been the adult in the room and told Mayfield to take a weekend off so he could help the team later.

And if the Bucs didn’t sit Mayfield because they were scared of Teddy Bridgewater, then why the hell was Bridgewater eating a roster spot?

Bowels also said his defense was almost there and that he figured out what was wrong with his scheme last off-season you can see how that worked out, either he is a liar or he doesn’t know what he is talking about, he sucks either way.

  2. Brandon Says:

Why wasn’t he sat? Because despite being hurt, he was still our best option by far. Was he hurting the team? Sure. But was he hurting the team more by not being out there and letting a backup play far worse? Definitely not.

  4. Fanofdabucs Says:

Bowles isnt a good leader. He should have told Baker, we are going to really need you the last 3 games and into the playoffs. He should have sat Baker for 2 weeks after the Bye to give him 3 weeks to get healthy. Look how Kyle Shanahan handled their QB situation and look where that has gotten them.

Bowles should have been fired weeks ago.

    He’s here….we are stuck…..live with it!!!

No one is deleting your posts unless you are using foul language or your IP address is raising a red flag with the gremlins who control the webpage’s software.

Of course, if you attack Joe, that’s another thing.

If you think Joe is protecting the Bucs, you don’t visit this site very often or never read the comments.

  9. Joe Says:

Am I the only one who is becoming bored with the Bowles retention articles and posts ?

Well, unless you can drum up something more relevant. It’s the offseason and the Bucs aren’t playing. And Joe wants to avoid mock drafts like the plague.

And as you can see in the comments, this is still a raw subject for Bucs fans.

If you are sick of Bowles chatter and Joe instead started typing about free agency, you’d want to pull your hair out weeks before free agency began.

And Joe isn’t and never will be the kind of guy who ignores subjects fans want to read about. As always, as long as someone is talking Bucs, Joe is writing about it.

Joe built this site to serve Bucs fans with what they want. That’s not changing.

Glazers please keep the doors locked while MM is being interviewed (hired)

Will Todd be OK being paid half of what his new OCs salary is?

Really I wish this would happen but not expected

  11. DoooshLaRue Says:

Bowles is still here because of one reason.
He was not replaced by Liam for the same reason.
The fallout would have been too much for the Glazers and their PC
    values.

Case in point; Ryan Clark”s statement about Mike Tomlin’s DECISION to step down.
I mean the man made his own decision about resigning and it still got spun the way it always does with certain people.

    Sad times.

  12. Joe Says:

The fallout would have been too much for the Glazers and their PC

LOL Glazers don’t give two s(p)its about public perception. LOL They quite likely are the most anti-PR ownership group in the league.

  13. BucsFan81 Says:

Win or lose we are stuck with Bowles and I don’t think it is for just this year. I think we could be stuck with him for awhile. They don’t want the PR nightmare and they don’t want to eat that contract extension. If they did it would have already happened. I don’t want to hear about the injuries because every team was injured this year. Good coaches make adjustments and still put the team in position to make the playoffs just look at the 49ers for example.

  14. Tye Says:

    Something fundamental creepy about them

  17. Kenton Smith Says:

Just back from our annual Phoenix Golf outing. Brother in Denver and our childhood buddies from Chicago and me the Okie. Man it hurt hearing about Broncos and Bears. Our Bucs should be there. I’m hoping the Bills can beat the snot out of the Broncos and the Rams dismember the Bears. Listening to those guys drone on about their teams almost ruined my trip. I say almost. I took out my angst on that little white ball. It was liberating. If our team can reach that Zen level next season we’ll have us another Super Bowl. I agree with Bayless. That final win against Carolina was ugly. But it told me something I needed to know going into this offseason. Defense played well enough for us to win after the bye. We had drops, penalties, turnovers, and a revolving door on our OLine. Receivers finally got healthy but needed a little more time to jell. OC Grizzard had to be a fall guy, I guess. But our defense will get some DLine and linebacker help this offseason. And I bet our special teams will look different. And with our 2024 Oline healthy and gotta resign Mike then that oughta do it. Alot to look forward to this year. I believe we may just be the best team in the league. Seriously.

  18. Pewter Power Says:

Not everyone is playing for respect (RASHAAD WHITE) they are professionals, why would these starters who’ve been to the playoffs and have won a Super Bowl not want to go back to the playoffs. They played for that, why do they all have to be playing and thinking I gotta save my coaches job geez

  19. Jmarkbuc Says:

The Glazers have hired three black coaches and fired two, and barring a miracle will eventually fire a third.

Completely ridiculous to play the “woke” card.. again. That ish is old hat. Even more so when you consider that BA, the old white guy, is how Bowles got the gig and how he’s keeping right now.

    RWNJ’s can’t think for themselves.

  20. Baking with the next one Says:

  22. Fred McNeil Says:

Like @Dooshlaroo said. If the BUCS really didn’t care about PC then they wouldn’t have had the knee-jeek response of taking Gruden out of the ring of honor. But I understand the Joes don’t want to lose their press credentials.

Probably not. And that will give the Glazers the opportunity to say “so what are you going to do about it?”

  24. Fred McNeil Says:

Just had a thought. The Glazers themselves have to be super careful what they say and do least they find themselves arrested when they visit England to see Manchester United. PC is mandatory there.

  25. Bucs Guy Says:

The win over Carolina cost the Bucs by keeping Bowles and moving them down far enough they probably don’t have a chance at one of the top 4 DE/Edge rushers as they are now behind Dallas and Baltimore. Other likely to pick an Edge are Wash, NO and Cincy

  26. MadMax Says:

yawn…..they showed me something alright! Wanting a top 5 pick in the 27 draft…all good tho, i’ll play along

  27. Crickett Baker Says:

I am so sick of certain people putting the Glazers down. Gruden called Mr. Glazer a bad word for kitten in those emails and it was a personal knee-jerk reaction to take him out of the ROH. Glazer even later accepted his apology and did not hold a grudge.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, they lost a significant amount of money—no ticket, food, or parking revenue. Yet when the hurricane danger came, they spared no expense moving players and their wives to safety, and even their girlfriends and pets, for gosh sakes. (We beat the Saints that week).
They set up a National Coaching Foundation with no thought of profit. They set up She is Football. They have a Vision non-profit, and I know I am missing some of their philanthropy. Most importantly, they pay the players and are so unlike Culverhouse, I don’t understand why some denigrate these terrific owners.

  28. Jehzsa Says:

“If you think Joe is protecting the Bucs, you don’t visit this site very often or never read the comments.”

Nor watched Bucs’ games. Like analysts/predictors/commentators like Bayless who “thinks” water over a bridge would have been better than a field in May. But don’t blame them for confusing hockey and football games. To them those are basically indistinguishable.

  29. Warren Brooks Lynch Says:

“What Bayless couldn’t figure out was why, down the stretch, the Bucs didn’t sit quarterback Baker Mayfield to allow him to heal up and be more effective down the stretch.“

Because he was hurt, and not injured. Longest running excuse to explain his bad play down the stretch going in this fan base is the phantom injury that nobody can pinpoint, nor have I heard nothing of Mayfield going in for any medical procedures whether it be elective or necessary.

What I have seen is a brand new ad featuring Baker done for a men’s deodorant brand. Cause, when it’s crunch-time and the heat is on, you want to “pick” the right protection 😂

  30. ocala Says:

I enjoy the site Joe, but I do think you have been somewhat soft in your analysis of Coach Bowles. It is very obvious that he is one of if not the worst head coach in the NFL.

  31. Buc Up Buttercup Says:

Pure guess here, but Mayfields injury probably required surgery that would have ended his season or kept him out for a significant amount of time. They opted to have him keep playing through it since it still gave them the best chance to win.

  32. Bee Says:

They showed me something too, a 5-12 season loading the moment Bowles was retained. You can sum up the upcoming season in one word…insanity. Doing the same thing expecting different results.

But then again I don’t think the ownership thinks much of this team or the HC options available that what to coach the Bucs. So we’re stuck with a tank year since Bowles only gets worse with time.

  33. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Still bored with Bowles …bring on the Blank & the Bucs articles….nit too early for mock drafts or FA chatter…..

  34. Steven007 Says:

SB, using your logic every Lombardi is a rental. And if it’s that easy to rent one, how, doesn’t or so teams have still never “rented” one? That’s right.

  36. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Hard to believe that Joe Robbie built the Dolphins stadium on his own dime!

He needs at least 3 replacements so??

  45. HC Grover Says:

Bowzo is a CDH hire by the VNJD Glazerhouse team. Just add a letter.

  46. Allen Lofton Says:

We watched the last couple of years of Baker Mayfield playing hurt. End result was Mayfield bearly beatsCarolina in 2022. He could bearly throw the ball and the Bucs only won because of the heroics of Winfield’s last second breakup. Mayfield play was admirable but piss poor.

After the bye week, this season Mayfield was playing hurt again. His play doomed the Bucs. That’s on Bowles. Piss poor leadership! In two separate seasons with Mayfield definitely hurt Bowles played him. Both those decisions sent the Bucs home early.

I personally don’t see Bowles changing unless the Glazers intervine. Someone needs to act like an adult and it’s not going to be Todd Bowles. This is the Glazers team and any decision by them are final. And if the Bucs get to the playoffs in 2026 they need one of the favorites to win. This is a make or break year for the Bucs and Todd Bowles.

  54. AlstottNumber1 Says:

The same guy that drafted Jameis Winston is the same guy that signed Bilgewater to backup Baker. Same guy that drafted Trask in the second round.

That guy cannot draft the QB position to save his life.

Same guy that decided to give Bowles a contract extension.

That guy is Jason Licht. Fire Licht now!

  55. Colonel Angus Says:

He was hurt going into the BYE week. Instead of a week off, should have prepped Teddy B to play some of those AFC opponents after the break and give Baker a month to heal. We knew the important games were the NFC and division games. Maybe it would have helped win 1 or 2 more. Doesn’t matter now.

Setting aside the larger question of who was how responsible for what, I really hate the whole “he refused to sit” thing. A player can refuse to play (remember Scottie Pippen?), but he can’t “refuse” to sit. The whole idea is absurd. If the HC decides a player needs to sit his a** down, the player is going to sit his a** down. Period.

the whole thing has been very weird from towards the end of the season…

the weirdness started with bowles doing pressers without any bucs gear on…a few times at the end…

as the world turns…at one buc…

and now my knicks are in a free falling collapse as well…

i guess this is the new thing in sports…you go from top to flop overnight

  60. Bosch Says:

I don’t think PC (political correctness) had anything to do with the Glazers revoking Gruden RofH status. I think it was pure simple retaliation for Gruden’s insulting and disrespectful comments in his email exchange with Bruce Allen.

Joe’ comments about them not caring about their public perception is interesting. It certainly looks that way when they retained Bowles and they had to know it would draw the ire of the fans. BUT, they definitely care about revenue and poor public perception is not good for revenue.

Perhaps it is more like they insulate themselves from public perception because it I too painful to agonize over it. “You can’t please all the people all the time, so why try?” And there is likely some arrogance mixed in. “ We own this team and will do as we damn well please.”

But the one thing we can all agree upon is that they are not very likable owners,

  61. FormerBucFan Says:

Our daily dose of jbf pro Bowles dribble. Hitching your wagon to the wrong horse is never good. Woke joke

  62. Curse of Gruden Says:

I’ll say this about Baker, if he was hurt during the latter half of the season, for the most part, he didn’t act like he was in much pain, like wincing after every throw or when a d-lineman breathed on him. Maybe he’s a tough SOB, and the Bucs need just that.

  63. Jon Says:

  66. Newbie Says:

Bayless – are you just tuning in? They have showed us something – especially the defense (I wont even bring up the special teams).

Just remember, this is the defense that made the statue (Kirk Cousin) look incredible against us not once… not twice… but that last 3 times we played against ATL. In those three games how many times did we blitz the statue? Seriously? Hardly at all. Yet everyone else we send so many guys.

How many explosives did our opponent have against this defense?

How many sacks were actually generated by bringing 4 or even 5?

Soft coverage. Pass rushers often dropping into coverage. WRs/RBs/TEs – running wide a$$ open.

    3rd and 28 (ATL).

Rarely getting off the field. Hell, even against the Commanders last season in playoffs, WAS didn’t punt once. Kancey still can’t find his jock strap.

Kupp and Rams vs Bucs a few years ago in playoffs.

My point is this – this defense has “showed me something” that after the last four years they have progressively gotten worse by the year.

Even worse, this team quit on TB, JL and on each other. Stevie Wonder could see that. It’s pathetic that Glazers did not make a move. They enable this regime to continue make others scapegoats while not holding the head coach and GM accountable.

  67. Usedtocould Says:

  68. Larrd Says:

  69. Mike Johnson Says:

Say Skip, we fans have not recovered from Our Buc Collapses either. 3rd and 28.

  70. 76doug Says:

Joe, don’t blame you for not wanting to do mock drafts.

Can’t keep all your readers 100% happy but keep up the good work!

  71. BUCDADDY Says:

Got the Broncos and Pats winning in the AFC this weekend. I believe that the Denver defense will be too much for Allen to overcome.

And for me in the NFC, I’ve got the Seahawks, and after going back and forth, Da Bears. There’s just something that looks inconsistent and off in the way the Rams have been playing. They struggled against Carolina, a team that we as Bucs fans know, is not a good team.

Then I gotta go Pats and Seahawks in the Super Bowl.

  72. BUCDADDY Says:

Also, Skip seemed to be one of the few defending Brady here in Tampa. And guess what? He was right. Skip was made to look like the douche by other media outlets when him and Shannon would get into heated debates about this. And the truth is, Unc always had this hatred towards Brady, and rarely would compliment the man. I mean, we’re talking Tom freakin’ Brady. The GOAT! Shannon was just a hater, and I never cared about the stuff that Skip said to him. I never could take Shannon seriously again after showing how clearly biased he was towards Tom.

  73. Bucs 95 Says:

  75. SenileSenior Says:

I do not have any reason to dislike the Glazers on a personal basis. I suspect each of them would do some things differently from the other were they the sole owners. They certainly have divided up different roles in joint ownership.

I am happy with the ownership. Maybe, I am just easy to please.

I probably would have fired Bowles if I owned the team. I do not personally dislike Toddd but I would hold him to a higher standard.

    Go Bucs!

  76. SOFIERCE Says:

Stop the fluff talk. 5-11 next year.

  77. BUCDADDY Says:

Wow, didn’t even really think about that, to be honest. Clearly, the Rams and Bills are probably favored, so I dont know about going out on a limb, bud. Home field advantage helps, but it’s not always the x-factor you think it is. Also, I’ve said it before. Numbers don’t completely paint the picture of a defense. I think New England also has an amazing defense. You should watch them sometime.

  78. BUCDADDY Says:

Also, Maye, in my opinion, clearly deserves MVP. But the NFL has already created the narrative to brainwash everyone. I assure you, even though Maye appears to be the more well rounded QB, Stafford will somehow win MVP.

  79. Rod Munch Says:

LOL! The never ending ‘Baker is hurt’ excuse.

I mean his entire career, it’s getting hurt, it’s not just that he’s a completely inconsistent QB, but no, he’s hurt. But if he gets hurt for half the season every year, at what point do you say he’s injured plagued and not put the future of the team in his hands?

  80. Kenton Smith Says:

Middling Munch. Pretty sure Baker didn’t use injuries as an excuse. At this point in his career calling him injury plagued shows what an airhead you can be Rod. He’s as durable a QB in the league the past 8 years. But the part where you talk about the future of the team in his hands? That, for a QB, comes down to winning. And if we’re not winning that’s the point he won’t have the future of the team in his hands.

Danny Smith from the Steelers interviewed with the Bucs for “Special” Teams position. Hire him NOW! Bowles is commander of the Bucs life raft but can’t row it, he needs to bring on the entire Steelers defensive staff and they might save him from drowning.

Baker got banged up good before the bye but was good enough physically to play. But mentally he was affected the rest of the season. The o line gave him no clean pocket and he got happy feet looking to avoid further hits. The line sucked in pass pro from my vantage point (even our good tackles let the pocket collapse too early and don’t get me started with the guards and a regressed Barton). Add in the meh play calling and play design and the offense did no favors for the defense that needed all the help it could get. That’s how I saw the season besides Bowles being the source of the low energy defense and a special team coverage unit that didn’t want to tackle. Defenders everywhere didn’t have confidence in what they were asked to do. Ronde’s assessment of the defense being too complicated is most credible.

  85. JackBall Says:

Is Bowles going to hire a DC. He sucks as the DC.

So he’s physically and mentally fragile?

How does saying he’s a mental lightweight help your cause?

  87. Ringer Says:

Munch, “Cause?” No cause here dude. Im not waving any Baker Pom poms here. Just stating that he often had no time to throw and was probably justifiably untrusting of the protection when perhaps he may have had the time. Improvement is needed from him as well as the O line and scheming for easier success.

I’m just tired of the Bowles coach speak BS while stating he figured this out or that out…When he’s just mouth talking the media & lying to fans…The ones he has palpable discontent for.

Just because none of us are coaching in the NFL doesn’t mean we don’t know what a good NFL HC coach looks like…on & off the field.

I may not be a mechanic, but I know what bald tires look like & what needs to be done when it’s time to change them out…Some things are just obvious to anyone with common sense.

What’s common sense to vast majority if Bucs fans is that Bowles isn’t the right guy to take the team to another SB win. He’s mid at best.

He was an easy bridge coach for the organization to go to when Arians stepped down. But that sure a heck doesn’t mean he’s the right guy to keep leading the team after 4 years and 2 losing records. Even of he did manage to win the weakest division in football which had 3 rebuilding teams.

He will forever be known for taking over a 13-4 team BA coach Bucs led by Tom “Frickin” Brady & immediately turning that team into the only losing season of Tom’s HOF career. Losing to a 2-5 CAR team…a 3-7 CLE team…& then a 6-10 ATL team to close out the season…All of which were inexcusable. Even if he did back his way into a Division Crown at 8-9…before getting thumped by DAL 31-14 at home in the playoffs. Finishing the season 8-10 with that team should have been the closure of his Bucs coaching career.

Even with the revolving door of OFF coordinators during his tenure, the biggest crutch his Bucs teams have had are his lackluster DEF’s. Who have consistently found ways to lose winnable games to other underachieving teams & 2nd rate BU / rookie QB’s on a consistent basis. Year over Year. Unfortunately, that has been the most consistent part of his tenure.

When your supposed to be the DEF wizard & havoc scheme creator…That’s a huge black mark against your coaching capabilities.

Well, interesting. Plenty of foul language on here especially during the regular season. Doesn’t get deleted. So, how is my IP address tripping the ‘monitor’ red flag? I’ve had it for over 3 decades. Hope this posts.
